Gathering Around The Word

“It is significant that God does not present us with salvation in the form of an abstract truth, or a precise definition or a catchy slogan, but as story… Story is an invitation to par ticipate, first through our imagination and then, if we will, by faith, with our total lives in response to God.” – Eugene Peterson

Call to Worship

Leader: Storytelling God, we come to this place to hear the stories of our faith. People: In our worship, bring the words of our ancestors to life, and help us to enter into these stories of hope. Leader: Storytelling God, we recognize your presence in the stories of our lives. People: In our worship, remind us that you call us by name, you hold our lives in your hands, and you weave us together into holy community. Leader: Storytelling God, you are still writing a story of love. All: In our worship, prepare us to tell your story to the world. Let us worship God!

CORONATION

*Call to Confession and Prayer of Confession God of the saints and the sinners, in striving to be perfect, pious, and powerful, we inevitably fall short. We forget that only you are perfect. We forget that even the saints were sinners. Help us to acknowledge our sinfulness, so that we can more clearly see your perfection. Remind us that it is your grace alone that allows us- as flawed as we are- to act gracefully in the world.

*Words of Forgiveness

Leader: Friends, hear and believe the good news of the Gospel: People: We are saved by grace through faith. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. Amen.

*Gloria Patri (Hymn 582) Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me, and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me, and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen. World without end, without end. Amen. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen.

To The Word

*A ffirmation of F aith

We acknowledge one God alone, whose demands on us are absolute, whose help for us is sufficient. That One is the Lord, whom we worship, serve, and love. We do not fully comprehend who God is or how God works. God’s reality far exceeds all our words can say. The Lord’s requirements are not always what we think is best. The Lord’s care for us is not always what we want. God comes to us on God’s own terms and is able to do far more than we ask or think.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
