IDEA San Benito College Preparatory AP for All Philosophy College Board Advanced Placement Courses gives college level studies to high school students who are ready to do college level work. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are taught using college level materials and strategies that will prepare students to take College Board Advanced Placement Examinations. It is our belief that all IDEA San Benito College Preparatory students are all college bound and should be challenged during their four years of high school. The challenge of AP coursework in high school will help educate and prepare students to be successful in college. Taking AP courses at IDEA San Benito is a mutual decision made by students, parents, and IDEA San Benito. All involved are important participants in this effort and while the students bear the ultimate responsibility to achieve success, both the school and the parent play an important part in a student’s success. The responsibilities of each stakeholder include the following IDEA San Benito will provide: ∗ Professional development opportunities for every AP teacher ∗ Exceptional instruction at college level and pace ∗ As many AP course opportunities as possible to challenge our students Parents must: ∗ Become familiar with each AP course requirements ∗ Monitor student progress ∗ Help students organize their study and preparation time for each AP class ∗ Encourage their students to excel when the course work becomes challenging ∗ Contact the teacher first with any concerns Students must: ∗ Become familiar with each AP course requirements ∗ Understand the rigorous nature of AP coursework and commit themselves to work at the level required to be successful ∗ Organize their time and effort to successfully complete each course ∗ Have outstanding attendance in class ∗ Come prepared academically for each AP exam and make the choice to excel accordingly How does Advanced Placement benefit students? ∗ Since these are college level classes, a student’s opportunity to be accepted by the college of their choice improves ∗ AP students who pass the College Board Advanced Placement examinations are often exempt from introductory courses in college Who is eligible to take AP courses? Since IDEA San Benito’s philosophy is open enrollment for AP, all students are enrolled in AP courses. All students are expected to complete the course and take the examination in May.
