PASTOR MIKE’S MEMO Focus: What are you Thinking? Give Praise! As I write this column we are near the end of Vacation Bible School. Praise God for the average of 120 children we have had each day. I have on my right wrist a bracelet that says, “Living for His Glory.” We gave them to all the children and leaders to encourage and remind them to look and see how God is at work around them. The testimonies tell us that some are looking to see God in the kindness of others, in the beauty of creation, in the love of parents, in a delightful surprise that came their way, and in the truth of God’s Word, that reminds them that God is good, even when our circumstances in the moment do not appear to be so good. Circumstances have a way of stealing our joy, removing the smile from our face, and taking praise for God out of our hearts. You are not the first person to feel this way. Paul wrote the book of Philippians to a people of great heritage and reputation, but were down in the mouth (frowning), about his imprisonment. They were also dealing with their own situation. It even says it led to some bickering and disagreement with each other. “I can’t imagine.” When children get under your skin, and I love them, but they can. When another adult is critical, or things are not going your way, we can lose sight of the goodness of God and his gracious provision in our lives. When we begin comparing and coveting we can become bitter and angry. When we see changes and trends going opposite of what you had hoped, it can make you sad. Feelings are okay. God gave them to us. But, even our feelings are a gift that remind us to look back to Him and to give praise. You may say, that is easier said than done. And you are right! It was for the Philippians too. So Paul, ever the encourager, told them to trust God with their worries. Then, he gave them a “pep talk” reminder to give God praise. This was not just a positive thinking crash course. It was to draw their attention back from their perspective on circumstances to God. In case they could not think of anything, he said to think on these things: Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8 This will be a word study sermon series that hopefully encourages a Summer of Praise. July 7 July 14

Spotlight on…The Properties Team

We’re so grateful for the beautiful building and grounds God has given Newington. We’re also thankful for the team of people who keep that property up, running, and beautiful. Our properties team often works behind the scenes, but we can see the evidence of all they do---hanging signs, fixing leaks, mulching the flower beds, and handling large repairs like for our roof and A/C units. They can always use more team members. Maybe you’re handy with tools or maybe you’re great at keeping the grounds clean or maybe you’re just servant-hearted and love to be helpful. Please let us know if you can help our Properties Team!

ROAR VBS I’m writing this thank you message on the Friday before VBS begins. So far, we have over 100 kids registered and ready to come to VBS starting Monday morning. We’re super excited about what God is already doing with our VBS and so grateful that He answered our prayers for many volunteers and many children to attend. All week long, we’ll remind the kids that God is Good--even when life is scary, sad, or full of change, His Goodness remains the same. Thank you, Newington, for your prayers for VBS. Thank you for working together as a church to share the Good News about Jesus with more than 100 children in one week this summer. ~heather king~
