From the Pastor In the mid 1950’s, Martin Luther King had just wrapped up his course work for his Ph.D. He left graduate school and took a job as the pastor of a church in Montgomery, Alabama, because he had a young family and needed to support them as he finished his dissertation. Shortly after he went to Montgomery, Rosa Parks refused to go sit in the back of the bus. A meeting was held of leaders in the AfricanAmerican community. They asked who would lead the charge, who was going to organize the boycott? The other pastors and influential community leaders knew that this looked like risky business. They decided to get the new preacher to take it on. Dr. Martin Luther King had so many reasons to say, “It’s not the right time for me. I have a young family. I have a dissertation to write. My congregation doesn’t know me well, and I don’t know if they will follow me. I cannot do it.” It took a mighty leap of faith to go from “It’s not my time,” to “Yes.” The first public miracle of Jesus was quite dramatic. His first reaction to his mother’s suggestion that he do something to help seems so logical. “My time has not yet come.” His work involved much greater matters than providing refreshments for a bunch of wedding guests. But, Mary knew his heart. He could not be held back from helping those in need. So, she simply instructed the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” He didn’t quietly provide enough wine to assure that the bridegroom and his family would not be embarrassed before their guests. Instead he provided gallons and gallons of a wonderful wine, more than could ever be needed, because his desire to bless this couple knew no bounds. It’s remarkable to think about what happens when a person decides that “It’s not my time” is not the right answer and only “Yes” will do. Not many people in our parish were here when our church building was built, but only a few years ago, many made a sacrifice and joined in the efforts to renovate our church building so that it will serve generations to come as a beautiful and

inspiring place of worship. We are all blessed because a chorus of “Yesses” responded to the invitation to help with this important work. We now have an amazing worship space and we are called to something more important – to be an amazing parish community. We are all so busy, and our calendars are full, and even when we plan carefully we can never be sure exactly how things are going to work out. There are so many good reasons to postpone doing anything more – the semester is just beginning; there’s a new project at work; the children are small or in sports or leaving home soon; we’re too old or we’re too young. Taking part in creating an amazing parish community begins with little steps. Entire families now join together in spending thirty minutes before Mass welcoming others as they enter the church. Smiling and opening a door seems only a small thing, but being welcomed as a member of the family as we enter God’s house fills our mind and heart with the right disposition to be filled with God’s inspiration and blessings during Mass. We all gather around the Altar, and often we sit in the same place every week. We look around and see so many familiar faces who are also where they always are. Only one more step is needed – each week, if we choose to welcome someone or introduce our self to another, our circle of church friends grows larger, and we discover that we are surrounded not just by faces we recognize, but by brothers and sisters in Christ. It is so easy to figure out all the reasons why it is not our time to do more than we are already doing for the Lord. But, our simple “Yes” to an inspiration to say a word of appreciation, or lend a helping hand, or forget our self and think of another has the power to change the world. Because, as the example of Jesus reminds us today, he has the power to take ordinary, everyday things, like water, and turn them into something wonderful. All we have to do is say, “Yes.” –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk

–Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
