President’s Message

As we all march toward the holidays and New Year’s Eve, I realize what a quick year it has been. It feels like the Fourth of July was just last week, well, maybe last month. Looking back I see how much progress we have made on a number of fronts, but I also see how many things are still left to accomplish. Despite the comings and goings of presidents and our varying goals, the fact remains that the Chamber moves forward by the dedication and hard work of its members. Members who come together to work on a common vision of a local community that creates opportunities and connections for its members. Our Ambassador Club is a great example of our members come together to create an inviting atmosphere for new members to become active. As others and I have seen, participation is the key to our members receiving full benefits

from their membership. Being an active member of the business community, putting a face to the business and creating long lasting business friendships can only happen through participation. The Ambassador Club not only reaches out to our membership but also creates a solid core of friends that work together for a shared purpose, and through this, create opportunities for each other that go far beyond the Chamber. We have many other groups that also deserve a mention, including the Young Professionals, Women’s Networking Group, Golf Committee and many others. Like the Ambassadors, these groups not only do valuable work for the Chamber, but they also create great opportunities for our members to create connections and friendships. I also want to thank the Chamber staff for all or their hard work and dedication. These folks also facilitate connections by watching all the details—a vital task that

cannot be overlooked. We have made many improvements at the office to help them with this task and within the year, will also be helping our members to connect and communicate. Keep an eye out for information on our new website improvements that will allow our members to access the website to communicate, advertise, signup for events and manage their membership. I have been asked many times about the end of my term. I am sad to see it end so soon. But I am excited to see what it is to come with Heather Warthen’s term. My work is not done. There are still many things to do and accomplish, and I look forward to one last productive year being involved on the board. I know that by participating, both personally and through my business have benefitted immeasurably and I am thankful to my Board of Directors, our volunteers and our members for making that possible. Mayor’s News and Notes

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We wish all of the chamber members a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. As we begin 2015, we look forward to more milestones in the village’s 123 year history.

Orland Park continues to be the location of choice for businesses and professionals. We look forward to breaking ground for the University of Chicago in Downtown Orland Park and the village and the chamber regularly celebrate the grand openings for new businesses and offices in the village. The New Year brings the installation of the chamber’s new officers and I extend our warm congratulations to incoming Chamber President Heather Warthen. I first met Heather when she was the editor of the “Orland Park Prairie Newspaper” and have found her to be a great advocate for Orland Park. We wish her the best in her term as chamber president. ‘TIS THE SEASON. The village’s Public Works and Parks crews are

ready for what Mother Nature sends this winter, having done a great job during last year’s Polar Vortex. Let’s hope the weather is milder than what we had last year.

LaGrange Road currently carries 40,000 vehicles per day and is expected to carry more than 65,000 vehicles per day by the year 2040. The improvements currently being made are necessary to improve traffic flow and safety through this essential transportation corridor.

STATE OF THE VILLAGE. I look forward to joining all of you on Wednesday, March 11th for the State of the Village Luncheon. This is always a great way to share with the chamber the many wonderful things happening in Orland Park.

The project corridor includes additional through lanes; intersection improvements including additional turn lanes at key intersections; improved traffic signal coordination; access restrictions; improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities; improved roadway alignment and roadway enhancements.

WELCOME, BRASS TAP. This is a new restaurant opening in the Orland Crossing Shopping Mall. Owned by a village resident, we look forward to the Brass Tap becoming yet another successful Orland Park food establishment.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this massive IDOT project through the center of Orland Park and we apologize for the inconveniences these improvements have caused. We all look forward to its completion --- seeing the long overdue improvements made to this gateway through Orland Park.

IDOT’S LA GRANGE ROAD PROJECT. The coming year also brings the planned completion of IDOT’s LaGrange Road Expansion Project later in the year. This schedule and construction staging is dependent on weather and utility relocations and are subject to change. Regular updates appear on the village’s website at www. orlandpark.org.

The Power of OPACC I joined the Orland Chamber four years ago because I wanted to grow my business. The unforeseen benefit has been the friendships and professional connections that have culminated over the years. I have been involved in other chambers and there was something special about this one. I joined the Ambassador Committee and just «showed up» to as many events as I could. Most of my current clients are directly linked to my involvement in the Orland Chamber. I believe it is important to mention this because it’s easy to get discouraged if we don’t see an immediate response or increase in our business. Truth be told, anything worthwhile is earned. Relationships are formed and there is a true sense of community, but.... you get out what you put in. For me, the return on my investment of time has been outstanding. I am thankful for all of my OPACC friends.

participation in the event of an audit. Then create all new files for 2015. You should retain your 2014 files for four years.

Death and taxes, both are facts of life, but at least there’s no reason to mourn tax season—just the follow the tips for organizing your 2014 taxes below. • Get a tub(s) to hold your 2014 files. It’s imperative to keep all your data in case you get audited. Be sure to keep bank and credit card statements, sales data, customer and vendor files as well as any other transaction files that pertain to 2014. Make sure you have receipts and other documentation to support all red flag items such as travel, meals, entertainment, home office, and vehicle expenses. Your 2014 appointment book or a printout of your computerized calendar should also be stored with these documents. This way you can substantiate vehicle expense and material

• Make sure that you keep anything with the status of “permanent file” in an easilyaccessible location. An example of a permanent file would be insurance policies and asset files or customer data such as credit applications and contracts. • You should also store your 2014 payroll files including timecards, payroll registers, copies of W2s and payroll tax returns. Bear in mind that the IRS requires that you hold on to these files for seven years. • Payroll tax returns for fourth quarter and the annual Form 940 are due by Jan. 31. W2s must be mailed by Jan. 31 in order to be in compliance. Check to make sure you have current addresses for each employee. Form W3 and copies of the W2s must be mailed to the government by Feb. 28. • Forms 1099 must also be mailed by Jan. 31, however, don’t mail the government copies until the Feb. 28 due

date. This way, if one of your independent contractors reports an error to you, you can make the changes without having to send in corrected 1099s to the government. Verify your contractor’s mailing address before mailing, and check the rules pertaining to 1099s. The basic guidelines to follow are: The recipient is unincorporated (unless an attorney) and was paid more than $600 for services rendered during the calendar year. • Your fourth quarter 2014 estimated tax payment for your individual taxes as well as corporate tax, if applicable, is due Jan. 15. • Make sure your books are in order so you can close out 2014. Reconcile all bank and credit card accounts and review the general ledger to ensure that each transaction has been posted to the proper category. • Bear in mind that if your legal form is corporate and you operate on a calendar year, your 2014 income tax return is due by March 15. Tips To Stay Safe During Snow Shoveling Season moving. • Warm up thoroughly before tackling the job—A good five to ten minute stretch, especially of the back and hamstrings, will reduce potential injury during snow shoveling. Snow shoveling is one of the more common causes of back injuries during the winter months. However, this type of injury is preventable if you know the best ways to remove snow without straining the back. Follow the guidelines listed below to avoid injury and pain during the upcoming snow months. • The right shovel counts--Pick an ergonomic snow shovel, one with a curved handle or an adjustable handle length, to minimize painful bending or overarching your back. Choose one with a small, lightweight plastic blade to reduce the amount of weight that you’re

• Use ergonomic lifting techniques—When at all possible, push the snow to one side rather than lifting it. Bend at the hips, not the lower back; never twist your back, but rather pivot your whole body while shoveling. Don’t toss your load of snow; it’s safer to walk or push the snow to a new area. • Pace yourself—shoveling small amounts of snow frequently is less strenuous than shoveling a large pile at one time. When shoveling, especially wet and heavy snow, take frequent breaks, about two minutes for every 10 to 15 minutes of activity.

file now before the big rush so you can get the proper attention your business deserves. If you can’t make the deadline, you are entitled to an automatic extension to Sept. 15. Make sure you or your tax pro files the appropriate extension form. • Computerize all your transactions, expenses, income, profit and loss statements, balance sheet and general ledger. • Tax planning is essential for all business owners. But right now is not a good time to ask your tax pro to review your situation. Unless you feel it’s urgent, you will likely get better attention once tax season is over. After making projections, discuss your numbers with your tax pro at midyear to determine if you are on course with estimated tax payments and to discover if there are any advantages in the tax code that work for you and your business to minimize your tax liability. Happy New (Laws) Year!

• Keep on your feet on solid ground—wear shoes or boots with good treads to minimize slipping on snow or ice. Spread plenty of sand or salt to increase traction on your driveway or sidewalk. • Blow away—if possible, use a snow blower or better yet, leave the heavy stuff to the professionals! Don’t ignore any signs of overexertion even after a short stint of snow shoveling, says Dr Anthony Murino, Silver Cross emergency department physician. Chest pains, shortness of breath or light-headedness, dizziness or numbness or tingling of the arms are symptoms to take seriously. “If symptoms don’t subside after a few minutes of rest indoors, it’s best to play it safe and see your doctor or go to the ER,” Murino cautions. “This could be a sign that something more serious is at play.”

January means new resolutions and new laws. Only one of those two can be broken without severe repercussions. BAH? A Business After Hours or BAH is a networking event hosted after (or before) business hours. It’s a get together that lets you showcase your business and services. All that you need to do is provide light refreshments and get the word out. Some companies like to send invitations; others will make phone calls to invite their client base. Whatever you decide the main thing is to get the word out about the event.

OPACC’s Rene Tabor, Metamorphosis speech, leadership and presentation coach, is an excellent communicator and leader and she has the accolades to prove it! In honor of her achievements in the Toastmasters-Orland Park chapter, Tabor was awarded the Area Governor of the Year Award and Key Area Governor Award, as well as membership in the President’s Distinguished Club, the organization’s highest level of recognition. With more than 300,000 members in 14,000 clubs worldwide, Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development.

• Find a chamber partner. Start with our website membership directory and look for a partner. Not sure where to start? Call our office at (708) 349-2972 and we’ll make some suggestions.

• Consider how to make your event stand out. Some have a raffle giveaway and some have organized their BAH to include several members as a trade show type event. Still others choose a theme for their BAH. Your goal should be to make it a fun event that members want to attend.
