Instrument Sizing Measure the player's outstretched arm from neck to mid palm. This simulates holding the violin under one's chin with the scroll resting in the palm of the hand. Below is the size breakdown according to this method.

Violins Size Inches 1/16 14 - 15 1/4 1/10 15 1/4 - 16 7/8 1/8 16 7/8 - 18 1/2 1/4 18 1/2 - 20 1/4 1/2 20 1/4 - 22 1/4 3/4 22 1/4 - 23 5/8 4/4 23 5/8 and up

Violas Viola sizes are determined by the length of the back of the viola in inches (excluding neck button). Any student measuring less than 21" from neck to palm may request a violin of the proper size strung as a viola. Size Inches 12 1/4" 21 - 21 1/2 13" 21 1/2 - 23 1/4 14" 23 1/4 - 24 3/4 15" 24 3/4 - 25 1/2 15 1/2" 25 1/2 - 26 1/4 16" 26 1/4 and up

Cellos Cellos come in sizes from 1/10 to 4/4. Please note that there are two options available in the 1/2 cello: ā€¢

small 1/2: 24" back (measured from button to endpin)

ā€¢

large 1/2: 26" back

It is difficult to judge cello sizing without seeing the student in person. If a cello is available one could see if the child can reach the notes in first position. Or, when the child sits up straight and on the edge of the chair, the ā€œcā€ string peg should be at the height of the left ear. Of course the end pin can be lowered or raised, but if the instrument is too big it will be difficult for the child to reach around with the bow arm.
