joyable. At the swipe of a finger and tap of a button, you can hail a car through your smartphone. Within minutes, you are picked up at your desired location and whisked off to your final destination, whether it’s the grocery store, movie theater or the hottest restaurant in town. Here are five reasons why millions of Americans are requesting a ride every day: 1. Owning and maintaining a car is expensive. At more than $9,000 per year, per household, a car is the second most expensive purchase Americans make, yet the average car in the U.S. gets only 4 percent utilization per day. The rideshare

industry was born from the idea that by pairing drivers and passengers headed in the same general direction, not only is traffic significantly reduced, but car ownership ultimately becomes optional when you know you have a ride you can rely on. 2. It’s a safe way to get around. W hile pairing drivers and passengers who don’t know each other might seem unorthodox, thanks to stringent background checks, car safety checks and real-time ride tracking, hopping in an on-demand ride has become commonplace for people across the country. In fact, Lyft, the fastest growing rideshare service, currently covers 55 percent of the U.S. population, meaning 177 million people are able to request a safe, reliable ride every day. By the end of 2017, that number will increase to 231 million, or 72 percent of the country. 3. Ridesharing promotes community and economic growth. Not only is it an efficient way to get from point A to point B, ridesharing connects both people and communities. In 2016 alone, more than 162.5 million Lyft rides were taken. This opens the door for people who wouldn’t normally cross paths to share a car together. Drivers get to drop off passengers in neighborhoods they might not regularly venture to, and business owners serve customers that previously didn’t have easy access to their location. Ridesharing is a powerful driver of economic growth, encouraging local spending and pumping money back into the enrichment of neighborhoods. 4. Four ways you can help your cat with asthma Brandpoint

Humans aren’t the only ones that can suffer from asthma. As one of the most common respiratory diseases in cats, asthma affects about 1 percent of the domesticated feline population in the U.S. Cats between the ages of 2 and 8 are most likely to develop the disease. Described as a constriction of the airways, asthma occurs when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, resulting in inflammation. Feline asthma is not contagious. While it has been hypothesized that genetics may play an underlying role, research in this area is still ongoing. The professional consensus is that if a cat has asthma,

symptoms can be triggered by a host of environmental factors. “While the exact cause of feline asthma remains unknown, the prevailing thought in veterinary medicine is that the symptoms of asthma are triggered by an allergic response to inhaled airborne particles,” says Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina veterinarian and director of Veterinary Strategy and Programs. “It can be a challenging condition to manage, as asthmatic cats can react to so many potential irritants in the environment.” Classic signs of asthma include difficulty breathing, coughing and wheezing, along with many other signs. While it’s not curable, there are simple steps responsible pet owners can take today to

help their feline companions breathe easier. Journal: If your cat does have asthma, it can be challenging to discover what is triggering the symptoms. In order to find out, owners will likely have to make changes in their home. Keep a journal and begin eliminating possible irritants. Evaluate and note any changes you see in your cat. This can be a slow process, but it’s vital in order to understand the cause of their symptoms. Remember, the signs of feline asthma can be exacerbated by a myriad of potential irritants in the environment. Minimize potential irritants: Cat owners are encouraged to avoid any potential environmental irritants such as mold, pollen,

cigarette smoke, perfume, dust, etc. Clean your house more frequently, vacuum and change air filters to help keep the air clean. Try to be mindful of household cleaning agents, as some scented cleaners and air fresheners may serve as irritants. Avoid clay-based litters: Because of airborne dust, veterinarians typically do not recommend clay-based litter for cats with respiratory issues. In those cases, alternative litters such as Purina Yesterday’s News or the Tidy Cats Breeze system may be best.

source of income. Be it primary or supplementary, driving provides flexibility and allows people to own their schedules, clocking in and out when they want, where they want. From coast to coast, teachers, retirees, aspiring musicians and everyone in between is using ridesharing as a source of income. Lyft

is the only platform that allows passengers to tip, with more than $150 million dollars going directly into the pockets of their drivers. 5. On-demand transportation is proven to reduce drunk driving. According to a recent study, 88 percent of passengers say they are more likely to avoid driving while impaired because of Lyft, and 53 percent of passengers use the platform to safely get friends and fam-

ily home who are intoxicated. One tap of a button ultimately leads to saving lives by reducing the number of intoxicated drivers on the road. Whether you’re a passenger or driver, ridesharing seeks to get you where you want to go, be it a final destination or a financial goal. Local communities deserve friendly, safe transportation they can rely on, and the rideshare industry is close to making that a reality for all people.

BRANDPOINT

The rideshare industry has exploded in popularity over the past several years, with companies devoted to making transportation safe, reliable and enjoyable.

FOOD

Five reasons seafood is a great choice for a relaxing date night Brandpoint

“Date night” is an activity people typically look forward to with great anticipation. The good news is, your plans don’t have to be elaborate for evenings together to turn out romantic and fun. Sometimes the mostsatisfying date nights are the relaxing evenings spent at home with the one you love, while enjoying a simple meal you’ve prepared with each other. For planning your next dinner rendezvous, here are five great reasons to put seafood on the menu. • Seafood is a healthier dinner option. Seafood and other lean meats both average about 45 calories per ounce, but seafood usually contains more “good fats” that have been shown to lower cholesterol and your risk of heart disease. Many types of seafood, such as salmon, also are rich in vitamin B-12, which supports your metabolism and neurological functioning. • Seafood offers plenty of flavor possibilities. Far beyond what beef or chicken might have to offer, seafood provides an ocean of flavor choices. Start your date night with shrimp - America’s favorite seafood - and then move on to crab cakes or lobster if you’re looking to really impress. Or, if fish is more to your liking, salmon, flounder, or tuna can all be prepared in a variety of ways. • A dish to match your evening. Date night is what you make of it. You could go casual with shrimp cocktail or pasta, or you can make it a more-formal affair, accompanied by a fine wine. Whatever type of evening you plan, there’s a seafood dish to match. • Seafood’s a cinch to prepare. No need to spend an entire evening preparing something complicated.

you decide what you’re in the mood for, you can find a seafood option to match. For example, this Shrimp Diavolo recipe is sure to seduce your taste buds. SENIOR LIVING

Eight simple steps to help seniors, caregivers better manage medications Brandpoint

Modern medicine can work wonders. However, in order to be effective, medicine needs to be taken safely, according to prescribing guidelines, and patients and health care providers need to be vigilant about the dangers of drug interactions. When it comes to medication use, seniors take more prescription and over-the-counter drugs than any other age group, and they are most likely to experience problems because of their medications. The average American senior takes five or more prescription medications daily, and many of them can’t read the prescription label or understand the prescrib-

ing instructions, according to the National Council on Patient Information and Education. “Unless they reside in a senior living community or have another form of assistance, it can be very difficult for seniors to manage their own medications,” says Kim Estes, senior vice president of clinical services for Brookdale Senior Living. “A lot of factors make medication management a challenge for seniors, including the sheer number of prescriptions many of them take in a day.” MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES

While doctors prescribe medication to treat a range of chronic conditions from

arthritis to diabetes and high blood pressure, seniors may find managing their medications difficult for multiple reasons: • Many meds and many prescribers - Seniors who are on multiple medications are often prescribed to them by multiple doc-

tors, who may or may not a medication makes a se• Lack of knowledge - If be aware of other medica- nior feel ill, he or she may they don’t understand extions the senior is already stop taking it. actly what the medicine is supposed to do for them, seniors may feel they don’t need it and discontinue use. • Physical challenges Age-related physical challenges such as hearing or vision loss, dexterity issues or trouble swallowing can make it difficult for seniors to take their medications as prescribed. • Cognitive challenges Seniors with memory loss or dementia may forget to take their medications as prescribed. • Cost - Even with Medicare and supplemental health insurance, many medications can come with a hefty price tag. Seniors may not be able to afford a medication their doctor prescribed. MEDICATION MANAGEMENT MADE EASIER

“Fortunately, seniors and their caregivers can take some fairly easy steps to help them better manage their medications,” Estes says. “These steps take a little time and effort, but they can go a long way toward helping seniors use their medicines more effectively.” • Most seniors take five or more medications a day, and those with severe health issues or who are in the hospital may take significantly more than that. Make a list of every medication you take, what it’s for, and what the pill actually looks like. • Make a checklist of all your medications. Every time you take a prescription, note the date, time and dosage on your checklist. • If you have trouble reading the labels on your prescriptions or can’t open the bottle, ask your pharmacist to provide your medicine in easy-to-open containers with large-print labels. • Make a plan for getting your prescriptions. You may decide to schedule a drive to the pharmacy every month

on a certain day or have someone drive you there. You may also find an online pharmacy that can deliver your prescriptions to your home. • When you go to the doctor, take your list of prescriptions with you, especially if you’re seeing him or her for

the first time. Your list will help the doctor know what medications you’re already taking. • Work with your doctors to see if you can reduce the number of pills you take by consolidating medicines. For example, if you take a pill to

TECHNOLOGY

Four real-life ways technology is transforming the present and the future Brandpoint

BRANDPOINT

Smartphones keep people constantly connected, smart cars can drive and park themselves, and smart buildings are designed to use less energy as they keep everyone occupying them comfy and productive.

Smartphones keep people constantly connected, smart cars can drive and park themselves, and smart buildings are designed to use less energy as they keep everyone occupying them comfy and productive. Of course you think you know how technology is revolutionizing everyday life. But do you really understand that tech now touches everything? Technology’s influence on modern life may be even greater than you realize. Here are four ways technology could transform your life at home and at work: 1. HOME LIFE

Technolog y is making homes “smarter” and

more connected. You may already have a smart thermostat in your home that adjusts the temperature automatically and learns your patterns and preferences to provide you with maximum comfort for minimum energy expenditure. But wouldn’t you like to be able to control that thermostat - or the lights, alarm and blinds from your office using your smartphone? Wouldn’t it be great if you could ask your refrigerator whether you need milk so you can pick it up on your way home from work? The technology to do all those things already exists and is becoming more commonplace. BI Intelligence predicts that by 2020, 193 million smart home de-

Let this be the year you become a

2. SAFER ROADWAYS

The leading factors that lead to car crashes have one thing in common - they all involve a human being behind the wheel. Data compiled by the Auto Insurance Center found bad driving behaviors like failure to yield right of way, not staying in the proper lane and reckless or careless driving were leading causes of accidents. Emerging technology aims to reduce the element of human error. Connected cars use wireless technology for a range of purposes, from navigation to remote monitoring and control and even managing vehicle systems. Expected to enhance the driver’s experience, all new passenger cars sold in 2025 will be connected, according to the 2015 study, “Connected vehicle-Succeeding with a disruptive technology,” from Accenture Strategy. 3. vices will be shipped. The devices will range from smart clothes washers and dryers to alarm system components, energy equipment like thermostats, and smart lighting.

torringtonsavings.com

Every time you visit a doctor’s office or stay in a hospital, many costs are incurred. Co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles cost you cash, plus you could lose valuable work time. Insurance companies pay for covered services, while visits to the hospital or doctor’s office costs health care providers costly staff hours. Technologies such as remote health monitoring

and diagnostics can help trim costs and deliver care. Remote monitoring uses a variety of devices (monitors) to help patients and doctors keep tabs on important health indicators, such as blood pressure or blood sugar levels. It can help physicians provide health care while incurring fewer costs associated with missed appointments and hospital readmissions, notes the Deloitte University Press. 4. SAFER SENIOR YEARS

As they grow older, many people find they need help at home in order to remain independent. Assisted living facilities aim to give seniors basic in-home care, such as help with taking medications. Technology is now available to help seniors who remain at home, including fall detection sensors and activity monitors to interactive food logs, and symptom tracking to machines that help automate wound care and physical therapy. Devices ranging from sensors and environmental controls to vehicles that are connected through the internet are some aspects of the Internet of Things, and it’s a network that continues to grow, which could make tech skills more desirable. D eV r y U n i v e r s i t y, which was founded in 1931 with an emphasis on technology, offers degree programs that focus on information technology and computer sciences. DeVry has put technology at the core of its business, tech and health care programs.

Six factors driving the cost of your new HVAC system Brandpoint

More than half of homes in the U.S were built before 1980, according to U.S. Census figures. With most home heating and ventilation systems lasting around 20 years, millions of American homeowners will be looking at replacing their HVAC systems this year. If you’ll be among them, understanding the factors that influence the cost of a system could help save you money in the long run. “The cost of HVAC systems can vary widely, and most people who face replacing a system have never gone through the process before,” says Steve Hoffins, director of marketing, Luxaire, a heating and cooling systems manufacturer. “Sorting through your options can be challenging. However, finding the right system for your home can greatly influence energy efficiency, your home’s com-

fort and its resale value.” Here are six factors that affect the cost of installing a new heating and cooling system, and what you should know about each: THE SIZE OF YOUR HOME

You can probably guess that the larger the home, the bigger the system you’ll need to adequately heat and cool it. If a system is too small for the home, it will work harder, be less energy efficient and possibly wear out sooner. However, too big isn’t better, either. In fact, says Hoffins, “Most homes have heating and cooling systems larger than they actually need.” A system that’s too large for a home can create uneven temperatures, poor humidity control, maintenance problems and a loss of efficiency. Research can help you identify the size HVAC system that’s just right for your home. You can also ask your

DUCTWORK

Certain types of accessories can make your new HVAC function more efficiently and provide you with greater ease of use. If your furnace is 20 years old, chances are good your thermostat is the same age, so you’ll want to replace that, too. Programmable thermostats can be reasonably priced and help enhance the energy efficiency of your HVAC system. Other accessories such as an electronic air cleaner can help enhance the air quality inside your home. You’ll want to carefully consider the accessories you’ll be adding, and factor them into the total anticipated cost of your new HVAC system.

When you’re installing a new HVAC system, it’s important the ductwork in your home works with the type of system you’ve chosen, and that it’s been properly installed and maintained. Improper ductwork can create hot or cold spots in a home, reduce system efficiency and even allow the growth of mold from condensation. An HVAC professional can help you assess if your ductwork is in good shape before BRANDPOINT you invest in a new heating and HOW YOU’LL PAY FOR IT More than half of homes in the U.S were built before 1980, according to U.S. Census cooling system. figures. 2017 Kia Soul’s appeal goes beyond its unique look Personality goes a long way in life. It’s how salespeople get you to buy things you don’t need, it’s why comedians often date supermodels, and it’s why vehicles like the Kia Soul have a following. As it applies to automobiles, personality — in my view — means you’re doing something different designwise than the rest of Matt the competiMyftiu tion. That’s increasingly rare in the automotive world lately — as it’s easier to play it safe than take a risk. But if you’ve ever seen a Kia Soul and then looked at all the other compact SUV options on the road, you know they have being different down to an art form. The question is: Is being different equivalent to something you would want to drive, or is it just for show. I recently spent some time in a Soul and I’m back with a full report.

FYI

Vehicle: 2017Kia Soul Price as tested: $27,620(starts at $16,100) Best feature: Unique and surprisingly appealing look; low price Rating: 4out of five stars Who will want this vehicle?: Young buyers or those without families who want an affordable vehicle and don’t want to settle for a sedan level of the now-defunct Nissan Cube). The large windows provide a clear view of what’s outside the vehicle, too. There are some cheaper, plasticky materials used inside, but the price is also low so no surprise there. Back seat is pretty tight for legroom and overall space, but it’s actually better than most of its competitors. You can seat up to five people in the Soul, but keep the shorter ones in back. To keep with its different look, there are unique colors offered on the Soul (My test vehicle was what I’ll call maroonish), and even some two-tone setups with roof getting a different color. Add all this up and you’ll come to the same conclusion I did: The Kia Soul is not a wallflower.

The 2017Kia Soul starts at $16,100.

201 horsepower (which may be best in class). Base engine will offer 130 horsepower and be less fun to drive, so you’ll have to weigh your options. It’s a front-wheel drive vehicle (AWD is not offered), and you can choose between an automatic or manual transmission. Manual is standard on the base model. Road noise is present to some degree, but not to the Looks point of distraction. Bottom line

The Kia Soul has a wholly unique look, is a fun car to drive with the turbo engine, and is a great option for younger buyers who don’t want to settle for a regular old sedan. I wouldn’t recommend the Soul for a family, due to the limited size this category offers, but single adults on a budget who want something more than a small sedan should give it a shot.
