THE CALVARY MESSENGER Calvary United Methodist Church seeks and invites all to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and our world.

RESOLUTIONS—Again !

A

New Year has come— gain! And with it has come resolutions. I guess we make resolutions now rather than, say, July 1, because it does represent the start of something new—a brand new year, and with it our hopes and aspirations that we might stick to some of those resolutions we make. If you are like me, every year at this time, I resolve to lose some weight, get more exercise, spend more time doing the things I want and like to do. But if you are like me, you just can’t seem to stick with it. I might start a diet, but I soon lapse; I might think of doing more exercise, but I never get around to it; I get busy with other “stuff” and never seem to find the time to spend on some of the more relaxing and pleasurable things in life. I heard someone say that Health and Fitness Club memberships and attendance soar in the months of January and February, but soon after drop off dramatically. So much for resolutions—again. It seems like resolutions are easy to make and fast to break. That’s why I’m not sure I will be making any New Year’s resolution for 2012; I’m not very good at keeping them anyway. So what shall I do? Maybe, I’ll determine to be a better person hopefully by not letting anger and impatience get in the way I see and work with others. Maybe, I’ll determine to work at perfecting my devotional life: Read the American Bible Society daily Bible reading that comes through my email; take seriously the readings from my new daily devotional book Common Prayer and apply the insights there to my life. Prayerfully, I’ll determine to spend more time helping others, especially those in need in our community. And maybe—just maybe—I’ll determine to take better care of myself physically, as well. Determinations, unlike resolutions, should be easier to keep because they involve our relationship with God and with others, and require drawing on God’s available strength and help to stick with them. And God promises to assist all of us in working to perfect our relationship with him and with others. God helps us meet our determinations that are consistent with God’s will. That’s it! No more resolutions, just determinations. Not a bad way to start the year; and with God’s help, I’ll stick to it all! How about you? What might your New Year’s Determinations be? With God’s available help, you will be able to stick with them. I’ll be praying for you; I hope you’re praying for me, too, that all of us can achieve our New Year’s Determinations. Happy New Year of Meeting All Your Determinations!

Ministry Spotlight: Children’s Church

SPORTS SUNDAY Sunday, February 5, 2012 Join us for this special time during all worship services as we worship God through the lens of some of our favorite sports traditions! This will be a great time to bring friends, family and neighbors to experience something truly exciting and new in worship. If you would like to be part of the planning team, please speak with one of the pastors.

Jesus said, “ Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) One of the many ministries of Calvary UMC is our Children’s Church program. This ministry offers age-appropriate Bible stories, games, activities and crafts to children aged 5 through grade 3 during our 8:30 worship service. Not only does this ministry offer meaningful activities for our children, it offers adults in our congregation the opportunity to serve others by volunteering to teach or help with Children’s Church. The weekly lessons, activities and crafts are all provided for you. Volunteers need only a few minutes before the children arrive to read over the lesson and prepare any needed supplies. Two adults are always present, so if you would like to begin by serving as the helper to see how things are done, you would be scheduled to serve alongside an experienced Children’s Church volunteer to learn the ropes. Sign-up sheets for volunteering are located in the Wesley room, beside the signin book for Children’s Church. And if you have not yet had Safe Sanctuaries training, our DCE, Desiree Baker, can provide that. More volunteers are needed to keep this important ministry going. The Education Ministry would like you to prayerfully consider joining the Children’s Church Ministry. You do not have to be the parent of a child who attends Children’s church. All you need is a love of children and a desire to serve our lord through this important ministry. For more information, contact our DCE, Desiree Baker, by phone or by email. Contact information is on our church website.

SUPPORT HOOD COLLEGE STUDENTS Calvary has begun a new partnership with the InterVarsity (IV) ministry at Hood College. Beginning in fall 2011, the IV staff person for Hood, Anna Sykes, began using office space in the Baker Center. We are excited to be able to support her work in this way and are looking forward to growing our relationship with IV and Hood College in partnership with Anna. We are looking for people interested in helping us expand our support and relationship to IV and Hood, and we invite you to join us for an information session and discussion with Anna on Tuesday, January 10 at 7 p.m. in the library. Contact Pastor Sarah for more information and to RSVP.

Come and have dinner with friends or family celebrating St. Valentine’s Day! On February 11 at 6pm Calvary Youth will host a fundraiser for the church’s general fund. There will be nursery for infants through 1st graders The Fare: Chicken Pasta with your choice of sauces Garlic Bread, and Salad Assorted Desserts. Cost is $10 per person with a $30 max per family. To purchase tickets find a youth on Sunday, call/email Katrina Marie ([email protected]) or call the church office before February 10th! There will be a few surprises as well...something about music I have heard….. 3

Amongst this great diversity of accomplished individual goals, there appears one common goal. With each person comes a definite decision to lose something that had been keeping them from gaining what was most important to them. That is, for some the weight loss would allow greater activity with children and family, better health, and a hopeful outlook toward life. For others, even minimal loss of weight would give them the encouragement to dedicate themselves to accomplishing goals and building better self-esteem. For others, as their self-image improved greatly participants often come to know that they were loved for who they were not because of how they looked. The goal of losing weight becomes symbolic as well as physical. For these folks, the loss of something that had been limiting their life came to encourage the gain of something greater: they saw themselves as a person of worth. As Christians, we might be able to use this model of change and renewal in our spiritual growth. We stand before the Lord who knows us inside and out. The Lord loves us despite our sinful choices, our lack of regard for life and our selfish agendas. We are his children and the sheep of his pasture. (Psalm 100:3) In standing before the Lord, we come to acknowledge there are many things we could adjust and do better. Making the choice to step up and face those challenges is a good beginning. When we seek to repent of our sins, we are asking for forgiveness and new chance. Then, as we step out to act toward making those adjustments and living life as the Lord calls us to live, we become more aligned with what the Lord wants for us. We seek to be in right relationship with the Lord. This does not mean we will always accomplish our goal or that we will sin no more. It does mean that we are seeking help which comes best from the Lord. We are acknowledging that we want to lose the things that are keeping us from being all we can be and working to gain those things which will yield a full and abundant life (John 10:10). This requires changes and determined discipline. As we to this time of Epiphany, a season of discovery and revelation, we tend to make goals. Seek the Lord’s help in becoming a stronger follower of Jesus Christ. Ask the Lord for what you need to lose in order to gain your life. You might not be seen on television but perhaps you might become one of the Lord’s biggest losers (discarding sin, wasteful actions, hurtful words, etc.) and through the accomplishment of this goal come to know you have managed the greatest of gains (trust in the Lord and eternal life!) Blessings to you as you strive to meet your personal and spiritual goals this year. Encourage one another and stay in touch with the best of trainers – Jesus Christ our Lord!

Consecration for 2012 Centennial Memorial UM Church Leaders On Sunday, January 8 we will consecrate our new officers for the calendar year 2007 during our morning worship. We ask for ALL who were elected at our Charge Conference (all chairpersons and committee members) in October to be present to assume their offices and dedicate themselves to working on behalf of Christ’s Church at Centennial United Methodist Church. We begin this new calendar year with hope and gratitude to the Lord for his presence in our lives. We are called to witness to our faith, welcome new friends in to our fellowship and be in mission and ministry for Christ. As elected officers for our church family, our responsibility is to listen to the Lord and respond through acts of ministry. In this ministry we should listen to the people we represent and who have entrusted us with these offices, hear their concerns, bring those concerns and our own to the appropriate legislative body in the church and be faithful to attendance in worship and program. We call upon our Centennial UM Church Family to attend worship and show your support for these who have accepted the task of serving as church officers. Please keep them in your prayers throughout the coming year. Our first Administrative Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 17 at 7 p.m. in the church parlor. Pastor Helen, Pastor Mike and Ad. Council Chairperson, Delores Summers, look forward to working together in ministry. We ask the Lord to challenge us in our faith and help us to welcome those seeking to be in relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Stepping Up and Stepping Out: The Biggest Loser Might Be The Greatest Gainer? Some of you are aware of the television program called “The Biggest Loser.” Coming from a belief that no one is a “loser” in the eyes of the Lord, I must admit I am bothered by the title. The program is a designed to encourage people to lose weight. For some, the loss of pounds is a necessity of health and longevity of life itself. For others, it is critical for their self-image and care that some serious change of body weight occurs. The whole program accents nutrition and diet, exercise and strength training as well as the support from family and friends. To heighten interest, there are competitions along the way – which would have the greatest percentage of weight loss, who would lose the most pounds, and who ultimately would win the monetary prize for accomplishing the greatest loss of pounds for the entire time. The basic goal was to be the one who was “the biggest loser.”

With Christ’s love, Pastor Helen 4

HOLIDAY 2nd St. & Hope Board Meeting Program Staff Trustees Administrative Council Church wide Planning Meeting Calvary Church Council Staff Parish

As are all things at this time of year, the financial status of Calvary UMC is in transition. We are closing out FY 2011 and looking forward to FY 2012. Final numbers of year end will be included in your year end statements and the February News Letter. We can, however, look at the trend of expenses experienced through November 30. Income of $694,131 was 88% in meeting the $787,157 budget. Income to the Church should be 92% at this time. This means we have to rely heavily on the month of December; and specifically on the Christmas Holidays, in order to accomplish all we have currently in the budget for Ministry. Expenses for the Care of God’s House: heat, light, insurance repairs, etc.; were 110% of their budget. Our budget projections were too optimistic when we developed the budget late 2010. Recognizing the problem, the Ministry and Program areas began reducing expenses where feasible during the year. As of the end of November, we still had a great deal of Missions and Church & Society budget items to honor. As of December 15, we have received 201 Pledges, less than the 223 for 2011, for a commitment of $559,843, greater than 2011’s $550,749. There are 37 New Pledges and 75 whom have increased their amount of giving. We are in prayer that we will continue to improve those numbers through the entire effort of the Church through this coming year. The Finance Ministry

The Lord’s Laundry Update Objectives: 1. To provide personal dignity to the poor by providing them clean clothing 2. To relieve the working poor of having to spend money on laundering their clothing thus allowing them the opportunity to save some money 3. To provide an opportunity to serve in a ministry that is nonthreatening, spiritually fulfilling, and very practical for those you are serving. 4. To provide a living witness of a loving God to a watching world This ministry started at Calvary Church December 2011 when we began providing laundry service to clients at the Linton Cold Weather Shelter. We also offer laundry service through the Second Street and Hope Program at Centennial. In the past year we have served over 50 clients providing them clean clothing for the week. Servants are asked to pick up a bag or two of soiled laundry to wash. Clean clothing is returned to the church on Sunday mornings and returned to the clients at the shelter Sunday evening. We use an online tool for tracking since the need for this service varies each week. You do not need to be available to serve every week. Soiled clothing is available for pick up anytime of the day or evening beginning on Thursday each week. If this is a ministry you feel called to help with, please contact me: Pat Herber 301-473-4013 or [email protected] REMEMBER: “In as much as you have done it to the least of these, My brothers, you have done it unto Me.” Matthew 25:40 6
