Letter from Laura To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart. Could it be that the message needed for living comes so simply, in truisms tagged on to another of those endless flow of emails I receive from people needing to make their quota of forwards, so they send me the religious ones, transmitting bawdier, funnier ones to their real friends? The emails themselves are usually okay – often a God sighting, some instance of God once again acting anonymously in our midst. It’s the truisms tagged on the end that can make my skin creep, because I think theology (our talk about God) requires our thinking and folk theology assumes that if we’re just good enough, St. Peter will swing open those pearly gates, and welcome us in to pursue our favorite earthly pastimes: golfing, fishing, drinking beer…….. as an eternal activity, as if God’s function in our lives is to be the perfect butler, make things go our way and in the end, let us set the agenda for eternity as well. Yeah, I do think theology requires our thinking and a lifetime of exploring how it changes us. I believe we are saved by grace through faith alone, not at all by what we do. But this truism makes sense for daily living. To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart. What do you think? Blessings,

Rev. Laura

UPC Discovery Resignation Notice

UPC Discovery Preschool regretfully announces the resignation of Pam Scranton, as Director of UPC Discovery at the end of this school year. Pam, who founded UPC Discovery, wishes to take a break from the day-to-day running of the preschool which will allow her to travel more often with husband Sean. Although Pam won’t be in preschool every day next year, she will be guiding and nurturing the preschool in new roles as she replaces Judy Helm as Chair of the Preschool Committee and also will Co-chair the Christian Education Committee. We have been blessed to find an enthusiastic successor to Pam as Director. Session has approved the hiring of Lora Taylor as the new director. Lora has trained professionally with both Pam and Judy and is a familiar face at UPC Discovery in the summer. She has been a volunteer at the Becoming Young Thinkers Institute every summer, last year serving as our Coordinator of Coaches. Lora’s project work has been featured in books and presented nationally. Lora has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood with a special education endorsement from Bradley University and a Masters in Early Childhood Administration from National Louis University. Lora comes to us from St. Jude School and before that previously taught for 11 years at Northminster Learning Center at Northminster Presbyterian Church. The Preschool Committee celebrates this smooth transition and an opportunity to add even more expertise to our leadership team.

Thank-You Notes I would like to thank all those who have helped with the Snack Packs up to now. Thank you to JAM Printing for supplying bags for the children at Christmas; and to the Hartshorns’ and Lansdownes’ for bringing items from Mid West Food Bank to be included in the Snack Packs. Special thanks to our youth and adults who have helped package the Snack Pack bags. All of your donations of food items are deeply appreciated. With all of your help preparing these bags, we are able to make a difference in many lives each week. Blessings, Theresa Bender, Snack Pack Coordinator I can’t begin to tell you how appreciative I am of all the cards and gifts at Christmas. It was a complete surprise. I am so thankful for my friends at UPC. Bill Bunker We were amazed at the number of Christmas cards Jack received. Thank you so much for taking the time to make them. We also want to thank our dear visiting deacon, Rose Schmollinger, for bringing the cards and the ornament. Her term is over this year (2018) and we will miss her. Jack and Pat Bensing Dear UPC Members, Thank you so much for thinking me at this holiday season. I love the Christmas ornament, the card, and the bag with the ―I Believe‖ printed on it. Just beautiful. Thank you so much again. God Bless you all. Bertha Mueller Thank you for allowing Families Anonymous to meet in your wonderful facility on Tuesday evenings. We are so grateful for your support. FA Members, Central Illinois Families Anonymous I really appreciate the letters, candy, tree ornament and the blue bag. Love, Mary Zentgraf Thank you for the cards, calls and prayers. I love this church. Betty Downard Dear Friends, This is long overdue, but certainly heart felt. Thank you does not seem adequate for all the love and prayers that we have received since June with my surgeries and now the death of our son-in-law. We thank you one and all. It is great to have ―Family‖ support at a time like this. Love and prayers to you all, Jim & Pat Weinkauf

Per Capita Per capita is an amount of money per member that our congregation pays to our larger Presbyterian Church (USA). Through our per capita giving, the Presbytery of Great Rivers with its’ many volunteers -helps congregations with their pastoral transitions -cares for pastoral leaders and their families -trains and supports leaders to in turn lead within their own churches -helps prepare people for service as ministers of word and sacrament -provides money for particular missions This year the per capita apportionment is $34.22 per member. If there are 2 church members living in your household, this is $68.44. We have once again put the blue Per Capita envelopes in the pews for your use. Individuals who pay their per capita outside their annual pledges allow funds in the budget to be freed up for other programs of the church. Last year, through your extreme generosity, we received almost 50% of the per capita given to the presbytery from you. UPC’s per capita responsibility for 2019 is approximately $17,000.00. Any participation we receive to offset amount is gratefully received and acknowledged.

Faith Community Nurse Healthy Hearts

In February we celebrate Valentine’s Day with love and happy hearts. Let us also consider loving ourselves enough to keep our hearts healthy. Approximately 630,000 Americans die from heart disease each year. Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a heart attack, and each minute more than one person dies from an event related to heart disease. The cost for heart disease in the United States is about $200 billion each year. http://www.cdc.gov/dhdsp/data_statistics/fact_sheets/ fs_heart_disease.htm Heart disease is not specific to older adults. It can occur in younger adults as well. This is in part because many of the conditions leading to heart disease are happening at a younger age. Two of these conditions are high blood pressure and obesity. Additional risk factors for heart disease include smoking, high cholesterol, unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity, and diabetes. There are several ways to take care of your heart. One is not smoking, or seeking smoking cessation methods if you do. Another is working with your health care provider to manage conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Eating a diet low in trans-fat, saturated fat and added sugar and sodium and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are healthy choices. Staying physically active for at least 150 minutes per week is also recommended. http://www.cdc.gov/features/heartmonth/index.html Please take a minute to look at the information in the Welcome Center related to heart health. On Sunday, February 17th the Health & Wellness committee will have a display in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us after service for healthy snacks, blood pressure screening, and more information on keeping your heart healthy. Keli Briggs, MSN, RN

Heart Health Sunday

Sunday, February 17th is Heart Health Sunday. All members are invited to Wear Red to worship. The Health and Wellness team will have a special display in the fellowship hall about heart health, blood pressure screenings, and heart healthy snacks.

Valentine Bags The Visiting Deacons will be taking Valentine’s bags to those in our congregation who received Christmas bags in December. Please consider sharing a card or note with them this Valentine’s Day. A list of names as well as Valentine’s bags and Valentine’s cards (the type children use at school) will be available in the Welcome Center January 27th through February 10th. The bags will be picked up by the Visiting Deacons after service on February 10th, so please have yours in the bags prior to service on that day. Thank you

Volunteer Opportunity

There is currently a loving act of kindness volunteer opportunity for the members of UPC. One of our church members is in need of a kidney. If anyone is willing to have testing done to determine a possible match, please contact Keli Briggs in the church office or via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this request.

Recycling Opportunities

Hard plastic bottle cap lids are now being collected in the church office. Pop, water, milk, juice, detergent, shampoo, pill bottle caps, any type of hard plastic cap can be collected. These lids are collected and then sent to a center to make plastic park benches for places that have no funding for such projects. Pam Madden has helped us facilitate this. A white collection container is in the office suites for easy drop off. We also collect ink cartridges. They are taken to Office Depot/Max where we are given $ rewards to purchase items. This can be a big savings to the church in office supplies. We have a container inside the office suites for easy drop off.
