Athens First United Methodist Church January 17, 2016 8:30, 9:45 & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome

We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

Newcomer Orientation

We invite you to learn about the life of our church, ways you can get involved, and how to become a member by attending Newcomer Orientation, which is held every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m.

Sunday School

We offer Sunday school for children age 2 through adult each Sunday from 9:45–10:45 a.m.

Luke 22:19-20

The Prayer of Preparation

We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of this Sacrament of thy Son Jesus Christ, that we may walk in newness of life, may grow into his likeness, and may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Receiving of the Elements of Communion

At Athens First United Methodist Church, all are invited to commune at Christ’s table. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. Gluten-free communion elements are available at the center station in the front of the sanctuary.

Anthem Lyrics

Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand. Ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in His hand, Christ our Lord to earth descendeth our full homage to demand. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood. He will give to all the faithful His own self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanquish as the darkness clears away. At His feet the six winged seraph, Cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry: “Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord Most High.”

The Way of Prayer

It is not too late to join Frank Sweezey and Alan Cannon's new small group. The Way of Prayer from the Companions in Christ series expands on our knowledge of prayer through an eleven-week exploration of different forms of prayer practices. Members will embark on a journey of discovery—the discovery of different dimensions of God’s grace and love. Prayer is explored through music, dance, gazing, silence, or acts of service. The Way of Prayer teaches us how to respond to God’s invitation into the divine Presence, and it brings a deeper sense of spiritual vitality and encouragement to seek out new ways to pray. Making Sense of the Bible

Matthew Lawing will begin a Bible study based on Adam Hamilton’s book Making Sense of the Bible on January 24 from 4:45-6:15 p.m. This study invites us into an honest conversation about the Bible. The book begins with foundational questions such as how and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? Is the Bible ever wrong? In approachable and inviting language, Hamilton examines often misunderstood biblical themes leading readers to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving. The books will be handed out to participants on January 24. Register | athensfirstumc.org/registration Beth Dickinson | [email protected] | 706-543-1442
