Letter from Laura LETTER FROM LAURA “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.” John 15:12-15 What does a friend of Jesus look like? We don’t talk about friendship in the church too much, do we? We talk about believing, trusting, following, being a disciple, confessing Jesus as the Christ, but we don’t always talk about being friends with Jesus. What does a friend of Jesus look like? Friendship with Jesus isn’t something we earn or achieve. Jesus does not call these first disciples friends as he sits around the dinner table with them because there is a sudden improvement in their character or disposition. He tells them he is their friend and clearly wants their friendship in return. What are the qualities of good friends? Friends listen. Friends are trustworthy. Friends are people we can show our hearts to. Friends are people we let see our warts and flaws. “Friends are people (we) make a part of our life just because we feel like it.” (Buechner, Beyond Words, 120) That’s what Jesus does! You did not choose me but I chose you, Jesus says. It’s a staggering thought. We think of the love of God. The mercy of God. The judgment of God. But do we often think of the friendship of God? To us has been given the privilege of being informed, of being instructed, of being told everything that Jesus has heard from his Father and we are, then, to love each other just as Jesus loves us. We are to treat each other just the way Jesus treats us, just the way we hope to be treated in our own turn: with honor, respect, kindness, patience, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to yield love, peace and joy (Gal 5). It is in this way that we are friends of Jesus, living into our organic connection to the Vine, of which we are the branches; and as branches: Fruit bearing makes the Heavenly Gardener look good Fruit bearing verifies our identity Fruit bearing shows we are friends of Jesus…. Jesus invites us to be his friends, saying: You did not choose me but I chose you. There you have it. Jesus chooses us and calls us friends. Will you choose him in return? Do you? Blessings, Rev. Laura

UPC Mission Study Task Force Up and Working The MSTF is made up of Rev. Laura, Jennie Boswell, Kay Covey, Sean Jennings, Nancy Jones, Sue McGill, Colleen Rouzer, Gordon Selling, and Stan Strickler. All of them have eagerly embraced this opportunity to make a positive impact on planning for the future of UPC. With the wide variety of schedules and availability for service in this energetic congregation, of course there were also those who had to decline being in service right now. As we continue to develop our plans for seeking the next pastor(s), we will need much strong leadership for the Session, Deacons and the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). The MSTF is hoping that everyone will find a way to be involved in this step we are in now, of assessing who we are and where God is calling us to head. The MSTF is planning four main events that involve the congregation directly. It is hoped that everyone will do at least one of these responses/events. Starting today, we are hosting: ~Home Gatherings – intimate facilitated gatherings limited to a max of 12 participants. At each gathering, the same questions will be asked and data will be anonymously collected and reported. These home gatherings will be hosted in people’s homes, at the church, after worship on a series of Sundays, at Independence Village, Buehler and Proctor and in other places as we discover they need to be scheduled. We want maximum participation from the congregation in these events and are planning at least 25 gatherings before the end of August. ~A Time of Historical Reflection This is a large group event – held once. We’ll probably feed you first and then spend a few hours remembering our history as far back as we can go, decade by decade, pastorate by pastorate. In this process we’ll discover what our history means; what strengths we have that we want to build on and what might need correction in how we operate. ~A Time of Norms Identification This is another large group event – held once. We will identify the unwritten rules we live by and ask what’s good about them and whether anything needs correction. For both large group events, those who were unable to attend will have an opportunity on the following Sunday to “vote” on what those present discovered to be our UPC strengths and growth edges. ~A survey will be provided, in more than one form, to accommodate our different comfort levels with technology. Stay tuned – and please say “yes” to participating in a Home Gathering.

Community Choir The Community Choir is back! This group is designed for anyone who likes to sing. You do not have to be trained, you do not need to read music, and you don’t have to have any choir experience! The goal is to meet the singers in the Chancel Choir, have fun singing, and offer music to God and the community in worship. If you have wanted to sing with a group, or have sung with a group but can’t commit to weekly rehearsals, this opportunity is for you. Our last date is August 12th and we will have a rehearsal in the sanctuary at 9am to learn the music. Then, the Community Choir will sing for the prelude and then head back to their seats so everyone can be in the pews for the rest of the service. If you have any questions, please let me know. If not, I hope to see you at Community Choir!

Worship & Arts Cont’d Why Do You Go to Church? For my whole adult life, I have been a professional Christian, meaning I get paid to be at church on Sunday mornings. The whole notion of going to church as a layperson has taken on a mythic dimension in my thoughts. I often wonder to myself if I had a non-church job, would I get up early on a Sunday morning week-in and week-out to go to church, or would I choose to have family time, exercise, read, watch the news, or go golfing? When I ask people why they go to church, I hear a lot about preaching. But we live in an age of podcasts where you can literally hear the best preachers in the world from a wide variety of traditions during your morning commute. True, these sermons won’t be contextual to your experience in a local community, but you can still hear amazing sermons that will convict, inspire, and engage your mind. Is it to hear music that entertains us? If this were the case, there are plenty of musical performances around where we can be inspired by the creativity and presentation of the given musical ensemble. I am a little partial to this, but church is one of the few places where communal singing takes place. So, if you like singing with big groups of people, the church is one of the few places where that particular tradition lives on. Do you go to church to sense the divine? If this were the case, there are many beautiful trails where we can hike to personally experience the beauty and mystery of God in nature. Or maybe you sense the divine by having great faith-centered conversations with people. You could easily schedule a coffee date with a good friend and accomplish this.

_________________7

What is it about church that we cannot get anywhere else besides the church? From the earliest documentation scholars have of the Christian tradition, we know that their gatherings and life together centered around the distribution of food (Lord’s Supper), the bathing of the faithful (Baptism), petitioning and approaching God through prayer, and the hearing of God’s Word; all done in the context of a community dedicated to the teaching and mission of Jesus Christ as demonstrated in a community of faith. This is why the early church met for worship, and I would suggest this is why we meet as well today! In the community of faith here at UPC, we together proclaim the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through partaking in Holy Communion. We together proclaim the vital presence of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives through the waters of Baptism. We together proclaim God’s faithfulness as revealed in Scripture through the hearing of the Word, through preaching on that Word, and through sacred music we sing together. Moreover, this work is done with our brothers and sisters who have made a common decision to serve each other, the larger community of Peoria, and the world with the love of God. Not only does our participation in all of these things mystically connect us with one another, it shapes and informs the way in which we live our life. It makes us more loving, more patient, more approachable, more like the image of Christ. This is why we get up to go to church on Sunday mornings.

Stephen Ministry If you are curious about Stephen Ministry and don’t know about this amazing ministry, please read this!!! Recently someone said “What exactly is Stephen Ministry? I never hear about it or know what it is.” Stephen Ministry is a ministry in our congregation in which trained and supervised laypersons called Stephen Ministers provide one to one Christian care to persons facing life challenges or difficulties. The trained Stephen Ministers at United Presbyterian Church are Christie Cook, Ann Gropp, Erin Heilman, Rich McClain, Shirley Poshard, and Debbie Sullivan. Stephen Ministers are the care givers. They have been through 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving including general topics such as listening, feelings, boundaries, assertiveness and using Christian resources in caregiving. In addition their training covers specialized topics such as ministering to the divorced, hospitalized, bereaved and aging. Care receivers are the recipients of Stephen Ministers’ care. They are people from our congregation and community who are experiencing divorce, grief, loss of a job, loneliness, hospitalization, illness or any of an endless number of other life difficulties. Sometimes people just need someone to talk with. Stephen Ministers usually meet with their care receivers once a week for about an hour for as long as the care receiver will benefit by the relationship.

What do Stephen Ministers do? They are caring Christian friends who listen, understand, accept and pray for and with care receivers who are working through a crisis or tough time. A Stephen Minister is a confidential companion who walks beside you in a time of need.

Are Stephen Ministers counselors? Stephen Ministers are not counselors; they are trained care givers. Their role is to listen and care; not to give advice or counsel. Stephen Ministers are also trained to recognize when a caregiver’s need exceeds what they can provide. When that happens, they work with the care receiver to help them receive the level of care they really need.

Can I trust a Stephen Minister? Trust is essential to a caring relationship, and Stephen Ministers are people you can trust. Confidentiality is one or the most important principles of Stephen Ministry, and what a care receiver tells his or her Stephen Minister is kept in strictest confidence.

How can I receive the care of a Stephen Minister? Talk to Rev. Laura, Stan Strickler or Linda Fortin. They will explain more about the program to you and match you up with a Stephen Minister. Don’t know their phone numbers? Just call the church office.

FAQs for UMM! Frequently Asked Questions about Unite to Move the Mortgage! A Mortgage reduction program for UPC of Peoria. A collaborative program of the Stewardship and Finance Committee and UPC Foundation. 1. What’s the purpose of Unite to Move the Mortgage? We will unite the Ministry Partners of UPC to grow and nurture followers of Christ in a welcoming community with freedom from the mortgage. 2. What are the objectives? 100% participation from Ministry Partners Mortgage reduction moving the final payment date forward Ultimately, mortgage completion 3. The mortgage. How much is it? How long does it run? Originally, it was $1,992,000.00 for 25 years, from 2007-2032. 4. How much have we paid on it? What’s left to pay? We’ve paid $1,507,000.00 as of June 2018. We owe $485,000.00. We’re already 75% complete with the mortgage in just 11 years, 2 months!! 5. Wow! How did we do that? By doing multiple extra-mile giving programs, by matches from the Foundation for special mortgage gifts, by refinancing twice for a better interest rate, by faithful steady giving from many people all these years, by directing every unrestricted bequest to the principal, by receiving support to the general budget from the Foundation most years. 6. How many years do we still have to pay? With our present mortgage payment of 6700.00 per month, we’ll have the mortgage complete in just 71 more months - April 2024. 7. What are the hopes for Unite to Move the Mortgage!? Our hope to have every one of our Ministry Partners – every child, youth, woman and man who benefits from our beautiful facility and grounds – take this opportunity to pool our resources and shorten the term on the mortgage by making additional payments on the principal. We are asking all organizations, groups, clubs, members and friends of UPC to consider making a gift between 7/1/18 and 12/31/18. Our goal is to have at least 500 gifts made in this time and apply all of them to the principal. Each of those 500 gifts will also have a $100.00 participation bonus added to it when they come in.

8. Wait – if I give a gift, someone one else gives one too? Yes! We already have $50,000.00 committed to a “participation bonus” fund. The way we get it paid out is by receiving an initial gift from a new participant. One gift = one $100.00 participation bonus. We’re eager for participants so we can also have that $50,000.00 paid out! 9. Can we get more than one participation bonus for our household? Yes, each person in the household can make gifts. The participation bonus applies to an initial gift given by each person in the time period of 7/1/18-12/31/18. To keep the bookkeeping easy, we ask that each gift be put in a separate green envelope. If there are 3) of you in the household, use 3) envelopes, give 3) gifts and there will be 3) $100.00 participation bonuses ($300.00 total). The Unite to Move the Mortgage! program runs from 7/1/18-12/31/18. Each gift moves the mortgage completion date closer. Please prayerfully consider what gift would bring you joy to give, add it to a green UMM! envelope and put it in the plate or mail it in. Thank you for uniting with us to move the mortgage!
