thePeace PeaceofofChrist Christ InInthe Dear Friends in Christ: Saint john Vianney

The tragic news of the comedian/actor Robin Williams’ suicide this past week is indeed sobering. Many people suffer from depression and deal with substance abuse, emotional and psychological issues. All of us should be aware that these are serious issues which can affect anyone Archdiocese of Galveston — Houston and any family, no matter how much money or success we have in life. There are dangers in glossing 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail over these issues. Our media saturated, celebrity addicted, society runs the risks of glamourizing Houston, TX 77079 suicide by lionizing the tragic deaths of those who take their own lives. At the same time, we can also Tel.: 281-497-1500 play into the “victimization” mentality that reduces everyone to becoming a victim and absolves Fax: 281-584-2024 individuals of all responsibility. Mental illness is a serious disease that affects not only the individual www.stjohnvianney.org who suffers from the illness but also affects their family and loved ones. Substance abuse (drugs and alcohol) and other addictive behaviors (sex, pornography, gambling, hording, obsessive shopping, ______________________________ etc.) are often connected to mental and emotional health issues. We see the tragic and destructive PARISH CLERGY results played out too often. But not everyone is a victim and many people with problems can also be Rev. R. Troy Gately helped. What can we do? Pastor First, we need to be honest. We must recognize that mental illness is just that – an illness and disease. We have to be truthful and recognize and not ignore the symptoms. We have to get Rev. Charles J. Talar appropriate help and treat the whole person and not just the disease or symptoms. It is difficult and Rev. Daniel L. Warden painful for all and hard decisions cannot be avoided without consequences. Just as we must care for Priests in Residence our physical health, we must also care and when needed, seek help for mental health. There is no shame or stigma in seeking mental health care. Secondly, we have to avoid the temptation to diminish Deacons the reality of mental illness and emotional difficulties by reducing everything and everybody to “a Dale Steffes condition” or “a problem” or “a victim.” Even people with emotional issues or addictive behaviors Al Vacek can still be helped and act responsibly and appropriately. It takes effort, but many can and do Fred Kossegi overcome and deal with their difficult situations successfully. We should never lose hope. We Randy Graham cheapen their efforts and their struggles when we glibly excuse our own bad behavior and choices by Louis Provenzano refusing responsibility or playing the victim card (‘I drink because I had a bad childhood’ or ‘I can’t hold a job ______________________________ because my 5th Grade teacher wasn’t affirming to me’). The only perfect person died on a cross. Life is hard for everybody. There are no perfect families or careers, schools, governments or churches for that PASTORAL STAFF matter. Thirdly, we cannot forget or exclude faith, hope and love. God is with us, all of us, every minute of every day. Mental illness and faith are not mutually exclusive, but not every emotional or Adult Forma$on mental problem is also a spiritual problem. Prayer and faith can be helpful to persons with emotional Yvonne Gill problems but again we should not look just for a spiritual solution to a psychological or psychiatric Youth Forma$on illness. In dealing with mental and emotional issues, both the person and those dealing with the person need hope and faith in God. God’s strength and help is there for us in dealing with all the Daniel Marcantel difficulties of life. Music Ministry Most important is love. No matter how much hurt, pain or suffering there is in the world or Michael Madrid in one’s life, God’s love for us is never vanquished. Suicide can be the result of mental illness or Pastoral Care/ severe emotional distress, but it is never the right answer. Taking one’s own life is a sin because it Spiritual Life closes one’s self off to love. For many persons who commit suicide, their illness or their severe Louis Provenzano distress clouds their judgment to where they can no longer appreciate the full impact of their actions. Their responsibility and guilt are diminished by their weakened capacity to fully appreciate the gravity Parish Life/ of their actions. But some people are aware and do make the sinful choice of taking their own lives. Ac$vity Center Suicide is never a loving choice as it inflicts harm and pain upon the self and upon those who love us. Richard Fairly “We are the stewards, not the owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.” (CCC. 2280) God is the sovereign master of life. God’s love never fails and we must always love and know of Social Service God’s love for us and for all. Lastly, as the Catechism states, ”we should never despair of the eternal salvation Ministries of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the salutary repentance. The Deborah Montez church prays for persons who taken their own lives.” (CCC 2283) As followers of Jesus, we believe that God Business Office is the God of hope, the God of mercy and the God of love! Social Ministries A Prayer for Peace Almighty eternal God, source of all compassion, the promise of your mercy and saving help fills our hearts with hope. Hear the cries of people around the world; bring healing to those suffering from violence, and comfort to those mourning the dead. Empower and encourage neighbors in their care and welcome for refugees. Convert the hearts of those who have taken up arms, and strengthen the resolve of those commi5ed to peace. O God of hope and Father of mercy, your Holy Spirit inspires us to look beyond ourselves and our own needs. Inspire leaders to choose peace over violence and to seek reconciliaEon with enemies. Inspire the Church around the world with compassion for all people, and fill us with hope for a future of peace built on jusEce for all. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and Light of the World, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. On Sunday, August 10th, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, said, “The news reports coming from Iraq leave us in dismay and disbelief.” News which speaks of the flight of thousands of people, among them so many ChrisEans, pushed from their homes with inconceivable violence, sent to die of hunger and thirst while seeking asylum. Or even massacred inhumanely, with the claim of being acts in the name of God. Pope Francis conEnued, “All this gravely offends God and humanity. Hatred is not to be carried in the name of God! War is not to be waged in the name of God!” Pope Francis urges us “to pray together to the God of peace through the intercession of the Virgin Mary: Give us peace, O Lord, in our days, and make us builders of jusEce and peace.” The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called a5enEon to numerous situaEons of violence that cry out for peace. There is the terrible conflict between Israel and Hamas that terrorizes Israeli civilians and has cost the lives of more than 1500 Gazans, most of whom are civilians. There are the alarming conflicts in Syria and Iraq that have caused millions to flee their homes and tens of thousands to lose their lives. We are mindful of the violent conflict in Ukraine. In Africa there are the oJen forgo5en clashes in South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Nigeria and the DemocraEc Republic of the Congo that have displaced millions. Closer to home, there is the violence in Central America that is driving unaccompanied children to seek refuge in our country. All of these tragic situaEons, and sadly many more, demand our prayer and acEon for peace. Pope Francis pleaded: “May the God of peace arouse in all an authenEc desire for dialogue and reconciliaEon. Violence cannot be overcome with violence. Violence is overcome with peace!” Let us join our prayers and calls to acEon with his.

At a Eme of terrible conflict, ChrisEans in the Holy Land desperately need our prayers and support. Please consider contribuEng to one of the following organizaEons that provide support and advocacy for humanitarian efforts, schools, housing, training and jobs, parishes, and educaEon: Catholic Relief Services (888) 277-7575 www.crs.org Catholic Near East Welfare AssociaEon (212) 826-1480 www.cnewa.org Franciscan FoundaEon for the Holy Land (202) 269-5430 www.Xl.org The Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (508) 752-3311 www.eohsjnortheast.org The Holy Land ChrisEan Ecumenical FoundaEon (301) 951-9400 www.hcef.org “We should never underes-mate the power of prayer; for it touches and opens us to the power of God among us. My prayer is that together we might help open our world to God’s gi of peace, a peace that the world cannot give (cf. John 14:27).” Joseph E. Kurtz, Archbishop of Louisville President, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Queenship of Mary Pius XII established this feast in 1954. But Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, Mary is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court. In the fourth century St. Ephrem (June 9) called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” Later Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship. The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In his 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power.
