years now and there has been no policy change to help protect women and children.” Protests have erupted across India after the latest rape cases were reported. Police officers and a politician are under investigation in two of the unrelated cases. In a crime that shocked India, an eight-year-old Muslim girl in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir was kidnapped, drugged and held for several days while she was raped repeatedly

LONDON - Hundreds of noisy protesters greeted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he arrived in London on Wednesday, demonstrating over a rising tide of sexual violence at home, including two particularly brutal rapes. Holding placards reading “Modi go home” and “we stand against Modi’s agenda of hate and greed,” they gathered outside Downing Street and parliament as Modi arrived for talks with Prime Minister Theresa May. Modi later responded at an event in front of thousands of Indian, saying the rape cases were “a matter of great concern”, had brought “a shame” on the country and called for the perpetrators to be outed. Sexual violence against women is a highly charged political issue in India, where protests regularly erupt about entrenched violence against women and the failure to protect them. “The Indian government are doing nothing, and you feel sorry for the families because of the total injustice of it all,” said Navindra Singh, an Indian-born lawyer who lives in Britain. “He has been in power for four

and then murdered. In the other case, a state lawmaker from Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party stands accused of raping a teenager. No action was taken against the politician until the girl threatened to set herself on fire earlier this month. Her father died soon afterwards from injuries he suffered in police custody. Modi’s comments on Wednesday followed remarks last week, which came after a week of silence on the issue and promised justice regardless of whoever the guilty were. Nearly 40 percent of India’s rape victims are children, and the 40,000 reported rapes in 2016 marked a 60 percent increase over the level in 2012. But women’s rights groups say the figures are still gross underestimates. In London, a spokeswoman for a group of UK-based Indian students and alumni - who did not want her name to be used - said the group had come under fire after it sent a letter to Modi last week demanding action over the rape cases. The letter was signed by Indian

and Asian student groups from more than 20 British universities. She told Reuters many of the university groups had received calls from “UK-based individuals” pressuring them to remove their signatures from the letter, and that members of the group had not received tickets for Wednesday’s event with Modi, although the organizers had told they would. “The question you have to ask is are our voices being silenced,” she said. Modi, a Hindu nationalist, is a divisive figure in India and his second trip to Britain as prime minister represents a remarkable turnaround for a man who was once banned from the UK over his alleged role, as chief minister of Gujarat, in riots that killed about 1,000 people in 2002. Britain ended a boycott of Modi in 2012 after he emerged from being a provincial politician to the likely leader of the world’s largest democracy. He has denied wrongdoing and was exonerated by an inquiry ordered by India’s Supreme Court.

ANALYSIS

Despite changes after 2012 horror, India’s rape victims denied speedy justice

A girl holds a placard during a protest against the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, near Jammu, in Kochi, India on April 15, 2018.

By Aditya Kalra MUMBAI - India launched fast-track courts and a tougher rape law that included the death penalty after a gruesome assault on a young woman shocked the country in 2012, but crime statistics indicate the situation has got worse, not better, since then. The data was collated by Reuters amid mounting public anger over crimes against women after two horrific cases in re-

cent months that has, once again, cast a harsh light on systemic problems plaguing the country’s police and courts. The gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kashmir state and the arrest of a ruling party legislator for the rape of a teenage mother in Uttar Pradesh province have sparked nationwide outrage, drawing nightmarish parallels with the gang rape and murder of a student in New Delhi six years ago.

Amid the wave of anger at that time, the government promised to speed up rape trials, provide harsher penalties, including the death sentence in extreme cases, and a law against stalking. But statistics show that since 2012, reported rape cases climbed 60 percent to around 40,000 in 2016, with child rape accounting for about 40 percent. The conviction rate of people arrested for rape remains stuck around 25 percent. The backlog of rape cases pending trial stood at more than 133,000 by the end of 2016, up from about 100,000 in 2012, National Crime Records Bureau data showed. In each year during that period, about 85 percent of the total rape cases being heard remained pending. In general, conviction rates for crime against women - deaths following demands for dowry, assault, kidnapping as well as rape - are lower than for most other crimes. “The government can make a hundred laws and yet it will fail because there is no enforcement,” said Dushyant Dave, a senior lawyer at India’s Supreme Court. “It needs to take this as an epidemic and treat it accordingly, by completely overhauling the police

machinery, prosecutors and the judicial system.” CASES BURIED Crime statistics showed that police files remain open for about a third of all rapes that were investigated for each year between 2012 and 2016. Understaffing is an issue. The government told parliament last month police had a sanctioned strength of nearly 2 million officers, but almost a quarter of those positions were vacant. Some of the worst accusations against the police stem from cases, like the ones in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, where they are alleged to have bowed to pressure from people of influence to bury cases. Vappala Balachandran, a former top police officer in the western state of Maharashtra who has criticised the government’s response to the recent cases, described how powerful local politicians stall police investigations. “The one weapon the politician has is the threat of transfer (of police officers) and which they routinely exercise. So the investigation is slow, improper and weak,” Balachandran said. So far the only policy response

to the latest cases has come from Maneka Gandhi, the minister for women and child development, who has advocated applying the death penalty for rape cases where the victim is under 12 years old. Currently, the Supreme Court reserves the death penalty for extreme cases, as in the 2012 Delhi case. Five people were convicted of rape and murder in that case within nine months, a remarkably swift decision for India. Four were sentenced to death while a juvenile was freed after serving three years. A sixth accused hung himself in his cell before the trial concluded. Last year, the top court rejected an appeal by the four sentenced to death but they remain on death row. A study by the National Law University in Delhi found that 43 death sentences were handed down for murder involving sexual violence in 2017, almost double the previous year’s number. A study by Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, whose founder shared the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, reckoned that as of the end of 2016, the backlog of child sex abuses cases in the courts would take two decades to clear.

Indian American singer Alyssa Raghu eliminated from “American Idol” Sussett. They will perform in the live show at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC. After being eliminated, Raghu posted on Instagram, “Incredibly thankful for the opportunity I’ve been given with @ americanidol. Thank you so much for all the love and support you guys give me every single day. I will not stop. So so grateful this has become my life. I’m living my dream, and you guys are making it possible.” Weeks back in her introduction video, Raghu revealed that she was raised by her father Dennis Raghunandan, after her parents got divorced when she was just two-years-old. She also said that her father is her ‘best friend’, who helped her with a career in music and for being with her at every audition. “My parents were divorced when I was two years old…When my mom left, it was really my dad who stayed to support me constantly,” said Raghu. She released her first song, “Leave,” in 2017, which is available on iTunes and Spotify. From early on in the show, judge Katy LOS ANGELES - Indian-origin singer from Orlando, Florida Alyssa Raghu’s run on “American Idol” has ended. The 16-year-old, a sophomore at Lake Nona High School, made it to the Top 24. But she was not among the singers who advanced to the Top 14 in Monday’s episode. Raghu (shortened from Raghunandan) had done well on Sunday’s show with her version of Rihanna’s “Stay.” Judge

Katy Perry had championed Raghu and praised the teen’s tone. But Raghu’s duet with Banners on Coldplay’s “Yellow” underwhelmed the judges on Monday’s telecast. The Top 14 are Ada Vox, Cade Foehner, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Catie Turner, Dennis Lorenzo, Gabby Barrett, Garrett Jacobs, Jonny Brenns, Jurnee, Maddie Poppe, Mara Justine, Marcio Donaldson, Michael J. Perry was super impressed with Raghu that the “Roar” singer even tweeted words of praise for Raghu. She wrote, “You’re my hero,” and also tagged Raghu on Twitter. For the auditions, Raghu performed a rendition of Ariana Grande’s famous track – “Almost Is Never Enough”. Her performance captivated all the three judges on the show - Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Alyssa was given the ‘Ticket to Hollywood’. Alyssa’s performance on YouTube has been liked over 73k times. The sixteenth season of reality TV series, American Idol, airs on ABC. The nationwide search for the next superstar kicked off in August 2017, as the Idol bus traveled from Portland, Oregon, to Orlando, Florida, in its pursuit for talent, covering 23 cities across the country. Auditioning was made easier than ever as hopefuls also had the opportunity to submit audition videos online, as well as via select social media platforms using an official tag, #TheNextIdol, cultivating over 300,000 posts. Indian among 3 Nike execs that depart amid probe into workplace behavior NEW YORK (AP) - Three more Nike executives are leaving amid the company's efforts to overhaul workplace culture. They are Vikrant Singh, a senior brand director for the Nike basketball brand in North America; Daniel Tawiah, vice president of global brand digital marketing innovation; and Antoine Andrews, vice president of diversity and inclusion. Nike spokesman Greg Rossiter confirmed the departures but declined to say why they were leaving.

They come a month after Nike's CEO Mark Parker reportedly sent a memo to employees regarding inappropriate workplace behavior and plans to overhaul its leadership. That included the resignation of Trevor Edwards, seen as Parker's successor, and the exit of another executive, Jayme Martin. Nike is the latest thrust into a movement that has spread after reports of sexual harassment allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Brawl at Sikh temple in Indiana leaves 4 injured GREENWOOD, IN (AP) - Police say a brawl at a Sikh temple in suburban Indianapolis has left four people with minor injuries. Greenwood Assistant Police Chief Matthew Fillenwarth says police and medics responded Sunday to a verbal and physical fight involving about 150 people at the Gurdwara Sikh temple in the city just south of Indianapolis. He tells WISH-TV the altercation began

as there was a change of leadership within the temple that he says happens every two years. Fillenwarth says it’s believed that there was a worship service going on when the fight broke out. Fillenwarth says four people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, where they will be questioned by police. Police are reviewing surveillance video from the temple and interviewing other participants in the fight.

By Suvashree Choudhury MUMBAI - The government and the Reserve Bank of India said on Tuesday they will ensure there is an adequate amount of cash in circulation, following reports that banks’ automated teller machines (ATMs) had run out of notes in different parts of the country. The RBI said it had ramped up printing of notes despite having sufficient cash in its vaults and currency chests. “As a matter of abundant precaution, RBI is also taking steps to move currency to areas which are witnessing unusually large cash withdrawals,” the central bank said in a statement late on Tuesday. Cash withdrawals in India go up during the crop harvest season, which is usually during March to April, and then during the festival season in October. But there has been an unusual rise in currency demand in the last three months. That is a source of worry for policymakers because a sustained heavy currency with-

drawal suggests people may be hoarding cash again. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had ordered a shock ban on high-value currency notes in late 2016, in a move aimed at flushing out hoarded cash and curbing the funding of terrorism. “The total stock of currency has come down but still we have notes worth more than two trillion rupees ($30 billion) in stock which is more than sufficient,” said the government’s economic affairs secretary Subhash Chandra Garg. Currency withdrawal by individuals during January-March 2018 was at 1.4 trillion rupees, sharply higher than 1.1 trillion rupees in the same quarter of 2016, according to Reserve Bank of India data. The March 2017 quarter data is not comparable as the RBI was in the process of re-injecting currency notes after the so-called demonetisation in November 2016. The RBI on Tuesday said that the shortages in some pockets might be due to the logistics of replenishing ATMs and that

the recalibration of machines was underway. “RBI is closely monitoring both these aspects,” it said. While it is difficult to trace any specific reason for such massive cash withdrawals this year, analysts say that concerns over the health of India’s banking system has also led savers to withdraw cash. India’s banking system has been fraught with challenges including a surge in bad loans and a recent revelation of a $2-billion fraud at the country’s second-largest state lender Punjab National Bank. Investors have also been wary of issues surrounding the chief executives of two big private sector lenders - ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. Cash withdrawals have gone up sharply in the last three months especially in states of Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, the government said in a release adding that it would be “supplying adequate currency notes to meet even higher levels of demand if such demand were

to continue in the coming days/ months”. The government also dismissed concerns over an insufficient supply of the high-value

2000 rupee note while acknowledging that there was a lower inflow of the highest-denominated notes coming back into circulation.

By Suvashree Choudhury MUMBAI - Days after a lawmaker from India’s ruling party was arrested in connection with a teenager’s rape, a sexual attack on an 11-year-old girl was reported on Sunday in Gujarat, the latest in a string of cases that have sparked protests across the country. Protests calling for justice were held in several cities, echoing

the mass rallies against sexual violence in 2012 and piling pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who must hold elections by May 2019. Modi has promised to take action. Activists accuse authorities of failing to protect women and of moving too slowly to investigate and arrest perpetrators. The protests were fuelled in part by the arrest of a lawmaker

At least 27 killed as school bus plunges off Indian mountain road NEW DELHI - At least 24 children and three adults were killed when a school bus plunged off a mountain road in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh last Monday, police said. Santosh Patial, a senior police officer in Himachal Pradesh, said they had recovered 27 bodies from the accident site. The adult dead included the driver The tragedy occurred when the bus swerved off the road and fell into a gorge. The bus was transporting children, all below the age of 13, who were studying at a private school in Nurpur town, 300 km (185 miles) from Shimla, the state capital.

“We have identified all the children and parents have been informed about the disaster,” said Ram Nath Singh, a police officer at the accident site. Singh said three children with head injuries were taken to a government hospital. India has the world’s deadliest roads, with almost 150,000 people killed in accidents in 2015, the latest government data shows. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep anguish over the tragedy. “My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident,” he said in a tweet.

from the Bharatiya Janata Party last week in connection with the rape of a teenager in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, which the ruling party governs. In the southern city of Thiruvananthapuram, protesters formed a human chain, while in Mumbai, hundreds, including film celebrities, called for the death penalty for rapists. In New Delhi they called for rape trials to be completed in six months. In the western Gujarati city of Surat, where the latest case took place, men and women held a silent candlelight march. Gujarat is Modi’s home state, where he was the Chief Minister from 2001 until he took national office in 2014. “The body was recovered on April 6 by the side of a highway and, according to a post mortem report, the girl was sexually assaulted and murdered on April 5,” Surat’s police commissioner, Satish Sharma, told Reuters. He said the victim - who was 11 years old, according to the postmortem - had not yet been identified and that police from neighbouring states have been asked to help find her family. “We have put our best teams in place with all senior police officials. first need to identify the body,” Sharma said. The post-mortem revealed the girl had been strangled and smothered, with 86 signs of minor injuries, including sexual assault, he said. Some of the injuries were old. Details have also emerged in a separate case of an eight-year-old Muslim girl belonging to a nomadic tribe that roams the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir who was kidnapped, drugged and held in captivity as eight Hindu men assaulted her. There had been little progress made in the case until activists stepped up their campaign for an investigation. “Let’s not pretend that these are all isolated cases and hap-

pened out of the blue,” film actor and director Nandita Das said at the Mumbai protest. “We have brought it upon ourselves as a society and we have to find a solution for it.” The United Nations is among the international bodies that have condemned the problem. “We are deeply concerned about the prevalence of genderbased violence, including sexual violence against women and girls, which we are witnessing in India,” Yuri Afanasiev, the UN resident coordinator in India, said in a statement last week. India registered about 40,000 rape cases in 2016, up from 25,000 in 2012, government data show. Rights activists say thousands more go unreported.

South India’s ‘Tollywood’ film industry tackles sex trafficking

Tollywood churns out more films than its globally popular counterpart Bollywood and has major influence in the Teluguspeaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The six films - dramas designed to deter young men from buying sex - were made by some of Tollywood’s biggest production houses

as part of a ‘Stop Demand’ initiative by anti-trafficking charity Prajwala and the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad. “Nearly 30 percent of the girls trafficked are lured by opportunities to model or act in films,” said Sunitha Krishnan, founder of Prajwala. “(Roping in) Tollywood is important. They are opinion makers,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation at an antitrafficking conference where the films were shown. Prajwala estimates that 200,000 women and children in India are forced into prostitution every year through threat and coercion.

Of an estimated 20 million commercial sex workers in India, 16 million women and girls are victims of sex trafficking, according to campaign and support groups working in India. The states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are major source states for girls who are trafficked to various parts of the country, with Maharashtra, Delhi and Goa being major destinations, studies show. NEW DELHI (AP) - Thousands of people protested across India on Sunday to seek an end to sexual violence against women, which has been on the rise in the country. Carrying banners and placards, protesters marched in New Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, demanding that India’s government quickly prosecute rape suspects. Candlelight vigils were also held in some places. The outrage was triggered by the rape and murder of an 8-yearold girl in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir and the ab-

Many protesters expressed particular anger at India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party for initially siding with the accused in the Kashmir case. The young victim was a Muslim and the accused are Hindus. A total of at least nine suspects, including a lawmaker from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and four police officials, have been arrested in the two cases. Violent crime against women has been on the rise in India

despite tough laws enacted in 2013. In 2012, the fatal gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi triggered massive protests by hundreds of thousands to demand stricter rape laws in the country. The outrage over the New Delhi attack spurred quick action on legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women. Indian lawmakers also voted to lower to 16 from 18 the age at which a person can be tried as an adult for heinous crimes.

By Simon Cameron-Moore and Sanjeev Miglani NEW DELHI - As India’s rape epidemic gets worse by the year, critics have pointed fingers at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government for not doing enough to protect the country’s women. During the past week, his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been battered by a nationwide storm over two rapes. One involved the abduction, gang rape and murder of an eightyear-old Muslim girl by Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir state, where two BJP ministers in the provincial government were forced to resign after initially offering support for the accused rapists. Eight men are on trial for the crime, which has led to a wave of revulsion and anger in the country. In the other case, a BJP legislator in Uttar Pradesh state, India’s most populous, stands accused of raping a teenager. When Modi came to office in 2014, he coined the slogan “save our daughters, teach our daughters”, but right now that message is ringing hollow. Nearly 40 percent of India’s rape victims are children. And the 40,000 reported rapes in 2016

marked a 60 percent increase over the level in 2012 - the year that a sickening rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in the capital New Delhi sparked nationwide demonstrations. Yet, by the time Modi addressed the outrage over the latest rapes last week by promising justice regardless of whoever the guilty were, critics had already hammered the prime minister for his silence. The economy and increasing intolerance towards religious minorities are expected to be the main issues for a general election due by next year and Modi remains a frontrunner with a splintered opposition struggling to narrow the distance. But analysts foresaw the opposition Congress and regional parties tapping a well of discontent over the BJP’s weak response to the rapes, especially among better informed urban voters. “There will be political fallout, every party will go to town over it,” said Neera Chowdhury, a political columnist, describing Modi’s hesitancy to speak out on cases involving his own party members as “most worrying”. With Modi away on an official visit to Europe that began on Tuesday, the criticism has been

mounting. In an open letter published on Tuesday, Yashwant Sinha, a member of the BJP’s old guard and frequent critic of Modi’s government, beseeched the prime minister to speak and act more forcibly on vital issues, including the appalling rapes. “Women are more unsafe today than ever before,” wrote Sinha, a finance and foreign minister in earlier BJP governments. “Rapes have become the order of the day and instead of acting strictly against the rapists we have become their apologists. In many cases, our own people are involved in these heinous crimes.” A day earlier, 50 retired civil servants, including ambassadors, police chiefs and senior bureaucrats, several of them known for taking stands against the BJP government, sent their own letter castigating the party. Vappala Balachandran, a former top police officer in the western state of Maharashtra, was one of the signatories. Speaking to Reuters, he singled out Modi for failing “to set the moral tone” once details of the rapes in Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh states came to light. “Rapes have happened under every government and will continue

to happen but you expect a leader to speak out,” said Balachandran. In Uttar Pradesh, the rape victim attempted to set fire to herself outside the state BJP chief minister’s residence to get police to investigate her accusations against a BJP lawmaker, after being ignored for nine months. Speculation was gathering, according to a BJP official in the state capital Lucknow, that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath could be asked to resign to soothe public anger over the handling of the case. A ruling party spokesman declined to comment on the speculation. In Jammu and Kashmir, the communal dimension of the case could spoil the BJP’s relations with the mainly Muslim party that it shares power with in the state, and

pose a security risk in a region disputed with Pakistan and ravaged by a long-running Muslim militant insurgency. Laying all blame for the rape crisis at the door of the BJP government is obviously unfair, but critics of the right-wing conservative party and its Hindutva or Hindu nationalist agenda accuse it of pandering to backward attitudes that suppress women. The opposition Congress party has seized on the public revulsion over the rapes. Its leader Rahul Gandhi led the first protest, with a candlelight vigil at India Gate, the war memorial at the centre of the capital where mass crowds had gathered to demonstrate their disgust and shame after the rape in 2012.

Pakistan bars former PM Sharif from holding office for life

FILE PHOTO: Pakistan’s former prime minister Nawaz Sharif speaks during a news conference in Islamabad, Pakistan.

By Saad Sayeed and Syed Raza Hassan ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s Supreme Court disqualified deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif from holding office for life last Friday amid an ongoing corruption trial and ahead of general elections due this year. The Supreme Court barred Sharif, 67, from politics in July over an undeclared source of income, but the veteran leader maintains his grip on the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, even though he is no longer its leader. Last Friday’s ruling addressed

an ambiguity over whether he was barred for life or for a specific period for not being honest. The ruling was an interpretation of a constitutional article that has been used to remove legislators from office before, a senior lawyer said. Sharif and his family have called the corruption proceedings a conspiracy, hinting at intervention by the military, but opponents have hailed them as a rare example of the rich and powerful being held accountable. The military denies any such intervention. Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb told reporters “nameless and faceless people” had interfered to orchestrate Sharif’s

political demise and the downfall of the PML-N. “Now today they disqualified (Sharif) for life. But people of Pakistan will decide whether the disqualification of an elected prime minister is for one day or for life,” she added. Sharif is currently appearing before an accountability court in Islamabad on other charges linked to London properties his family owns - proceedings ordered by the Supreme Court last July that could see him jailed if found guilty. Sharif has served as prime minister three times and each time

was removed from office - in 1993 by presidential order, in 1999 by a military coup that saw him jailed and later exiled before returning when General Pervez Musharraf stepped down, and in 2017 over the corruption probe. His allies have called the proceedings a political vendetta. “It’s a significant decision because it will ... also have implications for the future,” senior lawyer and former president of Pakistan Wasim Sajjad told Reuters. “If it is found by a court of law that any person wanting to be a member of parliament has furnished particulars which are

found false or omitted to furnish particulars which are necessary, then he will come under that category of persons disqualified for life.” Sharif was also removed as head of the party he founded when the courts overturned a legal amendment by PML-N lawmakers in February that allowed him to remain party president despite being disqualified from public office. Despite not being party leader, Sharif has considerable sway over the workings of the PML-N and enjoys the support of its core leadership.

CBI files case against former UCO Bank chairman NEW DELHI - The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against a former chairman of state-run UCO Bank and several business executives alleging criminal conspiracy that caused a loss of 6.21 billion rupees ($95.17 million). Police said officials at the bank had colluded with private infrastructure firm Era Engineering Infra Ltd, and investment banking firm Altius Finserve Pvt Ltd, to siphon bank loans. The case reveals yet another

banking fraud in India since February when two jewellery groups were accused of using nearly $2 billion of fraudulent bank guarantees, in what has been dubbed the biggest fraud in India’s banking history. That case put the banking sector under a cloud, with the CBI unearthing a string of other bank frauds since then. In the UCO Bank case, it charged Arun Kaul, the bank’s chairman between 2010-2015, and several officials and accountants at

the two companies with criminal conspiracy with an intention to defraud the bank of about 6.21 billion rupees by diverting and siphoning loans, according to the statement. “The loan was not utilized for the sanctioned purpose and was secured by producing false end use certificates issued by the chartered accountant and by fabricating business data,” the CBI said. The offices of the companies, accountants and the residences of the accused are being searched, the CBI said.

People participate in a protest against the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua near Jammu, and a teenager in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh state, in Mumbai on India, April 15, 2018.

By Aijaz Hussain and Muneeza Naqvi SRINAGAR (AP) - The girl, just 8 years old, was grazing her family’s ponies on a chilly January day in the forests of the Himalayan foothills when she was kidnapped. Her raped and mutilated body was found in the woods a week later. In 2012, the fatal gang rape of a young woman in the heart of India’s capital moved hundreds of thousands of Indians to take to the streets to demand stricter rape laws. But the gang rape, torture and death of a Muslim girl in Indian-controlled Kashmir has seen far different protests: Thousands of members of a radical Hindu group with links to the ruling party have marched to demand the release of the six men accused in the repeated rape and killing of the girl inside a Hindu temple. Hundreds of Hindu lawyers have protested that the men, two of them police officers, are innocent. The girl, who was savaged in the attacks, had enormous eyes, a quiet smile and one name: Asifa. The Associated Press doesn’t usually identify victims of sexual violence but her name has been widely reported in the Indian media. There have always been differences between India’s Muslim minority and Hindu majority in this constitutionally secular nation of 1.3 billion. Violence has flared sporadically over the decades since India gained freedom from Britain in 1947, sparking bloody religious riots as the subcontinent was partitioned to create largely Hindu India and largely Muslim Pakistan. For the most part, though, day-to-day interactions between Hindus and Muslim have been largely peaceful. But that polite distance has widened into a schism since 2014, when the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, was swept into power in a decisive election victory. India’s religious minorities, especially the Muslims who form 13 percent of the population, have felt increasingly isolated since then, as attacks by Hindu extremist groups have risen. So it was in Kathua, the small town in Jammu-Kashmir state where the girl was attacked. Police say the attack had been planned for over a month as a way to terrify the Bakarwals, a Muslim community of nomadic herders, into leaving the area. Conflict had been brewing in recent years between Muslim nomads and local Hindus over land disputes. Hindus claimed the herders were encroaching on

their lands. There had been scuffles after nomadic girls had been allegedly harassed by Hindu men. Kashmir has over 1 million nomadic herders, including the Bakarwals, who mainly tend flocks of sheep, goats and horses. For centuries they have migrated every summer to highland pastures and forests, and returned to the plains of Jammu in winter to graze their animals, living in temporary shelters. But over the past 20 years some have begun settling in permanent homes, usually built in forests, sparking conflicts with people already living in those areas. “For some time now the tensions have been high between Muslims and some Hindus’’ in the area around Kathua, said Javaid Rahi, who runs Jammu-Kashmir Tribal Foundation, a nonprofit group studying the state’s nomadic people. “The crisis has especially deepened since the BJP has come to the power and some fanatic Hindus in Jammu have communally polarized the atmosphere,’’ he said. Police say the attack on Asifa was rooted in religious politics, with a group of local men planning to scare away the Bakarwals by simply kidnapping a girl. But once they had Asifa, that plan was quickly forgotten. Forensic reports say she had been drugged with anti-anxiety medication, repeatedly raped, burned, bludgeoned with a rock and strangled. Eventually, her corpse was thrown into the forest where it was found a week later. Soon after the suspects were arrested, members of the extremist Hindu Ekta Manch, or Hindu Unity Platform, marched through the streets of Jammu, the largest city in southern Kashmir, carrying a massive Indian flag, chanting “Long Live India!’’ and demanding that police release the men. The group has links to the ruling BJP, and two BJP lawmakers have publicly defended the accused men. Last Monday, Hindu lawyers in Kathua tried to block police from filing their investigation report at the local court. They said the police investigation was flawed and claimed the six Hindu men accused in the attack had been framed. The police were forced to call for backup before handing the report of their investigation to the judge at his home. Six men, including two police officers, are accused of being directly involved in the attacks on Asifa. One of those policemen also allegedly joined in the search for her body. Two other policemen were arrested for attempts to destroy evidence.

Eight on trial for rape, murder of 8 year old girl in Kashmir

Sanji Ram arrives for a court appearance after he was arrested in connection with the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, south of Jammu on April 16, 2018.

By Fayaz Bukhari SRINAGAR - Eight men accused of involvement in the rape and murder of an eight-yearold Muslim girl in Jammu and Kashmir state appeared in court on Monday for the first hearing in a case that sparked nationwide outrage and criticism of the ruling party. The girl, from a nomadic community that roams the forests of Kashmir, was drugged, held captive in a Hindu temple and sexually assaulted for a week before being strangled and battered to death with a stone in January, police said.

Public anger at the crime led to protests in cities across India over the past few days, with outrage fuelled by support for the accused initially shown by state government ministers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The protests have also focused on another rape allegedly involving a BJP lawmaker in crime-ridden Uttar Pradesh, a poor northern state with the country’s biggest population. The outrage has drawn parallels with massive protests that followed the gang rape and murder of a woman on a Delhi bus in 2012, which forced the then Congress-

led government to enact tough new rape laws including the death penalty. Yet India has long been plagued by violence against women and children - reported rapes climbed 60 percent from 2012 to 40,000 in 2016, and many more go unreported, especially in rural areas. Reports of torture, rape and murder of another child have emerged from Modi’s western home state of Gujarat. In that case, the corpse of a girl was found near a cricket ground in the city of Surat a week ago. The post-mortem showed she had been tortured and sexually assaulted before being strangled. The body had 86 injury marks, including some inflicted to her genitalia with hard, blunt objects, while more minor injuries suggest she had been beaten with a stick or slapped. Doctors estimate that the unidentified girl was about 12, police said. As the groundswell of revulsion grew, Modi assured the country last Friday that the guilty would not be shielded, but he has been criticised for failing to speak out sooner. Before leaving for an official visit to Europe this week, Modi

received a letter from 50 former police chiefs, ambassadors and senior civil servants upbraiding the political leadership over its weak response. “The bestiality and the barbarity involved in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old child shows the depths of depravity that we have sunk into,” the former officials said. “In post-Independence India, this is our darkest hour and we find the response of our government, the leaders of our political parties inadequate and feeble.” The letter went further by blaming the BJP and like-minded rightwing Hindu groups for promoting a culture of “majoritarian belligerence and aggression” in Jammu, and in the Uttar Pradesh case it blasted the party for using feudal strongmen, who behave like gangsters, to shore up its rule. The former officials said they held no political affiliation other than to uphold the values of India’s secular constitution that guarantees equal rights to all citizens. In 2012, voters ousted the Congress chief minister of Delhi because of the fallout from the rape case. This time, Congress was quick to realise the mood of the

country, with party leader Rahul Gandhi leading the first major protest in the capital last week. On Monday, Gandhi tweeted that there had been nearly 20,000 child rapes in India in 2016, and urged Modi to fast-track prosecutions “if he is serious about providing ‘justice for our daughters’”. Though the rape and killing of the girl in Kashmir had been known about for months, the backlash erupted after the charge sheet giving gruesome details of the crime was filed last week. It alleged that the attack was part of a plan to drive the nomads out of Kathua district in Jammu, the mostly Hindu portion of India’s only Muslim-majority state. The alleged ringleader of the campaign, retired bureaucrat Sanji Ram, looked after a small temple where the girl had been held and assaulted. Two of the eight on trial are police officers who stand accused of being bribed to stifle the investigation. After Monday’s initial hearing in Srinagar, the judge adjourned the case until April 28 while the Supreme Court heard a petition from the lawyer representing the victim’s family to have the trial held elsewhere due to fears for her safety.

By Biswajeet Banerjee LUCKNOW (AP) - A lawmaker from India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party was arrested after being accused of abducting and raping a teenage girl last year, officials said. Kuldeep Singh Sengar was arrested last Friday after being questioned by authorities in Lucknow, the capital of northern Uttar Pradesh state, said Abhishek Dayal, a spokesman for India’s Central Bureau of Investigation. He denies the allegation. The teen also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gov-

erning Bharatiya Janata Party of shielding the lawmaker and police of delaying his prosecution. Violent crimes against women have been on the rise in India despite tough laws enacted in 2013. In 2012, the fatal gang rape of a young woman in the heart of New Delhi prompted hundreds of thousands of Indians to take to the streets to demand stricter rape laws. The outrage over the New Delhi attack spurred quick action on legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalizing voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women. Indian

lawmakers also voted to lower to 16 from 18 the age at which a person can be tried as an adult for heinous crimes. The girl told reporters last Thursday that Sengar was known to her family because they were from the same village in Uttar Pradesh state. She accused Sengar of raping her in June last year when she went to his home in Unnao district, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Lucknow. Federal investigators said the teenager’s family also accused four other people of kidnapping and raping her. Police are investigating the complaint.

India’s top court rejects calls for probe into judge’s death NEW DELHI - India’s Supreme Court dismissed on Thursday petitions calling for an investigation into the death of a lower court judge in 2014 when he was presiding over a case against a top political aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Amit Shah, president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, had been accused of ordering extra judicial killings in 2005 while

serving as home minister in the western state of Gujarat. Shah was discharged by the judge who took over the case after the death of Judge B. Loya, having decided there was no case against the BJP president. Judge Loya died from a heart attack, but family members questioned the circumstances, alleging that he had come under political pressure in the case. Petitions were filed in the Supreme

Court seeking an independent probe after judges in a lower court had dismissed the need for a probe. The Supreme Court decision to dismiss the petitions was taken by a three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. The judgment said there was “no reason to doubt the statements of sitting judges” and the intent of the petitioners had been to “malign the judiciary”.

India ruling party lawmaker arrested on rape allegation

Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a legislator of Uttar Pradesh state from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reacts as he leaves a court after he was arrested on Friday in connection with the rape of a teenager, in Lucknow, India on April 14, 2018.

The girl said she protested to state authorities in August last year but nothing happened. She and her family moved to New Delhi because they felt threatened by the lawmaker and his supporters and she sent petitions to India’s president, the prime minister and the state police chief seeking help. Last week, she visited the office of the state’s top elected official, Yogi Adiyanath. When she was denied meeting with state officials, she took out kerosene and tried to set herself on fire.

The lawmaker’s brother, Atul Sengar, and his supporters have been accused of beating up the girl’s father and Atul Sengar was arrested this week for causing the father’s death. The father was arrested after the beating because of a pending charge of possessing unlicensed guns and died, triggering protests. Internal injuries caused by the beating and blood poisoning were listed as causes of death. The Associated Press generally does not name people who say they are a victim of a sex crime.

Another path to a medical degree - Saint James School of Medicine

Do you aspire to be a doctor? Do you believe you have what it takes? Have you struggled gaining acceptance to US medical schools or sitting for the MCAT? Every year, the United States medical school application process weeds out more would-be doctors than the rigorous curriculum. Each year more than 50,000 students apply for traditional medical schools but unfortunately only about 40% of applicants will actually matriculate into full-time students. Limited spots in US medical schools breed excessive competition that leaves many qualified applicants seemingly out of options. There’s another path to a medical degree, Saint James School of Medicine - an accredited, affordable Caribbean medical school with two campuses. SJSM students receive the same high-quality medical education and opportunities as their

US and Canadian counterparts, at 1/3 the cost of traditional medical schools. Saint James School of Medicine was founded in 2001 by a consortium of medical educators and physicians from universities and colleges in the United States and Europe. Saint James School of Medicine is the perfect choice for motivated, focused, and passionate students seeking a personalized medical education. Students spend 20 months studying Basic Sciences at one of their campuses on two beautiful Caribbean islands, Anguilla and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The curriculum is modeled on the United States Licensure Exam (USMLE) format and both campuses boast a student-teacher ratio as low as 6:1, allowing for ample personal attention and guidance from professors. Speaking of licensing exams, SJSM offers a USMLE Step 1

pass guarantee, assuring students that their hard work will pay off. After completion of the Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences follows with 48 weeks of core clerkships and 32 weeks of elective clinical rotations carried out at affiliated hospitals in the US. Clinical rotations are guaranteed, and are even carried out side-by-side with students from traditional US medical schools –proving that you don’t need to go into debt to get a quality medical education! SJSM graduates are eligible to practice in the United States and Canada, and our alumni are able to match into competitive residencies like Surgery, Radiology, OBGYN, and Pediatrics. At Saint James School of Medicine, applicants are viewed through a wider lens than that of traditional US medical schools; students are more than just their applications. SJSM takes a holistic look at all applicants, not only their academic records but essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities as well. We are looking for motivated students whose desire to help others through the practice of medicine is their true calling.

See why millions trust us for Home & Auto.

Shah Rukh Khan is in more trouble over the Income Tax Department’s probe into his Alibaug property matter. According to the latest report, the Zero star will not get any respite till December 2018 from the Income Tax department which is currently investigating the case and have alleged that the actor has amassed the property illegally and has named the same ‘benami’. Among many other things, there is an allegation that the property was purchased for agricultural purpose but instead, a luxury bungalow was constructed over it. The property dispute has now reached New Delhi and there will be a hearing with both parties before giving an order in this matter. It is reported that the authority will pass the order in one year from the date of provisional attachment order. Also, it is also said that the date of hearing and final order depends on the authority’s load of work. While this is true, IT department has stuck to its original claim that the actor’s property falls under Benami Act. For those who don’t know, actor’s Alibaug property is a palatial mansion which is spread over an area of 19,960 sq meters and has state of the art amenities such as a swimming pool, a private helipad, a private football ground and a part of the beach. Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri are regulars there and often entertain guests at the farm house.

Starring: Rajkummar Rao Music By: Ishaan Chhabra Release Date: April 27, 2018 Omerta is a 2017 Indian biographical crime drama film directed by Hansal Mehta and stars Rajkumar Rao in the role of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, British terrorist of Pakistani descent. The film explores the 1994 kidnappings of Westerners in India for which Omar was arrested and served time in prison and the plotting of murder of Wall Street journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002. It was screened in the special presentations section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, the Mumbai Film Festival, Florence Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. Omerta is scheduled to release on April 20, 2018. The story of Omerta was suggested to director Hansal Mehta by actor Mukul Dev in 2005, who marks his debut as a writer. Mehta

said that at the time when Dev told him the story, the internet was “really slow”. So, he had to buy books, material from the archives and magazines for the research. He started developing the script but made Shahid (2012) with Rajkummar Rao instead, as he felt the latter was an “easier film to make”. He credits Rao being a reason Omerta was made. “I had to meet Rajkummar and because I met him, he became an enabler and because of him, I could make this film. Mehta stated that his intention behind making Omerta was to explore evil as a “human characteristic”. He further said that he wanted to leave the audience with a sense of “awe, disgust, hate, surprise” and to examine the “ramifications of these terror events on their lives today.” Mehta called the villain of the film, Omar Sheikh, the “hannibal” of terrorism who could be planning how to outwit you even while talking to you.” Mehta further told that the film “exposes state-sponsored terrorism and how it manipulates young minds into believing a sordid interpretation of Jihad.” The film was shot in real locations across London and India, while the scenes of Afghanistan and Pakistan were recreated. Mehta, along with his crew, visited some of the places that Ahmed Sheikh had visited. Mehta said that the film does not shows the backstory of Sheikh and how he became a terrorist: “It is an uncomfortable film which will raise uncomfortable questions and answers that we have to compel

MOVIE REVIEW October Banner: Rising Sun Films Kino Works Producer: Ronnie Lahiri Sheel Kumar Director: Shoojit Sircar Starring: Varun Dhawan Banita Sandhu Gitanjali Rao Music By: Shantanu Moitra Released Date: April 13, 2018 Almost every other film made in Bollywood is a love story or has some element of romance. Hence, it is a genre that has been extremely beaten to death. Making a film on love that is novel and unconventional can be quite a difficult and even a risk, since the audiences might not accept something that they are not habituated too. Yet, Shoojit Sircar takes the risk with October, which promises to be a ‘hatke’ love story. Moreover, Varun Dhawan, who has not had a flop film in his career and known for his massy films, features in this film in the lead role. So does OCTOBER manage to entertain and impress? Or does the risk fail to pay off? Let’s analyse October is the story of an unconventional bond shared by two people in an extraordinary circumstance. Danish Walia aka Dan (Varun Dhawan) works in a five-star hotel in Delhi. He is arrogant and often argues with his seniors and even the guests. Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) also works there and both are friends but aren’t that close. On the eve of New Year, the hotel staffers decide to have their own little party at the rooftop of the hotel, situated on the 3rd floor. Shiuli attempts to sit on the parapet and

she slips and falls down on the ground. She is immediately hospitalized and slips into coma. Shiuli’s colleagues, including Dan, pay her a visit and in a few days, they move on. But Dan is unable to do so and few weeks later, he learns from his colleague that Shiuli’s last sentence before slipping was ‘Where is Dan’. As soon as Dan comes to know about this information, he gets even more obsessed. He regularly starts paying Shiuli a visit at the hospital and even gets introduced to her mother, Professor Vidya Nair (Gitanjali Rao) and her siblings. Shiuli’s uncle meanwhile makes it clear to Vidya that there’s not much hope when it comes to improvement in Shiuli’s health and that she should pull the plug. But Dan motivates Vidya not to do so. What happens next forms the rest of the film. Juhi Chaturvedi’s story rests on a wafer-thin plot and is too arthouse. Her screenplay is not quite engaging as well as it moves at a slow pace. The movie is devoid of love story and romance however there are moments which indicate that it is a love story. One has certain expectations from her since she’s written some very interesting films like Vicky Donor [2012], Madras Cafe [2013] and Piku [2015], all also directed by Shoojit Sircar. But her work in October is a far cry from her previous films. Also one gets a déjà vu of the character of Anand bhai in Munnabhai MBBS [2003] and the recent much loved Hollywood film The Big Sick [2017]. But again, October is nowhere close to both these movies. Even with the screenplay, she struggles. Juhi Chaturvedi’s dialogues however are quite interesting. Shoojit Sircar’s direction too is a bit shaky. It’s surprising to see such a film made by a prolific director having abrupt cuts, sudden fade out etc. A few sequences might be difficult for viewers to comprehend. For

instance, the scene where Dan informs Shiuli where he was on that fateful night. The slow pace moreover tests the viewers patience. Thankfully, in the second half, when the film becomes a bit simple, the film has lovely scenes. But overall, a very miniscule section of audience is going to give the film thumbs up! The opening sequence of October is beautiful. The opening credits are surprising as Banita Sandhu is mentioned followed by Geetanjali Rao and only then Varun Dhawan’s name appears on the screen! The workings of the five-star hotel are very nicely depicted and Dan’s entry is quite simple but gives an idea about his bizarre traits. The sequence where Shiuli falls from the rooftop is presented in a very matter-

of-fact way, sans any drama. In a way, it adds a lot to the impact. But sadly from here on, there’s hardly any movement in the story. Even in the second half, not much happens but few moments are nice and touching. The climax is very emotional but these are too little and appear too late in the day. On the whole, October is an offbeat and a sensitive film which rests on a wafer thin plot and suffers from a slow pace. The movie is sure to win critical acclaim for Varun Dhawan’s outstanding performance but has hardly anything for the masses. At the box office, the movie will appeal to a niche section of the multiplex going audience. Rating:

Bollywood celebrities on Monday assembled to protest against the brutal rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in January in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. However, many on social media are angry with these celebrities for displaying selective outrage. Here are the reactions. In a rare display of unity, Bollywood celebrities on Monday joined Mumbaikars to outrage and protest against the rape and murder of an 8-yearold girl in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir. According to the police chargesheet, a child from a minority nomadic community was held captive in a small village temple in Kathua district for a week in January during which she was sedated, sexually assaulted and bludgeoned to death by eight men. Previously, in protest against the incident, various Bollywood celebrities had shared pictures of themselves holding placards that read… “I am Hindustan. I am Ashamed. 8 years old. Gangraped. Murdered in ‘devi’ sthaan temple.” While many on social media lauded these celebrities for voicing their opinions collectively, others slammed them for ‘selective outrage’. Alluding to the recent Nagoan rape case in Assam, actress Koena Mitra tweeted out to Sonam Kapoor saying, “Any comments @sonamakapoor? You condemded a heinous crime (I appreciate) but gave it a communal twist "Fake Hindus" .

Facebook CEO’s compensation jumps to $8.9 mln Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s compensation rose 53.5 percent to $8.9 million in 2017, a regulatory filing showed last Friday, largely due to higher costs related to the 33-year old billionaire’s personal security. About 83 percent of the compensation represented securityrelated expenses, while most of the rest were tied to Zuckerberg’s personal usage of private aircraft. Zuckerberg spent much of last year travelling after he pledged to visit all the U.S. states that he had not previously been to. His security expenses climbed to $7.3 million in 2017 from $4.9 million a year earlier.

Tata Group unlikely to bid for Air India India’s steel-to-autos conglomerate Tata Group, widely seen as a potential suitor for Air India, is unlikely to consider a bid for the state-run carrier as the government’s terms are just too onerous. India, keen to sell the loss-making, debt-ridden airline, finalised plans in late March to divest a 76 percent stake and offload about $5.1 billion of its debt. A lack of interest from Tata is likely to put pressure on the government to rethink its terms or even the structure of the sale. “The deal structure needs serious corrections,” said Amber Dubey, partner and India head of aerospace and defence at consultancy KPMG. He said the main challenges are the debt, the government’s residual 24 percent stake and the workforce, adding that the government should consult with potential bidders and simplify the terms.

India and Sweden agree to strengthen cooperation on defence

STOCKHOLM - Sweden and India will strengthen their cooperation on defence, their prime ministers said on Tuesday, a move that could aid Sweden’s Saab in its bid to sell its Gripen jet to replace India’s Soviet-era MiG fighters. Last week, India issued a request for information for 110 combat jets for the air force, marking the first step toward a long-delayed deal that could be worth more than $15 billion. “Sweden and India have agreed to work towards a security agreement allowing us to exchange certain types of classified information required to work together on defence materials,” Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told reporters after meeting his Indian counterpart in Stockholm. “This agreement would be an

important step forward to deepen our bilateral cooperation in the defence domain.” Lockheed Martin, Saab and Dassault Aviation are among the manufacturers expected to compete for India’s fighter order. The planes must be largely built locally as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s make-in-India drive to build a domestic industrial base. “In the area of defence, Sweden has been a partner of India for a very long time and I am sure that in the future as well, we will find more opportunities for cooperation, in particular in the area of defence production,” Modi told reporters. Saab had agreed to work with India’s Adani Group in a bid to sell single-engine planes to the air force, but India has since widened the brief to both single and twin-engined planes.

The two countries also agreed to cooperate on renewable en-

Uber doubling down on India investments after exiting Southeast Asia NEW DELHI - Ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies Inc is “doubling down” on its investments in India, one of its biggest markets, after its recent exit from Southeast Asia, its chief operating officer said on Wednesday. India accounts for more than 10 percent of Uber rides globally and the U.S. company has a more than 35 percent share of the taxi market there, according to Counterpoint Research, but it is yet to make money in the country. COO Barney Harford said investments in India are made using funds from profitable markets. However, the sale in March of Uber’s business in Southeast Asia to Singapore’s Grab Holdings, in exchange for a 27.5 percent stake, has given Uber more firepower to

compete with its Indian rival Ola. “The recent merger ... has freed up resources which we are going to invest across people, products and partnerships to better serve this country,” Harford told reporters in New Delhi. “We are doubling down on our investments in this country like never before,” he said, adding that India was a core market for the San Francisco-based company. Harford did not say how much Uber is likely to invest in India but said it would “considerably expand” its technology resources to develop products for India and the world. Uber’s India head Amit Jain said the company has no major plans to expand to more cities in India.

Uber operates in about 30 Indian cities while Ola is in 110 cities and has more than a 45 percent total market share, according to Counterpoint Research. Uber and Ola are backed by a common investor, SoftBank Group, which pushed behind the scenes for the merger between Uber and Grab. It is not clear

whether the Japanese investor plans to spur consolidation in India as well. Executives from Uber and Ola met at least twice over the past 12 months and, among other things, Uber brought up a potential merger between the two companies with Uber in the driver’s seat, sources have told Reuters.

India’s Coinsecure exchange says $3 million worth of bitcoins stolen NEW DELHI - Coinsecure, an Indian cryptocurrency exchange, said nearly $3 million were stolen from its bitcoin wallet, the biggest reported so far in the country’s fledgling virtual currency market. The theft is expected to further weaken trade in cryptocurrencies, which the government has likened to “Ponzi schemes” that offer unusually high returns to early investors. Coinsecure, which has over 200,000 users trading on its platform daily, said that around

438 bitcoins, which were stored in a password-protected virtual wallet were siphoned off to an unknown destination on the internet after the details were leaked online. “We regret to inform you that our bitcoin funds have been exposed and seem to have been siphoned out to an address that is outside our control,” the company said in a statement posted on its website. Legal experts said there was a need to regulate the virtual currency market, instead of imposing restrictions on its trade. “It is for reasons like these

that there is a need to regulate crypto-exchanges,” said Anirudh Rastogi, founder and managing partner at TRA Law, a firm that specializes in emerging-technology businesses. “Pushing the exchange business out from the formal economy to the informal cash economy to operate under the radar will worsen the problem, not solve it,” Rastogi said. Coinsecure said it would compensate customers for losses from its existing funds. Bitcoins in India were trading at 480,000 Indian rupees, or about $7,359 last Friday,

India’s CBI probing Surya Pharmaceuticals in $95 million bank fraud case NEW DELHI - Indian police have launched an investigation into a Delhi-based pharmaceutical company for allegedly defrauding state-run Punjab & Sind Bank and four other banks of 6.21 billion rupees ($94.57 million), police said. “Investigation is continuing,” Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the federal police, said in a statement on Tuesday. The CBI

said the searches were conducted at seven locations and recovered some documents. The police acted following a complaint from the Punjab & Sind Bank against Surya Pharmaceuticals, its two promoters and a Dubai-based company, alleging they had defrauded the banks and siphoned off funds through group companies, a police report reviewed by Reuters showed.

Reuters’ attempts to contact officials of Surya Pharmaceuticals and Punjab & Sind Bank officials through phone and email outside office hours remained unanswered. The finance ministry had earlier asked all banks to step up vigilance following a $2 billion fraud in February at India’s secondbiggest state-run lender Punjab National Bank.

according to cryptocurrency exchange Coinome, well below its international market price of about $7,771. The Reserve Bank of India has already dealt a blow to the crytocurrency exchanges, barring banks from facilitating trade on virtual currencies and mandating them to unwind their existing relationship with exchanges

within three months. Elsewhere in Asia, Vietnam and South Korea have also suffered millions of dollars worth of fraud and embezzlement in some of the cryptocurrency businesses. Earlier this year, one of Japan’s cryptocurrency exchanges was hit by a daring $530 million theft of digital money.

No one, not even her teammates, expected such a stunning show from the 22-yearold but the Delhi girl was in her own zone, beating higher-ranked rivals from Singapore twice during the course of the Games. Seema Punia was expected to win the silver and she did just that, but no one thought Jinson Johnson would trouble the Africans in the men’s 1500m final. Johnson ran the race of his life to better the national record set

by Bahadur Prasad way back in 1995. “For me, this was the best I could manage but for many others in the field, including world and Olympic medallists, it was a winning race. So they just had to alter the pace according to the competition whereas I had to give my personal best to be with them,” Johnson said. Punia, ever a companion of controversy - the latest was her trip to Russia to train ahead of the Games - asked why the media should be concerned with her training venues. “I gave you the medal, what more you want,” she countered.

GOLD COAST - The XXI Commonwealth Games was an aberration for India in the sense that the hockey players, both men and women, returned empty handed after having promised so much. With the spotlight away from them, the focus shifted to the likes of paddler Manika Batra from Delhi, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra from Haryana and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who all led from the front to ensure that India’s national anthem was played 26 times, across seven venues, from the Belmont Shooting range in Brisbane to the Oxenford studios which hosted table tennis, squash and boxing. The rarity of his achievement ensures that the ‘best Indian male athlete award’ of the Games should go to javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra. On his way to gold, Chopra silenced the home crowd, which was rooting for veteran Australian Hamish Peacock. Competing in the hostile, packed cauldron of the Carrara Stadium would have been a tough initiation for Chopra, who proved he was made of sterner stuff, coming up with a series of massive throws that took the gold away

Commonwealth Games 2018 gave India a new breed of heroes

Gold medallist MC Mery Kom of India, silver medallist Kristina O’Hara of Northern Ireland, and bronze medallists Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwakku of Sri Lanka and Tasmyn Benny of New Zealand.

Shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Srikanth Kidambi are already world beaters and so their role in India winning the team medal was more less expected, though Srikanth, the new world No. 1, failed to assert his supremacy in the singles final. In boxing, Mary Kom had little challenge and this was one of her easiest climbs to the top of the podium. Vikas Krishan, who was at pains to explain his pressure to win, added one more medal that will now sit alongside his Asian Games gold, a rare combo. India’s young shooters stole

the limelight, setting the range on fire, but few veterans stood their ground and took the gold. Heena Sidhu, after losing to Manu Bhaker in the 10m, took the 25m gold while Tejaswini, the 2010 World Champion, won a gold and a silver. The weightlifters won a bag full of medals but the tone for the golden run was set by Mirabai Chanu, who set a new Games record in women’s 48kg. The celebrated wrestlers were not to be left behind and powered by Sushil Kumar and Vinesh Phogat they collected a total of 12 medals, including five gold.

When heart disease runs in the family, exercise tied to lower risk BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL 1. Hair Care: Do you know the reason for long and shining hair of women in tropical coastal regions? Yes, it is coconut oil. Women in tropical coastal regions of the world use this oil for their hair almost daily. This thick butter-like oil helps in a healthy growth of your hair and gives a shine to those strands. 2. Skin Care: Coconut oil is an excellent massage oil that acts as an effective moisturizer for all types of skin, including dry skin. Unlike mineral oil, there is no chance of having any adverse side effects on the skin from the application of this oil. Therefore, it has been safely used for thousands of years for preventing dryness and flaking of skin. 3. Weight Loss: Coconut oil is useful for weight loss too. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It helps reduce abdominal obesity in women. It is also easy to digest as compared to other edible oils. 4. Improves Immunity: Coconut oil is also good for improving your immunity. It strengthens the immune system because it contains antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid, which have antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. 5. Dental Care: Calcium is an important component of our teeth. Since coconut oil facilitates the absorption of calcium by the body, it helps in developing strong teeth. It also stops tooth decay. It is also beneficial in reducing plaque formation and plaque-induced gingivitis.

By Lisa Rapaport People who get plenty of exercise are less likely to have heart attacks and strokes than their inactive counterparts, even when they have a genetic predisposition for heart disease, a U.K. study suggests. Among roughly half a million people in the UK, those with greater grip strength, more physical activity and better cardiovascular fitness had a lower risk of heart disease - even when heart attacks or strokes ran in the family, researchers found. “Even if you are at a high genetic risk, you can improve your chances of remaining in good cardiovascular health by doing exercise,” said senior study author Erik Ingelsson, a researcher at Stanford University School of Medicine in California. For example, among people in the study with an intermediate genetic risk for cardiovascular diseases, individuals with the strongest grips were 36 percent less likely to develop coronary heart disease and had 46 percent lower odds of developing atrial fibrillation than people

with the weakest grip strength, researcher report in Circulation. And among people with a high genetic risk for cardiovascular diseases, those with the best cardiorespiratory fitness had a 49 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease compared to participants with the poorest cardiorespiratory fitness. They also had a 60 percent lower risk of atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm problem that predisposes people to strokes. Participants in the study didn’t have heart disease when they enrolled in the research project. They ranged in age from 40 to 69. Half of them stayed in the study for more than six years.

Overall, they experienced 20,914 cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Researchers used a physical activity questionnaire to assess how much exercise people got. They also did treadmill tests to assess fitness, hand-held tools to test grip strength, and collected genetic data on most of the participants. Exercise appeared linked to a lower risk of heart problems even after researchers accounted for factors like age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, diabetes, smoking, blood pressure, obesity and use of medicines to lower cholesterol.

Air quality linked to cardiac ‘events,’ heart disease patients unaware By Carolyn Crist Poor air quality with high levels of tiny pollution particles known as PM 2.5 are tied to a spike in emergency department visits for heart- and lung-related illnesses and stroke, a California study suggests, but a nationwide U.S. survey finds that few heart patients are aware of air quality risks. Based on analysis of areas affected by the intense 2015 California wildfire season, researchers found that within a day of residents being exposed to dense smoke, emergency room visits for heart attacks and other cardiac events and symptoms rose by 15 percent overall, and 42 percent among people over age 65.

Stroke and other cerebrovascular emergencies rose 17 percent overall, and 22 percent for older adults, the study team reports in the Journal of the American Heart Association. “Unlike places that have chronic exposure to poor air quality where we can educate people about the health risks, wildfires happen at unexpected times,” said senior study author Ana Rappold of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab in Durham, North Carolina. “Wildfires have become a leading cause of short-term exposure to polluted air,” she said in a telephone interview. “It’s important to talk to people about how expo-

sure to wildfire can impact their health.” Large-scale wildfires are projected to increase through the end of the century in many areas, particularly in California, Rappold and her colleagues note in their report. Wildfire smoke contains several pollutants, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and ash particles that have been associated with lung and heart problems. It also contains tiny particles, smaller than 2.5 micrometers, that are produced by burning, such as in wildfires, indoor cooking fires and motor vehicle exhaust. These particles are small enough to enter the bloodstream from the lungs and are linked to inflammation, heart rhythm disturbances

Painkiller overuse spikes during cold and flu season

A growing number of people are taking high doses of the painkiller acetaminophen, and many take so much during cold and flu season that they run the risk of liver and kidney damage, two studies suggest.

By Lisa Rapaport A growing number of people are taking high doses of the painkiller acetaminophen, and many take so much during cold and flu season that they run the risk of liver and kidney damage, two studies suggest. Throughout the year, 6.3 percent of acetaminophen users take more than the maximum recommended daily dose at least one day during weeks when they use the drug, one study of 14,481 U.S. adults found. During cold and flu season, however, people were 24 percent more likely to exceed the maximum recommended dose of 4,000 milligrams at least once a week. Acetaminophen, sold as paracetamol in Europe, can ease a fever, but many people may take too much of the painkiller out of a mistaken belief that it will also cure the flu, said Dr. Liffert Vogt, a researcher at the University of Amsterdam Academic Medical Center in the Netherlands who wasn’t involved in the study. “I would not recommend taking acetaminophen for cold and flu symptoms,” Vogt said by email. “Taking a cup of soup will be much more efficacious than taking a pill.”

In the U.S. study, the proportion of people taking too much acetaminophen wasn’t large - 6.5 percent during cold and flu season compared with 5.3 percent at other times of year. But because millions of adults use the drug, the increase during cold and flu season adds up to a large added risk in the general population, the authors note. Taking too much acetaminophen (Tylenol) is associated with liver and kidney damage, especially at high doses and with long-term use, Vogt said. While the risk of these complications is lower with acetaminophen than with other painkillers like ibuprofen (Motrin) or nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (NSAIDs) like Aleve, all of these painkillers can cause problems when people take too much. Patients need to read labels carefully to make sure all of the different remedies they try to ease cold and flu symptoms don’t contain more than the maximum recommended doses of acetaminophen or other painkillers. “Getting this message out is especially important during cold and flu season, when people may be more likely to treat symptoms with acetaminophen combination products, sometimes without even

realizing they contain acetaminophen,” lead study author Dr. Saul Shiffman of Pinney Associates and the University of Pittsburgh said in a statement. The problem of acetaminophen overuse isn’t limited to the U.S.; a second study examining painkiller use in France from 2006 to 2015 found that country to be the top user of acetaminophen in Europe. France also ranked third for use of mild opioids, researchers found. During the study period, use of acetaminophen surged 53 percent in France. Thousand-milligram tablets of acetaminophen have been the most commonly used drug among adults there since 2008. While use of these high-dose pills more than doubled during the 10-year study period, use of 500-milligram tablets declined by 20 percent. Both studies were published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Neither study examined rates of health problems associated with taking too much acetaminophen, nor why usage goes up seasonally or over time. Another limitation of the studies is that researchers couldn’t distinguish medically necessary usage from potential substance use problems or accidental overuse. “This extensive analgesics consumption that we have documented raises the concern of overuse and misuse, as well as addiction to opioids,” said the lead author of the French study, Karima Hider-Mlynarz of the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety in Saint-Denis. “Even it is prescribed and widespread used, none of the analgesic drugs are harmless and the dose must always be respected,” Hider-Mlynarz said by email.

and clotting issues, the authors write. Rappold and colleagues analyzed emergency room visits between May 1 and September 30, 2015 in eight northern and central California basins where fires covered more than 800,000 acres of land. Based on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the research team followed smoke plumes and particulate matter concentrations as they moved across the state. They also looked at emergency room data for diagnoses such as heart attack, angina, cardiac dysrhythmia, pulmonary embolism, stroke, asthma, COPD and pneumonia. The researchers found 361,000 cardiovascular, 15,500 cerebrovascular and 230,000 respiratory diagnoses. Emergency room visits for heart issues were associated with wildfire smoke density for all adults and were more pronounced for those over age 65. Brain and lung issues were also more severe among older adults, especially on medium- and dense-smoke days. “We have an aging population in this country with increasing obesity, diabetes and associated heart and lung diseases, and we have an increasing number of acres that burn every year,” said one of the study’s coauthors, Dr. Wayne Cascio, who directs the EPA National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab. “We also have an increasing number of people encroaching on acres that have a high likelihood of burning,” Cascio said in a telephone interview. “That’s the perfect storm of increasing the number of people who are at risk for wildfire exposure.” In future studies, the EPA team plans to look at how long wildfire smoke and particulate matter lingers in the air and causes health problems, as well as how these air pollution exposures affect healthcare expenses through programs such as Medicare.

They’ve also launched Smoke Sense (bit.ly/2gFdHTV), a mobile app that encourages people to submit information about wildfire exposures and their health and productivity. “I tell my patients that if they have heart or lung disease, they need to be mindful about poor air quality and smoke from wildfires,” Cascio said. “Avoid them to the extent that you can and look at EPA resources or others to plan what else you should do.” In a separate study by a team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, researchers found that people with lung disease are more likely than those with heart diseases to be aware of the risks they face during poor air quality alerts. The research team analyzed surveys of more than 12,000 U.S. adults between 2014 and 2016. About half of participants were aware of air quality alerts, 27 percent said they avoided busy roads to reduce their exposure and 3 percent said they had talked with a health professional about ways to avoid exposure to air pollution. Compared to the other survey participants, awareness of air quality alerts was 11 percent more common among people with asthma and avoidance of busy roads was 13 percent more common. People with asthma were also five times more likely to have spoken with a doctor about avoiding pollution exposure. “Targeted public health messages about air quality might raise awareness about alerts and motivate changes in behavior among those at risk during periods of unhealthy air quality,” said lead study author Maria Mirabelli of the CDC’s Asthma and Community Health Branch. “Be aware of air quality alerts and discuss with a health professional the strategies to reduce air pollution exposure,” Mirabelli advised in an email. “Avoid busy roads to reduce exposure when walking, biking or exercising outdoors.”

U.S. recalls more than 200 million eggs over salmonella fears Nearly 207 million eggs from a farm in North Carolina are being recalled from nine U.S. states after 22 people fell ill, the federal Food and Drug Administration has said. It is the largest recall of eggs in the United States since 2010, the Food Safety News website reported. The eggs may have been contaminated with salmonella braenderup, an organism which can

cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems, the FDA said on Friday in a statement. The eggs were recalled by producer Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana “through an abundance of caution,” the FDA’s statement said. The eggs were distributed from a farm in Hyde County, North

Fiery pepper causes ‘thunderclap’ headache

Eating super-hot chili peppers can have painful effects that extend beyond a blazing mouth, doctors warn.

By Anne Harding Eating super-hot chili peppers can have painful effects that extend beyond a blazing mouth, doctors warn. After downing a “Carolina Reaper,” billed as the world’s hottest chili pepper at the time, a 34-year-old man developed intense head and neck pain and had several brief but excruciating headaches over the next few days. Known as “thunderclap headaches,” these episodes are a medical emergency, because they can signal bleeding in the brain, a clot shutting down brain blood flow, or other life-threatening conditions. Fortunately for the man, the pain came from so-called reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS), a temporary narrowing of the vessels that supply the brain with blood. RCVS usually does not have long-term ill effects but can sometimes lead to stroke. Certain substances - including capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers - can trigger blood vessel constriction, Dr. Kulothungan Gunasekaran, a senior staff physician at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit and one of the doctors who took care of this patient, told Reuters Health in a telephone interview. He noted that other teams have already reported two cases of heart attack apparently due to capsaicin, one in a patient taking cayenne pepper capsules for weight loss and another in a patient using a capsaicin patch to

treat pain. In a report released April 9 by the publishers of BMJ Case Reports, Gunasekaran and colleagues describe how the patient had started having dry heaves after competing in a hot pepper contest. Over the next few days he suffered thunderclap headaches, with excruciating pain that eventually sent him to the emergency room. Tests showed no sign of stroke or any other deadly headache causes, and the man’s blood pressure was normal. CT angiography, which allows doctors to visualize blood vessels, showed narrowing of four arteries delivering blood to the brain, suggesting RCVS. Repeat CT angiography five weeks later found the man’s arteries had returned to normal. “People should be cautious about the effects of hot peppers,” Gunasekaran said. “If they do develop these symptoms, they should seek medical attention.” Dr. Aneesh Singhal of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was the first to describe RCVS, in 2001, in a patient who developed thunderclap headaches after eating red hot peppers. While about one-third of patients with RCVS will have complications such as bleeding in the brain, Dr. Singhal noted, “more than 90% of patients have an excellent outcome.” It’s crucial that thunderclap headaches not be mistaken for migraine, because migraine drugs can make RCVS worse, he told Reuters Health in a telephone interview.

Carolina, which, Food Safety News said, produces 2.3 million eggs per day from 3 million laying hens. The eggs reached consumers in Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Nearly 207 million eggs from a farm in North Carolina are being recalled from nine U.S. states after 22 people fell ill.

Fish oil supplements ineffective against dry eye Fish oil supplements do not ease the symptoms of dry eye, a condition that affects about one in seven U.S. adults, according to a new test of the treatment in hundreds of volunteers. People who took 3,000 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids each day for 12 months - the highest dose ever used in a trial of fish oil - experienced no more relief from their dry eye than a second group that received olive oil placebo capsules. The findings were published online by the New England Journal of Medicine and reported at

the annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Washington, D.C. Dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is estimated to cost the U.S. economy more than $55 billion a year in medical care and lost productivity as people struggle to cope with the pain, itchiness, burning, fatigue and vision problems that occur when the surface of the eye becomes too dessicated. The result “contradicts a popular and common treatment of dry eye disease as the study did not

find any significantly better outcomes of patients treated with omega-3 fatty acids,” said Kang, who was not involved in the research. Other treatments doctors may recommend include over-thecounter lubricating eye drops, eyelid-cleansing regimens, tear duct plugs to slow the drainage of the eye’s natural lubricant and two prescription drugs, including the widely-advertised Restasis prescription drops that cost more than $500 a month. The other prescription drop, Xiidra, carries a similar price tag.

Older adults may not need vitamin D to prevent falls and fractures By Lisa Rapaport Many older adults should avoid taking vitamin D and calcium supplements to prevent falls and fractures, and focus instead on exercises to improve balance and coordination, U.S. doctors recommend. The conclusion issued Tuesday by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) on fall and fracture prevention comes amid growing debate in the medical community over the role of vitamin D, which may help some people at lower doses but is linked to an increased risk of fractures, falls, kidney stones and certain cancers at higher doses. “Vitamin D should not be taken to prevent falls in older adults, and lower doses of vitamin D and calcium do not prevent fractures in postmenopausal women,” said Task Force vice chair Dr. Alex Krist, of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. “If healthy people are taking vitamin D solely for these reasons, they should probably stop,” Krist said by email. “We know that there are more effective interventions for people concerned about falls, like exercise.” Vitamin D helps the body use calcium to support bone health.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin D for most adults is 600 international units, or 800 IU after age 70. Some people take vitamin D because it isn’t in many foods, though it can be found in beef liver, canned salmon or sardines, cheese and egg yolks as well as fortified milk and orange juice. Most milk sold in the U.S., for example, contains 100 IU of vitamin D per cup. Getting vitamin D and calcium from foods has been linked to a reduced risk of decreased bone density, known as osteoporosis, that can contribute to falls and fractures among older adults.

But there isn’t yet enough evidence to determine the benefits and harms of taking vitamin D or calcium supplements to prevent fractures in men or women who haven’t gone through menopause, the Task Force concludes. After menopause, when decreased supplies of the hormone estrogen may increase the risk of osteoporosis, the Task Force recommends against lower doses of vitamin D and calcium to prevent fractures. There isn’t enough evidence yet to determine the advantages or harms of high doses for postmenopausal women.

ASTROLOGY

WEEKLY HOROSCOPE (April 29 - May 5, 2018)

Aries (March 21 to April 20) The week could see you becoming less idealistic and more down to earth, particularly when it comes to your career, money matters, and security. As Saturn and Pluto rewind at the top of your chart, you could focus even more deeply on a goal or plan that you’re eager to accomplish. Taurus (April 21 to May 21) The week begins on an indulgent note that can be perfect for a romantic date or meal with friends. Whatever you do, it should be very enjoyable. You will come into your own this week as the sun dances into your sign, enhancing your vitality. Gemini (May 22 to June 21) Progress may be slow, but eventually success could be yours. Midweek, an unexpected invitation could offer a fun evening out. As the sun moves into Taurus, a more secluded sector of your chart, you’ll enter a phase in which you might want to avoid too much socializing. Cancer (June 22 to July 22) Your friendships and social life can make the start of the week very enjoyable. However, you could find Tuesday more intense as a link between lovely Venus and potent Pluto sees you becoming quite attached to someone or something. It’s time to unwind and have some fun. Leo (July 23 to August 22) The week ahead looks very promising for collaborating on a long-term project. Even though results may be slow in coming, success can be yours with perseverance. Getting out of your own way can make it easier to obtain what you want. Virgo (August 23 to September 23) The start of the week could be most enjoyable, offering you a chance to connect with someone who is excellent company. This upbeat start to the week can boost your spirits and leave you with an energy high. You could get a surprise in the form of an unexpected small windfall or gift, so look out for that. Libra (September 24 to October 23) When lovely Venus ties with expansive Jupiter, someone might want to reward you for your kindness and present you with a gift or cash. You might need to let go of certain things, and while it may be difficult, it could also be a relief. Scorpio (October 24 to November 22) A relationship could move to a new and more positive level and it could seem like the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for. In addition, this can be the perfect time for a special date or a meal with a friend that presents you with new opportunities. Sagittarius (November 23 to December 21) Spiritual insight and wisdom can bring powerful guidance your way. This could help you make a decision that you may have put off for some time. A strong focus on your sector of values could find you becoming more focused on the material side of life. Capricorn (December 22 to January 20) If you’ve been busy with various matters, the weeks ahead can bring a pleasant respite. You now have an opportunity to indulge your senses and enjoy yourself to the max. Think luxurious massages with scented oils, walks in the countryside. Aquarius (January 21 to February 19) You might be tempted to give in to a desire to stay home rather than go to work or finish your tasks. This might be something you should schedule in because it’s important to get the rest you need but perhaps not right at the start of the week. Pisces (February 20 to March 20) A warm conversation or a chance to reconnect with someone can make the start of the week very special and upbeat. After a lively few weeks, the next few could be calmer and perhaps easier to handle.

ADVERTORIAL

Nalanda Estates reaches more milestones Nalanda Estates, the upscale, gated community in Parrish, Florida, has announced several new milestones: the Grand Opening of the Clubhouse is scheduled for May 1, the first residents of the community completed the closings of their homes and began to move in, and more site amenities have been added. Parrish, Florida is a rapidly developing area located between Tampa and Sarasota near Florida’s Gulf Coast. Some of the best beaches in the world are just a short drive from the community, including the St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Anna Maria Island beaches. Three area airports offer flights from around the country: Tampa International Airport (TPA), St. Pete – Clearwater International Airport (PIE), and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). Many hospitals, museums, state parks, and shopping facilities are located nearby. The centerpiece of the community is a stunning 7,000 square foot clubhouse which will be opening its doors at the beginning of May. The clubhouse features a full commercial kitchen capable of providing food service for all residents, a banquet hall that seats 170 people, fitness center, theater for Bollywood and international movies, cards room, and a wine/snack bar. The clubhouse will organize a variety of activities for residents, including movie showings, potlucks, day trips to area attractions, yoga classes, and many more activities. The opening of the clubhouse is the marquee event in the development of Nalanda Estates. According to Mr. Khilnani, “The goal of Nalanda Estates is to be a true community, and the clubhouse is the essential component. This is where residents will meet and get to know each other and develop lasting friendships.” To celebrate the grand opening of the clubhouse, Nalanda Estates is offering a significant incentive package for a limited time, including $15,000 to $25,000 discounts on select homes and lots, and reimbursements for up to $5,000 in closing costs. And if you sign a contract during April or May, Nalanda Estates will also reimburse up to $1,000 in airline and hotel expenses! Additional site amenities have been recently completed as well. An outdoor exercise center has been built, featuring a variety of easy-to-use fitness equipment. “We will also offer an indoor

fitness center in the clubhouse,” said Mr. Khilnani, “but the weather in Florida is so beautiful that we wanted to give our residents the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible.” A shell-paved walking trail offers yet another opportunity to enjoy that weather, providing a picturesque path along the perimeter of the community. And a gorgeous metal sculpture designed by a local artist specifically for Nalanda Estates has been installed at the entrance to the clubhouse. More amenities are in progress, including a swimming pool, jacuzzi, fire pit and pickle ball court, all located on the shore of the beautiful lake in the center of the community. The development will contain 83 homes upon completion. Six floor plans are available, ranging from two to four bedrooms. Every plan has a “flex” room as well, that can be utilized as an office, sitting room or even guest bedroom. Two model homes are available for touring. The Manali is a 1,730 square foot paired villa, with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a flex room. The Mussoorie is a 3,240 square foot detached estate home with 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, and a flex room (and a gourmet kitchen that would make hosting family and holiday dinners a delightful experience). The Sales and Design Center is

open for appointments. Visitors get a comprehensive overview of the community and a look at the many finishes and options available for buyers when they design their new homes. Unlike most other communities, homes at Nalanda Estates include a variety of premium finishes at no additional cost, such as SpanishColonial style tile roofs, a variety of exterior paint schemes, brick paved driveways and lanais, tile flooring, quartz or granite countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, 42” Timberlake® maple wood cabinets, a stainless steel Whirpool® appliance package, and LED recessed can lighting. Each home also comes with a beautifully designed landscape package, which the HOA will maintain for you! Nalanda Estates does not have any age restrictions. However, it is attracting many active retirees or people near retirement who want to live in a community where they can have fun, yet grow intellectually and contribute to the community at the same time. Several homes have now been completed, and buyers are moving in. “We are so excited to welcome our first residents to the community,” said Mr. Khilnani. “We like to say that Nalanda Estates is a place to redefine your life, and we can’t wait to see our residents do just that!”
