AkzoNobel China Key Facts • AkzoNobel have a long history in China with some of our first Performance Coatings companies established here as JV since the early 1980s • Over the years these businesses have grown bigger to now where 4 BU’s in China have more than 1,000 employees each • We grew the business in 2008 to €1,054 million • All together we have 6,300 employees in China • The Chinese government wants to show strength by saying “we can see the economic figures are stabilising already and recovering, which goes to show that the [government’s stimulus] policies have started to take effect,” Zhou Xiaochuan, China’s Central Bank Governor, said at a press conference

AkzoNobel China Key Facts (2) • AkzoNobel is represented with all its businesses in China and the outlook varies between businesses • Hardest hit is export related businesses and businesses closely associated with the construction industry • We still expecting growth is possible in China • Adjustment have been made to the headcounts mainly in areas affected by export or as a consequence of the ICI Deco acquisition. However, overall the Chinese businesses added some 500 employees in 2008 • China have increased salary for employees albeit the increase is below the double digit figures seen in recent years

Our business did well including business driven by export but experienced some weakening in demand recently



We have also experienced soft demand in businesses related to the building sectors but this is expected to come back when the government stimulus package kicks in

Specialty Chemicals in China • Overall we experienced growth in 2008 even we had softer demand in Q4Th • Our products are used as intermediates and are expected to be in demand given the fact that the Chinese economy is still expecting to growth.
