Letter from the Editor

We just returned from a trip to Bismarck, North Dakota for the annual event hosted by Chad Berger Bucking Bulls. This year was a special treat as we were able to experience the $100,000 Match of Champions which certainly lived up to the hype. We are excited about this issue as we have a chance to introduce you to a young man, Cody Jesus, from the Navajo Nation who is making quite a name for himself. He has been having some success in several different associations including the PBR, CBR, and PRCA. I suspect that we will hear much more about this young man in the next few years.

I would like to encourage you to check out our Where’s the Beef section which starts on page 40. The summer months are chock full of superb bull riding events all across our great country. You have a lot of options whether you want to pick an event close to home or make a trip and catch one that you’ve never been to before. No matter what you decide, I’m sure it will be fun.

The Bull Riding Hall of Fame also inducted another outstanding class for 2018 and we have some great photos from our friend, Bill McRoberts, which will let you see some of the legends who were honored.

Until next time, Terry

Talking “Bull” with Brayden

Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. It was very sad and heartbreaking to hear that Pearl Harbor had passed on. He was a very good athlete and today we will talk about how he was doing and some other cool facts. So let’s get into it. Pear Harbor bucked off many good riders like the two time PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney, Cody Nance, and the last man on him, Fernando Novias when Pearl Harbor scored forty seven and a half points. His average bull score was forty six and a quarter which is pretty impressive. Even though Pearl Harbor has bucked off Mauney, he has ridden this great bull one time before. There is a published picture of Pearl Harbor kissing Mauney’s chaps at the event in Bismark, ND in 2017 as though to pay respect to this great cowboy. One of the great rides was when Dener Barbosa went eighty nine and a half points at the 2017 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, NV. Matt Triplett was matched up with this bull twice, but the last time he got on him it did not go his way. Chad Berger, the owner of this athlete, said Triplett’s out with Pearl Harbor in Billings, MT was his best out. Triplett bucked off in 1.98 seconds. Pearl Harbor was beating out Bruiser for the world title, but sadly due to a blood clot, Pearl Harbor is in a better place now. His daddy, Black Pearl, was a three time PBR World Finals Qualifier. Pearl Harbor has a son named Sky Harbor who is one really cool bull. Sky Harbor has bucked off three time PBR World Champion Silvano Alves. Pearl Harbor bucked from 2011 to 2018 but still never won a world title. Pearl Harbor was a really good bull. Pearl Harbor will all ways have a place in our hearts, or he will certainly in mine. To find out more about me go to my Facebook page @ Brayden Hollywood Brown. Thank you, Brayden Hollywood Brown

Finish What You Start…. Any bull riding you go to most of the guys are totally capable to start a good bull ride. I hear guys tell stories over and over about what a great ride they started. Usually the supposed 7+ second ride was really only about 5 seconds, but who really cares 7 or 5 isn’t 8. It really doesn’t matter if you started a great ride if you don’t finish it. When you read the results you never see anything mentioned about the guys who just started a great ride. The only guys mentioned are the guys who finished strong and made the best rides at that event.

Sit Smart How do you usually sit? Do you use chairs that support your middle and lower back? Are your shoulders upright and squared or are they rounded forward? All of these factors come to play in preventing, treating, and living with back pain. A few tips: position your knees at a 90-degree angle and maintain a neutral position in your spine. You may want to use a footrest as well. According to Lauren Polivka, PT, DPT, a physical therapist in Washington DC, “If the balls of your feet are supported on something, it makes it easier to rest on the ‘sit bones’ deep in your glutes, which helps unload your spine.” Alternate Ice and Heat

Dealing with Back Pain: Do’s and Don’ts We have all experienced back pain in one way or another throughout our lifetimes. It is actually the most reported pain in all of America. In fact, 80% of all people will suffer from back pain at some point in time. Some people suffer from occasional back pain that simply causes discomfort while others experience chronic pain that can disable them from their daily activities. And although it is incredibly difficult to identify the cause of back pain, there are various different ways to manage it, prevent it from getting worse, and live with the accommodations necessary.

While everyone is different, the application of ice and heat alleviates different aspects of back pain. Cold packs, which can be simply some ice cubes or a bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a thin cloth, helps combat inflammation and swelling. You may try this several times a day, but never more than 20 minutes at a time. Heat therapy includes using a heating pad, hot water bottle, or even a hot bath. These methods are used for reducing muscle spasms, cramping, and tension. This helps relax your muscles and increase blood flow in the affected area. Stay Hydrated Our bodies are composed mostly of water, right? But did you know that the discs in between our vertebrae are filled with water also? In that case, it makes a lot of sense that back pain is aggravated when you’re dehydrated. Drinking 8 cups of water a day has been the general recommendation but has been proving to be a false representation of what our bodies may

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts for dealing with Back Pain: DO Focus on your bed
According to experts, a firmer mattress is ideal for back health, regardless at how comfortable a soft one may feel at first. For long-term comfort, choose support! Also, it is recommended to flip and inspect your mattress twice a year. If it is older than 5-7 years old, it may even be time to turn it in for a new one!

really need. Because we are all so different, try drinking twice the amount of water you need to quench your thirst. Stretch it out Strengthening and stretching your muscles helps reduce and, in some cases, eliminate back pain. Remember to start slow to ensure you do not aggravate the issue. Yoga is a great example. Studies found in The Clinical Journal of Pain supports yoga’s ability to reduce chronic lower back pain. In conjunction with building strength, loosening tight muscles, and increasing range of motion, yoga is an appropriate therapeutic approach to combat back pain.

DON’T Don’t Over Rest It is a common misconception that you must rest for your back to heal. However, it is quite the opposite. If you come to a point where you must rest to recover, you should not rest for more than a couple days before starting gentle movements again. Be sure to do what you feel most comfortable with whether it be swimming, walking, or yoga. Any kind of movement is better than none when it comes to treating back pain! Sleep on Your Stomach This is the worst position for your back for a number of reasons. Laying on your stomach forces your neck to stay rotated and therefore altering your spine’s position. That’s not how you should sleep! Try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees or on your back with a pillow under knees instead. Sit for Long Periods of Time Sitting without getting up and moving around periodically causes your hip flexors to shorten and your shoulders to round forward. Both of these things put unnecessary pressure on your spine. Instead, try to get up for 20 minutes every couple of hours at the very minimum. Smoke Cigarettes We are all aware of the serious health risks associated with cigarette smoking, but did you know how closely correlated it is with causing back pain? This happens because smoking greatly reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood and in turn, a significant reduction of nourishment to the muscles of the back. Additionally, nicotine restricts blood flow to the spinal disks. In more than one way, smoking cigarettes promotes a weak, unhealthy back and eventually increased pain.

in words, produced results. God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass,” and the earth brought forth grass. (Genesis 1:14). God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures,” and it was so. (Genesis 1:20) All of creation was spoken into being by the divine word of God. Later, when God interacted with man, He used words again; this time to teach and provide guidance. God said, “be fruitful and multiply.” (Genesis 1:28) God warned, “Don’t eat of that one tree.” Man did not listen to that last one, and trouble followed. (cf. Genesis 2-3)Whatever God wanted to teach man was communicated to man through the divine word of God.

Powerful Words - Part 1 excerpts by Jonathan McAnulty When we are kids, we are told that sticks and stones may break bones, but words can never hurt us. As many of us get older we realize just how wrong this is. Words are powerful things, for both good and ill. The Bible, with more honesty than those who tried to inoculate us against words when we were youths, teaches, “With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.” (Proverbs 25:15; ESV)

Words then are the tool of God, the means by which He interacts with His creation, and the words of God are quite powerful. If you’d like to visit more about this subject, “Come now and let us reason together...” (Isa 1:18) In HIS Love, Keno

Words... are powerful! Words… are powerful! Why are words so powerful? From a materialistic point of view, one might well wonder. They have no substance or strength of their own, being but a collection of sounds, or perhaps an arrangement of lifeless shapes. Yet, they are amongst the most powerful of tools in the human arsenal, and are imbued with an ability that greatly transcends their physical limitations. Which is, if one considers it, certainly an argument against a materialistically-centered world view. Words, if we may take a moment to define them, are a vehicle by which ideas are conveyed. They are the tool which intelligent creatures use to communicate complex thoughts, allowing the sharing of memories, desires, and even commands. That in and of itself makes them rather special. But the believer knows that the truth goes beyond the mere way in which man uses words. For words are of a divine origin, being the very tool of God. God is Spirit (cf. John 4:24). Spirit is a hard concept for men to comprehend, being limited by our own physical senses, but the one characteristic of spirit that we can relate to is “thought.” God thinks. Yet without a body, how does God work and act? One answer the Bible gives is, “words.” Words are the tool by which the thoughts of God are given shape and substance. In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth, and the tool He used was the spoken word. God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light (Genesis 1:3). The thought of God, expressed

THE PERFECTLY GRILLED STEAK INGREDIENTS • • •

4 - 1 1/4-to-1 1/2-inch-thick boneless rib-eye or New York strip steaks (about 12 ounces each) or filets mignons (8 to 10 ounces each), trimmed 2 tablespoons canola or extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Turn the steaks over and continue to grill 3 to 5 minutes for medium-rare (an internal temperature of 135 degrees F), 5 to 7 minutes for medium (140 degrees F) or 8 to 10 minutes for medium-well (150 degrees F). Transfer the steaks to a cutting board or platter, tent loosely with foil and let rest 5 minutes before slicing.

INSTRUCTIONS About 20 minutes before grilling, remove the steaks from the refrigerator and let sit, covered, at room temperature. Heat your grill to high. Brush the steaks on both sides with oil and season liberally with salt and pepper. Place the steaks on the grill and cook until golden brown and slightly charred, 4 to 5 minutes.

Outside the Arena with...

Dr. Gary Warner By Georgia Akers

About three or four years ago, my partner, Cody Hebert, and I had a three year old bucking bull that showed a lot of promise. We named him Midnight Rider. I remember watching him from the fence. He was beautiful: all muscle and alert. I was looking forward to Vegas and hoped he would make the Classic Finals. Three weeks later, I received a call from Cody informing me that Midnight had died of a horn infection that spread to his brain. I really had a hard time wrapping my head around this. How could a magnificent animal like that just die? I went to the internet to see if I could find a Bovine Health for Dummies book. There were none but I did find a two volume set that was written as textbooks for vet students. I bought it and discovered that it was way beyond my capacity but the illustrations kind of showed how the horns, sinuses and brain are all connected. The true followers of this sport appreciate the bovine athletes as much as the cowboys. We have our favorites. A few years ago we lost the great champion, Sweet Pro’s Long John, owned by HD and Dillon Page. Recently we lost one of the top contenders for 2018 championship bull with the death of Chad Berger’s Pearl Harbor. We think of these bulls as indestructible. They are so strong and all muscle. But there is more to the care and maintenance of these animals than most people realize. If you want to learn about bovine health there is only one vet to reach out and contact. He is the man for not only bucking bulls but also show cattle. Dr. Gary Warner’s practice is at Elgin Veterinary Clinic and Hospital in Elgin Texas (for you non Texans, it is close to Austin). He specializes in cattle and horses. If you have an expensive animal, this is where you go. To prove the point-when Bushwhacker needed surgery and post-operative care, Dr. Warner was his doctor. That kind of sums up Dr. Warner’s ability and reputation. I want to thank Dr. Warner for his time. I had to catch him between surgeries. Please tell us a little about yourself (Education, training, etc). I grew up in northern Louisiana in a ranching family. My father ran an auction barn in Gerriday, LA. I graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. I started

work at Elgin Veterinary Hospital and have been there ever since. I grew up using horses daily for ranch chores and sale barn work and was always wanting to learn more about them. Cattle just came to me naturally. They were the only pets I grew up having. I never considered another line of work. I guess I was just cut out for it. I still enjoy the challenges presented by vet medicine every day and I hope there are many productive years ahead of me. Could you elaborate on the general routine maintenance necessary with bucking bulls/cattle? Mature bucking bulls actually require little in the way of direct maintenance. A good quality forage offered free choice, meaning they can eat what they want, with some type of energy/protein supplement based strictly on the forage quality available giving consideration to the activity level of the bovine athlete. In other words, a bull that is at rest does not need as high a level of nutrition as one that is actively competing every week. Of course routine annual vaccinations are important; most often with mature animals primarily clostridial vaccinations are important along with possibly leptospirosis vaccination. Clostridial diseases can cause a variety of infections that can form with wound contamination or through ingestion. Some of these diseases can be fatal. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can infect the kidney and genital tract of cattle. The most common transmission is direct or indirect contact with infected urine. This can cause a cow to lose her calf.

Humps-Horns.com · 16 · July 2018

What are the most common ailments that occur with the bucking stock? The most common ailments we see with bucking stock is related to feeding management. Whether it is accidental over consumption of feed or where the nutritional quality isn’t as good as it should be. Digestive disturbances are by far the number one issue we see.

What are the most common ailments that occur with the calves? Many different issues can affect all calves, not just bucking calves. Clostridial disease, respiratory illness and leptospirosis are just a few of the major disease issues we face. Parasitism is another large concern of young cattle. It depends on geographic location and climate conditions. For instance, in the Gulf Coast area where the climate is moist there are more problems with parasites than in a dry arid area of the southwest. Diarrheal diseases are another concern. Good management and proper diagnosis is paramount. It seems like some fatalities have been horn infections or blood clots. Could you explain the relationship between the horn and the brain/head in bovines? Horn infections in bucking bulls are a concern. Although rare, they can be life threatening if not properly diagnosed. Some show evidence of discomfort by pressing or rubbing of the horn on a post or fence rail. Others may tilt their head to the affected side and/or drop an ear and shake their head. Parenteral antibiotics (medicine by injection) and antiinflamatories may help but usually are not curative of the problem. Establishing drainage of the horn and local treatment of the horn is imperative. In the instance of a severe infection, it is best to surgically remove the entire horn along with a portion of the frontal sinus to avoid prolonged and costly treatment.

is self-induced by bulls fighting. It occurs more with the higher athletic ability of the bull. The back can get injured due to the vertical buck and twist. Arthritis in the knees and hock can happen. What is the most common cause of death in bucking bulls? Bucking bulls are a pretty hardy bunch if taken care of properly. We see problems with the horns and man-made issues by not housing them correctly or not maintaining them as required. What has been the most difficult treatment you have encountered in treating bucking bulls? 10-15 years ago there was HB5, a hemorrhagic bowel syndrome. It was difficult to save the bulls. It first appeared in dairy cattle. It was a clostridial infection of the gut. A true cause was never found. It kind of disappeared. How hard is it to treat a 1700 pound bull? Treatment of bucking stock can be difficult. The larger they are, the more taxing it is to handle them. Facilities are the key: hydraulic tilt table or squeeze chutes are paramount to proper restraint. If an animal is not properly restrained they are more apt to hurt themselves or the folks that are trying to help them.

Because the frontal sinus cannot drain properly when inflammation occurs, sometimes a life threatening condition can arise. Accumulation of purulent sinus fluid can actually cause a localized infection/inflammation of the bone and this may lead to the “infection” crossing the calvarium (brain case) causing a meningitis and leading to the death of the animal. This is a rare event.

After the interview was over, Dr. Warner and I got into a discussion of veterinary medicine and the need for large animal vets. It is hard work, physically demanding and challenging to do what is required. There is a higher attrition rate with large animal vets. Many of the vets do not want to live in a rural environment. There is a great need for vets to go into this area of medicine.

By Kelly B. Robbins

TED NUCE Ted Nuce is a man with a passion for bull riding. That passion carried him to the top of the “toughest sport on dirt” and earned him a reputation as one of the great bull riders of all time. The seed of passion was planted when Ted was a youngster growing up in California. Ted was already involved in riding and caring for horses when a friend came to school one day and brought a picture of himself riding steers. “I decided I wanted to try that,” Ted said. “I tried it and I loved it! After that, I went to my first junior rodeo and came in fourth place. The next junior rodeo I entered, I came in first, and the passion was born. You’ve got to love it to do it, otherwise it won’t work.”

“When I was fourteen, I went to my first bull riding school,” Ted shared. “It was Larry Mahan’s school at the RC Ranch. Next, I went to Gary Leffew’s Bull Riding School and learned about positive thinking and started setting and reaching goals. That put a lot of fuel on the fire of my passion.” Ted joined the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) in 1980 and qualified for the NFR (National Finals Rodeo) in 1982. He qualified for the next 14 NFR’s in a row, setting a record that may never be broken. He was the PRCA World Champion Bull Rider in 1985 and the champion of the California Circuit in bull riding in eight seasons: 1982, 1983,1985, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1994. “Tuff Hedeman, Jim Sharp and Lane Frost were my toughest competition,” Ted admitted. “I finished second behind Lane and Jim and second twice behind Tuff. That cost me four championships! I won the gold medal for bull riding in the 1988 Winter Olympic Command Performance Rodeo in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Tuff won the silver medal and Lane won the bronze.” Ted was one of the twenty original cowboys who met in a Scottsdale, Arizona motel room in 1992, and put up $1,000 each to start the PBR. “It was the dream of all of us who invested in the PBR for a cowboy to walk away with a million dollars,” Ted observed. “The PBR has accomplished that dream.” Ted Nuce with his wife, Stephanie, and two sons - Wyatt and Westyn at The Bull Riding Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Humps-Horns.com · 18 · July 2018

Ted won the first PBR World Finals in 1994. He retired from bull riding in 1996. “You’ve got to be a thrill-seeker to ride bulls,” Ted said. “I guess ‘exciting’ is a word I would use to describe my career. I was addicted to the excitement of bull riding. Making great rides and winning was my passion. The excitement and danger of the ride caused an adrenaline rush that is indescribable.” “ My greatest accomplishment was that I got to live my passion for sixteen years,” Ted revealed. “I lived my dream. Bull riding has treated me very well. It was my passion. All the hard work, the danger, making a great ride in front of all the people, I really loved it. Now I get to share my wisdom and experience with these kids and help them get down this road in one piece.” Although born and raised in California, Ted and his wife, Stephanie, and his sons Wyatt, 12 and Westyn, 10 moved to Stephenville, Texas, the “Cowboy Capital of the World” a few years ago. Stephanie home schools the boys, who are both involved in roping and riding. “They love roping and riding,”

Ted said. “They train some ponies and have won a few checks. It makes it fun when you win checks.” “I’m giving these young bull riders things I know will be really helpful,” Ted said. He works with a promoter who sets up bull riding clinics for kids from six to eighteen years old. “Bull riding is all feel,” Ted continued. “As a rider, you’ve got to be able to feel where you are and then be able to react to what the bull is doing. The only way to figure that out is to get on a lot of bulls. If you can’t practice, you can’t get better.” “My best advice to young bull riders is to go to a clinic where the fundamentals are being taught,” Ted offered. “And parents, don’t put too much pressure on them and let it come naturally. At this point in their riding, while it’s important that they stay on, it’s more important that they don’t get hurt. I don’t let my boys tie their boots on. That way, if they get hung up, the boot will come off instead of dragging them around the arena.”

work and practiced A LOT every week…This is a tough sport that can cost you your life if you don’t properly prepare! Do the work and it will eventually pay off.” As a bull rider, Ted was truly a champion. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the PBR Ring of Honor in 1996. In 2009 he was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. In October of 2017, Ted was inducted into the Western Heritage Museum Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and in May of this year he was inducted into the Bull Riding Hall of Fame in the Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards in Fort Worth, Texas. As a husband, father, man of God and mentor, Ted is truly a champion, offering his wisdom, experience and expertise to young cowboys looking to fulfill their destiny and live their dream. Photos provided courtesy of Ted Nuce.

Ted and Charlie Sampson held a bull riding clinic a couple of weeks ago in Gallup, New Mexico. Ted posted a blog on his Facebook that pretty well sums up what he is about. “As I leave Gallup after putting on a twoday clinic and judging the bull riding, I think to myself…if you don’t have a DEEP, burning desire to ride bulls, you should figure out something else to do. This is not a game you can play and not be TOTALLY devoted to! You need to be on a STRICT schedule! How many hours a day are you going to spend watching videos, working out and eating a healthy diet? And I didn’t even mention all the practice bulls you should be getting on EVERY SINGLE WEEK! Totally committed…This game of bull riding is about TOTAL commitment. You can’t be a sometime rider; the risk is not worth the reward if you are not willing to do these things. Parents, please do right by your kids and protect them. Get them the best instruction you can and if they are still wanting to ride, then they MUST put out the effort. Don’t send them to a rodeo and let them ride if they haven’t done the

The Dakota Community Bank & Trust PBR Challenge in Bismarck, North Dakota is one of the most anticipated touring pro events every summer. The bull riders and fans alike both look forward to this outstanding event for the quality of stock and the quality of cowboys who enter to compete. The event, which is produced by Chad Berger, raised the stakes even higher for the 2018 edition when Chad Berger announced back in February that this year’s event would include a match of champions which would feature a number of world champions from several rodeo and bull riding associations to compete in a $100,000 challenge. The list of invitees was a veritable Who’s Who list of bull riders and included: Cole Melancon 2017 College National Champion Dakota Louis 2012/2013 Indian National Finals World Champion Shane Proctor 2011 PRCA World Champion Cody Teel 2012 PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox 2007 PRCA World Champion Mike Lee 2004 PBR World Champion Cody Jesus 2016 Indian National Finals World Champion Silvano Alves 2011/2012/2014 PBR World Champion

Berger, who lives in the neighboring town of Mandan, said that he always wanted to try to do something special for his hometown area. Berger wasn’t given much hope of success when he began hosting the PBR Touring Pro event but 18 years later, I’d say that he has done a good job. Berger has had some other marquee match-ups including J.B. Mauney versus Pearl Harbor in a $50,000 match in 2017 but he has never created a format as big as the one for 2018 with so many world champions going head to head in the same arena. The format was set up for each champion to ride two bulls, one on Friday night and another one on Saturday night. The winner of the first and second rounds would each receive $25,000 for their efforts and then the overall Champion of Champions would be rewarded with a $50,000 cash prize in addition to an extensive list of spectacular awards. The pen of bulls for the first night were some of the rankest from the Chad Berger Bucking Bulls herd. Animal athletes such as _____________________ were loaded and ready to do perform at their highest levels and did not disappoint. The bulls had their way in the first round making it through all but two of the riders left for the night. Cooper Davis, the 2016 PBR World Champion, was the only man to ride his bull and brought the crowd inside the Bismarck Event Center to their feet for a 91.50 point ride on _________. The bull riders were left to regroup and prepare for battle in round two the following night. The second night of action for the champions started with a different feel than the first. Dakota Louis, an Indian National Finals Rodeo champion, was a last minute replacement for Guilherme Marchi and broke the ice with a qualified ride for 88 points on South Texas Gangster (Dakota Rodeo, Chad Berger, Julie

Rosen, Clay Struve). The bulls then took control by bucking off the next eight riders in a row. The night then boiled down to J.B. Mauney, Jess Lockwood, and Cooper Davis. Mauney was the first to go and laid it all on the line against a previously unridden bull, Midnight Rain (Dakota Rodeo, Chad Berger, Clay Struve, Wilks Ranch). The two-time world champion spurred and reached as the bull kept spinning but he was thrown just short of the 8 second buzzer. Jess Lockwood faced the bull Rising Sun (Dakota Rodeo, Chad Berger, Clay Struve, Heald Pro Bulls) and was tapped off to make an outstanding ride as the bull spun in front of the chutes which electrified the capacity crowd inside the Bismarck Event Center when the score of 92.5 points was announced. As the only one with a score (91.50 points) from the first round, Cooper Davis was definitely in the driver’s seat in round two. Although Lockwood had just posted 92.50 points, Davis could win the overall event title with any qualified ride. The Buna, Texas bull rider nodded his head on Living Large (Dakota Rodeo, Chad Berger, Clay Struve, Staci Wilks, N Bar Ranch) and the big, black bull began spinning to the left, away from Davis’ riding hand. Davis hustled to stay in the center and kept working to avoid going down in the center of the spin. Despite a valiant effort, Davis was bucked off to the outside at 6.04 seconds.

The bull power was certainly something to be noted. Over two nights of competition, the world champions were only able to ride a combined 3 out of 25 bulls. Only 25 outs were recorded after Silvano Alves was disqualified in the chute for not making enough effort to get out on the bull, in the opinion of the PBR judge. Since no rider made two qualified rides, the Champion of World Champions title was determined by the individual scores. The final results were: 1. Jess Lockwood 92.50 points 2. Cooper Davis 91.50 points 3. Dakota Louis 88.00 points As a result of his win in round two and the overall match championship, Lockwood received $75,000 and a pile of other custom awards, too. Montana Silversmiths created a one of a kind buckle valued at over $40,000 which is the most expensive buckle they’ve designed in their 45 year history. There was also a custom saddle valued at over $10,000, a 500X hat from American Hat Co., a custom rifle, and a set of custom spurs. Not to mention the bragging rights as the best of the best world champions in bull riding.

Cody Jesus

The Bull Riding Sensation from the Navajo Nation By Barbara Pinnella

You might not know too much about young Cody Jesus, but in his three short years as a professional bull rider he has already made a mark for himself. Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine decided that it was time for you to become acquainted with this soft-spoken young man. In 2016, his first year as a pro, he was the Indian National Finals Rodeo champion. The following year Cody became the only 18-year-old to win the CBR (Championship Bull Riding) World Finals. He also won two other CBR events that season. This year he has already won three CBR events, one of them in grand style. Jesus rode all three of his bulls at the Hobbs, New Mexico Tuff Hedeman CBR, and scored 90 points or higher on each of those bulls. “Ah man, I can’t even explain how that felt,” Cody said. “I got on my first bull and was 90 points, and once I heard that 90 I knew that would set me up good for the next bull. I was just stoked to be 90 points. I just couldn’t ask for more.

“Then I get on my second round bull and was 90 again (actually 90.50). Being 90 points feels like what I should be doing in bull riding. That’s what makes a bull rider a bull rider, I guess. It’s a special feeling to be 90 points.” Jesus picked his last bull, Elite Bucking Bulls’ N1 Bet N Black. The bull turned back to the left, right into Cody’s riding hand, and the end result of that was a score of 92. Along with those three huge rides, this young man went home with quite a bit of money. “Yes, a life-changing amount of money,” he told us. Cody took a bit of time off to heal from some nagging injuries before he competed in the Lexi Munk Memorial Bull Riding the second weekend of June. “I wasn’t out very long, it was just a hand injury that kept killing me every time I’d get on, and my groin was swollen, and a bull flipped backwards on me in the chute, so I was on and off but I was taking it easy. I wasn’t sure if I was mentally ready, but I just went out to Kansas. I knew I had to do something big so that’s why I went out there the way I was. Turned out I got two rode and won the event.” He did more than win the event. With that victory and five events before the CBR Finals in Cheyenne toward the end of July, he put himself in the Number 1 position. He is going to try to make it to all of those events that lead up to the Finals. “My short-term goal is to win the both the average finals and the world title for the CBR.” And right now Jesus is feeling OK. “Yeah, I’m pretty healthy now. I’m young so I heal pretty fast.” Jesus doesn’t go down the road with other bull riders. Instead, he opts for members of his family. “One weekend my mom will take me, the next weekend my

Humps-Horns.com · 24 · July 2018

brother, the following week my dad will take me. The best traveling partners are your family, I do believe.” Cody’s interest in bull riding would have to be credited to his older brother Miguel. “My family on my mom’s side wasn’t involved in rodeo at all,” Jesus explained. “But on my dad’s side, he was a bareback rider. But Miguel got me into it. Ever since we were small he would always turn on bull riding for me, and he would record bull riding for me on TV. Pretty soon I’d watched 8 Seconds enough that I wanted to do it. “So when I was 14, I told my mom, ‘I think I want to ride bulls for good now’. I had been thinking about it but I never really told her, but I watched 8 Seconds a couple more times and it just clicked in my head that I wanted to ride bulls. “My brother was all for it,” Cody continued. “He rode bulls a little bit, but he was more on my side of the deal. My mom didn’t really think I was serious, but once she found out I was serious I got on my first bull about three days later.” Jesus is a Navajo and lives right on the heart of the Navajo reservation in Arizona with his family. Cody has two sisters and five brothers. Part of the reason he does not travel that much is that he loves being with his Navajo people.

“I believe that the Navajo kids are the most talented kids. I try to stay around to help them a lot because I come from a family where we grew up with no electricity, no running water, and just lived on the res for a long time. I love that place, it’s my home now and I start missing it as soon as I leave it; it’s a place I’ve got to be.” And for anyone who might be wondering, yes, Cody does have electricity and running water now. As far as keeping busy when not competing, Cody doesn’t get bored. There are some bulls at the house that they buck so he can practice a lot, and with three younger brothers there is always time for just plain fun. “We do a lot of crazy stuff. We’ll pull each other around on bikes with the four-wheeler, we’ll get in one of those big bubbles that you stand in, and play with those with the bulls, stuff like that. We’re always doing something outside. It’s kinda dangerous, but it’s really fun.”

Those bulls that are used for practice bulls will become more than that next year, when they will start a breeding program. “We have good bloodlines, and I think we have eight rank bulls in my pen that we get on. We have bulls that go back to Secret Weapon as well as Don Kish’s Wolfman. We just bought them for practice, but we’re looking to start our breeding next year. I am very interested in that.” Up until this point, Cody has ridden mainly in the CBR. He competed in PBR events, usually when he was invited to do so, he explained. We wondered if he eventually wanted to end up at the PBR.

I don’t think I’m fully matured yet.” He might not be, but he is smart enough to pay attention to good advice when he hears it. Between his talent and that attitude, Cody should go far in the bull riding business. Humps N Horns wants to wish him the best of luck at the CBR Finals and beyond.

“If I make a spot with the PBR then I’ll go with them, but I’m trying to follow in Sage Kimzey’s foot tracks. Tuff told me to go with the PRCA and mature a little bit. When I first made the PBR I wasn’t mature, and then I went to CBR’s and pro rodeos and then I came back this year and I felt like I was a lot more mature. So maybe pro rodeo and CBR one more year and then go to the PBR.

Around The

with Bucking Bull TV’s Jeff Bressler

Jeff Robinson had quite a run as a PBR stock contractor. The North Carolina native was the PBR Stock Contractor of the Year four times. During one stretch his bulls competed in 175 events in a row. He hauled stars such as I’m a Gangster Too and Walk Off to Premier events all over the country. His operation rivaled Chad Berger’s with both contractor maintaining ranches on the east and west coast. But with all the success something was calling Robinson home. As result of Jeff ’s accomplishments he was missing family activities and wanted to spend more time in Mars Hill. Jeff ’s daughter Laney was developing into an up and comer in the world of barrel racing. With barrel racing talk around the dinner table increasing, Jeff decided to make a mark in another rodeo event. Robinson created No Bulls Barrel Races as a new opportunity for southern barrel racers to compete in top notch events. Over the last few years the organization has grown to become one of the driving forces in the industry. Hosting their own events and also combining with Retro Rodeo and the World Barrel Racing League, Robinson has quickly become one of the nation’s top barrel racing promoters. Just thought I’d give you an update on Jeff.

Although it’s been a few tough years for Triplett he seems to be coming back strong! In Australia during the Global Cup Matt finished second in a regular PBR Australia event and covered two bulls in the Cup. _________________________________________________ Another bull rider on the mend is Chase Outlaw. After a stellar 90.50 point ride on Indian Medicine at the 2017 World Finals, Chase hurt his shoulder and needed a Dr. Tandy Freeman major reconstructive operation. It’s been a long haul but Outlaw is slowly but surely returning to action. He’ll be riding in some summer Touring Pro’s and has his eyes set on returning to the Premier series during its August return. _________________________________________________ In the PRCA 90 point rides are a little hard to come by, so it’s with pleasure that I acknowledge Aaron Pass’s 90 pointer at the Gladewater Round Up Rodeo in June. Pass grabbed the buckle, one of so many that the Texas cowboy has won over his career.

You can watch highlights of all No Bulls Barrel Racing events on my Rural Sports Network channel on Carbon TV. _________________________________________________

Pass operates like the definitive journeyman bull rider. He is an expert at picking his spots to compete and make money. He has made his mark as an outstanding competitor in PRCA, PBR and the CBR.

Montana’s own Matt Triplett is on the comeback trail thousands of miles from home.

An underrated bullrider for sure. _________________________________________________

Right after the PBR World Finals Triplett had surgery on his shoulder, the same left shoulder that put him on the shelf for five months back in 2016.

Jeff Bressler is the host of the BBTV Weekly Bucking Bull Report on Carbon TV. You can see the reports on Carbon’s Rural Sports Network.

It’s been a frustrating time for Matt. He stormed on the scene finishing third and fifth in the world in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Mike White In His Own Words Why He Thinks the New Partnership with the CBR and PBR will be a Win-Win By Barbara Pinnella It has been announced recently that the PBR is going to be producing the final Championship Bull Riding (CBR) event that will take place on July 24th. This is also part of a multi-year agreement that the PBR now has with the CBR. Humps N Horns wanted to learn more about the merging of these two. Since the great bull rider Mike White is currently involved with the CBR, we turned to him to explain a bit more about what we might expect. “What the PBR has done is this; they are going to produce all the CBR events. So there will not be CBR events as they exist today.”

the line through fifth. “Now, even though the PBR will take over, the bulls in the Bull Team Challenge will be the same ones,” Mike explained. “What happened was, when the CBR did the Bull Team Challenge you bought a franchise. You own that franchise. So all those contractors still own those franchises and will be going to the select PBR’s that will offer the Bull Team Challenge, competing with those same bulls.”

For those of you that follow the CBR and wondered about the bull teams, they will continue with the Bull Team Challenge.

White feels that the PBR taking over CBR is really a win-win for both sides for a couple of reasons. “Some of the CBR riders are excited about it and they are gonna buy a PBR card and start going to those events that have the Bull Team Challenge – they will go to those for sure. This is a big plus, because with the PBR doing it, they have a bigger capacity to do the marketing. They can advertise and do their marketing, and sell a lot more tickets than we can.

“The CBR created the Bull Team Challenge,” White said. “Contractors pay a $5,000 entry fee and each team brings three bulls. What they created were more rider-friendly bulls. Back when it first started you had to bring 20-point bulls. But now it has grown, and if you bring a 20-point bull you’re not gonna place. You need a 21.5 or 22-point bull now.

“We are having better bulls at events, and the PBR needs our help in that area at their Velocity Tour events. We have great riders, and that will help their Velocity Tours also.”

“Those events with a more riderfriendly bull, and more bulls in general, made for a great show, and gave those contractors a chance to win money. The events now pay $23,000 for first, $14,000 for second, and down

simple, right? Well, not really. He has to wear many hats. “I have to make sure the right guys are hired for the right position. I run the event and make sure things come off smoothly. I also have the cowboys getting ready, kind of running the chutes.” When I commented that, in other words, he would be traveling a lot, he just laughed, agreeing with a ‘Yes, ma’am.” He has been on the road his entire life, and admitted that he doesn’t know anything else and would miss going. “Most of the time when I’m at home on the weekends, I don’t know what to do with myself.” But that doesn’t mean that he misses bull riding. Perhaps the occasional bull, but certainly not all of them. “When I see one of those little 20-point spinners I might miss it, but when I watch a 23-point rank bull that’s trying to knock your teeth out, no, I don’t miss it then.” The new fans of bull riding might not remember White, but he had an outstanding career. Even though he was probably best known for his stint in the PBR, he was the 1999 PRCA World Champion, and that same year he won the PBR Rookie of the Year title.

Three years later he was the 2002 CBR Champion. He hung up his spurs in 2010, and was inducted into the PBR’s Ring of Honor in 2012. He also spent quite a bit of time as a PBR safety man on the elite Built Ford Tough Series tour. Mike is involved in the bull riding business on other levels as well. “I still raise bucking bulls,” White told us. “I buck bulls at the CBR, and have for about five years. I also buck them at my house, and put on one bull riding a year here in town; De Kalb, Texas. “And I have very little spare time to do it, but I really like roping, I don’t get to do enough of it, but that’s what I enjoy doing.” It will be interesting to see just how the Bull Team Challenge competitions evolve, as well as what happens with the PBR Velocity Tour. But with change comes growth, and that is what is expected to happen when the PBR takes over the production of CBR. Photos by Todd Brewer and provided courtesy of CBR.
