Is  9:1-‐7  But  there  will  be  no  more  gloom  for  her  who  was  in  anguish;  in  earlier

times  He  treated  the  land  of  Zebulun  and  the  land  of  Naphtali  with  contempt,  but  later   on  He  shall  make  it  glorious,  by  the  way  of  the  sea,  on  the  other  side  of  Jordan,  Galilee   of  the  Gentiles.    2  The  people  who  walk  in  darkness  will  see  a  great  light;  Those  who   live  in  a  dark  land,  The  light  will  shine  on  them.    3  You  shall  multiply  the  nation,  You   shall  increase  their  gladness;  They  will  be  glad  in  Your  presence  As  with  the  gladness   of  harvest,  As  men  rejoice  when  they  divide  the  spoil.  4  For  You  shall  break  the  yoke  of   their  burden  and  the  staff  on  their  shoulders,  The  rod  of  their  oppressor,  as  at  the   battle  of  Midian.    5  For  every  boot  of  the  booted  warrior  in  the  battle  tumult,  and  cloak   rolled  in  blood,  will  be  for  burning,  fuel  for  the  fire.  6  For  a  child  will  be  born  to  us,  a   son  will  be  given  to  us;  and  the  government  will  rest  on  His  shoulders;  And  His  name   will  be  called  Wonderful  Counselor,  Mighty  God,  Eternal  Father,  Prince  of  Peace.    7   There  will  be  no  end  to  the  increase  of  His  government  or  of  peace,  On  the  throne  of   David  and  over  his  kingdom,  to  establish  it  and  to  uphold  it  with  justice  and   righteousness  From  then  on  and  forevermore.  The  zeal  of  the  LORD  of  hosts  will   accomplish  this.

This  passage  gives  further  clarification  of  what  will  happen  with  the   coming  of  the  Messiah   He  is  prophesying  a  word  that  applies  to  the  Northern  Kingdom  of  Israel.     God  considered  these  2  people  (Israel  &  Judah)    as  one.       • The  people  in  the  North  had  their  own  prescribed  religious  expression  apart   from  the  Temple;  it  was  idolatrous.    The  region  to  the  north  was  looked  upon   by  those  in  the  south  as  being  shallow,  wrong.   • God  always  does  the  unexpected;  He  acts  in  such  a  way  that  breaks  our   notions  of  being  “special”,  “entitled”,  that  we  aren’t  “primary”  but  “only”  –   God’s  only  people.   • Even  while  Peter  was  preaching,  the  Holy  Spirit  fell  on  the  Gentiles  breaking   the  mold  of  expectation  &  understanding.    Even  when  God  does  great  things   among  us,  we  need  to  recognize  He  intends  to  good  in  other  places,  among   others  as  well.   • People  in  the  North  lived  in  religious  darkness;  into  that  dark  place  God,   intends  to  dispel  the  darkness   o That  is  what  He  intends  to  do  in  the  lives,  in  the  hearts  of  everyone  in   darkness   o To  dispel  the  darkness,  to  make  it  disperse  &  go  away  is  what  Christ   came  to  do.   o The  darkness-‐removing  light  of  Christ  is  the  birth  rite  of  everyone   who  believes.   o In  the  Bible  there  are  prescriptions  that  counter  the  darkness,  that   overcome  the  darkness.    God  is  faithful  to  such  truth.   • God  is  going  to  bring  victory,  as  in  the  day  when  Gideon  was  defeated  by   Gideon  in  the  day  of  the  Judges  (Chap  6)   o God  raised  up  a  victorious  leader  from  the  tribe  of  Manassas,  not  a   tribe  that  was  prophesied  as  being  a  tribe  from  which  leaders  would   come.   o In  his  persistence,  God  moved  on  Gideon  to  bring  about  the  greatest   victory  of  that  time  of  the  Judges.   o God  did  something  supernatural  –  and  this  was  the  promise   prophesied  by  Isaiah.   o Those  who  dwell  in  darkness,  God  is  going  to  bring  victory  that   overcomes  the  darkness.   • God  will  bring  peace  –  the  vanguishing  of  our  enemies  will  be  testified  by  the   residue  of  cloaks  &  boots  that  will  be  burnt  as  refuse.   o The  prophesy  points  to  what  appears  to  be  a  great  army,  yet  Isaiah   prophesied  that  this  would  come  with  the  coming  of  a  Son     I. Given  Son;  vs.  6       • Before  Christ  was  a  child,  He  was  the  Son  who  existed  from  eternity   • God  sent  His  Son  to  accomplish;  the  Son  who  is  100%  God  &  100%  Man  –  a   body  was  prepared  for  him  thru  Mary  and  He  came  to  show  the  love  of  God   •

• God  sent  His  son  to  become  the  2nd  Adam  who  would  be  sinless  and  allow   Him  to  take  our  sin  and  give  us  His  righteousness.   • God  gave  because  He  regarded  us  a  worth  it

II. Government  Borne...;  vs.  3     • His  government  would  be  reflected  in  the  insginias,  their  rank  worn  on   the  shoulder  as  an  emblem   • All  the  government,  all  the  rank,  all  the  authority  would  be  on  his   shoulders   o As  such  we  can  place  all  the  authority  of  our  lives  on  His   shoulders   o Only  God  can  implement  what  He  intends;  when  we  yield,  we   advance   o Whey  His  rule  &  direction  are  on  Him,  we  move  forward  into  the   purpose  of  God.   III.

Good  Titles;  vs.  4     A. Wonderful  (miraculous)  –  not  combined  with  Counselor,  but  rather  He  is  in   Himself,  Wonderful  –  able  to  do  what  makes  us  be  in  AWE  of  Him.    God  does   Wonders  when  He  does  what  we  can’t  accomplish  our  selves

B. Counselor  (esteemed  advisor)  –  He  is  wise  in  all  He  does.    Christ  always   had  the  right  answer;  He  baffled  his  accusers.    He  acted  with  authority   C. Mighty  God  –  “all  the  fullness  of  Deity  dwelt  in  Him”  –  He  kept  his  “God-‐ ness”  but  relinquished  His  priviledges.    All  that  God  was  dwelt  in  Him;   all  that  can  be  learned  about  water  can  be  learned  in  a  glass  of  water,   but  not  all  that  is  water  is  in  a  glass  of  water.    So  Christ  had  the  “fullness   of  God  dwelling  in  Him”.    He  is  Almighty.   D. Everlasting  Father  –  He  had  the  primary  place;  Christ  was  the  initiator   as  a  father  initiates.    So  was  Christ.   E. Prince  Of  Peace  (Rom  16:20)  –  He  is  about  destroying  the  source  of  all   that  bring  no  peace  –  the  Enemy  of  our  souls.     IV. Growing  Peaceful  Government;     vs.  5    -‐-‐  He  will  bring  an  increase  in  God’s  Government.    Are  there   limits  to  God’s  government  in  your  life?    Why  do  we  try  to  get   around  certain  things,  asking  what  we  “can”  do  rather  than  asking   God  what  we  “should”  do.    There  is  to  be  no  end  to  the  Government   of  His  Peace  in  our  lives,  tearing  down  what  stop  signs  there  may  be   that  resist  His  will  &  purpose.
