PARISH ROADMAP FOR EVANGELIZATION & DISCIPLESHIP Taking the next step forward as a parish community to more deeply live out evangelization

Our Mission: Be Disciples. Make Disciples. In welcoming all, we form disciples who know, love, and serve God and neighbor.

Who is a disciple? A disciple welcomes God's people, encounters Jesus Christ, grows in Jesus Christ, serves God's people, and shares the Gospel.

“COME, FOLLOW ME.” - MT. 4:19 | “GO, MAKE DISCIPLES.” - MT. 28:19 Our Vision for Evangelization & Discipleship As Catholics, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. Making disciples is called evangelization. Evangelization is at the heart of all our ministries at Good Shepherd because evangelization is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus Christ. Moving forward as a parish community, let’s reflect together on the five characteristics of being a disciple: welcome, encounter, grow, serve, and share. What is the purpose? We are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a greater urgency in living out our Catholic calling of evangelization. Farewell & Best Wishes Good Shepherd is saying farewell to Joshua Bitting and Tracy Vecchio. As Director of Evangelization, Joshua guided GSCC in formulating our Parish Roadmap for Evangelization and Discipleship. As Coordinator of Disciples, Tracy worked alongside our ministries to assist in carrying out the five characteristics of disciples. We are grateful for Joshua and Tracy’s dedication, and we are excited to keep building on the foundations that they have assisted us in cultivating. Joshua will now be working as a Program Director at the John Paul II Foundation for Life and Family in Houston. Tracy will be working for a local non-profit organization as Education & Marketing Manager, while remaining a parishioner here at Good Shepherd. Thank you, Joshua & Tracy, for your faithful service. We pray for all the best in your new positions!

ANOINTING OF THE SICK Sacrament of Healing January 27 “Today we celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in the continuation of the Lord’s ministry of compassion. The God of all consolation chose and sent his Son into the world for the healing of our body, soul and spirit. Jesus identified with the sufferings of the sick. Through the grace of the Holy Spirit, the oil poured out on us is a gift of soothing ointment and God’s tender care for his people. This sacrament of healing is our support in weakness and our comfort in suffering to deliver us from all afflictions of mind and body.” Father Richard THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD World Day for Consecrated Life February 2 “Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, 40 days after the birth of Christ. From the Manger in Bethlehem, Mary and Joseph presented the Child to God in the Temple of Jerusalem. Formerly this feast was called the Purification of our Lady, but as early as 386, it was known as the ‘Meeting’ of Jesus in the Temple with Simeon, who blessed Jesus, and Anna, who praised God. Today candles may be blessed and carried in procession at ‘Candlemas’ to honor the saving Incarnation of Christ, Light to the nations.” Father Richard THE BLESSING OF THROATS Honoring Saint Blase February 3 “At the end of Mass today we celebrate our devotion to Saint Blase with the Blessing of Throats. He was Bishop and Martyr in Fourth Century Armenia, and is held in special honor by the Eastern Church. For decades Catholics in the United States have sought the blessing of Saint Blase for physical healing. Catholics seek the intercession of all the Saints because of their holy lives and legendary acts. We invite you to receive this special blessing as a sign and example of God’s power for all those who give themselves entirely to Jesus.” Father Richard PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

Third Order Regular: Franciscan Rule and Life Chapter IV: The Life of Chastity for the Sake of the Kingdom 14. Let the brothers and the sisters keep in mind how great a dignity the Lord God has given them because He created them and formed then in the image of His beloved Son according to the flesh and in His own likeness according to the Spirit. Since they are created through Christ and in Christ, they have chosen this form of life which is founded on the words and deeds of our Redeemer. 15. Professing chastity for the sake of the kingdom of heaven, they are to care for the things of the Lord and they have nothing else to do except to follow the will of the Lord and to please Him. In all of their works the love of God and all people should shine forth. 16. They are to remember that they have been called by a special gift of grace to manifest in their lives that wonderful mystery by which the Church is joined to Christ her spouse. 17. Let the brothers and sisters keep the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ, ever before their eyes. Let them do this according to the exhortation of St. Francis who held Holy Mary, Lady and Queen, in highest veneration since she is the virgin made church. Let them also remember that the immaculate Virgin Mary, whose example they are to follow, called herself the handmaid of the Lord. For information on vocations, contact Fr. Have You Lost a Loved One?

Experience Christ’s Loving Care In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience winters in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, a cancer diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support. If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, to support and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!

Thursdays | 7:00 - 9:00pm | Feb. 21 - May 23 No session on Holy Thursday, April 18 GriefShare is a special weekly seminar and support group designed to help you rebuild your life. We know it hurts, and we want to help. Learn more and register at gscc.net/griefshare $15 cost for materials

They also prepare correspondence at times and places when it is most convenient for them. “Simply writing a note or sending a card or a Scripture verse once a month, or even writing a brief reflection on a recent homily you enjoyed, makes such a positive difference in the life of an inmate,”

Feb. 4 - 9, 2019 | Adult Mission | El Paso-Mexico Border WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A FEW MORE MISSIONERS TO JOIN OUR TEAM! Good Shepherd’s Mission Ministries invites you to a Border Awareness Experience. We will hear of the efforts of our local Catholic diocese, of legal aid agencies, human rights groups, federal judges, and the U.S. Border Patrol to treat the immigrants among us humanely, with the dignity they inherently deserve as human beings, created in the likeness of God. To learn about the trip logistics, including who can go, where we will stay, and cost, contact Mission Coordinator Tere Martin at [email protected].

Join Us in Houston!

Tell me about your ministry and what your ministry does. “I have the honor of serving on the Parish MissionOutreach Council. Webster defines outreach as ‘the extending of services or assistance beyond current or usual limits’ – a very appropriate description for what we do. Over the years, the Council has identified a number of organizations to support. These include the Good Shepherd ChristCare Program, Cassata Catholic High School, Catholic Charities Fort Worth, Community Enrichment Center's Open Arms Project, GRACE, MidCities Care Corps, SafeHaven of Tarrant County, St. George Catholic School, St. John's Baby World and Union Gospel Mission Tarrant County. Our mission is to help our parishioners live out God’s call to serve the poor, the homeless, victims of domestic violence, lowincome families, seniors and the elderly, and other people in need.” Why did you join this ministry? “In 2009, the Holy Spirit called me to go on a parish youth mission trip to Honduras. After the trip, I joined the parish mission council. This calling led me to join the Outreach Council. After all, Outreach is Mission in our own backyard.” How have you grown in Christ through your ministry? “When you see the face of Jesus on the children that Catholic Charities serves, the students at Cassata High School and the families that St. John’s Baby World is serving (among many other people), it is impossible to not feel closer to Christ.” How have you served others through your ministry? “I serve as an Ambassador for Catholic Charities and have had the privilege to invite parishioners to attend ‘Know Poverty Hours’ and other Catholic Charities gatherings. I also have had the honor to accompany volunteers to spend a Saturday morning helping at Cassata High School on the bi-annual parish service days. Bottom Line: Being involved with our parish Outreach Ministry is easily one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done.”

June 23 - 29, 2019 | Family & Adult Mission | Houston We will once again travel to Houston, where we will help fellow Texans recover from the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Though the hurricane first affected Houston two years ago, the devastation still continues to require rebuilding efforts. Full trip details will be available soon. If you are interested, please mark your calendars and contact Tere Martin at [email protected].

Upcoming Retreat for Men

Christ Renews His Parish is a spiritual renewal weekend designed to help individuals grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and with others in their faith community. It is an excellent opportunity for Catholics to renew their understanding of the basic beliefs and traditions of their faith. It is a time to relax, pray, think about our priorities, and refresh ourselves spiritually. More importantly, it allows you the opportunity to examine, rediscover, and intensify your personal relationship with Christ.

What is it like to attend a CRHP retreat? Testimonies from the Men’s Retreat:

This is a two-day retreat unlike any you have previously attended. Parishioners share with one another the ways they have found meaning, hope, peace, and love in their lives. They even share laughs along the way. The experience is personal, inspirational, and fulfilling. Many participants feel that the weekend experience has been among the most powerful and positive of their lives. The atmosphere is casual and you will begin friendships that will last a lifetime. Many of your fellow parishioners, who have previously attended, will be happy to share their experience.

“During the CRHP retreat, I found out that I was not alone facing the challenges that I thought were uniquely mine.” - Victor

Men’s Retreat: February 9 - 10, 2019 For more information or to register, visit gscc.net/crhp

“The CRHP weekend was exactly what I needed to help me get back on my faith path. It was a chance to renew my connection with Christ.” - Kyle “I attended the CRHP retreat to increase my faith. I ended up finding 30 new friends all struggling to do the same.” - Don

“God answered my prayer. When I teetered on going to CRHP or not, He put His favorite advocate in my path one morning. I am so glad I listened and obeyed! The experience confirmed my desire to be the spiritual leader He wants me to be at home, at work, and in the community. Deep down I was ready, and He knew it!” - Bob

A disciple GROWS in Jesus Christ. We accompany all who have made a commitment to follow Christ as intentional disciples, walking with them and encouraging them to grow in divine intimacy with God. Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

Statement of Faith Although baptized Presbyterian at 9, I was not raised as a Christian. By high school, I was a practical atheist. Nevertheless, friends invited me to a Christian youth camp. While there, I prayed one sarcastic prayer: “If you’re there, God, show me.” Graciously, He answered, and I believed. As an adult, I could never find a congregation that had liturgy, imminence, reverence, and a sense of continuity. Our services at many were said to be patterned after the early Church, but still seemed modern and trendy. I began reading the Apostolic Fathers to determine once and for all what the early Church believed. It was immediately obvious the early Church didn’t resemble my experience. Shockingly, it was Catholic. It believed the Holy Eucharist was the actual body and blood of Christ. I was amazed that I had never seen this before. I began attending Mass, and through God’s grace knew the literal presence of Christ was there. I joined RCIA and didn’t have many objections to overcome. Once you understand that we become, as St. Peter said, actual partakers of the divine nature in the Eucharist, there are no options to consider. You cease your wandering and come home. *Todd came into full communion with the Church at the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, December 22, 2018. CATHOLIC INQUIRY Monday Evenings | 7:00pm | Rooms 2 & 3 RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the process whereby those who are not Catholic can explore the teachings of the Catholic faith.
