Colley Completes First Year at Institute for Organization Management Institute for Organization Management (IOM), the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Jacob Colley President/CEO, of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber has recently completed his first year at Institute for Organization Management, a four-year nonprofit leadership training program at the Southeast Institute site in Athens, GA. “Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.” “IOM is a phenomenal program with top-notch instructors,” said Colley. “I feel that I have left my first year with a better understanding of my organization and myself as a leader. I look forward to the next three years of developing skills and gaining knowledge to ensure our Chamber is as innovative and effective in achieving our mission of serving the business community of the region.” Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four week long sessions at five different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively. Institute for Organization Management is the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. It is the premier nonprofit professional development program for association and chamber professionals, fostering individual growth through interactive learning and networking opportunities. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USCCF) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce dedicated to strengthening America’s longterm competitiveness by addressing developments that affect our nation, our economy, and the global business environment.

PLI Concludes Inaugural Year With Regional Tourism Experience The Patton Leadership Institute class met on July 9 for their last session in the inaugural year of the Chamber’s professional development and leadership program. The class started their day at the White Lightening Zip Line in Pikeville with a thrilling regional tourism experience. It was the first time zip lining for several PLI class members. “It was my first time zip lining and it was awesome! At first I was a little nervous but afterwards it was like a rush and was very enjoyable. Being so high up gave you a great view,” said Grace Nelson, Community Liaison – Eastern Region for Anthem BCBS Medicaid. It was also PLI class member, Terri Mullins first time zip lining. Mullins is the owner to BT Media Group, a regional video production company. “It was extremely fun! I definitely know now that I like zip lining and would 4 | BUSINESS CALL

want to go again. Beautiful mountains are what make up our region and the White Lightening Zip Line runs through our mountains, so you are able to experience the serene Appalachian Mountains that make up part of our region,” said Mullins. The class then visited Jenny Wiley Theatre in downtown Pikeville. Jenny Wiley Theatre, the region’s largest professional theatre, has provided quality theatre to the region for over 50 years. Marty Childers, Executive Director at Jenny Wiley Theatre gave a tour of the indoor facility in downtown Pikeville and discussed briefly about the differences between the new indoor Main Stage Theatre in Pikeville and the amphitheatre located in Prestonsburg, Ky. at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. Regarding the new facility in Pikeville, Childers stated, “We wanted a space we could use for multiple functions. That’s why we chose retractable seats; it

can be very versatile. It is amazing that we have this space in Pikeville. The space can be very functional and you can do a lot of things with it.” Jenny Wiley Theatre is planning on hosting comedy nights and concerts in the near future. For wonderful productions, please take some time and visit Jenny Wiley Theatre. Upcoming shows include Shrek the Musical, Little Shop of Horrors, Aladdin Jr. and Legally Blonde Jr. For show times or questions, please call (606) 886-9274 or visit jwtheatre.com. Next the class heard from Ryan Jones, Project Coordinator for Alltech. Alltech was founded in 1980 by Irish biochemist and entrepreneur Dr. Pearse Lyons. Alltech is a leading global biotechnology company whose mission is to improve the health and performance of people, animals and plants through natural nutrition

INSIDE THE CHAMBER and scientific innovation. Jones spoke about the Dueling Barrel’s Brewery and Distillery, which will open in Pikeville of fall 2016. Dueling Barrel’s will be Alltech’s second distillery and first distillery in Eastern Kentucky. They will be able to brew/distill 45,000 barrels at Dueling Barrel’s. The new facility will create a minimum of 5-10 jobs starting out, but Alltech has growth plans for Eastern Kentucky. Jones briefly discussed two new beers, Pikeville Ale and Pikeville Porter, which will be available in the Dueling Barrel’s Brewery and Distillery facility. For more information about Alltech’s new project in Pikeville, please visit duelingbarrels.com. The PLI class then heard from President/CEO of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Jacob S. Colley. Colley discussed how tourism and the travel industry contributed over $13 billion to Kentucky’s economy in 2014, and how the 2014 tourism industry generated nearly $1.37 billion in tax revenues to the

state and local government. The majority of the counties in the Chamber’s footprint saw gains in revenue and most likely can look for this to continue. “It will be interesting to see over the next few years how the tourism industry will grow in Eastern Kentucky. The region has several initiatives working to increase this sector of our economy, particularly the new brewery and distillery, Dueling Barrels, coming to Pikeville. I think Dueling Barrels will really help promote the region, and will bring in more tourism dollars to our area,” said Jacob S. Colley, President/CEO of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. To end the day, the PLI class participated in the popular Hatfield-McCoy Walking Tour through downtown Pikeville with tour guide, Betty Tackett. Pike County is home to most of the significant Hatfield and McCoy feud sites. Pikeville/Pike County offers a self-guided and guided tour of these interesting historic locales. For more information about

the Hatfield-McCoy Tour you can visit tourpikecounty.com or call (800) 8447453. It was the Patton Leadership Institutes last session of the nine month program. In August, the class will graduate and be recognized for completing the program at the Chamber’s 58th Annual Awards Banquet. Applications will be available July 22 for next year’s Patton Leadership Institute class. For further information, please contact the Chamber office at (606) 4325504.
