Catholic Church

thePeace PeaceofofChrist Christ InInthe Dear Friends in Christ: Saint john Vianney Living in secular society, where the primary emphasis is on “The Wedding!” many young

adult Catholics do not know what the Church teaches about marriage or what the proper practices concerning marriage are. Too many simply absorb what is present in the larger Archdiocese of Galveston — Houston 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail culture where the entrance into matrimony is an event. Likewise, many Catholics Houston, TX 77079 erroneously assume that what holds for Protestants is the same for Catholics. For Catholics, Holy Matrimony is a sacrament of the Church. Marriage is a permanent and Tel.: 281-497-1500 indissoluble union of a man and woman in Christ. The wedding is not merely an event, Fax: 281-584-2024 www.stjohnvianney.org but an official prayer and the administration of a sacrament of the Church. It is not just about the bride and the groom, it is a celebration of the Church, the Body of Christ. ______________________________ Catholic weddings are primarily an act of worship of God. Because this is different PARISH CLERGY from what many in society hold there are also many misunderstandings. Following are Rev. R. Troy Gately some questions and answers to help clarify the Catholic Church’s practice regarding Pastor marriage and weddings. Catholic Church

Rev. Charles J. Talar In Residence

Deacons Dale Steffes Al Vacek Fred Kossegi Randy Graham Louis Provenzano ______________________________

What is the proper place for Catholics to be married? Catholics should be married in a Catholic Church. Normally, in the parish of the Catholic bride. Can a Catholic marry a non-Catholic? While there are many happy and successful mixed faith marriages, couples who share the same faith and practice their faith have a higher rate of success in marriage than mixed faith couples or those who do not practice their faith. A Catholic may marry a non-Catholic with permission from the local bishop and with the promise that they will continue living their Catholic faith and that they will raise any and all children in the Catholic Faith.

What if the couple is of different religions, where can they be married? Normally, Catholics, even PASTORAL STAFF when marrying a non-Catholic, marry in the Catholic Church. With a dispensation and permission of the local bishop, a Catholic may be married in the church of a nonAdult Forma"on Catholic spouse. Yvonne Gill Youth Forma"on Daniel Marcantel

Does the non-Catholic have to convert to Catholicism? While we want to give witness to our faith and invite all people to consider becoming Catholic, no one is forced to convert to Catholicism. What about children? The Catholic party is asked to promise to continue living their Catholic Faith and to share their faith with any and all children they may have by having them baptized and raised as Catholics. Can a Catholic be married anywhere they want? (destination weddings). Because marriage is a sacrament and sacraments are normally celebrated in the Church, Catholic Weddings should take place in a Catholic Church. Are there exceptions? Of course. But it is generally for reasons of family harmony (the non -Catholic family has serious objections to attending a Catholic Church) or exceptional circumstances (a dying relative). Permission must be given by the local bishop. In Pace Christi,
