Verse of the Month

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see, they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” ~ 1 Samuel 16:7 ~

Restless Hearts ~ Pastor Melissa “Search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Psalm 139:23 Imagine considering every moment as a potential time of communion with God. By the time your life is over, you will have spent six months at stoplights, eight months opening junk mail, a year and a half looking for lost stuff (double that number in my case), and a whopping five years standing in various lines. Why not give these moments to God? By giving God your whispering thoughts, the common becomes uncommon. The everyday things we do, people we see, place we go can become moments to encounter the living God. Simple phrases such as “Thank you, Father,” “Have mercy, Lord,” “You are my resting place, Jesus” can turn a commute into a pilgrimage. You don’t need to leave your office or kneel in the kitchen. Just pray where you are. Let the kitchen become a cathedral or the classroom a chapel. Give God your restless, anxious, nervous thoughts and be still in him. Wishing you physical rest and spiritual rest in God this summer! Pastor Melissa

Sunday, 7/28/19 ~ Patient Persistent Prayer Text: Luke 11:1-13 Theme: It’s easy to pray when we are inspired by great moments of faith or great moments of despair. If we only pray in those moments it’s worth asking whether it’s God we want or only the benefits of God. We are called to seek God and enter into prayer even when we don’t “feel” like it which surprisingly makes the great and low moments of life more bearable.

Bringing Communion to People in Their Homes!

Please let Pastor Eric or Pastor Melissa know if there is a Servant of Christ member unable to attend worship due to medical reasons. The Pastors would be happy to bring communion to them in their home. Just call the church office at 763-427-5070.

Questions to Think About as You Read:  When does praying seem most natural?  When do you feel like not praying?  What makes it a challenge to persist in praying? Big Worship in the Park Thank You! The deadline for the July Newsletter is Wednesday June 12, so let’s say a big THANK YOU in advance to all who came to worship at Andrews Park and all who helped make it possible. It’s take a lot to pull something like that off, lot’s of people brought food, Our musicians all pitched in, the church staff helped out in so many ways, our wonderful worship volunteers help coordinate things on site.

Worship & learning Servant Schoolhouse Preschool Happy summer from Servant Schoolhouse Preschool!! If you have a preschooler at home with you this summer, here are a few ways you can keep them staying sharp over the summer! Have your child practice writing their name daily. When they become a confident name writer, start encouraging them to write the first letter of their name as an uppercase letter, with the rest of the letters in lower case. If they accomplish this, have them learn how to write their middle name, last name, and family members’ names! 

Number practice! Whether you are having your child count out loud, count groups of objects, or write numbers, having them use math at a young age will greatly benefit them in their academic future. A great way to practice writing numbers is to have your child write their address, home phone number, and family cell phone numbers. 

Surround your child with literature. A scorching, hot day may be a great time to take a trip to the library. Establish a routine with your child of reading books with them, perhaps every night before bedtime. Ask questions while you read to your child to evaluate their comprehension, to keep them thinking, and to make sure they are focused on the story. Point out letters and words at well, and you will have a reader in no time! 

Give your child outlets to express their artistic side. Have them use scissors, glue, paper, markers, crayons, paint, etc., and let them be creative! 

Expose your child to new experiences. Take them on “field trips” to a nature center, zoo, museum, farm, water park, community center, etc. 

Most importantly, have fun just being with them! We still have a few openings for the 2019-2020 school year. If you would like more information visit us on the church website; www.servantofchrist.com, Facebook; Servant Schoolhouse Preschool, email Diane at [email protected] or call 763-427-7765! Faith walk & talk Life’s Ups and Downs ~ Pastor Eric I just returned from a Bicycle trip with some friends. We rode from Spokane, Washington to East Glacier Montana. One of the cyclists in the group named the adventure “The Great Glacier Cycling Circus of 2019”. There were some moments when it felt like we were in a circus for sure, that’s just part of these types of trips. This picture was taken at Marias Pass on the Continental Divide, it was the highest point on our trip. This day of the trip was significant for a number of reasons. 

It involved about 1,000 feet of climbing over a few short miles

We literally rode through rain, sleet and snow after having spectacular weather the whole trip up until this point.

Once we reached Marias Pass we almost coasted downhill with the wind behind us for the next ten miles to our next destination.

It was a day of extremes, extreme physical exhaustion, extreme weather, extreme beauty and even some spots where the riding was extremely easy. I don’t want to overthink this too much but this particular day did feel a lot like life. There are times when it seems like life is an uphill ride. The only way to make it and conquer the hill and the challenge is to not look to far ahead and make one pedal stroke after another. Sure there are those that can for lots of reasons go faster than us uphill, but we all have our own speed. When we settle in and find that right speed and just focus on the process pretty soon we find ourselves at the top of the pass having pedaled through the rain, sleet and snow or whatever problems life has thrown at us. There are also times in life when things are going great for us. On the bike ride it came right after the pass when we got to literally coast downhill for the next ten miles with a tailwind. It was awesome; it was relaxing I got to take in all of the incredible views of the beautiful mountains, life in those miles seemed incredibly good after the challenge of the long uphill ride just a few minutes before. Thanks for enduring a little bit about my bike ride; it all reminds me of God’s goodness in both the ups and downs of life and the importance of not relegating God to the sidelines. Because whether we’re fight the uphill’s or challenges in life or enjoying life with all of it’s beauty and goodness the reality is that God goes with us all of the time. I pray you’ll experience the presence of God this summer and know whatever you do The Lord walks beside you. In Jesus’s name, Pastor Eric PS: I know I look like a crossing guard in the picture, but I borrowed my friends High visibility vest to ward off the campers and semi-trucks on the road. It worked well most of the time.

Ministry & mission Your gifts to Servant of Christ CHANGE LIVES! Your gifts to SOC help support Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota. LSSMN current runs a program called SMASH (The Student Movement to Achieve in School and Home). SMASH is a high quality, after-school summer program in North Minneapolis that helps youth succeed in school and in their personal lives. Mentors work with youth, ages 11-17, who have missed school and struggled in their classes to take charge of their academic s and future career success while building new skills. Youth in Minneapolis Public Schools are referred to SMASH through Hennepin county. Heather Kamaia the program director says “This program meets them where they are and slowly introduces the idea of how participating in activities that support their success can provide their lives with meaning and fun.” Your gifts enable SOC to be part of some pretty amazing ministries in the name of Jesus. Keep up the generosity---it matters!!

6 am Wednesday Women’s Bible Study Women of all ages are welcome to join our group every Wednesday morning at Mill Pond Gables in Champlin for about an hour to study God’s Word. This month we are starting a new study on Ephesians. Come join us! It is a great way to start the day. Don’t worry if you cannot stay for the whole hour/ come and go as your Schedule allows. For further questions call the church office at 763-427-5070. Remember, God loves each one of us. You are precious in His sight.

Resolute Men’s Bible Study A Big Parade Wave Thank You! Thank you to everyone who took part in making the Servant of Christ float possible in the Father Hennepin parade. A special thank you to Bill and Tina Walsh for coordinating the float. It was a warm evening but the group had a great time together passing out flyers and candy. It’s a great way to keep the churches name in front of the community.

The RESOLUTE Men’s study is taking a break for the summer. Look for more information in August. For further information contact: Tim Carlson at [email protected] Bill Barnes at [email protected] Kevin Sinton kevinsinton@team_id.com

Donuts and Coffee Just a reminder that without the support of generous people like you, we would not be able to have donuts and coffee each Sunday in the Fellowship Hall.

Vacation Bible School 2019 Thank you! It takes youth, it takes adults, it takes a village and most of all it takes love! It takes a group of people who love God, love kids and want to use their time to help shape the faith of children. Thank you to all those people that showed up and volunteered the week of VBS. Seeds of faith and love were planted. You were wonderful!

Faith Guides Setting up a program for the 2019-20 Sunday School year includes planning for our Faith Guide volunteers. Sunday School takes approximately 50 volunteers to make the program happen. Outreach & fellowship

Help Fight Summer Hunger It’s no question that hunger is one of the most noticeable widespread epidemics, however the summer months can be even more challenging for those who have struggled to keep themselves or their families fed. Peyton Lehman, a sophomore at Concordia College and Disciple of God award recipient, has decided to develop a food drive project between Servant of Christ and CEAP – a local social service organization who’s focus is to provide assistance to locals who are in need. During both services on Sunday, July 14th, a truck from CEAP will be at the church in order to collect nonperishable food donations from members of the congregation. If you will be present at the service on July 7th, Peyton will also be passing out paper bags along with attached lists that include food donations that are acceptable. Please, don’t hesitate to bring your donations, as everything makes a difference in the end! 11 - SERVANT SPIRIT
