Nutrition Tips Feel a winter cold coming on? Snack on a mandarin. Mandarins are in peak season during the winter; these fruits brighten up the produce aisle with their sun-filled color. Mandarins are sweet, easy to snack on, and high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is a key nutrient to keep you strong and healthy. Snacking on two mandarins provides nearly 300% of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C. Make sure you try the Mandarin Salad next time it’s offered at your school cafeteria!

A HEALTHY NEW YEAR Get Active! Walking is good for your heart, great for your bones and burns calories, but some days the weather outside is not too delightful. If the winter cold has derailed your plans to be more physically active, try moving indoors, including taking the stairs or walking briskly around the mall.

The key to keeping one’s New Year’s resolutions involves picking a realistic goal and taking small steps towards that goal. Below are four easy lifestyle changes to make 2018 a healthy year. Eat Breakfast Daily – When you eat breakfast you are fueling up for the day. A healthy breakfast gives you the nutrients you need to stay alert and focused. Don’t forget to grab a free breakfast every morning at your school! Make healthy food choices – A healthy eating plan emphasizes fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is also low in saturated fats, salt, and added sugars. When you build your plate, start off with vegetables and fruits first, and then pick small portions of the other items.

Drink water – Getting enough water is important for your overall health. Choose water when thirsty and when eating meals. Try enhancing the flavor with a lemon wedge or slices of fruit. Be active daily - Aim for 30 minutes every day. Ease your way into walking by breaking it up throughout the day: 10 minutes before work or school, 10 minutes afterwards and 10 minutes at home. Get enough sleep -  Insufficient sleep can affect your energy levels the next day and it is also associated with weight gain. The amount of sleep you need changes as you age, but try to get at least 8 hours every night. Did you know being physically active can help you fall asleep more easily at night?
