SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

Hymn of Thanksgiving ................................... (10 am) O lux beata Trinitas .................................. Tomás Luis de Victoria O lux beata Trinitas, et principalis Unitas, iam sol recedit igneus, infunde lumen cordibus.

O Trinity of blessed Light, O unity of sovereign might, as now the fiery sun departs, shed Thou Thy beams within our hearts.

Te mane laudum carmine, te deprecemur vespere: te nostra supplex Gloria per cuncta laudet saecula.

To Thee our morning song of praise, to Thee our evening prayer we raise; Thee may our glory evermore in lowly reverence adore.

Deo Patri sit gloria, eiusque soli Filio, cum Spiritu Paraclito, et nunc, et in perpetuum.

All laud to God the Father be; all praise, Eternal Son, to Thee; all glory, as is ever meet, to God the Holy Paraclete.

Petersen Marian Antiphon ....................................................... Salve Regina ......................................................................... #882 Concluding Hymn ............................................. O God, Almighty Father ................................................................. #551 ............................................................. (Sun. 5 pm) Come to Us, Creative Spirit ..................................................... #806 MUSIC AND LITURGY NOTES Today we celebrate the Trinity Sunday, a primary of the first class Solemnity designated by Pope Pius X in 1911. In past years, I’ve introduced to you the Athanasian Creed, a long and incredibly complicated definition of the Trinity. This year, I wish to draw your attention to what is known as the Shield of the Trinity. The Shield of the Trinity or Scutum Fidei (Latin for "shield of faith") is a traditional Christian visual symbol which expresses many aspects of the doctrine of the Trinity, summarizing the first part of the Athanasian Creed in a compact diagram. The main achievement of the Shield of the Trinity diagram is to transfer a large part of the essential "mystery" or "paradox" of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity from the realm of complex verbal philosophical abstractions and esoteric theological vocabulary to the realm of simple logic, as presented in the relatively easily graspable form of a concrete and conveniently compact visual diagram. While I was the University Chapel Organist at Yale during my graduate studies, I played for services in historic Battell Chapel, the main chapel located on old campus. Unlike many other quintessential New England Congregational Churches that feature clear windows, a stark white interior, and whose only decoration was a central pulpit, Battell was built as a beautifully ornate Victorian gothic edifice and its interior was decorated with stained glass windows, colorful stenciling on the walls, and even painted murals. One of the paintings located above the chancel is of the Shield of the Trinity. It was the first time that I had seen this image and over the course of two years, when looking at the depiction on the wall, the dogma of the Holy Trinity gradually started to make more sense to me. This diagram consists of four nodes interconnected by six links. The three nodes at the edge of the diagram are labelled with the names of the three persons of the Trinity (traditionally the Latin-language names): The Father ("PATER"), The Son ("FILIUS"), and The Holy Spirit ("SPIRITUS SANCTUS"). The node in the center of the diagram is labelled God ("DEUS"), while the three links connecting the center node with the outer nodes are labelled "is" ("EST"), and the three links connecting the outer nodes to each other are labelled "is not" ("NON EST"). The links are non-directional and can produce the following twelve propositions: "The Father is God" "The Son is God" "The Holy Spirit is God" "God is the Father" "God is the Son" "God is the Holy Spirit" "The Father is not the Son" "The Father is not the Holy Spirit" "The Son is not the Father" "The Son is not the Holy Spirit" "The Holy Spirit is not the Father" "The Holy Spirit is not the Son" The Shield of the Trinity is not generally intended to be any kind of schematic diagram of the structure of God, but instead is merely a compact visual device from which the above statements (contained in or implied by the Athanasian Creed) can be read off. I hope that this explanation will help to enhance your worship experience today. We are glad to have you here at St. Jane’s!

SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

their last day in school in a whirlwind of tradition here at St. Jane de Chantal. The day began with the Candle Ceremony in the church where the eighth grade students handed over their candle, or their “light” representing their responsibility as leaders of the school, to the seventh grade students. This is a touching and emotional ceremony, as the eighth grade students reflect on the past nine years they have spent as budding students at St. Jane de Chantal. In the afternoon the eighth grade students come together one last time as three “musical bands” to perform popular songs for the school. This is part of an on-going project from their last semester of music class. CATHOLIC MATH LEAGUE St. Jane de Chantal school participates in the Catholic Math League. The Catholic Math League is a national math competition for grades three through eight. STEWARDSHIP The Gospel today is sometimes called “the Gospel in miniature” because it so concisely sums up the Gospel message. In even more condensed form, “God loved. . . God gave. . .” is the paradigm for stewardship — we give because we love. PARISH SUPPORT

POPE FRANCIS

“The mystery of the Trinity speaks to us of ourselves, of our relationship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In fact, through baptism, the Holy Spirit has placed us in the heart and the very life of God, who is a communion of love. God is a “family” of three Persons who love each other so much as to form a single whole. This “divine family” is not closed in on itself, but is open. It communicates itself in creation and in history and has entered into the world of men to call everyone to form part of it. The trinitarian horizon of communion surrounds all of us and stimulates us to live in love and fraternal sharing, certain that where there is love, there is God.” Pope Francis, Angelus, St. Peter’s Square, Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, 22 May 2016.
