White Memorial Presbyterian Church | January 2019 Happy New Year

Out With the Old... … and in with the new. How can it be 2019? For many of us, an old year cannot end too quickly. This might be you as 2018 might have been a time of anxiety, grief, fear, loss, or disappointment. The year 2019 might hold promise for you in tangible ways. For others, 2018 may have been a year of promise and its closing might be a prelude for dread. You might have a feeling of foreboding: “2019 cannot possibly be as good as 2018 - something must go wrong. What goes up must come down.” Either way, the new year has arrived. Sunrise, sunset — one day after another, years come and years go. Chronos (time, calendar time - the root of the word chronology) to the ancient Greeks was a titan. A mythical force as old as the earth, before which there was no resistance. With each day we age a little more. It is impossible to resist. I remember our congregation-wide read of the book Being Mortal which is a little book I think about almost every day. My favorite moment of the book comes early, when the author is speaking to a gerontologist about the battle against aging. The doctor says that the battle is “a slaughter.” Men and women never win. Why? Because time is titan. Dreading getting older? Welcoming it? Old year? New year? The calendar turns, and we are powerless to stop it. But here’s the thing. Powerless we may be, but helpless in the face of new dates we are not. We have choices. We have our wills to exercise. We may not be able to stop time, but we do have the choice as to how we use the time we have been given. How we age is not entirely up to us. How will we live while we age? This is the first movement in the beautiful symphonies of the lives we have been given. In 2019 we can be more generous. In 2019 we can be more loving. In 2019 we can become more knowledgeable about Scripture. In 2019 we can memorize a new life verse. My favorite: “Do not be afraid, my little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” Luke 12:32. In 2019 we can help more, pray more, worship more. In 2019 we can speak more truth. In 2019 we can make new friends, cross racial divides, adopt a refugee family, reacquaint with a long estranged relative. In 2019 we can read more, become more healthy, finally try yoga or a fitness group. In 2019 we can sing more, praise more. In 2019…well by now you have gotten the picture. What can add real richness, more valuable than money, to our lives? What richness can we place in the lives of others? As I write, Christmas lies in our wake. Jesus did not come into the world that we would then say that you and I should do nothing for the sake of his arrival. It is not more business, or busyness, or calendartoo-full-ness that I am suggesting. Rather it is more fullness. Do not be afraid of chronos. Time is just a clock counting forward. The question confronting us is about how we employ the fullness of the time before us. Will we use it to serve God? Or something else? It’s an easy choice. 2019 is the perfect time to make it. May New Year’s grace abound,

SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 GENEVA HALL 10-NOON

WMPC provides 70 sack lunches once a month for Raleigh Rescue Mission’s Sunday Sack Lunches program. All we need are willing hands to make and pack the lunches. Everything will be provided. This is a wonderful project for a group, family or individuals.

We will assemble Haiti Health Kits and collect books for WakeUp and Read

Despite the recent rain and snow, site work to prepare for our new building continues. Storm drain infrastructure was installed on the Colonial and Oberlin Road sides of the property. Demolition continues behind the Luther building, soil is being removed to sub-grade level where the new building is to be located, and the foundation around the Knox and Luther buildings is being waterproofed. Rebar for the foundation will be delivered, work will start on the footings, soil nailing for soil stabilization will begin, the elevator pit will be dug and concrete poured for the elevator pit in early January. You can watch the construction progress through the link on the home page of the church’s website.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

We will make every reasonable effort to be open for worship every Sunday morning. However, in the event of extreme weather conditions, we may cancel Sunday School, other activities, and worship services when necessary. Church closings during the week will typically follow the schedule of the Wake County Public School system. On some occasions, the church office will be open when schools are closed. Evening meetings and activities will be cancelled on days when the church office has been closed due to weather conditions. Should weather conditions alter our regular schedule, we will publish notification of cancellations or delays on our website, social media, and on WRAL. We also update the Inclement Weather Voicemail unless telephones are not operating. To access the Weather Box, you may call 919-834-3425, ext 315. Our deacons have organized an Inclement Weather Response Team to help clear pathways and be of assistance to ensure our campus is as safe as possible when services and activities take place during snow or other weather conditions. We cannot guarantee safety during such conditions, therefore we encourage all church members, guests, and staff to observe all safety precautions possible by staying off the roads during icy or especially stormy weather. Should you have any interest in joining the response team or have other questions, please call Andrew Amodei at 919-834-3425, ext. 270.

Ring in the New Year!

SOUNDS ON OBERLIN IS PLEASED TO PRESENT

Celebrating its 41st anniversary season, the Westminster Concert Bell Choir is comprised of students at Rider University’s Westminster Choir College. The ensemble performs on the largest range of handbells in the world – 8 octaves. Many of the bells are made of bronze and range in weight from four ounces to 11 pounds; the Choir also uses the large “Basso Profundo” aluminum-cast bells that are a new phenomenon in handbell ringing. Join us for this wonderful event Sunday, January 13 at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Admission is free! A love offering in support of the Sounds on Oberlin concert series will be collected.
