Catholic Church

thePeace PeaceofofChrist Christ InInthe Dear Friends in Christ: What a wonderful Sunday! With the passing of Labor Day and the beginning of school, most of our parishioners are back from summer vaca!ons. Last Sunday, you could see the signs Catholic Church all over. At the 9:30 and 11:00 masses we nearly ran out of hosts at Communion, people were Archdiocese of Galveston — Houston standing at the Masses, Coffee & Donuts had the largest crowds ever (in spite of my forge,ng to 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail men!on it at the 8:00 Mass!) and of course, the parking! All in all, what a wonderful Sunday! Houston, TX 77079 Lots of people at church is a great and beau!ful blessing.

With the situa!on we find ourselves in, I would like to let you know what the parish is doing to help be1er address the blessing of increased a1endance. This year, we have added a www.stjohnvianney.org NEW night for religious educa!on for our children. In addi!on to Sundays and Mondays, we now ______________________________ have CCE on Wednesday evenings! In the last six years, we are blessed to have seen an increase of 1000+ students to our religious educa!on program. Of course, this means we need more PARISH CLERGY Rev. R. Troy Gately adults to serve as catechists and helpers. Happily, most of our posi!ons are filled, but we could s!ll use some more dedicated parishioners to serve in this ministry, especially for Children’s Pastor Liturgy of the Word, Jr. High and High School. Adding an addi!onal day helps relieve some of the Rev. Charles J. Talar crowding on Sunday and helps us reach even more children and families with the Good News of Priests in Residence Jesus. New as well, we now have our parish sextons assis!ng with direc!ng traffic. In addi!on to our licensed, professional law enforcement officers who control the traffic lights, direct street Deacons traffic and provide security, the sextons will aid in direc!ng drivers to the available parking in the Dale Steffes back parking lot. The Pastoral Council has a Parking/Traffic Commi1ee that is exploring possible Al Vacek improvements. We are also working on recrui!ng more Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Fred Kossegi Communion. Larger crowds at Mass means that communion !me expands and that has a ripple Randy Graham effect. At the larger Masses, we are adding addi!onal communion sta!ons to facilitate the Louis Provenzano numbers of communicants. We are also working to increase the number of ushers at Mass to ______________________________ assist people in finding seats so that they do not have to stand. We have a great group of ushers PASTORAL STAFF at all of our Masses, but we need more men and women to serve in this liturgical ministry. Adult Forma"on Yvonne Gill

Those are just some of the things that we are doing. What can you do? First and foremost, keep in mind why we come to Mass in the first place – to praise and thank God! So, keep God first! Crowds and traffic can be inconveniences, but what great problems to have. Thank God for so many people wan!ng to come to church. Be the wonderful parishioners that you are and prac!ce pa!ence, generosity and charity at all !mes. We have been blessed with over 600 new families to the parish in the last year. If you see someone new, offer them a warm welcome, introduce yourselves and help them in any way you can – introduce them to others, pray for them, get to know them and be sure to say hello next week too! Some prac!cal steps: prepare and an!cipate the situa!on. Do not expect to find a parking spot before the earlier Mass lets out. Time your arrival. Normally, it takes at least ten minutes before most of the cars can exit the parking lots. We have nearly 700 parking spots and only three exits, so it takes a li1le !me to move that many cars. If you drive through the neighborhood always drive with cau!on and courtesy. Try not to be late, come a few minutes early. If you try to get here exactly at Mass !me or when the other Mass is le,ng out, count on traffic. Look to park in the back where there is oDen available parking. Please do not park in illegal spots (driveways, fire lanes, handicapped reserved, etc.). This causes conges!on and is dangerous. What else? When you are si,ng in a pew, please do not make people climb over you to get a seat, scoot over and make room. If you must sit on the end of the pew, please sit on the center aisles. 1 of 2 Con’t

The exaltation of the Holy cross

2 of 2 If you are on the side, please move towards the center as the ushers fill in from the side aisles. More importantly, arrive early and be on !me! If everyone is in the pew for the beginning of Mass, we can spiritually prepare for Mass and we do not disturb others by arriving late. Please follow the direc!ons of the ushers. Please remember to save the handicapped sea!ng for those who have mobility difficul!es. Always try to sit as close as possible to the front and fill in from the front to the back. If you arrive late, please wait to be seated during the Responsorial Psalm or the Gospel Acclama!on and always follow the direc!ons of the ushers to available sea!ng. Please do not congregate in the narthex during Mass, please come into the church and be seated. On most Sundays, there is enough room in the church for everyone. The narthex is for when children get rambunc!ous and need a few moments to calm down, the cry rooms are for when infants and babies are crying and need a place so as not to disturb other worshipers. The narthex and the cry rooms are not playrooms but are part of church. We have the nursery open with wonderful caregivers during morning masses. Also, please remember to stay aDer Mass for a moment of thanksgiving. Thank God for the giD of being at Mass. When visi!ng aDer Mass (this is a good thing), be mindful of those s!ll praying in the church and do our visi!ng in the narthex or outside. What more can you do? Have you considered becoming an Usher, Greeter or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion? If not, why not? We can always use more smiling faces and helpful ministers at all of our masses. Also, please remember that there is always room and parking at the 8:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Masses as well as the evening Masses. Lastly, do someone a favor and invite them to Mass with you! In Pace Chris!,

The Exalta"on of the Holy Cross Early in the fourth century St. Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constan!ne, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ's life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradi!on held was built over the Savior's tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher over the tomb. During the excava!on, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was iden!fied when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of venera!on. At a Good Friday celebra!on in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscrip!on Pilate ordered placed above Jesus' head: Then "all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscrip!on, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, aDer kissing the cross, they move on." To this day the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exalta!on of the Holy Cross on the September anniversary of the basilica's dedica!on. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century aDer Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614, 15 years earlier. According to the story, the emperor intended to carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was unable to move forward un!l he took off his imperial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim.
