Apply Now for Leadership Washington County The application deadline is fast approaching for those interested in participating in the Leadership Washington County program. This is the renowned local program designed to seek out current and future leaders from all segments of our community in order to educate, train and motivate them to be effective leaders. Leadership Washington County participants are exposed to educational sessions covering many aspects of the community and region. The sessions create an awareness of the resources of Washington County

and put the class in contact with local experts in various fields. Program participants also gain valuable experience from interacting with each other and forming lasting relationships with other professionals. Employers who send key personnel through the class benefit by having an employee who is educated about the resources of the county and has learned new leadership skills. The program involves a time commitment of one day a month for ten months and a tuition fee that covers all tours, meals, group travel

and supplies. The program begins on Aug. 7 with an orientation, and day-long sessions are then held once a month through May 2014. Any person or business interested in more information can visit the Chamber website, www.BrenhamTexas.com and click on “Leadership Program” or call the Washington County Chamber at (979) 836-3695. Applications are now available both at the Chamber office (314 S. Austin Street, Brenham) and on the website. The deadline for applications to be turned in is July 20.

BLUE BLAZER Spotlight – LINDA PIPES Linda is enjoying a new chapter in her life as Blue Blazer, to serve and support Washington County, its people, and the businesses that serve and support all of us in this county. She was born in Texas, grew up in Thibodaux, La., married a Texas boy and then came back “home” to Texas. Loving to learn, read and study, has seen her attending Nicholls State College in Thibodaux, Meadows Draughn Business College in New Orleans, Lamar Tech in Beaumont, Blinn, Texas A&M, Sam Houston University, and finally, after achieving those degrees, Neuhaus Education Center in Houston for another three year study to specialize in teaching dyslexic students. She taught here for 35 years and holds dear the memories of all the

little children she was privileged to spend those years with. For a slight diversion, she took modeling in New Orleans, is also a licensed Image Consultant, was a rep. for Designer Fabrics for 14 years, and is an Amway rep. The Texas boy she married, Paul Pipes, followed his degrees in business from Sam Houston with years as an accountant for an oil company and then spent 30 years teaching accounting and business subjects, 28 of the 30 for BISD. He was county commissioner for Washington County for eight years. They have two daughters, Dana and Tricia, who were born and raised here. Now there are four grandchildren, so trips to San Antonio and Georgia have added a special joy to the Pipes’ family.

For regular businesses, it should also be about upcoming special events, as long as there is no purchase required for the reader to experience the event.

Jay also took the staff to the Inn’s 24-acre USDA-certified organic farm that provides their restaurant with fresh, flavorful ingredients. The farm specializes in heirloom varieties of fruits and seasonal vegetables such as figs, persimmons, peaches and tomatoes. A berry patch, orchard and herb garden also help the ranch move toward total self-sufficiency. A high-tech, 7,000 square-foot greenhouse provides their chefs with fresh produce throughout winter.
