HP Moonshot—redefining what’s possible Drastically improved infrastructure economics Rather than continue to spend precious budget dollars on energy for power and cooling, you can use HP Moonshot System and save. In fact, when HP migrated its own webpages and objects from legacy servers to HP Moonshot, we cut energy consumption by a whopping 89 percent.1

HP Moonshot is a precision-engineered system designed to truly match the workload its running—delivered in a compact, power- and energy-efficient package. A new model for compute is needed The interrelated trends we know as cloud, mobility, Big Data, and security are driving explosive growth that will be restricted by the very thing that enables it—infrastructure. By 2020, we expect there to be 30 billion devices, 40 trillion gigabytes of data, and 10 million mobile apps for 8 billion people. The sheer size of these numbers makes it clear that there is a need for change. Today’s IT infrastructure is not sustainable in terms of space, energy, and cost. HP has the answer, with the HP Moonshot System.

HP Moonshot is changing the game “In a data center planned for 5,000 servers we can now host about 30,000 servers on HP Moonshot. So we can generate a lot more revenue with our existing data center.”2 – Christoph Herrnkind, Chief Operating Officer, myLoc managed IT AG

HP Moonshot System is unlike anything that exists today. It’s a huge leap forward in infrastructure design that delivers breakthrough efficiency and scale by aligning just the right amount of compute, memory, and storage to get the work done. The idea is very simple—replace general purpose processors with more energy-efficient SoCs (Systems-on-Chip) containing integrated accelerators tailored for specific workloads. But we didn’t stop there, we converged the infrastructure. The Moonshot Chassis incorporates everything that is a common resource in a traditional server—power, cooling, management, fabric, switches, and network uplinks are all shared across 45 hot-pluggable server cartridges in a dense form factor. This enables massive scale-out without a corresponding increase in complexity and management overhead. A complete HP Moonshot System is comprised of: • HP Moonshot Server Cartridges—Workload optimized servers, able to handle a wide variety of workloads to deliver enhanced performance and improved economics • HP Moonshot Chassis—Incorporates independent component design and hosts 45 cartridges, two network switches, and the infrastructure components within a 4.3U chassis • HP Moonshot Uplinks and Switches—Delivers flexible, low-latency uplink connectivity and bandwidth

Why HP Moonshot? HP Moonshot is an integrated server system that gives you the right compute for your workloads at the right economics so you can get the most out of your infrastructure. With HP Moonshot, you can: • Optimize application performance—Avoid paying for IT you are not fully utilizing by using the best solution for your workload ased on HP internal analysis and estimates, B as compared to traditional servers 2 h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/GetDocument.aspx? docname=4AA5-3549ENW&cc=us&lc=en 1

• Realize breakthrough economics—Make better use of your data center space and power while reducing complexity • Accelerate business innovation—Respond quicker to business needs and stay on the leading edge of technology 3

“This is the first time I’ve seen anybody really rethink hardware fundamentally in years. Moonshot is the first time people sat down and said, how can we do it differently than we’ve done it before? How can we make it smaller, faster, cheaper, and more efficient with better power utilization?” – S. Ryan Quick, Principal Architect, Advanced Technology Group, PayPal

Web caching on 64-bit ARM ® Powered by HP ProLiant m400 Server Cartridge For memory-intensive applications, memory cannot always be sized independently of processing cost. As a result, you often trade-off too little memory in a server that’s priced just right for a costlier server with just the right memory but with far more compute power than you really need. Now you have a choice with the world’s first enterprise-class 64-bit ARM server, enabling dramatic performance gains in memory bandwidth and overall server productivity, while reducing power costs relative to overbuying compute. Powered by the AppliedMicro X-Gene 1 processor, the ProLiant m400 provides high performance at dramatically lower TCO than traditional rack-mount servers to increase energy efficiency and greatly expand memory capacity.

HP Moonshot Networking Modules Depending on which server cartridges you choose, your HP Moonshot 1500 Chassis will be outfitted with a designated switch module, paired with an uplink module to communicate to the external network. By disaggregating the uplinks from the internal switch, HP Moonshot gives you greater flexibility for deploying your choice of external interconnects and future-proofing your investment. The Moonshot System can support up to two switch and uplink module pairs, which can be independently configured for redundancy or traffic isolation. Multiple modules can be stacked within or across multiple chassis, reducing the cost of top-of-rack (TOR) switches and providing failover in the event of a switch or uplink failure.
