JOSEPH SOLD INTO EGYPT

The graphics for this story were taken from the May 1990 Friend Magazine.

Jacob, whose name had been changed to Israel, had twelve sons, but Joseph was his favorite son. Israel gave him a beautiful coat of many colors, which made his brothers jealous and angry. (Genesis 37:3-4)

Joseph’s dreams also made his brothers angry. He dreamed that he and his brothers were tying sheaves of grain and that his brother’s sheave’s all bowed towards his. (Genesis 37:5-8)

PAGE 2

Another time, Joseph dreamed that his brothers were stars and his parents were the sun and the moon and that they all bowed to him. This too, made them angry. They did not want to serve Joseph. (Genesis 37:9-11)

PAGE 3

One time when his brothers were out feeding the sheep, Israel sent Joseph to see how they were doing. When the brothers saw Joseph, they remembered his dreams, and ten of them planned to kill him. But Reuben persuaded them not to. Instead, they grabbed him and tore off his coat and threw him into a pit. (Genesis 37:12-24)

Soon some Ishmaelites were passing by, and his brothers sold Joseph to them. Then his brothers killed a young goat, and dipped Joseph’s coat in its blood, and showed the coat to Israel hoping to convince him that a beast had killed and devoured Joseph. Israel was heartbroken. (Genesis 37:25:35)

PAGE 5

Joseph was carried away by the Ishmaelites into Egypt where he was sold to a man named Potiphar. (Genesis 37:36)

PAGE 6

Joseph had been sold as a slave to an Egyptian named Potiphar. Because Joseph was honest and hard working, Potiphar appointed him overseer of all that he, Potiphar, had. (Genesis 39:1-6)

PAGE 7

But Potiphar’s wicked wife told lies about Joseph. Potiphar believed his wife and threw Joseph into prison for a long time. (Genesis 39:7-20)

PAGE 8

Joseph told Pharaoh that his dreams meant that there would be seven years of plenty of food followed by seven years of famine. Pharaoh believed that the Spirit of God was with Joseph, and put him in charge of collecting and storing food for the famine. (Genesis 41:15-41)

PAGE 9

After the years of plenty, there was a famine, but the people of Egypt survived because of the food that Joseph had stored. People from other lands also came to buy food. (Genesis 41:47-49, 53-57)

PAGE 10

Israel’s family was hungry too. He sent his ten oldest sons to Egypt to buy food. When Joseph saw his brothers, he knew who they were, but he disguised himself so that they did not recognize him. When they bowed down to Joseph, his dreams of the grain and the stars came true. (Genesis 42:1-9)

PAGE 11

Joseph pretended to think that his brothers were spies. He kept Simeon as a hostage so that the others would bring Benjamin to Egypt. Before the nine brothers left, Joseph had all of the money that they had paid for food hidden inside their sacks of corn. (Genesis 42:9-26)

PAGE 12

When Israel’s family had eaten all the food that had been brought from Egypt, the nine brothers returned to Egypt with Benjamin. Joseph invited them to dinner at his house. He cried when he saw Benjamin. (Genesis 43:1-30)

PAGE 13

Finally, Joseph told his brothers who he was, and after they saw that Joseph was not angry with them, they cried and kissed each other. Later, all of Israel’s family came to live in Egypt. (Genesis 44-46:7)
