OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE OF THE POST

Operating within the British Canoeing Athlete Pathway Framework, the post holder will be a key member of the Canoe Sprint Olympic Development Programme coaching team based at the British Canoeing NWSC High Performance Centre, supporting the day to day development and technical coaching of an identified group of male and female athletes based at the Centre. They will lead one of the junior or U23, male or female, kayak classes taking responsibility for the preparation and delivery of international teams in the class, under the direction of the Lead Olympic Development Programme Coach. responsibilities as part of the NWSC coaching team and the overall Canoe Sprint Performance support team. .

JOB TITLE:

Olympic Development Programme Technical Kayak Coach (Canoe Sprint)

RESPONSIBLE TO: British Canoeing Lead Olympic Development Coach LOCATION: National Watersports Centre (NWSC), Nottingham Great Britain RESPONSIBLE FOR:    

Technical coaching delivery to identified Olympic Development Programme (ODP) Athletes. Working in a collaborative and integrated way, within the NWSC High Performance Centre (HPC) Leading the preparation and delivery of GB international teams in a Junior or U23 kayak class Identified projects and tasks which contribute to the effective operation and success of the NWSC HPC and the British Canoeing Canoe Sprint Performance Programme at a whole.

Technical coaching including implementation of training, and preparation programmes. Support Services – Athletes and Coaches. Planning and Review. Management and Administration. Miscellaneous.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1

Technical Coaching

1.1

Design and deliver technical coaching programmes, to identified ODP athletes based at the NWSC. Ensure these are appropriate for ODP level athletes and that they are aligned with British Canoeing’s technical coaching and training philosophy framework and its “what is takes to win model” (WITTW).

1.2

Work as an integral member of the Olympic Development Programme (ODP) Coaching staff, providing support to the other ODP and Home Nation Talent Coaches, including supporting National/Regional training sessions as required.

1.3

Embrace and support the development and delivery of regular Athlete Profiling and benchmarking sessions and the ongoing development of the WITTW model.

1.4

Design and deliver training and competition preparation programmes within the UK and abroad at training camps and international events as designated by the British Canoeing Lead Podium Potential Coach.

1.5

Lead the development of an identified junior or U23 kayak class including the development and preparation of crew boats for international competitions.

1.6

Produce and circulate to the coaching team and athletes on a timely basis, periodised training programmes and monthly session planners.

1.7

Support the full group of athletes at the Nottingham High Performance Centre providing integrated sessions and supporting the wider aspects of the Canoe Sprint Performance and Talent Programme.

1.8

Work cohesively in a coaching team, always to ensure the best for Great Britain and constantly seeking opportunities for integration between programmes and the Home Nations.

1.9

Take on specific projects or responsibilities as identified by the Lead Olympic Development Coach or Senior Leadership Team (SLT) members.

Support Services – Athletes and Coaches

2.1

Work with the Sports Science practitioners to ensure that science support services are embedded within the overall training programme for the identified athlete group, and aligned to the WITTW model.

2.2

Work with EIS to ensure the maximising of the effectiveness of integrating their services with athletes where applicable.

2.3

Engage with research and development projects as required to further develop the Programme’s understanding of Canoe Sprint Performance.

Planning, Monitoring and Review

3.1

Engage in regular cycles of planning, monitoring, and review of all performance aspects of both Athletes and the Programme including an athlete ADP/ADM process, regular monitoring sessions and ongoing development and review of the Canoe Sprint What it takes to win model.

3.2

Support the Lead Olympic Development Programme Coach and other British Canoeing SLT in the annual cycle of planning, implementation, and review for the Sprint World Class Programme and Home Nation Talent Programmes.

3.3

Lead and document reviews with individual athletes.

Management and Administration

4.1

Attend meetings and working groups as deemed necessary by the Lead Olympic Development Programme Coach or SLT members.

4.2

Keep abreast of British Canoeing policies and procedures including selection policies and ensure these are clearly communicated to athletes, coaches, clubs and parents.

4.3

Provide advice to the Lead Olympic Development Coach & SLT members on athlete performance.

4.4

Respond to requests for information or feedback from other members of the Performance Team including the core administrative and finance staff in a timely manner.

GUIDANCE NOTES The post-holder's duties must at all times be carried out in compliance with the British Canoeing’s Equal Opportunities Policy, Safeguarding and Protecting Children Policies and the British Canoeing Coaches Code of Conduct. Ensure the health and safety of all staff, volunteers, personnel and resources within the post-holder's duties and personal responsibilities as per the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. To be successful in the role, the post holder will need to be located within easy travelling distance of the NWSC, in order that they can be flexible to accommodate the training needs of both full time and student athlete. This is likely to involve early morning/evening sessions during the week. They need to be willing to work unsociable hours, including weekends, and able to spend extended periods of time abroad, as required, to deliver the best programmes possible for GB athletes.

Person Specification) Essential Criteria  Technical Coaching experience at Junior/U23 World level. It is essential that the candidate has experience of, and can demonstrable evidence of, developing a range of athletes across gender and kayak classes. 

Hold National Coaching qualifications appropriate for this position (minimum UKCC level 3 or equivalent).

training and preparation programmes to improve the performance of athletes transitioning to senior championship level. 

An ability and willingness to work as part of a collaborative and integrated coaching support team and to align with British Canoeing’s coaching and training philosophy and our WITTW model.



Excellent communication skills and an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals including athletes, other squad coaches and sports science practitioners.
