What Is Our Purpose?

Our purpose is to help guide children in creating crafts and/or doing experiments in order to enforce the daily Bible Point.

Roles and Responsibilities:

On VBS Days we expect to see you at 8:30 a.m. in room 141 for our devotion, a review of the day’s project, and to set up for the day.

Daily Schedule:

We will be located in rooms 141/142, 171, 185, & 186 for elementary and 161 & 172 for breakout. Room 160 will be our storage room. You will be expected to check in at a Kiosk every morning. (Examples: In Children’s Lobby, Rm 180 (Jr. High), and Rm 210 (YAC)) Imagination station elementary volunteers will see 3 elementary groups rotate through our area each day. Imagination station breakout volunteers will see 2 breakout groups rotate through our area each day. Everyone will have the same groups each day. Your group will meet on the same round table cloth each day. You will hold up their crew # and welcome them as they enter the room. The area leader/teacher will lead the large group presentation. You will have a bin with supplies to lead them through the day’s projects. We will follow the same schedule each day. You will be responsible for making sure you have all of the supplies for your groups and for running the group after we are done with the large group presentation. The crew leader and assistant will be there to help, but you are expected to lead them. You will have one mid-day break each day. During your break you are invited to head to the café for a snack. Please, make sure you report back to your imagination station room to set up for the next groups at the expected time. Act responsibly! Breakout volunteers will have 1 less group to lead each day, but you will have additional set up responsibilities, materials organization, and experiment preparation to do during that extra break time. If no additional material preparation is needed, breakout volunteers are welcome to find an elementary group to help guide through the experiment that day.

Expectations:

This year we are again using Realm communication. You should have been informed of our Imagination Station work days (room 171). You are expected to attend at least one to help us get organized and prepared for VBS. Wednesday, June 12th from 6:30-8:00 pm in Room 171 Wednesday, June 19th from 6:30-8:00 pm in Room 171

Medical/Emergency Procedures:

Amanda Vance will be wearing the headset for the imagination station area emergency communications. Please listen to your room’s lead teacher for all emergency communications. Let your lead teacher know of any medical emergencies and they will communicate to Amanda Vance who will, in turn, call for medical help.

Set-Up Day (June 23) Responsibilities:

Plan to help set up the day before VBS on Sunday, June 23th from 12:30-2:30 pm. We have 6 rooms to decorate. Lunch will be provided! (Rm 141-142)

Clean-Up Responsibilities:

Please plan to help clean up at the end of VBS (Friday, June 28th).

Tips/Other Information:

Our theme this year is Roar, Life is Wild. Wear your VBS t-shirt and it is optional to wear something in a Safari theme. (No need to buy anything!)

Day One: When life is unfair… God is good! Imagination Tool: Toilet Plunger Safari Voting Question and Facts about Rhinos Upfront Demo: BOP Bag Group Project: Domino Knock Down Once the lead teacher is done with the transition from the upfront demo, turn to your groups. On the supplied hard surfaces, encourage the kids to set up the dominos and knock them down in rows, circles, etc. Gizmo: Tumble Drums Once the lead teacher turns the crews back to you, arrange the hard surfaces in a line. Let the kids test out the tumble drums. Encourage them to see if they can get them to flip down the entire surface. Also see if they can get the drums to stand back up on their ends. At the end of the session, place each drum in the supplied baggie for the kids to take home. Please have a crew leader write the children’s names on the baggie with a sharpie today and throughout the entire week!

Day Two: When life is scary… God is good! Imagination Tool: Bubble Blower Safari Voting Question and Facts about Hoopoe Birds Upfront Demo: Upfront Catapult Group Project (Elementary): Testing a Catapult You will pull out pre-made catapults and have the kids test the catapults. Marshmallows will be what the catapults fire. There will be cotton balls available in case kids are allergic to marshmallows. Please do not let the kids eat the marshmallows. Encourage the kids to talk about fears that God can cast away from them. There will be Dixie cups to setup and stack in a pyramid to act as a target. Group Project (Breakout): Making a Catapult You will pull out the catapult materials and have the kids make the catapults. Marshmallows will be what the catapults fire. There will be cotton balls available in case kids are allergic to marshmallows. Please do not let the kids eat the marshmallows. Encourage the kids to talk about fears that God can cast away from them! There will be Dixie cups to setup and stack in a pyramid to act as a target. See the instruction below for directions. Have the kids write their name on the catapult with a sharpie. Making A Catapult Materials ● Wide Craft Sticks – 6 ● 1 wooden spoon ● Rubber bands - 3 small, 1 med. ● Marshmallows ● Some mini cups to shoot at Directions 1. Stack 5 craft sticks on top of each other and bind them on each end with a rubber band. This would act as the base and fulcrum – the point at which the lever will pivot. 2. Stack the remaining 1 stick and wooden spoon and bind them with a single rubber band on the very edge of one end. 3. Pry open the stick and spoon to make a “V” shape. Place the bundle of 5 sticks at the very bottom of the “V” shape and secure it with the final medium sized rubber band.

Gizmo: Boinks Hand out the Boinks to each child in your group. Show the kids how to safely shoot the boinks. Let them experiment with the gizmos. At the end of the session, for ELEMENTARY, place the boinks in the supplied baggie with name on the bag to take home. For BREAKOUT, place the catapult and the boink in the supplied baggie with name on the bag for transport home.

Day Three: When life changes… God is good! Imagination Tool: Silly String Safari Voting Question and Facts about Buffalos Upfront Demo: Hex Nut Challenge Gizmo (Elementary): Compass Wristband The kids will decorate their very own compass wristband. Set out hard surfaces. Distribute fabric markers. Have the kids design their wristbands. When finished, place the wristbands in the supplied baggies with the child’s name on the bag. Gizmo (Breakout): Compass Wristband The kids will tie their own paracord compass wristband. Hand out the pre-started wristbands. Please follow the directions on the screen and on the handout. First step will be to set the wristband length. After everyone has the proper length tied, cut, and taped, move on to tying the “Cobra knot”. Continue knotting the wristband. Be sure to slide the cords through the compass. At the end of the wristband, tie the cords and cut off the extra lengths. When finished, place the wristbands in the supplied baggies with the child’s name on the bag. See the handout for more specific direction and practice instructions. Group Project: Dancing Magnet Experiment If there is time or some of the kids finish early, bring out the Dancing Magnet Experiment. The lead teacher most likely will not direct the entire group to do this! Place 3 magnets on the outside of the base of the triangles. Play with the magnets and see how they affect the hanging magnet. Watch how the hanging circle magnet will move around in the magnetic field. The children can also see how their compasses will be affected by the magnets.

Day Four: When life is sad… God is good! Imagination Tool: Water Mister Safari Voting Question and Facts about Lions Upfront Demo: Salvation Demonstration Group Project: Arrow Changing and Coin Disappearing For the arrow changing experiment: The kids will all gather around a cup half full of water. You will have a paper with arrows facing 2 different directions. Have each child look through the cup with the paper behind the cup, one arrow below the water level, one arrow above the water level. Move the paper further and closer until the arrows seem to point in the same direction. For the coin disappearing experiment: You will have an empty cup. Set the cup on the penny. Put the paper (with arrows) on top of the cup. Ask – can you see the penny looking through the side of the cups? (Yes!) Then move the cup with the water in it over the penny, and put the paper on top. Now ask, can you now see the penny? (Should be a no!) This show the principle of refraction and how light waves bend through the water. This also shows how refraction changes the way we see things! Gizmo (Elementary): Optichrome Give a child (or pair) a hard surface to spin the optichrome on. Show the kids how to assemble the optichrome. The paper gets placed on top of the plastic disc. The axel gets placed through the paper and disc. It then can be spun on the surface. Watch for the color lines to appear. There will be markers available for decorating the back of the optichrome paper if there is time. After finishing, the optichrome gets placed in a baggie with their name on the baggie. Gizmo (Breakout): Optichrome Give a child or two a hard surface to spin the optichrome on. Show the kids how to assemble the optichrome. The paper gets placed on top of the plastic disc. The axel gets placed through the paper and disc. It then can be spun on the surface. Watch for the colored lines to appear. Breakout will have the option to add 3 wiki sticks on the bottom of the plastic disc for more color changing fun. There will be markers available for decorating the back of the optichrome paper if there is time. After finishing, the optichrome gets placed in a baggie with their name on the baggie.

Day Five: When life is good… God is good! (Just Elementary) Imagination Tool: Confetti Safari Voting Question and Facts about Giraffes Gizmo: Paper Bead Wristband Distribute the hard surfaces and cover them with newspaper. Try to keep the glue on the newspaper. Each child will get 5 paper triangles (various colors), a straw, and a glue stick. Demonstrate to the group how to roll a paper bead. Glue one side of the entire triangle. Start with the base of the triangle and roll the paper up around the straw. Make sure you glue the very end of the triangle down on the bead. Slide the bead off the straw. Repeat for the other 4 beads. Once all 5 beads are rolled, string the bead on the piece of elastic string. Tie the elastic string on each child’s wrist. Place the bead bracelet in a baggie labeled with the child’s name. Encourage the children to connect a bead to something of God’s goodness that they have learned about this week, something that they are thankful for, or a God sighting in their lives! Group Project: Sharing God’s Goodness Experiment You will be guiding the children through Sharing God’s Goodness Experiment. 1. Pour a few drops of the dish-washing liquid into a small bowl and soak the ends of toothpicks in it. Set aside. 2. Pour enough milk into the foil pie pan so the bottom of the plate is covered and there is a thin layer of milk. About 1 – 1.5 cups. 3. Pour oil over the milk. About ¼ cup. 4. Stir with the spoon then set the spoon to the side. Let the milk and oil separate and form oil clusters. Let’s imagine that this pan looks like our world and the oil is like all its people. 5. Now, every child (or half the children) can add drops of food coloring. These food coloring drop represent Christians. Christians live in the world among people who do not follow Christ. What if Christians only stayed in one place and never told people about Jesus? (Ask) Now what would you think the world would look like if Christians were to share God’s goodness and go out into the world to tell other people about Jesus. (Ask) 6. Then let the children (or other half of children) take turns lightly touching the soap end of a toothpick to one of the drops of food coloring. (Amazingly, the food coloring shoots out across the milk and oil and makes amazing colors.) 7. Continue doing this until the white plate is full of colors. Telling people about Jesus changes the world. Look how the colors spread and made a beautiful world. This makes Jesus happy when we share our love for Jesus with other people. Then these people can go tell others! 8. When you are finished, dump the contents of the foil pan into the bucket
