4. For out of working hours EMERGENCIES the NPFS duty worker in the appropriate Next of Kin area can be contacted via the following telephone numbers:

3. The map overleaf shows how the country is divided into three NPFS & RMW areas. You should contact the Area Office that covers the Next of Kin (NOK) address (not the Port Area where the person is serving or where the problem has arisen). You may also contact one of the sub-offices if they are closer to the NOK address. The NOK is nominated by the serving person and is held on official records. There is a list which has a recommended order of precedence for determining NOK (i.e. Spouse, Child, Parent, other blood relatives). For Royal Marines contact the unit RMW office or the NPFS Area Office.

d. If you live abroad and there is a British forces unit or representative nearby you may contact them for assistance or the appropriate Embassy/High Commission. The NPFS & RMW Area Office in HMS NELSON deals with all countries outside the UK except Eire which is dealt with by NPFS & RMW HMS DRAKE.

c. The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association-Forces Help (SSAFA-Forces Help) local office or police station may also be able to assist you. Please see your local telephone directory.

b. The Naval Personal & Family Service (NPFS) Office appropriate to the area in which the Serving person’s Next of Kin live (see paragraph 3 for more details).

a. If the person concerned is serving in the United Kingdom and you know the address or telephone number of the ship or establishment, contact the Commanding Officer or his representative (e.g. Officer of the Day).

2. If there is an emergency at home (such as a serious illness) or you need to pass an urgent message to a serving person, contact one of the following:

1. The purpose of this leaflet is to provide information on how to contact the relevant agency if you need advice or are worried about a member of the Royal Navy or Royal Marines.

NPFS & RMW

NPFS & RMW. It is fully understood that Naval life sometimes causes additional problems for families. As well as their role in the event of an emergency, NPFS & RMW can offer a confidential social work service to all serving personnel (married or single) and their families who may require assistance. In addition to their own resources in dealing with personal problems they are also involved in community and preventative social work. Whilst NPFS & RMW have members of the staff with specialist skills/knowledge they also link in with local agencies and organisations who may be able to help. Please make routine calls during office hours to the relevant office as explained in paragraph 3.

10. Private messages. Details of ships’ telephone numbers when alongside in UK or abroad are available from telephone enquiries at any HM Naval Base/Establishment. It is not normally possible to telephone units at sea but Phonetex (similar to telegrams) can be used to send a message, including asking an individual to contact you. Some units also have E-mail facilities. When it is operationally feasible (this may mean a delay of several days in extreme circumstances) the person onboard will telephone/E-mail you. Contact British Telecon on 0800 190190 for Phonetex details and charges. Please contact the Advice Service for details of any of the above services or in the case of difficulty.

Enquiries concerning HM Ships. If you are concerned because of something unexpected you have learned about your serviceman or servicewoman's ship or establishment from the TV or radio, or have read in the papers you may obtain further information by telephoning one of the Advice Service Offices, or the Confidential Supportline.

NPFS & RMW Advice Service. Has been set up to give you and Naval personnel information on a wide range of subjects, including housing, education, travel and allowances. They are open for visits during working hours on weekdays or can be contacted by letter, Email or telephone. Additionally the Advice Service can assist with queries regarding ships whether deployed or in the UK; telephone numbers when alongside, programme, mail, holidays, homecoming, Families Days etc. They also administer the Link Letter Scheme (LLS) and the Family Information Link Lines (FILL). FILL numbers and further details of both services are available from the Advice Service addresses and telephone numbers listed opposite or see the website, www.rncom.mod.uk

They will endeavour to identify possible sources of support or resolution where necessary but no direct action will be taken by the Supportline. Callers may remain anonymous. Freephone 0800 731 4880, 1030 to 2230 hrs seven days a week. (Overseas call UK ++ 44 1980 630854).

Confidential Supportline. A confidential and impartial telephone listening/advice service offered by trained civilian advisers who will discuss any issue which may be causing concern or personal distress.
