A New-New Year’s Resolution ~ Pastor Ericrien “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them and he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.” 2 Corinthians 5: 17-19

Over the years I’ve made a variety of New Year’s resolutions. Most had to do with health related stuff like: eat less chocolate, eat more fruits and vegetables, lose some weight, get some exercise etc. Some had to do with relationships, some with finances and blah blah blah blah blah. In most cases I did pretty well for a few days, maybe even a few weeks but typically I would revert to my “normal self” whatever that is. I’m all for resolutions when fulfilled they help us become the best version of ourselves. The other thing I discovered is that everywhere I go there I am. By that I mean no matter what I eat, no matter my finances, no matter the resolution the one thing I can’t do on my own is make things right with The Lord. The beautiful Scripture above reminds us that God is the one who reconciles us to himself through Jesus. It’s not about ability to be nicer or more friendly or whatever that sets things right with God. It’s God who sets things right with us. Talk about a Christmas gift!

Sunday, January 27th 12:00 pm ~ Noon In the Sanctuary

It’s that message of reconciliation that The Lord has given us to share. That’s what the church does, that who the church is, that’s at the heart of Servant of Christ. It’s all about Jesus--It’s all about what God has done period. It’s God who makes us a new creation. By that I mean god makes us a new creation in his eyes. Yes we are still who we are. We have things we need to change about ourselves and we keep trying and that’s a good thing-but let’s never mistake all the things we can change for the most important thing which only God can change and that is to make us a new creation his eyes. So, my New Year’s resolution for 2019 is to believe and trust and rest in the promise of 2 Corinthians 5:17 and maybe eat a little less chocolate as well. God bless you and see you in church this Sunday! Pastor Eric 1 - SERVANT SPIRIT

Upcoming Preaching Themes Sunday, 1/6/19 ~ Permission to Speak Freely: Where is God in My Praying? Text: Psalm 61:1-3, Colossians 4:2 Theme: There are times in most people’s lives when they wonder if God really hears our prayers. It is easy for our faith to be tossed about by our feelings, but there is more to prayer than just our feelings. Questions to Think About as You Read: How do you “feel” about God when a prayer has been answered? When have you felt like God wasn’t listening to your prayers?

Sunday, 1/13/19 ~ Permission to Speak Freely: I Can Hear You Now! Text: Matthew 6:5-8 Theme: Many of us, especially those who grew up going to church have been praying in some form throughout our lives. Typically we pray when we need God to do something for us. But the real question is this: If we only pray when we need stuff have we missed the most important thing about prayer? Questions to Think About as You Read: What if the real point of prayer had nothing to do with getting God to do stuff? What are most of your prayers about? Sunday, 1/20/19 ~ Permission to Speak Freely: Making Your Minutes Count Text Matthew 6:9-15 Theme: Nobody can spend all day every day praying in a formal setting. However when we think of prayer perhaps there are ways prayer can become more natural in our lives just like breathing comes naturally. As prayer becomes more natural we draw closer to God. Questions to Think About as You Read: How does prayer put life in proper perspective? When and where do you typically pray? Sunday, 1/27/19 ~ Permission to Speak Freely: God is Great! Text: Luke 11:1-13

Bringing Communion to People in Their Homes! Please let Pastor Eric or Pastor Melissa know if there is a Servant of Christ member unable to attend worship due to medical reasons. The Pastors would be happy to bring communion to them in their home. Just call the church office at 763-427-5070.

2 - SERVANT SPIRIT

Theme: There are three basic movements to The Lord’s Prayer. First: God is great. Second: God’s agenda is more important than ours. Three: Then the stuff we pray about. When we understand the basic movement of prayer and can free ourselves from thinking we have to have the right words or formula’s prayer can become more natural. Questions to Think About as You Read: Why do you think The Lord’s Prayer is different in Matthew than it is in Luke? Who do you identify with in today’s reading?

worship & learning Coming this January 26th: “5 Keys to Better Relationships: A Relationship Tune-Up” Workshop We often unintentionally undermine important relationships with our attitudes, words and behaviors. The relationships might include friendships, marriage, co-workers, parent/child and more. The result is primary life relationships are less harmonious and often less fulfilling than they could be if we paid attention to a few simple keys. This workshop is designed for anyone who wants to maximize their personal effectiveness and find greater joy and fulfillment in their relationships. Pastor Eric and Joan Pechauer (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) will lead the workshop from 9-11:30 in the fellowship hall. Childcare will be available. An RSVP would be appreciated so we know how much food to get and how many materials will be needed.

Servant Supper Sunday, January 27th 5-6 pm Servant Supper has continued to be a great experience of sharing with one another and with the guests who come. Our guests have experienced growing deeper in understanding Christ’s love. We have had an average of about 50-70 people each month, which is awesome. This meal is open to everyone. We serve from 5:006:00 p.m. It’s incredible the amount of support and volunteers that have been here each month helping out. Please consider getting involved in this wonderful ministry.

Learn about the meaning of baptism and how to arrange for baptism here at Servant of Christ. We invite all ages to be baptized. Classes are held on the first Sunday every other month at 12 noon in the Family Room at the back of the Sanctuary. The next Baptism class is February 3rd April 7th

You can RSVP to Pastor Eric at [email protected] or Joan at [email protected] or look for the sign up in the Opportunities in the weekly bulletin.

Please get a book from Pastor Melissa before the first meeting and read the first chapter.

A New Year is just around the corner and, while New Year’s Day is overshadowed by Christmas, it is still regarded as an important holiday. Especially for Americans, it reflects our well-known love for all things new. Despite being an arbitrary divi-sion, a new year seems to offer fresh possibilities in our lives. We consider build-ings to be old after a few decades, while Europeans would say the shine is not even off them yet. Advertisements regularly tout “new and improved” formulas and frequently try sell the “product of tomorrow,” not just today. New cars, new cell phones, new celebrities and new fashions all appeal to us.

The flip side of our love of newness, however, is that we know it does not last. The “new car smell” fades quickly. Fads are fleeting and soon seem out-of-date. Before long, new tablets and cell phones feel slow and short on features. Before we know it, we will be well into 2019 and looking toward 2020. Because of that, even as we continue to like what is new, we also long for that which will endure. It is unnerving to feel time passing so quickly. It seems as if our children grow up in the blink of an eye. It is frustrating when new products break down or fail to deliver. Vacations seem to be over before they begin. Maintenance projects need to be re-done almost as soon as they are finished. In the Gospel, though, we find a truth that both offers the allure and overcomes the disappointment of newness. In Revelation 21:5, the risen Christ proclaims, “Behold, I am making all things new.” By the forgiveness of sins, he cleans the slate and gives us a new start. Faith in Jesus grants us new life. Even the power of death will be set aside in the resurrection when a whole new creation will dawn. But notice the grammar in that verse. “I am making” is a present participle. It indicates ongoing action, not a one-time event. It promises that Jesus makes us new again and again. In the section on Holy Baptism, the Small Catechism declares that “the new person (in Christ) should come forth every day and rise to live before God.” Week after week, God pours out His grace on us through Word and sacrament to renew us in faith and devotion. The newness Christ works in us is not temporary nor does it fade away, but is constantly renewed in us by the Holy Spirit. So, whether the year is new or old, whether we are living in the spring of childhood or the winter of our elderly years, whether our circumstances are recently changed or well-established, with Christ we have the best of both worlds. For he assures us every day, “See I am making all things new,” and he will do so through all eternity. New Bible Study Opportunity! When? Beginning Monday January 28th at 7PM and meeting for five consecutive Mondays. Where? In the basement conference room at Servant of Christ. What will we study? The book of Genesis with particular attention to Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and some other favorite people. Nathan Coan will be leading this study. There is a sign up sheet in the outer narthex, but please come even if you haven’t signed up!

ministry & mission SOC is Serious About Mission and Ministry

A lot of the impact you make goes unseen but is incredibly important and makes a huge difference. Because of your Giving, hundreds and hundreds of dollars in gift cards were distributed to the social workers at both Dayton and Oxbow elementary schools. Your gifts made a difference. God bless you!

Advent and Christmas THANK YOU! THANK YOU to everyone who helped make Advent and Christmas so wonderful! From those who brought gifts for “Adopt-aFamily” to the confirmation and high school students and their door-to-door food drive, to the incredible musicians and singers for the Christmas concert, to those who invited family and friends to church, to those who helped usher and serve communion and help with parking and the list goes on and on. junior high ministry ~ senior high ministry from Calvin We hired someone new!

No Confirmation January 2nd AGAPE* leads worship for Junior High Our first week back, Wednesday January 9th, AGAPE* and Joe Davis are coming to lead us in worship. Confirmation and Sr. High will both be in the Sanctuary all night as AGAPE* and Joe Davis perform for us, lead us in a message, and worship with us.

Friday, January 18th – Takeover Night! What is a TAKEOVER night? It’s for all 7th-9th graders to come to SOC and takeover the church. We hang out and do, well, whatever we feel like doing. We’ve done churchwide Hide and Seek/Sardines, watched scary movies, played Vinball (a game that I created that is likely the best, most fun game in the universe), and played other games that people know and love. This is a great time to invite non-church friends to come and check out SOC.

Confirmation Rehearsal & Service Dates 9th graders – MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Rehearsal: Friday, May 17th from 6-8pm for Parents and Students. Pictures for students and small group leaders will be during the rehearsal (parents, bring checkbooks to order pictures that night). Service: Saturday, May 18th at 10am (students arrive at 9:15am). The services usually lasts about 1.5 hours.

No Sr. High January 2nd God is up to something in the Sr. High ministry… God is working in the lives of High Schoolers at Servant of Christ. Students are showing up, sharing, learning, and growing. They are making new relationships, and experiencing new things in their faith. Please keep the Sr. High ministry in your prayers as we are adding Anne Schaefer to our team. Pray that God will work with Anne and me (Calvin) as we continue to work with the Sr. Highers. Pray that God’s will is done in the ministry. And pray for our young people as they seek God inside and outside of our church walls. 8 - SERVANT SPIRIT

As you may or may not know, we recently restructured the youth ministry at Servant of Christ. I will now be the Director of Next Gen Ministries, which covers Jr. High, Sr. High and College. We’ve hired an Associate Director of Next Gen Ministries to help oversee those ministries, with a special focus on Sr. High. Our new hire is Anne Schaefer! Many of you will be familiar with Anne Schaefer since she and her family worshiped and volunteered at SOC for so many years. Anne helped to lead VBS, was a faith guide for Sunday School, Confirmation, and Sr. High; she developed our EQUIP Parent Night program; she was a leader on a few mission trips…I have to say, we couldn’t be more thrilled that Anne is joining our staff here at Servant of Christ. Anne will start in January, and we’ll announce the exciting news a couple of different Sundays. Please take the opportunity to meet her, and help her to learn your name. Our new restructuring will help Anne and I to work closely together to make our youth ministry the best that it’s ever been.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Join us on Wednesday Nights! Senior Highers meet on Wednesday nights for worship, a short message, and discussion groups. There is also plenty of time to hang out and talk or play games because we’re not robots. In our Sr. High group we split up randomly for small groups each week to talk about the Bible verse and the message. Come and try it out! Average night: 5:30-6pm – Pizza in the Fellowship Hall (1st Wednesday of the month we order food & eat downstairs) 6:00-6:15 – Worship with Marc in the Sanctuary 6:15-6:30 – Youth Room for games 6:30-6:40 – Message 6:40-7:25 – Discussion Groups 7:25-7:30 – Announcements and wrap up 7:30-8 – Stay and hang out if you want!
music ministry Who Am I? Happy New Year from the Contemporary Band! We hope you and your loved ones have a most blessed year filled with lots of love and encouragement from the people who surround you. God makes it quite clear how dear we are to Him in the scriptures. He calls us chosen, beloved, friend, called, accepted, saint, forgiven, loved, holy, blameless… the list goes on and on! How incredible that we are so highly regarded by the King of Kings. During the month of January, the band will be sharing the song by Hillsong called “Who Am I” for our prelude. Here are the words to this song of hope and encouragement: Our prayer is that you will grow in your faith during this year. May you remember just how big His love is for you and how cherished you are. Peace, Cathy Yseth
Who am I that the highest King Would welcome me? I was lost but He brought me in Oh His love for me Oh His love for me
Who the Son sets free Oh is free indeed I’m a child of God Yes I am
Who the Son sets free Oh is free indeed I’m a child of God Yes I am
In my Father’s house There’s a place for me I’m a child of God Yes I am
Free at last, He has ransomed me His grace runs deep While I was a slave to sin Jesus died for me Yes He died for me
I am chosen Not forsaken I am who You say I am You are for me Not against me
Congregation Survey Topline of Results: The SOC congregation is highly satisfied (77%) and, compared to benchmarks of other churches who’ve administered this same survey, has a very high satisfaction level. The overall energy in our church is high compared to benchmarks and we have a high level of morale relative to typical churches across the U.S. There’s an opportunity, relative to benchmarks, to increase the value of church activities beyond worship. In addition, there’s an opportunity to appeal to people’s gifts, with about one-third of survey takers indicating they have something to give but they are not sure how to give it. The most important areas of focus for our congregation, based on the survey feedback, are to build on our strengths and continue to:   
Reach new people and invite them into our faith community Reach out to and work to heal those broken by life’s circumstances Create strong and vibrant worship service experiences
All efforts are done in service of our higher goal of making disciples of Jesus. And, we remain committed to our values of Prayer, Biblical Literacy, Spiritual Friendships, Weekly Worship, Giving, and Serving.
The results of these meetings enable God’s work through the church to continue to be both efficient and effective. Servant Schoolhouse Preschool will be taking registrations for the 2019-2020 school year beginning January 14th for SOC members and existing families then on January 22nd for the general public. At Servant Schoolhouse, we offer a balanced curriculum allowing for the growth of young children according to their individual needs and stages of development in five major areas: spiritual, emotional, social, cognitive and physical. We provide a daily routine that integrates a balance of structure and free play, group work and individual learning. The development of a child’s positive self-worth is enhanced through enriching interactive experiences with peers and adults as he or she explores a variety of play situations. Hands-on learning is an integral aspect of the curriculum. Large and small group dynamics are incorporated daily, and activities are designed to encourage imagination. Self-elected activities are promoted so that young children can learn to be independent and competent through making their own choices. Fundamental to the program is the truth that God made the world; Jesus is God’s son; and all people are children of God.
