On February 20th, thirty one new members were added to this prestigious national organization at CSCA. The ceremony took place in the Chapel, where parents and other guests gathered to witness this special event. It included charges to the new inductees, special music, and reminders from the present NHS Officers of the ideals that laid the foundation of this chapter. The program concluded with a candle light service, where an oath was taken to clarify the goals of NHS. Membership is based on careful consideration of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. It provides many distinctive opportunities for students to participate in service projects, and develop programs that serve the greater CSCA community such as, the annual Turkey Drop and Christmas Angel outreach where families in the community are helped. This year, members began a mentorship program that will soon be in full throttle. These are some of

the many leadership opportunities NHS members are able pursue. While the students of NHS bid farewell to the seniors in NHS, the current members will continue to build upon the foundation that the seniors have laid. CSCA is proud of this wonderful student-led program and applauds the National Honor Society for its hard work.

The Fiesta Book Fair was a success with over 36,552 minutes read by the CSCA Preschool and Elementary school classes during the Scholastic Book Fair Reading Challenge, easily surpassing our goal of 20,000! The students’ motivation was a classroom contest for a Siesta Pajama Pizza Party. Classes participated in many contests, beginning with the All For Books Coin Challenge, where over $1,700 was raised and each teacher was able to shop and grow their classroom libraries at the book fair. Scholastic matches that challenge money and donates it to Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. and the Kids in Need Foundation – Way to Go Junior Crusaders! Book Fair Gift Certificates were up for grabs as nine students entered the Mini Piñata Contest with their creations representing their favorite books, and students played a tortilla chip guessing game as they browsed the Book Fair. Taco Tuesday Family Night went down in history as record book sales for the day were over $2,000. Over 200 people were served a delicious taco dinner while the amazing Grupo Folklorico Timanati, an extremely colorful and talented Mexican dance group, entertained the crowd until almost 8:30 p.m. A piñata was enjoyed for the kids who were able to stay till the end, and many families shopped that night. As book fair week progressed, shoppers were motivated by a drawing for a Nook e-reader from Barnes & Noble.

The success of the Scholastic Book Fair is not determined by the funds it raises, but by the excitement for reading it generates for the students who are able to tour the fair, make their wish lists, and purchase books that they are excited to actually open and read. As parents, it is our job to encourage reading, whether we read to our children or cuddle next to them with the newspaper or a book, and be the example for them. The benefits of early reading are endless, from bonding with your child to expanding their ability to learn, and Scholastic promotes that if your children read every day, they will lead a better life. The book fair committee so appreciates all the time and talent of the parent and student volunteers, as the book fair would not have been possible without them! On February 4th, students, parents, and teachers filled the chapel at 6:45 pm for a showdown of epic proportions! This showdown wasn’t a physical bout of strength or endurance, but rather of minds and opposing worldviews. Ken Ham, president, CEO, and founder of Answers in Genesis, debated world famous TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy. The debate was well advertised during the weeks leading up to February 4th and it was estimated that over 3 million people tuned in to watch as ABC Nightline’s Dan Harris moderated. Although no clear winner can ever be declared in debates such as these, the CSCA science department believed the experience could teach an invaluable lesson to students: that the Creation/Evolution debate isn’t about science, but about worldview. The debate was intense, but cordial. Bill Nye argued that Creationism hurts science and he picked apart various aspects of the Biblical Creation model. Ken Ham showed examples of how creation scientists can and have made accurate scientific predictions based on the Biblical worldview. He also presented testimonies of qualified scientists who proclaimed that they believe God created everything in 6 literal 24-hour days roughly 6,000 years ago. One of the most powerful testimonies came from Dr. Raymond Damadian who invented the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine. The fact that the inventor of one of the 21st century’s most important medical devices believes in a literal and straightforward reading of Genesis negates Mr. Nye’s accusation that Creationism hurts science. The debate provided students and teachers opportunities for tough questions to be asked and fruitful discussions to be had. It is the hope of the science department that students’ minds were expanded and that their faiths were strengthened. -Mr. Asfour

Balloon Racers Blow Past the Competition!

Mrs. DeBolt’s 8th grade Science class recently completed learning about Newton’s Laws of Motion. They put his 3rd law to the test when they built race cars powered by balloons. Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” As the air is released from the balloon, it powers the car forward. Cars had to be hand-made and wheels had to come from unconventional supplies. Friction, momentum, gravity, and acceleration all had to be taken into account for the cars to operate properly. The students spent days building their race cars and then had a friendly competition. The winners were as follows:

Fastest Car - Cami Anenberg and Savannah Crump 3 meters in 2.11 seconds

Best Looking Car – Nia Downs-Torres and Sarah Ciccone

Farthest Distance Car – Ethan Hochhauser and Jacob Kuyper - 8 meters

JSA Winter Congress 2014 in Washington D.C. th

On February 12 , students in our Junior Statesmen of America (JSA) club went to Washington D.C. for the JSA Winter Congress. The first few days of the trip were full of sightseeing to museums like the Smithsonian Museums, the National Archives, the Capitol Building, the Holocaust Museum, a Moonlight Monument Tour, and a treat at DC Cupcakes. On Thursday morning, the JSA members awoke to 11 inches of snow! The government was shut down. Our appointment with Senator Marco Rubio was cancelled, but, we had a fun day playing in the snow. On Friday night, the debate activities began. The JSA Winter Congress is a prototype of how our government ought to work. There is a simulated congress with both the House and Senate where students debate on current issues in America. Our very own JSA President, Nathan Yerby, chaired (supervised) his Houses’ debates. Other students like Justine Roig, Guillaume Foglia, and Anna Park debated on issues like abortion and the legalization of marijuana. Justine Roig won a Best Speaker Award for her debate to outlaw late term abortions. She was selected by her peers as one of the top 16 debaters out of over 500 students there. Anna Park also declared that she would be running for Governor of the Southeast State of JSA and the election will be held at this year’s Spring State Convention, in Orlando, on April 12th-13th. -Nick Slupecki, Junior at CSCA/JSA Historian

Community Helpers

Our Preschool has been blessed with many loving community helpers. We kicked off the week with a very special guest, our kind volunteer and nurse, Sue Brownell. Nurse Sue engaged the children in a wonderful puppet show presentation in which she shared good-health habits with the children. Nurse Sue showed the children a tool and asked them if they knew what the tool was used for. She quickly got a reply from one of the preschoolers, “To listen to your heart beat!” “That’s right! Do you know what it is called?” asked Nurse Sue. Once again, the child replied “a doctorscope!” Nurse Sue ended her presentation by asking the children who lives in their hearts. All the preschoolers eagerly replied “Jesus!!” Tuesday, we had a visit from Mr. O’Neill, our volunteer firefighter. Mr. O’Neill brought a lot of excitement to the room when he entered the classroom in full gear complete with sirens. The preschoolers had the opportunity to “dial” 911 on the phone, practice going to a Meeting Place at the sound of a smoke alarm, and demonstrate the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” procedure. The children received a booklet reviewing Stop, Drop and Roll, as well as a place to plan their family meeting place. Our local dentist’s office, Mini Mouths, visited the preschool on Wednesday. The children were excited to have Mr. Monkey teach them how to properly brush their teeth, as well as the importance of good oral hygiene, and eating healthy foods. Each child received a goody bag with a tooth brush, tooth paste, and hourglass to time themselves.

We ended our week with a visit from Officer James of the Coral Springs Police Department. Officer James taught the children about all the different jobs a police officer does. He showed them how he communicates with his radio, as well as all of his other “tools.” The children all received police badge stickers to wear. Thank you Community Helpers for your giving hearts and time to our littlest Crusaders!

Spelling Bee The ACSI Spelling Bee for First through Fourth grades was held on our campus on February 19, 2014. This year we were blessed to have Mrs. Daley work with our students after school at our weekly at Spelling Club. Thank you Mrs. Daley for your hard work! Spelling Club was designed to help our students excel in the Spelling Bee, and was a huge component to our success. The students worked tirelessly practicing their words, and their diligence was rewarded as we had several students place in the top four for their grade: 1st Grade: 2nd Grade: 4th Grade:

A special graduation ceremony was held for our 5th graders as they completed the GRADE program recently. GRADE stands for Gang Resistance And Drug Education and is sponsored by our Coral Springs Police Department. Officer Lamson made weekly visits to teach our students informative and challenging lessons that will help them make wise decisions in their growing up years. Congratulations to all our 5th graders for a job well done!

Secret Garden Party

Each spring, as a part of our CSCA literary series, 5th grade students study the classic novel, The Secret Garden. To celebrate the completion of the book and get a full appreciation of the garden experience, our 5th graders were treated to a beautiful English Garden Tea Party in the Chapel circle. Students enjoyed a resplendent lunch, games, and seed planting as a part of this beautiful afternoon. Many thanks to the parent volunteers who worked very hard to make the occasion lovely and delicious!

Unspoken Words, Resounding Deeds… a Principal’s Perspective

Once in a while, when we least expect it, God takes His Word and smacks us right upside the head. And it is the most beautiful experience ever! This happened to me Sunday, March 2nd. I had the pleasure of attending FPC to be commissioned with the Jamaica missions group. After the service, I took the long way back to the car…well, I could say it was because I’m disciplined and seized the opportunity to get some exercise, but the truth is, it happens to go right past the Butterfly Garden, and I never miss an opportunity to visit with the caterpillars. As I drew nearer to the garden, I noticed a young man inside, bent over a small bush, curiously inspecting the milkweed seedpods which had begun to snap open, begging the wind to dispel their wistful seeds. That’s how I met Luke. “Good morning”, I chirped. “I glad you’re enjoying the Butterfly Garden”. “Oh,” he replied. “I come here every Sunday to visit. I’m going to be a lepidopterologist!” Quite ashamed to say I did not know what that meant, I just pretended and nudged him in conversation until he explained! He was a budding zoologist with a passion to focus on butterflies and moths. Yes! My kind of guy…never mind that he was only about 8 years old! We struck up quite an animated conversation, and with his dad filling in some of the proud papa stuffs, we set out on a mission to improve the garden and broaden its academic perspective. Luke gave me tons of tips. I love him…he gets me! I’m glad God allowed us to meet this morning; it was long overdue. As parents and educators, we have no idea of the depth, the breath, or the magnitude of our reach into the lives of our children. As parents, we strive to instill lasting values and raise our little ones to follow Godly principles. As teachers, we prepare lesson plans, make copies, teach lessons, administer tests, and toil over papers to grade. Sometimes, we see the fruits of our labor in memorized nuggets of information and maybe even in high test scores. More often, we don’t. We simply have to trust God that the call that He has placed on our lives to teach, and nurture, and love these precious little children, is having its desired purpose and impact. Once in a while, when our spirits flag a bit, when we become a little weary, or when the seeds of doubt are planted into our minds, God sends a messenger called Luke to remind us that He is pleased with our efforts. We don’t always have to let the right hand know what the left hand is doing. And we shouldn’t let the left hand know what the right hand is doing either. In other words, we don’t have to trumpet our work. Our job is to keep focused on answering the call to prepare the next generation for the destiny God has already ordained for them. Today, I was reminded that the children we raise and teach are not just those sitting in our homes and our classrooms. Our reach is far; it is deep; it is wide. Do not grow weary, my friends, for the very future depends on the work we are doing right now. There is at least one lepidopterologist listening. Matt. 5:3-4: “…do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” ~ Lorraine P. Tracey

Crusader Cafe

Last October, the Crusader Cafe, located in the breezeway on the north end of the gymnasium, opened for business. The concession stand, run by Crusader Club volunteers, is open every day after school from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. It is also open for varsity, and some JV, games. The stand is equipped with a candy counter, refrigerator, freezer, and two microwave ovens. Many students enjoy cold drinks, candy, chips, popcorn, ice cream treats, nachos, and hot dogs, on a daily basis. On game days, the menu expands to include burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and tacos-in-abag. All proceeds go to the CSCA Athletic Department. Already, funds have been used to make improvements to the baseball field and track equipment. This is not just for students! Teachers and staff are always welcome! You may even purchase a cup of fresh, hot coffee to help power you through your busy afternoon! Please come and enjoy a snack while supporting our CSCA athletes!

Andrew Toffoli On Wednesday, February 19th, renowned author, Andrew Toffoli conducted a literary workshop with our elementary students. This is a part of our Purposeful Reading Program, designed to encourage our students to read more and develop a passion for the arts. He read one of his books, Thomoose Jefferson, and even taught our students how to draw characters from some of his books, such as Lionardo Da Vinci and Christopher Cowlumbus. Several lucky students were given autographed copies of Mr. Toffoli’s illustrations and artwork. We can’t wait for Mr. Toffoli to return next year!

talent

Middle School

Crusaders have

What a great show! Last Thursday, March 20th, the CSCA Performing Arts Department held their annual “Crusaders Got Talent” competition. The competition was set into two categories, Upper School and Lower School. The judges had an extremely difficult time deciding on the winner because there was so much talent. In the Upper School the competition was so close that there was a tie for second place between Michael Tralongo for his guitar and vocal rendition of “Radioactive” and Hannah Varghese for her piano rendition of “The Marines Hymn.” The first place winner for Upper School was Jenna Ostroff for her piano performance of “Let It Go.” We are thrilled to say that the Lower School has a lot of talent and cannot wait for them to come to Upper School. The second place winners for Lower School were Annie Sudler, Lois Park, Eliana LeSerra, and Talia Levine for the performance of “When I’m Gone (Cups).” The first place winner was Madison Baeza with her vocal cover of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman.” Congratulations to all the winners, and to all the contestants for making this decision so difficult!

Night of the Arts

Middle School Night of The Arts was an amazing success! When the audience walked in they were able to see the 6th grade water color art work by Miss Moxey’s 6th grade art class. When the show started, Jenna Ostroff, the winner of the Upper School portion of the talent show, performed “Let It Go” on the piano. After that, Joel Monteiro performed “You Are” by Colton Dixon, which he won straight superiors for in the ACSI competition a few weeks ago! Jessica Raspolich, graduating senior and director of the Middle School show, introduced “The (Dis)Concert(ed) Choir,” a show about the thoughts of a middle school choir during a choir performance. This show was hilarious from start to finish, and had the audience rolling in the aisles! From a boy wondering where his mom is in the audience, to dads who cannot stop taking pictures with flash during a performance, to a student worried about his gastrointestinal issues. Middle School Night of the Arts was a night worth remembering!

4th and 5th Grade CSCA Crusader Chorus Receives Superior Rating at ACSI Choral Festival Held at CSCA/FPC!

On Thursday, February 27, 2014, the 4th and 5th Grade CSCA Crusader Chorus attended the ACSI Elementary/Middle Music Festival held at CSCA/First Presbyterian Church. The CSCA Chorus was awarded a Superior rating! The chorus was accompanied by our school/church pianist; Mrs. Soyoung Park. This was an adjudicated festival and was the 5th year being hosted by CSCA. In attendance, along with CSCA, was Calvary Christian Academy’s 5th Grade Chorus. A special treat was a performance given by the CSCA High School Concert Choir. The CSCA 4th and 5th Grade Crusader Chorus is comprised of members that are dedicated to their music and participate not only in school events but also serve as an outreach to their community. A big thank you goes to all of the parents who volunteered their time for this event. It was a wonderful listening experience and day of fellowship for all who attended.

Florida State Thespians The performing arts department attended the Florida State Thespians Conference for the second year in a row. The Florida State Thespian Competition has students competing from all over in different theatrical categories. This year there were approximately 8,000 students in Tampa. Anna Park and Michelle Ng-Reyes earned an Excellent in Duet Musical. J.J. Minshull and Jessica Raspolich earned Excellent for both their monologues. Rachel Hansard earned a Superior in monologue. Along with competing in Thespians, the students got to enjoy live theatre and attend workshops to help improve their craft. Through hard work, dedication, and trusting in the Lord our troupe has established themselves in the theatre world.
