First South Dakota Leadership Academy Class graduates at Mitchell Tech

Why the South Dakota Leadership Academy? Organizations increasingly recognize the need for professionals who possess the skills to function in the global economy and are ready to take on leadership and supervisory roles. Optimizing the leadership pipeline and closing the leadership gap depends on your organization’s ability to choose and prepare the best leaders for tomorrow.

On April 30th, the South Dakota Leadership Academy (SDLA) graduated its first cohort of men and women sponsored by different businesses throughout South Dakota. What a successful year it has turned out to be! The goal was to work with the participants in this program alongside the sponsoring organization’s mentor, to develop each individual into leaders that would be capable of assuming greater leadership positions within the sponsoring company. By every indicator, our assessment, the participant’s, and the mentor’s, we succeeded in this goal! A few of the following participants’ comments from their capstone evaluation will give you a feel for what they gained from the course:

MISSION The South Dakota Leadership Academy will build the character and competence of developing leaders. VISION To fully realize our mission, South Dakota Leadership Academy will provide the mind-set, skill-set, tool-set, and heart-set of future leaders to empower them to confront the leadership challenges of the 21st century. CORE VALUES We believe in: Building leadership capacity: we develop future leader’s capability and talent, recognizing the power of their ideas and contributions; we promote an environment of diversity, fairness, support and continuous learning and application. Growing local and global communities: we have a genuine concern for the welfare of communities we reach through our work. We conduct our work with high standards of quality and integrity to develop leaders prepared to transform their organizations and societies for the most difficult leadership challenges of the 21st century. Developing educated advocates: we promote the value of knowledge and judgment to enable decisiveness in problem solving for our organizations and communities focused on integrity and courage. Engaging our stakeholders: we listen to and regularly connect with our stakeholders, working to address shared issues of concern and embracing new challenges.

“The past year with the South Dakota Leadership Academy has been a great experience. I’ve learned so much! I have been exposed to innovative ideas that have generated new thought processes. I formed those ideas into a vision for what I want (my) team to be like. Now, I feel like I not only have a direction, but a direction that could be revolutionary!” – Chris Foster, Support Team Leader, Innovative Systems

CHAMBER MISSION STATEMENT: Provide leadership to unify community action that enhances the business environment and the quality of life in the Mitchell area.

Jennifer Reecy, Executive Director, states, “While MTI is confident that our partnering organizations are already seeing the positive change in those who participated in the SDLA; it is ultimately the subsequent performance of the individual in the company that will determine the real, ongoing impact of the SDLA. We know that leadership isn’t a “dump and done” process—it takes experience and continual work at learning how to be a leader that will, in the end, develop the best leaders. We are confident, however, that this program provided the solid foundation in leadership fundamentals, critical to the formation of today’s leaders. The infusion of company values, culture and practices into the leadership development process supported by the mentor, ensured our collaborative efforts in tying leadership fundamentals back to the sponsoring organization.” The registration process for next year’s class opened this past week. Simply go online to: https://www.mitchelltech.edu/sdla-registration and complete the application. For more information please contact Jennifer M. MANAGEMENT & STAFF

“I believe we have all changed from the first day we stepped into the South Dakota Leadership Academy (SDLA). In my Personal Leadership Plan, I began with a quote by Mother Teresa “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.” Throughout the SDLA, I found out that I have been called to be the stone which creates the ripples. We are all leaders; leadership starts with me, and I am committed to mentoring others on their growth journey in hopes they too can pass the torch on in developing others. Leadership is not about changing the world in a grand or dramatic way, all you need to be is the stone, living a life of leadership that makes the ripples. The SDLA helped me discover my purpose, my “Why” and my life will never be the same!” – Tom Urban, Warehouse Foreman, Muth Electric

Prairie Business Magazine Accepting Submissions for 50 Best Places to Work Contest

Companies will be nominated through an anonymous employee satisfaction survey and will be rated in areas including work environment, employee benefits and employee happiness. The top 25 small companies (99 or fewer full-time employees) and the top 25 large companies (100+ employees) will be honored in the magazine.

Consideration will be given to the number of nominations received per company. The contest is open to for-profit companies in the Prairie Business readership area. The Employee Engagement and Satisfaction Survey can be found online at prairiebizmag. com under the 50 Best Companies tab. Because companies will be rated according to input from employees, it will be vital for company leaders and employees to spread the word in order to receive the recognition they feel the business deserves. Nomination forms and contest details are available online at prairiebizmag.com. The deadline for nominations is July 8. - From Prairie Business Magazine

2016-2017 Business Startup Packet Available can be overwhelming. The Governor’s Office of Economic Development, with the assistance of several other agencies, has updated the latest version of the Business Start-Up Packet, available online at www. sdreadytowork.com/Build-Your-Business/ Start-Your-Business.aspx. In the packet you can find pertinent information on how to start and maintain a successful business from the ground up. The Licensing & Registering Your Business section contains information about the

different types of licenses needed for a variety of industries. The intent of this packet is to provide a new business owner the resources necessary to make their business a reality while saving them time in the process.

Identifying Regional Ag Development Sites A recent influx of value-added ag development proposals has created a call from both the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) and the South Dakota Dept. of Ag to help identify potential greenfield development sites in Mitchell’s sixcounty region.

Steve Griesert, with Community Partners Research, made a community visit on April 19th meeting with community leaders and others involved in housing development. Initial discussions indicate a need to utilize in-fill lots in established neighborhoods as well as development of a new, smaller housing subdivision.

Development projects have included both livestock and grain processing and the need for good infrastructure (farm-to-market roads) and the capacity to provide needed natural resources (water, natural gas and electricity).

Assistance provided: Working with the City and Development Corp., a grant application was submitted to South Dakota Housing Development Authority. The City was awarded $2,500 matching grant to pay for the housing survey.

To ensure all of the appropriate steps are taken, a new business owner can use the New Business Checklist as a guide during their journey.

Development of databases of basic housing information was gathered and shared with the housing consultant to supplement his personal interviews with numerous individuals who impact current and future development.

The packet contains contact information and links to websites for all of the resources throughout. Any additional questions can be directed to the GOED for clarification. For more information, contact the Governor’s Office of Economic Development at 605.773.3301 or [email protected].

Assistance provided: In consultation with each County’s Rural Site Analysis document and working with Planning & Development District III, County Planning Departments and utility providers, we have been exploring potential land use sites that meet a list of specific site selection criteria. While these types of projects provide a potential for additional growth in the ag sector, a thoughtful review of the financial, political, environmental and quality of life aspects of these projects continues to be examined on a case-by-case basis.
