How Can I Help? The heavy rains and flooding in the greater Houston area and surrounding towns have been relentless. As followers of Christ, we are called to be the light of Christ in a dark world. If you feel called to help and want ideas, please consider the following opportunities:

St. Peter’s UMC  

Provide financial donations to St. Peter’s UMC with “Spring Storms Recovery” in the memo line. Donations will help the Missions teams muck & gut, install insulation and sheetrock, and paint. It costs anywhere from $1500 - $3,000 per home to perform this work. If you would like to sign up for current relief efforts or keep in the loop as to ongoing activities, click on "I would like to help in recovery work" on the Disaster Recovery Page of the St. Peter’s UMC website.

Other Ways to Assist – new items highlighted in yellow Donation of Items There are a number of agencies accepting donations of physical goods. Please do not bring physical goods to the disaster scene, and do not attempt to donate goods not requested by the agencies accepting physical goods. Doing so will reduce their capacity to serve and will not help the survivors of disaster. There is currently NOT a need for clothing, but there IS a need for cleaning supplies. The houses out there will have been sitting in water for 2 weeks before residents were allowed back inside. Agency All Hands

Bleach - a few Thousand Gallons (They have a lot but from what the Country Environmental Services told us, we each need at least 1 gallon per 100 feet of water well to disinfect our wells. Some wells are well over 300 feet X a couple of hundred wells = Thousands of gallons - and that's not including home clean up. o Rubber boots and gloves o 5 gallon Buckets with lids (multiple buckets will be needed by all for the cleanup. Since there are no easy to obtain water sources near the homes while they are without power, residents will most likely need the buckets and lids to transport water for cleaning from outside the city. o Squeegees w/ long handles - the fastest way to move water and mud. o Mop handles - there are Red Cross cleanup buckets that have mop heads but I did not see handles (I will verify) o Contractor Trash Bags - the Red Cross cleanup buckets have trash bags, but thousands of large contractor trash bags will be needed. o Duct Tape - it can be used for many different things, such as being wrapped around Freezer doors to prevent them from opening while they are being moved o Deck Brushes with long handles o Styrofoam Ice Chests for storing Cold Water. Financial Donations But most pressing are financial donations. There are families who did not have Flood Insurance that lost everything. There are also many families that are paying for extended hotel stays and short term housing while still paying mortgages. While their insurance will pay to repair their homes, none of these families will receive help for living expenses. It will soon become a financial nightmare for these families. Please consider giving even a few dollars. Agency

Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management Fort Bend County, TX – As rainfall chances diminish through the week and the drying trend continues over Fort Bend County, local and state resources are mounting a countywide recovery effort marking the beginning of the long term disaster recovery process. State and county representatives are currently conducting a countywide environmental hazard assessment focusing on immediate issues related to distressed or deceased animals as conditions allow. Fort Bend County (FBC) disaster recovery officials are asking residents to notify the FBC Emergency Operations Center (EOC) upon discovery of any distressed or deceased animal by calling the FBC EOC at 281-238-3438. Please be

7

prepared to provide specific location details and your contact information to help facilitate each request. Residents are urged not to try and move any deceased animals to any public right-of-way and shall be reassured that recovery personnel will provide a timely response. As flood waters recede and residents begin to re-enter their properties, debris removal will become the initial first step in the recovery process. Residential and commercial debris removal shall be separated according to refuse classifications comprised of normal household waste, vegetative, construction/demolition, appliances, electronics, and hazardous waste debris. Separated debris piles should not block the roadway and be placed as close to the curb as possible. Additional debris removal guidelines will be posted to the FBC Office of Emergency Management website within the next few days. For the most accurate and up to date information, please visit fbcoem.org website or call 281-342-6185.

Dare to be generous!
