Building the Family of God -Ephesians 2:19-22 First Presbyterian Church is a reformed, confessional, ordinary means of grace congregation that exists to exalt God, edify and equip the saints, evangelize the lost, and extend the love, mercy, and mission of Christ locally and around the world. Reformed: We find our roots in the 16th century Protestant Reformation and affirm the five solas of the Reformation: Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone), Sola Fide (Faith Alone), Solus Christus (Christ Alone), Sola Gratia (Grace Alone) and Soli Deo Gloria (To the Glory of God Alone).

Confessional: As a member church of the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA), we embrace and confess that the doctrine

found in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Shorter and Larger Catechism is the most faithful summary of scriptural teaching. The PCA’s slogan encapsulates well our beliefs: “Faithful to the Scriptures, True to the Reformed Faith, Obedient to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ.”

Ordinary Means of Grace: We believe God builds His Church and promises to bless Her through His ordinary means of grace, which are: the Word (especially preaching), Sacraments (biblically regulated worship), and Prayer.

First Presbyterian Church is committed to the primacy of corporate worship. Regular attendance to the ordinary means of grace is vital for believers’ spiritual nourishment and growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. God’s people are therefore called to participate regularly in the Lord’s Day corporate worship, in dependence upon God’s Spirit who applies Christ’s benefits through His Word, prayer, and the sacraments. As such, we encourage you and your family to consider the various ministries, fellowship events, and educational opportunities, such as weekly Bible studies and Sunday school classes, as complementary to corporate worship, but never as replacement of corporate worship. O worship the King, all glorious above, O gratefully sing His power and His love; our shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; it streams from the hills; it descends to the plain; and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

VERSE 2

VERSE 5

VERSE 3

VERSE 6

O tell of Hiss might, O sing of His grace, Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. in You do we trust, nor find You to fail; His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! form, and dark is His path on the wings of the storm. The earth with its store of wonders untold, O measureless Might! Ineffable Love! Almighty, Your pow’r has founded of old; While angels delight to hymn You above, Has ’stablished it fast by a changeless decree, the humbler creation, though feeble their lays, and round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea. with true adoration shall lisp to Your praise.

The Confession of Sin Merciful God, you made us in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day, we fail to grow into your likeness. In your tender love, forgive us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Assurance of Pardon 1 John 1:5, 7 “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all…But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

(from the Westminster Confession Part I)

We believe man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever;

We believe God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth; We believe there is only one true and living God; that there are three persons in the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and that these three are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory; We believe God has foreordained whatever comes to pass; that God made all things of nothing, by the word of His power, in the space of six days, and all very good; and We believe that God preserves and governs all His creatures and all their actions. Amen

Today’s Service

Today is the first Sunday in the New Year (2015), and Pastor Damon Palmer is preaching a sermon entitled The Fullness of Time, based on Hebrews 1:1-4. For the past several weeks, Pastor Drew has been preaching on Isaiah, and will begin a sermon series on the Gospel of Mark this year, and so Pastor Damon is preaching a “bridge” sermon connecting the Old and New Testaments. This passage begins with a prologue (vv. 1-4), which introduces two time periods in God speaking to His people: “Long ago” (v.1) and “these last days” (v. 2). The Son’s coming marks our time period as the “latter days” of salvation promised through the prophets (Jer. 23:20; Hos. 3:5; Mic. 4:1). The revelation of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is superior in every way to the revelation given to Moses and the prophets. Moses, the greatest prophet was only a servant in God’s house; Christ is “over God’s house as a son” (Hebrews 3:6). All of the Old Testament testifies to the Son’s greater honor, so that now we have a completed revelation – a better way! We close our service today with Norman J. Clayton’s moving hymn, My Hope Is in the Lord, written in 1945. Norman Clayton was born on January 22, 1903 in Brooklyn, New York, the ninth of ten children. He was converted at the age of six in the South Brooklyn Gospel Church, where his mother had been a foundation member, and was church organist by the age of 12. He kept up the role of church organist for the rest of his life. Clayton’s profession was in the building industry, but he also created his own publishing house, Gospel Songs, which was later absorbed into the Rodeheaver Company. In 1942 he was working with Jack Wyrtzen’s Word of Life organization, providing music for both the radio broadcasts and crusade meetings. It was out of this work that this hymn was written. The hymn is a wonderful portrayal of the gospel of grace. It was God’s choosing, Christ’s merit, Christ’s death on the cross, and the eternal plan of God that guarantees the salvation of all of God’s elect – those who trust in Christ. Please join us in singing this hymn as we affirm our salvation in Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Missions

Please keep our church’s Missions Committee before the Lord that his grace and wisdom might enable them in its important work. The committee has eight members who meet each month to seek ways to help the members of this congregation grow in their knowledge of and participation in the work of the spread of the gospel around the world. With the sale of the church property the committee now has opportunity to expand its ministry, increase the number of Missionary Associates we help to support and find new ways to further the church’s mission to the lost. The Missionary Associates Directory, a copy of which each family should have, is to direct us in our prayer ministry for those listed. We plan to add more pages to this directory as more are added to our missionary family. We are, of course, an Intentional Missionary Congregation.
