Challenging Best OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE OF THE POST The British Canoeing Podium Technical Coach will operate within the British Canoeing Olympic Programmes, supporting the development of nominated Olympic Podium and Podium Potential programme athletes across multiple classes. The purpose of the post is to develop athletes to Senior & U23 World, European and Olympic medal performances within the Tokyo Olympic cycle. September 2016

RESPONSIBLE TO: British Canoeing Head Coach Olympic Podium Programme HOURS: Full time on an all hours worked basis

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: LOCATION: Lee Valley, Great Britain SALARY RANGE: Competitive commensurate with experience RESPONSIBLE FOR:   

Technical delivery to nominated Olympic Programme Athletes. Technical delivery across multiple Olympic classes. Designing and implementing a programme to develop a nominated class in Great Britain.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1

Technical coaching & implementation of programmes

1.1

Deliver technical coaching to the level required for Olympic Podium athletes.

1.2

Provide individualised technical coaching support to identified Olympic Podium / Podium Potential Programme athletes within the UK and abroad at training camps and international events as designated by the British Canoeing Head Coach Olympic Podium Programme.

1.3

Develop a performance plan with athletes and support staff to set about achieving athlete goals in relation to our British Canoeing vision.

1.4

To work as part of a performance coaching team contributing to the wider athlete, staffing team and Head Coach in a variety of ways.

1.5

Act as co-ordinator for an identified British Canoeing class as agreed.

Work cohesively in a coaching team, always to ensure the best for Great Britain September 2016

Take on specific roles or responsibilities as identified by the Performance Director or British Canoeing Head Coach Olympic Podium Programme.

Support Services – Athletes and Coaches

2.1

Work with the Sports Science practitioners to ensure the embedding of science support services within the identified athlete group

2.2

Work with EIS to ensure the maximising of the effectiveness of integrating their services with athletes.

Planning and Review

3.1

Support the Performance Director and Head Coach in the annual cycle of planning, implementation, and review for the Slalom Olympic Podium programme.

3.2

Lead & document reviews with individual athletes.

4

Management and Administration

4.1

Attend meetings and working groups as deemed necessary by the Performance Director and Head Coach.

4.2

Keep abreast of British Canoeing policies and procedures including selection policies and ensure these are clearly communicated to athletes, coaches, clubs and parents

4.3

Provide advice to the Head Coach on athlete performance.

GUIDANCE NOTES The post-holder's duties must at all times be carried out in compliance with British Canoeing’s Equal Opportunities Policy, Safeguarding and Protecting Children Policies and the British Canoeing Coaches Code of Conduct. Ensure the health and safety of all staff, volunteers, personnel and resources within the post-holder's duties and personal responsibilities as per the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Willingness to work unsociable hours including weekends and able to spend extended periods of time abroad, as required, to deliver the best programmes possible for GB athletes The post holder will be required to share the driving responsibilities with other members of the team as required to meet the needs of the programme.

Podium Technical Coach (slalom) job description Person Specification – Podium Technical Coach (Slalom) Essential Criteria 

Minimum 3 years Technical Coaching experience at Olympic/World level. It is essential that the candidate has both kayak and canoe coaching experience.



Held a National/International Coaching position for a minimum of 2 years and has experience of working with elite athletes in a coaching capacity.



Hold National Coaching qualifications (or equivalent) appropriate for this position (minimum old level 3 or New UKCC level 2).



Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals including other squad coaches and sports science practitioners.



Willingness to work unsociable hours including weekends and able to spend extended periods of time abroad, as required, to deliver the best programmes possible for GB athletes



The ability to work under own initiative as well as part of a multidisciplinary team. A varied job role which requires a committed approach to all duties.



Good working knowledge of English language.



Hard working and prepared to put the athlete at the centre of everything to support the, to be the best they can be.

Highly Desirable Criteria 

Proven medal winning background as a coach at World /Olympic level.



Experience of identifying and developing talent particularly across multiple classes.

Knowledge and Understanding of the needs of elite athletes



Excellent technical knowledge



Ability to identify and develop talented athletes



Demonstrate a high degree of organisation and planning related to coaching elite athletes
