You are saved by works. But not yours. Jesus did more than die for you. He lived for you. Salvation is not merely the forgive ness of sins. It is the gift of righteous ness, received by faith.

We receive what He deserves — rewards for His good works — given as a gift. And He received what we deserve because of our deeds — punish ment. God works to save you. He gives you the fruit of His labor by grace. You receive this through faith. This Good News is the focus of the Scriptures. You do nothing. God works. And His works are very good. Your good works are done in re sponse to salvation. Justification by grace through faith does not mean good works are bad, but puts them in their proper role. We live according to God’s will out of thankfulness to His love.

REFORMATION 500 2017 marks the 500 year anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of a church building in Wittenberg, Germany. While not seeking to separate from the Roman Catholic church, he called for substantive and specific changes in her practices and theology. Luther was joined by many other Reformers whose teachings were eventually summarized in what we call the Five Solas, “sola” being a Latin word meaning “alone” or “only.” Sola Scriptura: Scripture alone Solus Christus: Christ alone Sola Fide: faith alone Sola Gratia: grace alone Soli Deo Gloria: glory to God alone These phrases carry such weight because they keep us from our sinful tendency to base our justification before God on something other than what God has done for us in Christ and revealed to us in his Word. The Five Solas Our final authority is Scripture alone, not amended or added to by tradition, opinion, or church councils. The basis of our forgiveness before God is Christ alone, not saints, Mary, angels, or any other being. In his substitutionary sacrifice on the cross Jesus completely bore God’s righteous wrath against us. His payment was full, final, and effective. Our justification before God is by faith alone. God declares us righteous in his eyes not because he sees righteousness in us but because we fully rest and trust in the work of Christ on the cross to pay for our sins and because we receive his perfect righteousness as a gift. We are justified by grace alone, through God’s kind, gracious, and free initiative. He gives us what we don’t deserve and could never earn: forgiveness, transformation into Christ’s image, and adoption into his family. All of this is accomplished for God’s glory alone. For eternity, praises will redound to the God whose wisdom, power, and love ordained that he would have a people from every tribe, language, and nation to share in his Triune joy forever.

This year marks the 500th anniversary of the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation as Martin Luther nailed a list of grievances against the Catholic Church onto the door of a chapel in Wittenberg, Germany in October, 1517.
ALL POWERFUL AND SAVING GOD, You, who are are Savior are God of light and truth. You are beyond our grasp or conceiving.
Our services in October will center around the themes the Reformation brought to the forefront of the church that mark who we are and how we worship.
Before the brightness of your presence the angels veil their faces. With lowly rever ence and adoring love we acclaim your glory and sing your praise, for you have shown us your truth and love in Jesus Christ, our Savior. We sing of your power and give you praise this day from thankful hearts. Thank You for being a friend of sinners, and lover of our souls. Amen.
We will conclude with a church-wide worship celebration and fellowship, REFORMATION 500, next Sunday evening at 6 pm.

Robinson’s widowed mother sent him at age 14 to London, to learn the trade of barber and hair dresser. However, his master found he enjoyed reading more than work.

Converted to Christ at age 17, Robinson became a Methodist minister. He later moved to the Baptist church and pastored in Cam bridge, England. He wrote a number of hymns, as well as books on the subject of theology. His later life was ev idently not an easy one, judging from a well known story about this hymn “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” One day, he en countered a woman who was studying a hymnal, and she asked how he liked the hymn she was humming. In tears, he replied, “Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then.” Often our faith is strong. Often weak. But it is not God or the Gospel that has changed -- It is the solid rock upon which we can anchor our “prone to wander” soul...

This hymn is from the “Hymns for a Modern Refor mation” collection produced by Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. It is a poem by James Boice is based on the dox ology of Revelation 1:5-7: “To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.” Here we acknowl edge divine love, and liberating atonement, and coming judgment. “All praise to Christ from grateful men forevermore. Amen.”
