TOUCHSTONES The Rev. Ned Wight

Strategic Possibilities Way back in October, I preached about “Embracing Our Mission.” Members of the Transition Team with whom I’ve been meeting regularly over the past two-and-a-half years suggested that I outline in this column the suggestions I made in that sermon. I do so by way of “priming the pump”—to stimulate some energy around dynamic new ways for us to live out our mission as a UU congregation with talented and creative people, an extraordinary 100-acre campus, substantial financial assets, and a deep longing to leave the world better than we found it. We’re now in the middle of January—seven-and-a-half months before I end my service as Interim Senior Minister. It is hoped that a Developmental Minister will join the Ministry Team after I leave, to help the congregation outline strategic priorities and work to fulfill them. Before I leave, I would like to promote discussion of some of the possibilities I put forth in October—as well as new ones others might suggest that are worth exploring with the Developmental Minister. Here are the five “mission-worthy” possibilities I put forward: 1. Building upon the asset of “beautiful grounds,” consider a Ministry of Ethical Stewardship of Our Land in the 21st Century. Just as the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood have developed a “Land Ethic” statement to guide the way they use their land as a sacred trust for future generations, we might actively manage our 100 acres under our own set of “land ethic” principles, instituting demonstration projects for sustainability, for ecological education for children and adults, for protecting our aquifer, and exploring partnership with our neighbors at the Greentree Foundation. In this time of growing concern about climate change and climate justice, this initiative could be transformative. 2. Building upon our assets of “spacious building” and “caring community,” consider a Special Ministry to Seniors. As we all grow older, some of us—members and non-members alike—are concerned about arresting physical or cognitive decline, about Continued on page 2 1

loneliness, about retaining a sense of purpose. We could partner with community organizations with expertise in programming for seniors to create an array of services for members of our congregation and the wider community to address some of these concerns. There is an obvious need—and the potential of utilizing two of our major assets—buildings and caring community—to meet this need seems promising.

Sunday, February 10, 2019, 11:00 AM Living Hope, Living Justice The Rev. Mary Katherine Morn We are honored to welcome the President and CEO of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). Since UUSC’s founding, Unitarian Universalists have been fundamental to UUSC’s work advancing human rights. With our shared values under threat, there is an even louder call to collaborate and even more that we can accomplish together. Rev. Morn will share a sermon about how we can come together, with hope, to advance justice in the face of some of today’s greatest human rights challenges. Also, at the end of the service, the RE dragon will make its annual appearance for the Lunar New Year.

3. Building upon our assets of “commitment to UU ideals” and “community outreach,” let’s consider a Ministry of Restorative Practices. Suppose we were to draw upon UU Principles and theology to develop model programs and strategies of restorative justice as alternatives to the systems of retributive justice— punishment and isolation—that dominate in our larger culture. Could we not deal more effectively with conflict both within and outside the congregation? 4. Building upon our assets of “commitment to UU ideals,” “community outreach,” “social justice,” and “spacious buildings,” consider a Ministry of Racial Equity and Inclusion. The Racial Justice Task Force of the Social Justice Committee is actively deepening relationships with communities of color on Long Island. By reaching out to forge these relationships, we may discover new opportunities to advance our commitment to positive social change on Long Island—one of the most segregated areas in the country. Might we significantly expand our commitment to racial equity and inclusion? 5. And finally, building upon our “commitment to UU ideals” and “community outreach,” consider a Ministry of Solidarity and Partnership with other UUs. UUCSR already has strong relationships with leadership at the UUA and other UU institutions. Some in our congregation have long expressed concern about our fellow UU congregations on Long Island: today, only three of the 11 have full-time ministers, yet all have rich histories in their local communities. How might we ensure that there is a powerful UU presence across the island? How might we pool and leverage resources to ensure that UU outreach covers both Nassau and Suffolk counties? Each of you has your own ideas about bold ways we might make a difference in people’s lives in the years ahead. Let’s take some time in the next six months—and beyond—to give voice to those ideas—to explore them through discussions in our committees, at UU Café, at small group meetings, and at congregational gatherings. Today, more than ever, the world needs the values and the vitality that we embody as a community of faith. Let’s come together to chart a course for our future that will enable us to meet that need. Nothing we can do will be more important to our future than identifying possibilities that capture our imaginations, fire our hearts, and animate our spirits. Cheer and blessings, Rev. Ned The Quest

LIFESPAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS

India Harris, Youth and Young Adult Program Coordinator

Ripples in the Pond of Faith On the first Sunday of the New Year, seven volunteer religious education teachers and I gathered in the Chapel before classes for centering and worship. I believe this to be important since our teachers can’t attend services regularly. We began with the reading, “We Arrive Out of Many Singular Rooms,” spoke our hopes for the New Year into meditative silence, and proceeded out singing, “Love Will Guide Us.” The whole worship lasted mere minutes, but for those in attendance, it was a meaningful pebble dropped into the pond of faith. The ripples carried RE teachers, Ruth O’Shea and Debbie Kahn, into their classrooms, where they shared the experience with our ten 7th Graders and 23 members of our Senior Seminar youth group respectively. More ripples sent Claudia Barbey, Bill Kahn, Judy Wylie-Rosett, Frank Teltsch, and Niha Malcomson through the RE hallway where they told fellow teachers of the profound moment. The ripples returned to the Chapel the following Sunday with a gathering of 12. I am so gratified that our new tradition of pre-RE centering is bringing together teachers from nursery through high school, and one day I hope to see the ripples bring our whole team of 73 through the Chapel doors. Did you know it takes 73 fantastic volunteers, staff, and committee members to make the RE Program happen every Sunday? It is actually many more than that. 73 is the number of people who have honored us by serving in particular roles week-to-week. There are dozens more who support our program as needed, from the friendly faces you see at the RE Welcome Desk, to the helping hands who decorate and run activities at the Halloween and Holiday Decorations Parties, and the caring hearts who assist with big classroom projects like the Sukkah in Grade 3 and the Grade 1 snail parade!

Fun & Games In congregational life, there are unique opportunities to bring everyone together in community. We have multigenerational worship services, a congregational retreat, member events, ceremonial rites of passage, and celebrations of rites of passage. While it probably isn’t possible to see every member of the congregation on Sunday mornings, gatherings held week and weekend nights and holiday weekends allow for us to have deeper connection beyond our family and peer groups. This past summer, my neighborhood held a community game night. A friend suggested that we go, as she’d been before and had a great time. At first, I felt hesitant; I thought it might only be for families or young adolescents, but I decided to check it out. We entered what was a community theater space, and as we were signing in upstairs, I heard loud party music playing downstairs. Downstairs, there were groups of adults, youth, and children jumping double dutch, dancing, and enthusiastically playing card as well as board games at every table. We joined right in; dancing and playing games until the event was over. This event provided a fun and safe space for neighbors to get to know one another while utilizing an important space in the neighborhood in a creative way. Our institutions serve the purpose of bringing us together as a community in more innovative ways than they might have ever imagined. What are some creative approaches that you have for how we might use our congregational space? This month, we’re having our first Game Night at UUCSR. I hope you’ll join us! Friday, January 25, 2019 6:30 PM | Room 6 Game Night Fun and Fellowship for All Ages Child care and pizza provided. To register, please contact India Harris at [email protected] or 516.472.2943

Through their generosity of time and spirit, all of these wonderful people drop pebbles into our pond of faith, sending ripples of grace and giving through each other, through our children and youth, across our faith community, and beyond. The more pebbles we drop, the closer we get to creating a wave of love and commitment, a wave to transform our world in harmony. Won’t you drop a pebble into the pond of faith today? You may be surprised where the ripples lead. 4

Thanks to everyone for supporting Midnight Run this Winter!

Let’s Pass HALT This Year! Why were eight UUCSR members and friends climbing into the congregational van in the pre-dawn chill of Tuesday, January 15? We were eager to get to Albany to join dozens of other advocates from across the state to continue to pressure legislators to pass the HALT Solitary Confinement Act. UUCSR advocates included Jim Ansel, Maria Ceraulo, Claire Deroche, Kathy de Vos, Chuck Fenimore, and Katie Schall, joined by Jayette Lansbury of NAMI, and Kim Eliano, Chaplain at Rikers Island. Since 2013, members of the Social Justice Committee have been working to educate about the need to end prolonged solitary confinement and advocating for the passage of the Humane Alternatives to Long Term (HALT) Solitary Confinement. The bill passed the Assembly but never went to the floor of the Senate for a vote. With changes in the make-up of the Senate, 2019 may be the year that we see this legislation become law.

SOCIAL JUSTICE ANNOUNCEMENTS Wednesday, January 23, 2019 Together to End Solitary Confinement, Worship Room, 6:30– 7:30 PM. Advocates for ending prolonged solitary confinement gather on the 23rd of every month, remembering those who are in segregated confinement 23 hours a day. This month, after our vigil, we will explore alternatives to solitary confinement through the video experiences of individuals incarcerated in the Colorado State Prison and hear Rick Raemisch, Executive Director, Colorado Department of Corrections explain “Why I Ended the Horror of LongTerm Solitary in Colorado's Prisons.” See the flyer for details. Saturday, January 26, 2019 Cooking for Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) Guests, 9:00 AM –12:30 PM, Main Kitchen. Meals cooked will be delivered to three shelters run by the INN. Contact John Ryan at 516.487.5571 for information. Monday, January 28, 2019 SJ Mental Health Subcommittee Meeting, 4:00–6:00 PM, Veatch House Conference Room. This subcommittee works to eliminate the stigma of mental illness. New members are being recruited so if you’re interested, please come to this meeting with your ideas and suggestions. Tuesday, January 29, 2019 Everything You Wanted to Know About Transgender, NonBinary, and Intersex People…But Were Afraid To Ask! Tuesday, January 29, Art Gallery, 7:00–9:30 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Program begins at 7:00 PM. This is a free and fact-filled forum that will put an end to misinformation, confusion, and fear! Presented by Gender Equality New York and sponsored by the Social Justice Committee of UUCSR. For further information go to www. facebook.com/genderequalityny and page 11 of this Quest. OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING

Our day in Albany began with a press conference at a replica solitary cell set up between the Legislative Office Building and the entrance to the Capitol Building. This cell was staffed all day by HALT supporters, including survivors of solitary confinement. Meanwhile, other advocates travelled the halls for meetings with legislators. We gathered at 2:30 PM for a wrap up meeting to share our experiences and hear from campaign leaders about next steps. The Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (CAIC) has plans for several more advocacy days in Albany, including times when we will join other groups calling for a full package of reforms to address problems with our NYS justice system. For more information about HALT Solitary go to www.nycaic.org If you’d like to join us on the next trip to Albany, please contact Social Justice Coordinator Claire Deroche. Let’s all work to end torture in New York State prisons and jails this year! January 23, 2019

Veatch Visionaries: Ferguson Commission Leader Preaching on Veatch Sunday, January 27 The Reverend Starsky D. Wilson of St. Louis will speak on Veatch Sunday. In this time of so much division and fear, Rev. Starsky will remind us how we can build community. He will reflect on how the criminalization of marginalized people separates us from one another, and what we can do about it. Rev. Starsky was the co-chair of the Ferguson Commission, formed by Missouri’s Governor in 2014 following the murder of Michael Brown. In 2015, the Ferguson Commission released the groundbreaking Forward Through Ferguson: A Path Toward Racial Equity Report, calling for sweeping changes in policing, the courts, child well-being and economic mobility. Rev. Starsky is pastor of Saint John's Church and President and CEO of Veatch grantee, the Deaconess Foundation. Rev. Starsky is also Chair of Veatch grantee, the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Ben Bortin, Membership and Volunteer Coordinator Natalie Johnsen It’s a delight to welcome Natalie Johnsen as a Member of this congregation, as of this past November 4, 2018. Natalie grew up in Dryden, NY, just outside of Ithaca. Since then, career pursuits have taken her all over the country, but particular favorite communities have been Salem, MA, and Weston, VT. In the latter community, she met her husband as they participated in the summer Weston Playhouse Theater. Happily for us, she moved to Long Island in 2012. Natalie had no particular formal religious upbringing, but in her high school years, developed an interest in earthbased spirituality and goddess religion. She joined the UU Society of Salem, MA, where she was a member for several years. Reading the Principles and Purposes of Unitarian Universalism for the first time, she realized they beautifully mirrored her own values. She heard of this congregation through friendly associations with people who were members here. A major passion for Natalie is theater, and she is also an avid reader, especially of historical fiction and “speculative fiction” (science fiction and even fairy tales). She also knits and quilts, and is an enthusiastic mushroom “forager.” I think you will really enjoy getting to know her. Welcome again, Natalie!

This article reflects our stewardship of the earth and our commitment to the Seventh Principle. Interested in a CSA?

The Real Crisis: Climate The proposed Border Wall between the United States and Mexico is viewed as a crisis by the current Trump administration. In our opinion, it is not, but will cause a real crisis in the United States as dealing with climate disasters becomes untenable. By taking funds from the Army Corps of Engineers, the fixers of climate disasters, as suggested, people’s lives will be impacted by more suffering and hardships. The Army Corps of Engineers is a Federal agency under the Department of Defense composed of 37,000 civilian and military personnel. Their job is to engineer, design, construct and manage oversight of water resources, safeguard and develop projects to foster sustainability, and restore navigation channels, levees, and beach barriers after storms. These efforts will be thwarted. A barrier, such as a Border Wall, would also alter the sustainability of animals that cross between the countries and hurt people who live there. Eminent domain used to acquire their property would abuse their rights of free access.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) provides an opportunity to purchase a share of produce grown on a small local farm. If there is significant interest, full and half shares of produce would be delivered to UUCSR. Participants must be available to pick up on appointed day and time each week during the growing season. The price will depend on what farm is chosen and what size share you choose. Please contact Sharyn Esposito ([email protected] or 516.472.2960) to express your possible interest by January 30, 2019. All members, staff, and surrounding community are welcome. Thank you. Green Sanctuary Committee

The Green Sanctuary Committee and Social Justice Committee at UUCSR Present

The undocumented immigration issue is one that should be solved politically by our Congress as well as the climate crisis. Currently, there is a growing grassroots climate mobilization movement. This means we have an advocacy working toward large-scale political action against global warming and the ensuing catastrophes. These activists believe that the crisis of climate change requires a national economic effort on the scale of the American mobilization of the home front during World War II. In other words, they predict a climate emergency that poses a risk to all life on earth. The breakdown of our climate system means we should not divert funds for a Border Wall, but face the real crisis by investing funds in a safe-climate economy. This should be part of a Green New Deal proposed by newly elected members of Congress. We should start to support clean renewable energy over fossil fuels in order to get to zero emissions. Science indicates we need a drawdown by 2030, or this existential threat will be real. Climate mobilization organizers and chapters are beginning to grow in cities throughout the United States. They are planning for climate disasters and working to stop them. Therefore, we have a chance to get better environmental laws passed and put our money behind an issue that will have positive results. We hope there will be more advocates investing in the fight for our climate not in divisive canards. Elaine Peters for the Green Sanctuary Committee January 23, 2019

Explore the UU World Outside Our Congregation’s Walls The Denominational Affairs Committee (DAC) is in need of congregants to partner with Unitarian Universalist affiliates such as LIAC (Long Island Area Council); CER (Central East Region); UUUNO (Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office); or Partner Church in Csiksereda, Transylvania. You would serve as DAC liaisons to these interesting and important affiliates. This could be a meaningful way of serving UUCSR while expanding your horizons on Unitarian Universalism in the larger world. For further information, please contact Robin Finnan-Jones, DAC chair at [email protected] or attend a future DAC meeting on Tuesdays, February 5, March 5, May 7 and June 4, 2019 at 7:30 PM.

The Caring Committee provides meals for congregants during illnesses and other periods of need. We are in the process of developing a group called Caring Chefs. The hope is that this group will cook at UUCSR on a regular basis, much like those cooking for the INN, so we can store food in our freezer and have it ready for whenever it is needed.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE Betty Nuxoll, Chair

The Worship Committee is completing its review of summer Worship Services and is seeking recommendations. In recent years, we have included a cross section of UU ministers from other congregations, UU interns and seminarians, and speakers from other religious traditions. Guest preachers have been recommended by the UUCSR ministers, Worship Committee members, and members of UUCSR. If in your travels to conferences, retreats, or other congregations you have encountered preachers you admired, please forward your recommendations to Worship Committee chair Betty Nuxoll ([email protected]) or to committee liaison Lea Titza (ltitza@ uucsr.org). Nominations are needed by Tuesday, February 4, 2019.

WG-Women Talk Daytime Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 12:00 PM The topic will be Current Events.

MILESTONES Sometimes... we need to be explicit with our permission and encourage the sharing of milestones. In Worship and through our Quest newsletter, we mark the milestones in the lives of our members. Milestones include the celebration of rites of passage: ceremonies of naming & dedication for infants and children, coming of age, weddings, and memorial and funeral services. But there are many other meaningful moments that can be shared and honored within the religious community. Milestones include the events that bring us joy, call forth our prayers, challenge us, bring sorrow, and inspire hope. They are everything from getting a first driver’s license, to a first or next job, from moving into a home, as well as the need for support when facing the loss of a job or having to move from a beloved home. We hope you’ll want to share your joy at welcoming a child or grandchild, your hopes when moving into retirement, your pride when marking an anniversary of recovery from addiction, and more. We hope you will choose to share your milestones with the members and ministry team here at the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock. Milestones should be directed to the Assistant to the Ministers, at [email protected], 516.472.2941.
