WASHINGTON — Rhetoric rose while the clock ticked down in the NFL’s labor talks, with the league and players’ SPORTS union trading NOTEBOOK back-and-forth barbs a day before the twice-extended collective bargaining agreement expires. With the two sides far apart on key economic issues, nine of the 10 members of the owners’ labor committee joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at the office of the federal mediator overseeing the negotiations — but, the union complained, none of the owners met with any of the players on hand. Even though there were smallgroup talks between NFL and union representatives on the 15th day of mediation, no one gave any indication that progress was made.

Big East refs withdraw NEW YORK — The three officials cited for two errors in the final seconds of the St. John’s-Rutgers game have withdrawn from the rest of the Big East tournament. Commissioner John Marinatto said the three officials have “voluntarily withdrawn” in “the best interests of those involved.” Veteran refs Jim Burr, Tim Higgins and Earl Walton missed two calls — a travel and stepping out of bounds — in the final 1.7 seconds of St. John’s 65-63 secondround victory Wednesday. Weeknight girls games reviewed RICHMOND — A federal appeals court is reviewing a lawsuit that accuses eastern Indiana schools of gender discrimination for scheduling girls high school basketball games on week nights, and not weekends. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago has been asked to determine if a district court judge in Indiana made a mistake last year when he granted the schools’ request for summary judgment in the case. Mahan storms Doral amid wind DORAL, Fla. — Television towers toppled and the monster scoreboard at Doral came crashing down when 50 mph gusts blew through the Blue Monster. Hunter Mahan then delivered some excitement of his own. Mahan birdied his opening four holes and kept right on rolling until the storm-delayed opening round was suspended by darkness. He didn’t miss a green or come close to a bogey in 11 holes and was 7 under. He was two shots clear of Charley Hoffman, who had a 5-under 67. Berra out of hospital CLEARWATER, Fla. — Yogi Berra was released from a hospital, hours after the 85-year-old Hall of Famer tripped and fell in the New York Yankees’ clubhouse before a spring training game. The Yankees said Berra went by ambulance to the hospital as a precaution after landing on his backside. Chara may face criminal charges BOSTON — Montreal police started a criminal investigation into the on-ice hit by Boston’s Zdeno Chara that left the Canadiens’ Max Pacioretty with a severe concussion and cracked vertebra.
