Queen & country The saga of Victorian England continues in a second season If

ye hardly knew she (follow me?), meaning you missed the first season of Victoria on Masterpiece, here’s your chance to catch up as season two begins this month. First, the years: Queen Victoria reigned over Great Britain and Ireland from 1837, and was empress of India from 1877, until she died in 1901. Among British monarchs, the length of her reign is exceeded only by Queen Elizabeth II. Shortly after ascending the throne, she married her cousin, Prince Albert of Germany, which caused controversy. But well before that, her rise to the throne was complicated. The lineage: Queen Victoria’s ascendancy was born of tragedy. Her grandfather was King George III. Upon his death, the crown first passed to his oldest son, George IV, but his unhappy, arranged marriage produced just one child, Charlotte, who died at the age of 21. George IV passed his crown to his younger brother, Prince Frederick, but he too died childless. Frederick’s crown then passed to younger brother Prince William. the late Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who never held the crown himself, before his untimely death from pneumonia, but was the father of Alexandrina Victoria. Hence, the queen, the reason for the series, and a fascinating period of historical drama. The queenly details and political climate: A few interesting facts, before the recap: Victoria was famously short (4-foot-11). Later in life she was also large, reportedly with a 50-inch waist. She could draw, paint and was a gardener. She is the reason for the designation “Victorian England.” Great strides in science, industry and literacy were made during her reign. During her era, Britain expanded its imperial reach, to include Canada, Australia, India and various possessions in Africa and the South Pacific. Politically during this time, Britain’s Tory Party divided into the Liberal and Conservative parties, and history holds that Victoria navigated the opposing factions fairly well. The drama: But how season two handles these issues will be seen – this month. n

a look back at season one:

Episode 1 As a new queen, the young Victoria struggles to take charge amid her family’s attempts to manipulate her. Victoria’s friendship with Prime Minister Lord Melbourne sparks a national crisis. Episode 2 Dodging both rioters and suitors, Victoria grows into her royal role. As she faces pressure to marry, her friendship with Lord Melbourne grows more complex. Episode 3 One of Victoria’s suitors pays a surprise visit, igniting the queen’s fiery temper and earning her disdain. Episode 4 Victoria’s courtship leads to second thoughts and political perils. Episode 5 As Albert struggles to find his purpose far from home, Victoria finds a way to have it all. Episode 6 Victoria faces a frightening choice. Will she and Albert find a way to triumph over her enemies? Episode 7 On the verge of the big day, Victoria spurns advice and wanders outside of the palace walls, attracting the devoted and demented alike.

CRYING WOLF By Dayna Harpster

Watch WGCU HDTV NATURE Arctic Wolf Pack Wednesday, Jan. 17 @ 8 pm

We thought it was a greeting. As we walked up the long driveway to the house that serves as Shy Wolf Sanctuary’s home base in Naples, we heard the creatures stirring. A howling began, first one animal, then a chorus. The sound was so much gentler than we had imagined, incorporating different pitches that resulted in a full choral sound. It was music. As we got closer, we dodged volunteers heading out to the habitats with buckets of chicken parts. It was mealtime and the residents knew it. The wolves were singing for their supper – or rather, lunch. Open only by appointment, Shy Wolf Sanctuary is located on the 2½ acre private residence of Nancy and Kent Smith. They apparently began the animal rescue slowly, starting in 1993, about four years after they bought the property. That’s when they took on their first resident – a threelegged leopard named Moondance. A year later, they acquired four wolf puppies that needed a home. Today, Shy Wolf Sanctuary is a nonprofit with a stable of loyal volunteers and a paid executive director, former volunteer Deanna Deppen. Most of the residents are wolves and wolfdog hybrids, which are considered unadoptable by domestic animal services. Some animals on the property were born in the wild, some in captivity. Coyotes, gopher tortoises and a cougar also are among about 60 animals living there, in habitats with 10-foot high fencing, guillotine gates and other safety features. Shy Wolf doesn’t buy, sell or breed animals. Its mission is rescue for the animals and education for the humans. An outreach program with the Children’s Network of Southwest Florida brings

children to the sanctuary to learn about the animals and to paint structures for the habitats. The day we visited, Deppen called to say she was running a bit late due to an animal emergency. She was at the veterinarian’s office with an elderly skunk that the sanctuary took in recently “and we had to help it cross over,” she said. Back at the sanctuary, Deppen began a tour with a talk about Shy Wolf and its mission. “Wolves are the most maligned of animals,” she said. “Everyone thinks it’s a horrible beast that kills and maims.” But humans killed so many that at one point the wolf was close to extinction. “When man kills, he goes for the strongest and biggest. When wolves kill, they go for the hurt and sick,” she said, introducing many of the animals by pointing to a posterboard with their photos and telling their stories. Many of the animals at the sanctuary came from domestic conditions that they outgrew, with owners not capable of housing them properly. They come to Shy Wolf and enjoy roomy habitats, appropriate food and often, other animals with which to socialize. That makes for strange bedfellows at times. The resident bobcat lives with a very large tiger housecat and the situation works. Older wolfdogs often care for new wolfdog puppies as if they are their own. Sanctuary neighbors are some of the most dedicated volunteers. Inside and outside the gates, a balance is struck. n

Above: Misun is 100 percent wolf. Now 7 years old, he came to the sanctuary as a pup. Opposite: Taavi is a wolfdog that Shy Wolf took in as an emergency rescue from Pasco County. He became a companion to Indy, a blind senior wolf at the sanctuary. Photos courtesy of Shy Wolf

Shy Wolf among natural wonders punished by Hurricane Irma Shy Wolf Sanctuary, like other natural preserves and landmarks in Southwest Florida, suffered the wrath of Hurricane Irma in September.

Executive Director Deanna Deepen said that the Naples facility endured about $26,000 in damages to fencing and property, plus about $18,000 in damage to the roof of the sanctuary’s one building. Much of the shade canopy over and around the animal habitats was lost and quite a few trees were downed. Although Shy Wolf was fortunate to have local volunteers haul debris and help from Lutheran Service, plus – inspiringly – two women who drove from long distances (Massachusetts and Pennsylvania) to help, there still is work to be done. That kind of work is the subject of the WGCU documentary In Irma’s Wake, which chronicles the efforts of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Naples Botanical Garden, The Naples Zoo, Everglades Wonder Gardens, The Calusa Nature Center, and the Six Mile Cypress Slough to rebuild and recover post-Irma. VISITING ROYALTY IN THE LAND OF THE KINGS By Carol Martyn

We love to travel,

and Egypt has been on our bucket list for a long time. However, due to security issues since the Arab Spring, my husband, Ray, and I did not feel comfortable going. But thanks to WGCU Public Media, we were able to fulfill our life’s dream in September. WGCU teamed with Debonair Concierge Travel Services and Egypt & Beyond Travel to provide the perfect adventure in complete safety and luxury. We visited the highlights of Egypt in style including the Egyptian Museum with approximately 160,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of Egypt’s past and the ancient burial ground of Saqqara, the site of many step pyramids and tombs from the 1st and 2nd Dynasties. At Giza, we arrived to see the Great Pyramid two hours before the area opened to the public and had a personal tour as dawn broke. Dr. Zahi Hawass, a worldrenowned Egyptologist, spoke to us at the paws of the Sphinx (the general public is not allowed that close to it, but we were). An excursion into Old Cairo allowed us to visit multiple churches and synagogues of major biblical history, including BenEzra Synagogue, believed to have been built on the site where the pharaoh’s daughter found baby Moses. Abu Serga was reportedly constructed upon the secret cavern in which the Holy Family hid for three weeks after fleeing Israel and King Herod. We learned some of the artisan culture, about papyrus paper, textile weaving, pharaonic essential oils, hand-woven tapestries, alabaster products and carpet weaving.

We flew to Luxor and stayed at the Old Winter Palace Hotel, where in 1922 the announcement was made about the discovery of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Early the next morning we floated in a hot-air balloon over the Valley of the Kings, known to contain 62 tombs and chambers, Deir-el-Medina, and the Thebes Necropolis. We then ventured by foot into some of the pharaohs’ tombs. Karnak Temple, the second largest ancient religious site in the world, was spectacular and impossible to describe. The next four nights were spent aboard the Amarco II, sailing down the Nile on the luxurious, 35 all-suite cabin ship. Next stops included the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (the only female pharaoh) and other sites. Our last day was spent in Abu Simbel at the incredible temples of Ramses II and his favorite wife, Queen Nefertari, then we retired to the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, where Agatha Christie wrote her famed 1937 novel Death on the Nile. The trip was five-star all the way – a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. n Editor’s note: Carol and Ray Martyn traveled to Egypt with a group from WGCU last fall.

Who claims a find that impacts mankind? By Dayna Harpster The team of scientists involved in the recent discovery of unknown spaces in the Great Pyramid of Khufu came from France, Japan and Canada as well as Egypt. It was the first group in 30 years to be authorized by the Egyptian government to investigate the pyramids. The finding has been termed the greatest discovery in Egypt’s Khufu pyramid for more than 1,000 years, according to producers of Secrets of the Dead: Scanning the Pyramids, which airs this month on WGCU HDTV. The Great Pyramid is the only one of the seven wonders of the world still standing. For more than two years, the multicultural team explored every corner of the pyramid, using non-invasive technologies including infrared cameras, 3D scanners and cosmological particle detectors located inside and outside the monument. As first published in the journal Nature, this team discovered a 30-meter space above the pyramid’s Grand Gallery. Most experts believe this newly found space is empty. So rather than being a repository for gold or jewels or something else, it’s probably a great clue to engineering and architecture knowledge of the time. The space may exist to avoid overburdening DISCOVERY see page 24 Below: The WGCU tour group at a private lecture at the Sphinx with Dr. Zahi Hawass (center, blue shirt). the structure, preventing collapse.

“It’s like this old adage I heard from an archaeologist several generations older. She was an 80-year-old woman when I worked with her, and she said, ‘It’s not what you find, it’s what you find out.’ It’s cool and exciting to find stuff. But the part where we can’t sleep at night is when we’re in the lab and have all of our data and we can start to see the patterns emerge in those data,” Locascio said. “In Egypt, it would be fascinating to see these complex and sophisticated methods of leaving voids to be sure the pyramids stand for thousands of years. It would say a lot about the level of knowledge they had.” Regardless, the Egyptian government must approve any studies. That’s a common caveat, Locascio said. “Archaeology has kind of an ugly history if we go back to the 18th century,” he said. “It’s rooted in explorers taking stuff and sending it back to their native countries.” This is what continues to be debated about the Elgin Marbles, a collection of sculptures, architectural features and inscriptions from the Parthenon that Lord Elgin of England removed between 1801 and 1805. At that time, Elgin was ambassador to the Ottoman Empire and claimed permission from authorities to remove the pieces, which he sent home to England. Still, so many years after his death, a great deal of them remain the property of several European museums. It’s an irritant to diplomats in Greece, who continue to believe they were stolen and ask for their return. The issue gained publicity again in 2014 when lawyer Amal Clooney, wife of actor George Clooney, was one of the legal team advising the Greek government to insist on their return. “Countries are protective because there is a history of wealthier countries coming and sending artifacts back. It grew out of colonialism,” Locascio said. “Certainly the finding has an importance broader than to just Egypt. But modern politics plays into this, like it does to everything else.” It’s likely that the team that made this discovery will be authorized to continue to work at the site, Locascio said. Also, interested scientists likely will apply for grants to research there as well, from such entities as the National Science Foundation in the United States and comparable funding sources in other countries. n

KiDS Back in The Neighborhood It’s 2018, and this year marks the 50th anniversary of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Fred Rogers received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Emmy telecast in 1997. In his acceptance speech, he asked audience members to spend 10 seconds in silence, thinking about the people who loved them and helped them achieve what they have. “l’ll watch the time,” he said, reassuringly, pushing up his sleeve to see his watch. And the audience complied. WGCU viewers have plenty of time to recall their fondness for

Rogers – who in addition to becoming a television pioneer and PBS icon, was a Presbyterian minister, music composer and lifelong student of child development – at 6 am on HDTV Saturdays this month with the airing of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, his seminal show. But that’s not all. Although Rogers died in 2003, the Fred Rogers Company lives on and is responsible for such popular kids’ shows as Daniel Tiger, Peg + Cat, Odd Squad and Through the Woods, plus digital extras Rogers probably never imagined. n

Island fare Hugh Sinclair is “Chef Irie,” host of Taste the Islands. He’s a personal chef, caterer and culinary consultant to elite athletes and corporate clients as well as star of the show. Each 30-minute episode features a traditional, local dish or ingredient. Chef Irie is sometimes joined by Haitian-born chef Thia Verna and co-host Lisa Lee Arneaud. Chef Thia infuses Caribbean, African, Latin, Asian, French and Mediterranean flavors into Haitian fine dining, and Arneaud takes viewers on a cultural exploration of the sweet, spicy and exotic flavors of Caribbean cuisine. Several episodes air this month. Check wgcu.org/tv/schedules.

Jan. 7 Humankind – Public Options

As the health care debate continues, we take a provocative look at the Canadian system, which covers all citizens for a fraction of what Americans spend – and patients never see a bill for doctor or hospital visits. The model in Canada is enormously popular, but we also learn the problems there: wait times for treatment and the cost of prescription drugs, which in Canada are second highest in the world. Also, we consider the “public option” for the U.S., in which citizens of any age could opt-in to Medicare, but if insured by their employer could keep that coverage.
