SUMMER GAMES

ABOUT OUR SUMMER GAMES Summer Games is the culmination of hours of practice, sweat and sacrifice, perseverance and pure joy and excitement. It is where dedicated athletes and Unified partners demonstrate grit, grace and guts by competing against their equally motivated peers in the sports they love the most. These athletes and partners have much to be proud of even before Summer Games begin. They’ve completed, at a minimum, eight weeks of training with their coaches and volunteers, and have competed in qualifiers and time trials during April and May. Did you know that many of these participants have not only been involved in their sport for a season, but have been playing and competing in Summer Games for 10, 20 or more years — and they keep improving and enjoying it! It is now time to strive for personal bests for some and play collectively with

INSTAGRAM — #SOCTGAMES! spirit and respect on a team for others. It is also a time to celebrate with family and friends, old and new — with elaborate Opening Ceremonies, social activities and awards ceremonies. More than 2,000 athletes and partners, representing over 70 Special Olympics local programs from across the state, will compete at Summer Games — in swimming, cycling, track & field, soccer and tennis events. As with any sporting event — it’s the fans and supporters who energize the Games and encourage the athletes. Best of all, there’s no admission fee or ticket required to get into our Summer Games venues. So come out and see great sports competition — not too far from home!

BUILD A TEAM, TEAR DOWN A WALL.

Congratulations to our local athletes!

OUR PROGRAMS

SPECIAL OLYMPICS LOCAL PROGRAMS

LOCAL PROGRAMS are run mostly by

volunteers and led by Local Coordinators who oversee the operation of the team, serve as a liaison to Special Olympics Connecticut and are responsible for ensuring all Special Olympics guidelines and procedures are followed. Training offered through Special Olympics Local Programs PREPARES ATHLETES AND UNIFIED PARTNERS to compete at the regional and state level. Some athletes also go on to compete with their peers across the country and around the world at the SPECIAL OLYMPICS USA and WORLD GAMES! Special Olympics Connecticut currently has 73 Accredited Local Programs across the state. To view profiles of our Local Programs and get involved, visit www.soct.org.

Special Olympics Local Programs offer athletes of all abilities opportunities to train in in the sports they enjoy most in their hometowns and nearby communities.

FUN FACT Special Olympics Connecticut offers year-round sports training and competition opportunities in 27 different Olympic-type sports!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® While Special Olympics’ traditional programs are for people with intellectual disabilities, the SPECIAL OLYMPICS CONNECTICUT UNIFIED SPORTS® PROGRAM brings athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together to play sports, gain physical fitness and develop friendships.

UNIFIED SPORTS® is offered

through many of our Local Programs and in schools at every grade level through our partnership with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC). UNIFIED SPORTS® not only changes the game on the playing field, but also INSPIRES

ACCEPTANCE, INCLUSION AND RESPECT FOR PEOPLE OF ALL ABILITIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES. Over 90% of Connecticut’s public high schools currently offer UNIFIED SPORTS® and the number of younger participants is on the rise. Our YOUNG ATHLETES PROGRAM engages participants as young as threeyears-old in activities with their peers that focus on

our partnership with the Connecticut Association of Schools. We find that activities that bring people together — to share their different talents and gifts — create schools and communities with GREATER UNDERSTANDING,

ACCEPTANCE, RESPECT AND JOY!

Most recently, we’ve expanded our UNIFIED SPORTS® offerings by establishing SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® FITNESS CLUBS. All are invited to participate! Club members are encouraged to “get active” and exercise regularly by walking, hiking, or rowing, for example,
