JOB TITLE: Sound and Light Technician

DEPARTMENT: Commercial Services

LOCATION: Students’ Union

REPORTS TO: Technical Manager

SALARY: Grade 3a (£16,982), permanent, 37 hours per week

DATE: July 2018

Context

The Students’ Union is an independent body affiliated to the National Union of Students and exists to support students in both their academic and non-academic experiences; whilst working closely with the University and local community. Student leaders are elected by the student body, and supported by the staff’s expertise to deliver services and represent student needs; to enhance the experience of all students at the University of Lincoln.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Sound and Light Technician will be responsible for supporting the event presentation of PA, live, lighting and all audio visual equipment and any event sets are provided as the customers and artists require across all Students’ Union venues.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Key Responsibility 1 Support in the operation, management and maintenance of equipment To assist in setting up the PA system and lights for events within the venue & bars. To support in interpreting a lighting designer’s / FOH engineer’s plan for touring shows. Liaise with tour managers & tour engineers on event days to ensure the smooth running of an event. Assist with carrying out risk assessments for health & safety purposes. Provide support with the overseeing of technical equipment & operation across all venues. Assist with the assessment of Health and Safety Equipment used by general technical staff including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Provide support with the location placement of cables and lights. Help to rig light & sound equipment in the venues. Assist in the programming of consoles. Ensure cues from the stage manager during shows are taken in a timely and professional manner. Page 1 of 4

Oversee any pyrotechnics used within the building including but not limited to confetti cannons. Ensure the smooth operation of technical equipment and highlight any issues to Technical Manager. Key Responsibility 2 General Responsibilities To assist the provision of technical requirements of artistes performing at the venue and the venue’s club nights. To assist Technical Manager in the organisation of staffing for events. Ensure adherence to the organisations policies and procedures at all time. To report any equipment repairs and maintenance requirements to the Technical Manager. To support the Technical Manager in ensuring all technical staff are trained and supported in undertaking all duties required. The post holder will support the Technical Manager in ensuring all staff, volunteers, hirers, external parties, contractors and clients observe as applicable and ensure staff conform to: Licensing laws Security arrangements Procedure and instructions relating to fire and accidents Hygiene and Health and Safety Regulations All aspects of consumer law

In addition, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.

Some attendance at meetings outside normal office hours may be required. Selection Criteria

Qualifications: Relevant degree or relevant experience. Technical qualifications such as rigging. Health and Safety qualifications such as IOSH.

Experience: Staff supervision/management. Experience of Rotas. Experience of Sound and/or lighting engineering in a similar venue. Experience of Production for Live music, conference, exhibitions, award ceremonies and clubbing events Experience of Working at height. Experience of Rigging. An understanding of the particularities of working within a democratic organisation.

Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of sound, lighting, audio visual and other equipment/systems and technologies used within venues. Competencies & Personal Attributes: High level of interpersonal skills between staff, external parties and visiting artists’ /touring parties. Reliable. Ability to work under own initiative, delegate and lead where appropriate. Professional and positive approach with the ability to work with a range of different people. Calm and professional manner. Proven ability in organising. Ability to multi-task. Understanding of and commitment to, Equal Opportunities within the workplace. Business Requirements: Will be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
