difficult to reach from our area. No cars are allowed so flying commercial, chartered or private aircraft to the Mackinac Island Airport is necessary or if one wishes a ferry from Mackinaw City on the Lower Peninsula or from St. Ignace on the Upper Peninsula is required.

In the 1880s the popularity of the island grew and in only four months the Grand Hotel was built for vacationers with rates of three to five dollars a night and for one dollar Mark Twain would lecture. The front porch is the longest in the world. Room rates were six dollars a day per person in 1919

In 1979 the Grand Hotel changed hands again, and the redesign was aided by architect Richard Bos and decorator, Carleton Varney, the person who decorated my personal favorite, The Greenbrier. Soon “Somewhere in Time,” starring Jane Seymour, Christopher Reeve and Christopher Plummer was filmed at the hotel with fans still meeting there every October.

fee to enter the hotel may be credited toward their sumptuous lunch buffet featuring meats, salads, seafood, cheeses, breads and over twenty varieties of luscious pastries. Tea is quite the afternoon occasion with proper time afterwards to enjoy croquet on the lawn or you can visit one of the shops or just relax in the parlor. Fudge and candy stores abound on the island with Murdick’s a true treat since 1887. Joann’s Fudge, made fresh daily with real cream and butter offers twenty-five different flavors and very excellent prices with plenty of samples to help you find just the right take home treats. The president of the carriage men, Thomas Chambers, petitioned to ban automobiles, due to the fact that they startled the horses, I in 1869 the first city license was issued. In 1948 the Mackinac Island Carriage Tours were born. After one hundred years the original owners still manage the firm, now in the fifth generation. It is proud to be the world’s largest, oldest and continually operated livery with one hundred carriages and over six hundred gorgeous horses to the great enjoyment of the guests. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours’, proudly boasts, “where horse is king,” and is located on Main Street with the very finest narrated tour of any island. Our driver, Cheyenne, will remain a fond memory with her sweet spirit and excellent commentary. The tour begins with an introduction of the two stars, of course, the Amish country grown horses pulling the very comfortable and fun carriage. Tours include the Surrey Hills Museum with ornate carriages, a change in teams and a ride to Arch Rock, a magnificent view. The tour continues with Fort Mackinac and a return to town or the Grand Hotel or a visit to the Butterfly House. No matter what you choose to do - Mackinac Island is a true delight and a way to capture a bit of living history.
