PASTOR’S NOTE

PASTOR SEIDLER • SENIOR PASTOR • [email protected]

This year at Concordia is going to be a great year. Every year finds its great start in January. In this edition of our Connection, you’ll catch just a glimpse of the many things that are going on in our congregation. I want to challenge you as you read through to consider the ways God is calling you to grow today. What changes are you ready to make? There are a lot of ways to get involved at and through Concordia. Take a half-day, come in and talk with me or one of our ministry staff. Let’s sit down and strategize what will make 2019 great for YOU as a child of God. You can contact me at my email [email protected].

PASTORAL ASSISTANT • [email protected] Happy New Year! Each new year brings new things. The people, places, days, months, jobs, and opportunities may have the same names as in previous years, but they are not the same. We have not experienced all of 2019. Everything this year is new. We humans generally do not fare well in the face of new. We often feel uncomfortable and threatened. The uncertain, unknown, and unrelenting forward progression of time causes many to stumble when we talk about the new. In our discomfort, our faith in Jesus gives us comfort. He has assured us that we belong to him and nothing will snatch us out of his hand. While we don’t know the future, he does. This is the foundation for the assurance that we have. Come what may, whether old or new, God has promised that he will be with us and he will not allow it to separate us from the love we have received in Jesus. 2019 is going to be a great year at Concordia. New ministries, service projects, and even pastors. But the one thing that remains the same is Jesus Christ and his work at Concordia. Keep up the good work as God’s people in this new year!

ADULTS

PASTOR MEGGERS • ASSOCIATE PASTOR • [email protected]

There they were: our CCLS preschoolers lined up before a room full of folks, many old enough to be their grandparents, if not their great-grandparents. It was our Older Adult December Lunch ‘n Learn, a.k.a. “Christmas Party”. As the children sang I watched from the piano bench behind them. I scanned the room and saw not one frowning face. Every face of those 100 or so folks had a huge smile as these children sang about Jesus, specifically His birth, a.k.a. CHRISTMAS. There were other smile-provoking moments that day: Brendan Knorp and Phillip Magness duetting their talented Christmas hearts out on guitar and piano, carols sung by all, and a staff skit that was show-stopping….in a good way. But the children and those smiling adult/older adult faces encapsulate the value of being a congregation of the generations. Led by Pastors Schoedel, Gundermann, and Seidler, Concordia has ministered as a church that loves the Gospel of Jesus and loves to tell it through the generations. Six years ago, I received a phone call that eventually led to my position here as Associate for Adult/Older Adult Ministries. This month we will install a pastor who will exuberantly help Concordia in its ministry to the generations. He might focus a bit more on younger families, but he, like me, like Pastor Seidler, will be Pastor to all Concordia. I hope you will warmly receive Rev. Jacob Schultz as your pastor on Sunday, January 13. January is also the month for our Ageless Generations to take Lunch ‘n Learn on the road. We will take lunch to Rose Hill House on our usual third Thursday of the month. If you are looking for a rewarding way to serve, come and serve with us. Our next edition of “Lutheran Introduction” will begin on Sunday, January 20 at 9:30am. The class is especially for those coming to us from non-Lutheran backgrounds or from unchurched backgrounds. We will meet for six weeks in classroom 101.

THANK YOU TO CONCORDIA’S BAKERS Thank you so much to Concordia’s bakers who graciously and generously made cookies for the homebound and our senior communities. Cookies for the homebound were delivered by communion visitation members and other volunteers. Additional cookies were assembled and distributed to local senior adult living centers by the Ageless Generation MAT. The residents and staff of those facilities were very appreciative of the Christmas joy we shared with them! CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH CONNECTION

WORSHIP ARTS

BRENDAN KNORP • DIRECTOR FOR THE WORSHIP ARTS • [email protected] The month of December is usually a busy one for Concordia, and this past month was no exception. I’m not sure I always appreciate it when I’m in the thick of it, but in this first week of the new year, it feels good to reflect and consider all of the blessings that December brought. Hosting Keith and Kristyn Getty in concert here on Thursday, December 20 was a really big undertaking for our church. Our staff and volunteers did a great job of “divideand-conquer” in order to pull it off. For those of you who were able to attend, I’m certain it was an unforgettable night of music. As with many special events this past month, we could not have done it without the many servant-hearted people who stepped up to make it happen.

In addition to the Gettys, it was a joy to once again have Matt Jansen and the LHSS Wind Symphony, our Kids Song Choir, and the many other musicians who helped lead us in worship in December. Looking ahead… The new year is a great time to start up something new. We are always looking to connect new people to our worship and technology teams. If you are interested in signing in a choir, playing an instrument, or helping with audio and video for worship, please let me know and I’d be happy to give you more information.

CHRISTOPH GRAUPNER CANTATAS The Collegium Vocale of St. Louis is pleased to present a concert of sacred cantatas by Christoph Graupner (16831760) on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at 3:00pm. Christoph Graupner was a celebrated contemporary of J. S. Bach, and a significant Lutheran composer. The voices of the Collegium Vocale will be supported by historical string and wind instruments, including trumpet, oboe, flute, and bassoon. There will be pre-concert remarks by Bruce Carvell, Artistic Director, in the sanctuary at 2:30pm.

KIDSMIN

REBECCA SCHULTZ • CHILDREN’S MINISTRY ASSISTANT • [email protected] In December, the kids of Concordia gave their time and talents to serve others. Using money received from a Thrivent Action Team, we were able to purchase and make 13 tie blankets for the children at St. Louis Children’s Hospital! The kids donated over 50 toys and games for children at the hospital who will not be spending Christmas at home this year. The kids also thoughtfully made cards for the homebound and hospitalized members of Concordia and stuffed stockings for the older adults in the congregation. What a joy to see God’s children working together to benefit others in need!

ONGOING KIDSMIN FAITH-BUILDING PROGRAMS

Sunday KidsMin is a wonderful opportunity each week to learn about Jesus and grow in faith. Our committed teachers look for ways to engage children in the Bible story and encourage them to live out their faith each day. Join us on Sunday!

If your family has not yet participated in Concordia Kids Night or Sunday KidsMin, we invite you to try it out any time! Contact me for more information or visit our website at CKhome.org/children.

EXECUTIVE REPORT

KRISTIN ANDERSON • CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER • [email protected]

MY 15 YEAR REFLECTION

2019 marks my 15th year on staff at Concordia. A job I took on an interim basis for 6 months turned into 15 years. With my corporate business background, it was not my plan to spend most of my career here. Nevertheless, I believe God called me and continues to call me to serve at Concordia. Being a “numbers person”, I am struck by the statistics below. In 15 years:

• • • • •

• $34 million offerings given • 707 baptisms • $34 million spent on ministry • 577 people married • 121 Staff hired • 560 teens confirmed 3 Capital Campaigns and expansions. 620 kids academically and spiritually educated at CCLS (a 24% increase from 2004) 1548 “new” members joined Concordia and are still active today Yearly - Expanded our outreach to the community and the world – Turkey Blessings, Uganda, Belize, Special Needs ministry, Christian Friends of New Americans just to name a few. Yearly - Started new ministries and tried new things

EXCITEMENT FOR 2019 As I look forward to 2019 and beyond, I am more optimistic than ever about our ministry. So many reasons fuel my excitement: • A vibrant Sunday children’s ministry led by more than 40 regular volunteers. • After small changes to Wednesday KidsMin, our regular attendance increased to over 60 kids. • 75 middle schoolers, on average, come every week to our Wednesday Confirmation program. In 15 years, our Confirmation program has never been this robust. • Confirmation students did over 400 hours of community service in the last quarter of 2018 alone. • 100 teens and adults will go with Concordia to the LCMS Youth Gathering, a 25% increase over the last Gathering. • All three major Children and Youth events (VBS, All Youth Retreat, KidsKamp) were led by new staff and lay leadership in 2018. All were successful in terms of participation, event feedback, and new lay involvement. • Turkey Blessing gave out 1200 Thanksgiving meals, feeding 6000 people! This lay-led event grows in participation, donations, volunteers and excitement every year. • Our Special Needs ministry continues to thrive, bringing new families to Concordia. Night to Shine, in February 2019, promises to be a blessed event not only to the people we will serve but also to the 250 volunteers who will serve! • Our Center for Christian Education has progressed every week so far on time and on budget. Contributions are coming in strong with $5.7 million received. • Due to our excellent worship staff, leadership and lay involvement, we were able to put on a high-level Christian concert. The floor and screens were literally shaking from the worship experience and packed house at the Getty Concert last month. • The older adult Christmas party, in the words of several, was “the best yet”. Over 120 people enjoyed a Christmas feast with great fellowship and seasonal songs and entertainment. CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH CONNECTION

OUR SECRET TO SUCCESS We are certainly blessed at Concordia. We are a healthy church by every measure. I have thought a lot about our recent successes and positive 2019 outlook. Two specific reasons come to mind. Elevating Lay Leadership is Paramount to Success – I say often that the best ministry often occurs when lay members are on fire to lead. Turkey Blessings is a perfect example. Second, our ministry, due to the size of our church, requires a lot of volunteers and lay leadership. Staff cannot put on the level of events without significant help. Thank you for your excitement to serve! We Work Better Together – With staff turnover in the last 18 months, we had significant holes to fill. With fewer staff, we all had to step outside of our typical roles and work together; we were unwilling to sacrifice any ministry. (I certainly never learned how to lead a Children’s Ministry in MBA school!) Our roles varied, sometimes leading and sometimes serving as a team member. All of our big events required all of us to help. We have been unbelievably blessed by that experience. What we discovered is we work better together, have more fun, and achieve better outcomes together. I have been blessed to work with some great staff members over my 15 years, but I can say unequivocally, the complement of staff today is the best it has ever been in terms of teamwork, competencies, complementary skill sets, and overall staff culture and comraderie. I certainly, first and foremost, thank God for calling me to serve here these last 15 years. Second, I thank all of you who give your time, talents and treasure to advance ministry and serve His Kingdom. Here’s to a great 2019!

SENIOR YOUTH SEARCH UPDATE During December, the Search Committee interviewed three candidates for the Senior Youth position and still have one more phone interview in early January. The candidates come from varying backgrounds and experiences. Two are Directors of Christian Education (DCEs), one a teacher, and one a theology major at Valparaiso University with great large church youth experience. I would look toward at least one onsite visit in early February where you will have the opportunity to meet the candidate(s) we feel most strongly fits our congregation and future vision. If schedules align, our hope is that the Search Committee will be able to recommend a candidate to the Church Council and then the congregation during the 1st quarter. We are excited about the possibilities these candidates bring. More to come soon!

OUR NEXT STEP UPDATE The masons are hard at work on the stairwells and elevator shaft. By mid-January you will see the steel and large crane arrive on campus. That is when we will really see significant progress and truly appreciate the size of our new Center for Christian Education as steel raises three floors! We have received $5.7 million on $7.5 million in pledges as of the end of December. Thank you for faithfully fulfilling and supporting this project.

2018 FINANCIALS As of this publication, we have not completely closed the books but feel our offerings should meet, or come very close to meeting, our expenses. Next month, we will publish final results. Also, look for communication regarding the 2019 Budget and our Congregational Assembly on January 28th at 7:00pm in the Atrium Room. Together, you supported many projects, missions and agencies during 2018. Hunger Support (Turkey Blessings) – Total Funded: $28,050 This year we switched suppliers and were actually able to distribute 1200 turkey meals at a price even lower than in previous years when we gave away 800-1000 Turkeys. Agency Partners – Total Funded: $40,500 Supporting those Lutheran Agencies who provide spiritual, emotional, or physical care to those within our community. Christ Community International (Uganda) Christian Friends of New Americans Lutheran Assoc. of Special Education Feed My People

Shepherd Center of Webster/Kirkwood Family Shield Kirkcare Gideons

$2,000 $1,500 $1,000 $1,000

2019 PLANS We go into 2019 with great optimism. Although general COM donations are steady each month, we have seen a shift over the last five years to more members supporting specific projects/events versus regular monthly support. Turkey Blessings raised more than $35,250 in 2018. Night to Shine, the prom for individuals with special needs, has raised $17,330 to date and it is still a month away. Concordia responds in big ways to big needs. CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH CONNECTION

SPECIAL NEEDS MINISTRY

JESSICA CRAWFORD [email protected] DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

As we look forward to this new year, we have children and youth with special needs who will be unable to attend programming without the assistance of new volunteers in the “Buddy Ministry.” We have a particular need for buddies who are in high school, college or even adults to serve alongside our older youth with special needs. Who is a buddy? A buddy is anyone with a heart that desires to serve children, youth and adults with special needs and to help them learn about the love of Jesus. Buddies have mostly been middle school to college-aged youth but adults are encouraged to volunteer as well. What does a buddy do? Sometimes all that is needed of a buddy is to be in the same room when their friend requires a little bit of extra encouragement and guidance. Other times, a buddy will work closely with their friend with special needs, providing constant support so they can participate with their peers. Sound intimidating? It shouldn’t! Every volunteer is trained by me before being placed with a child or youth with special needs. No buddy is ever left to “fly solo” until I know they are ready. How much time is required of a buddy? Buddies volunteer during children and youth programing on Wednesday nights and/or Sunday mornings. We also have opportunities for working with the adults on Tuesday evenings. Only want to volunteer during the summer? We need buddies during that time as well! A weekly commitment is appreciated but not required to join the buddy ministry. If you would like to be a part of the buddy ministry or have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 314-374-0682.

DEAF MINISTRY Basic ASL–The First 100 Signs - Classes resume Wednesday, January 16! Join us on Wednesdays, from 7:00-8:00pm in the Library, for American Sign Language (ASL). In this 10-week class, learners will get the chance to engage with the vocabulary in a conversational format and will quickly be able to put it to use on Sunday mornings and out in the community! Class taught by Michelle Hayek, NIC, MICS-5.

PRE-MARRIAGE SEMINAR

LED BY CHARLIE AND DEBBIE DAVIS

Many couples today are spending a great deal of time and money planning for their wedding day, but spending little, if any, time planning for their future marriage. You must pass a test before you receive your driver’s license, yet you can get a marriage license for just a few dollars. A successful relationship requires more preparation than an elaborate wedding! Concordia values the importance of strong Christian families and wants to support and encourage couples who are planning to be married. We require each couple that will be married at Concordia to attend a Pre-Marriage Seminar, led by Charlie and Debbie Davis. This seminar will be based on the PREPARE/ENRICH inventory and will cover marriage expectations, personality issues, communication, conflict resolution, financial management, leisure activities, sexual expectations, children/parenting, family/friends, role relationships and spiritual beliefs. Charlie and Debbie look forward to working with each couple, helping them to prepare for a lifelong marriage. They are trained PREPARE/ENRICH facilitators and have been leading these seminars at Concordia for more than 15 years. The seminar dates for 2019 are Saturday, March 2, June 1 and September 7 from 10:00am-4:00pm. Email Debbie Davis at [email protected] to register.
