JANUARY 21, 2018

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME O SING A NEW SONG TO THE LORD; SING TO THE LORD, ALL THE EARTH. IN HIS PRESENCE ARE MAJESTY AND SPLENDOR, STRENGTH AND HONOR IN HIS HOLY PLACE. cf. PSALM 96:1,6 The Ninevites heard the preaching of Jonah and repented of their evil ways (1), thus experiencing the Lord’s compassion (Ps). Do we repent when we hear the preaching of Jesus (3)? Do we invest our lives in the world rather than in God’s Kingdom (2)? FIRST READING — JONAH 3:1-5,10 The Ninevites turn from their evil way in response to Jonah’s message. RESPONSORIAL — PSALM 25 Teach me your ways, O Lord. SECOND READING — 1 CORINTHIANS 7:29-31 The world in its present form is passing away. GOSPEL — MARK 1:14-20 Jesus proclaims, “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The new disciples abandon their nets and follow him.

T REASURE S T FROM OUR RADITIONS

One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, "Ons Lieve Heer op Solder." What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and "deCatholicized" them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed "Old Church" by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work "hiding" St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It's a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there's no need for any of them to hide in the attic. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ALMIGHTY EVER-LIVING GOD, direct our actions according to your good pleasure, that in the name of your beloved Son we may abound in good works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out "Repent!" before he calls his new followers. "Come after me," Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today's Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL: "Why do I choose St. Joseph Catholic School for my child?"

Jay Hiebert & Dr. Mary Wyandt-Hiebert SJCS parents since 2016 With a motto of „I will try my best every day to Learn, to Love others, and to Act like Jesus‰, why would we not choose St. Joseph? Our child receives a top-rated education in a nurturing environment with Christ at the center of every experience. On our daughterÊs first day of school, we were astounded by the welcoming and warm reception received as administration, faculty, and staff greeted us by name. Never in our combined 45 years of education (K-college) have we had such an experience. This was only the beginning of reinforcements that we made the right decision for our daughter to begin her educational journey with St. Joseph.

TERCER DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

CENTERING PRAYER CONFERENCE March 9-10 Sequoyah Methodist

Our lives are a journey and though God has always been present, it does not truly begin until we practice presence with God. We’ve gone through the motions, we receive the sacraments, attend Mass, join an organization, and support the church, we stay busy. We are admonished to run the race, told that heaven is within us, find the peace that passes understanding, but we still struggle with loving our neighbors… Life’s demands can keep us on the surface or we can choose to let silence into our day and begin the journey from head to heart. Nothing changes and everything changes. Join Fr. Matthew Flatley, Coordinator of Contemplative Outreach of Central Missouri, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9, for a two-day conference on “The Human Condition and Centering Prayer as Divine Therapy with an Introduction to Centering Prayer.” The conference will be held at Sequoyah United Methodist Church, 1910 N Old Wire, Rd in Fayetteville. Conference cost is $35 and includes breakfast and lunch Saturday. Pre-register by February 1 and receive $5 discount. More information available from [email protected] or call 503-866-8104 or 479-466-4871. Fr. Matthew Flatley has had a daily practice of Centering Prayer for over 20 years. He has served as the Coordinator of Contemplative Outreach of St. Louis and also serves on the National Faculty of Contemplative Outreach, Ltd. on the team that presents “The Living Flame Program.”

Stepping Stones St. Joseph Master Plan Phase III Progress

Preliminary work on freestanding church As part of the Core Team’s efforts to collect input on the design of our new church, there will be two formal opportunities for those wishing to give input -Focus Groups and a Parish-wide Survey. Rich Oloffson, a parishioner, will be leading Focus Group Events in English the last two weeks in January. Dates for Focus Groups in Spanish will be coming soon. Data collected during Focus Groups will be compiled and used in writing a survey that will be available this spring in English and Spanish for ALL St. Joseph parishioners to give their input.

Below is the link, if you are interested in participating in a Focus Group: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ChurchFocusGroupsSurvey The link was also sent out via the Grapevine and Flocknote and is embedded in this week’s bulletin on the Parish website for you to follow. It will take you to a questionnaire that will ensure that we have a balanced representation of the St. Joseph community participating in this input phase. Focus Groups will last two hours and there is a short “Homework Activity” to complete prior to the session. This assignment involves gathering 5-10 photos of church features that you like/dislike. To best capture your comments in your own words, our team may take video and photos of the group discussion. Anything shared, collected, photographed, and/or recorded may be used by the Parish in future reports, presentations, summaries, and other forms of media. Focus Groups will be conducted here at St. Joseph on: Thursday, 01-18-18 Saturday, 01-20-18 Monday, 01-22-18 Saturday, 01-27-18 8:30-10:30am 9:30-11:30am 6:30-8:30pm 9:30-11:30am 11:00am-1:00pm 12:30-2:30pm 12:00-2:00pm 1:30-3:30pm Once all data has been complied, results will be shared in our Stepping Stones columns and other parish media.
