About UNCF UNCF Walk for Education The UNCF Walk for Education is a broad-based community fundraising event to support deserving students with the financial assistance needed to reach their goals of going to and through college. There are two ways to support this worthy cause: 1) corporations and organizations can sponsor/underwrite at one of the sponsorship levels or 2) individuals can recruit family members, friends and co-workers to participate in this non-competitive walk to raise much needed funds for UNCF. Everyone who believes that a mind is a terrible thing to waste but a wonderful thing to invest in should participate, inspire and empower our young people to secure their passports to opportunity – a college degree. Every step we take at the 33rd annual Walk For Education - Chicago brings us that much closer to sending more students to college and fulfilling UNCF’s mission. This event is an opportunity for Chicago to rally together to help children get the college education our nation needs them to have in order to compete in a global economy.

UNCF Mission UNCF envisions a nation where all Americans have equal access to a college education that prepares them for rich intellectual lives, competitive and fulfilling careers, engaged citizenship and service to our nation. UNCF's mission is to build a robust and nationally-recognized pipeline of under-represented students who, because of UNCF support, become highly-qualified college graduates and to ensure that our network of member institutions is a respected model of best practice in moving students to and through college.

About UNCF At a time when a college degree is what a high school diploma was to previous generations, the minimum entry-level requirement for almost every well-paying career, UNCF plays a critical role in enabling more than 60,000 students each year to attend college and get the education they want and deserve. To close the educational attainment gap between African Americans and the majority population, UNCF helps promising students attend college and graduate by: 

 

Providing operating funds for its 37 member colleges, all of them small, liberal arts institutions, making it possible for them to offer their students 21st century academic programs while keeping their tuitions to less than half the average of other private colleges; Administering 400 scholarship and internship programs, so that even students from low- and moderate-income families can afford college tuition, books and room and board; Serving as a national advocate for the importance of minority higher education by representing the public policy interests of its students and member colleges, through its annual television program, An Evening of Stars®, and by using print and electronic media to carry out the mission implicit in its motto, a mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.™

UNCF Member Colleges

In addition to scholarships and other forms of assistance UNCF provides to students, UNCF is also the largest non-governmental provider of support to 37 private member institutions. Because of support from donors through UNCF, member institutions are able to keep tuition approximately 26 percent lower than tuition at other comparable schools. That’s important, because over 90 percent of students at UNCF-member institutions require some form of financial aid. Approximately 84 percent of students at UNCF-member colleges come from families with low to moderate incomes. UNCF-member institutions do much more with less, conferring 9,000 bachelor’s degrees each year.
