Chandler Chamber June 2014 News

President's Letter Terri Kimble Attention to all Ice Cream Parlors, Pool Companies and Air Conditioning Businesses! It is time to start cooling off your customers with summer promotions. It is such a great feeling when I see a new business emerging in our magnificent city of Chandler. We encourage anyone that is serious about starting up a new business or have already established a business to take advantage of what the Chamber has to offer. Each month the Chamber offers counseling services and provides workshops that will help prepare any business leader to reach success. In May during Small Business Week, the City of Chandler, Chandler Chamber of Commerce, and the Small Business Development Network presented the Small Business Development Workshop. During the workshop, guests were educated on marketing, social media marketing, financing, and crowd funding. All in all, May was a fantastic month; we had a fantastic time recognizing our community awards winners at the Wild Horse Casino and Resort. We would like to thank those of you who came to our 27th annual Community Awards dinner. In case you missed it, see the list of winners on page 13 of this newsletter. It was our pleasure to highlight all of the outstanding people in our community. Although only a small group was honored, we want to thank all of those in our community that work hard making Chandler an even better place to live and work.

Mayor's Letter Mayor Jay Tibshraeny City of Chandler

L

ast month, the City of Chandler in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and the Maricopa Small Business Development Center Network hosted its annual free workshop for those who want to start or grow a small or minority-owned business. I want to thank Wells Fargo Bank for sponsoring the event. This is one of many great partnerships the City shares with the Chamber. This year, several dozen entrepreneurs attended the full-day program to learn about the many business resources that are available here in Chandler. Another partnership I personally enjoy being involved with is Coffee with the Mayor where I sit down with local business people for a morning of discussion – and coffee. Our last event was May 20 with another great turnout and some fruitful dialogue. The next event is slated for September 16th, 8 a.m., at the Chamber offices. If you have yet to attend one of these meetings, I would encourage you to do so.

By reading this newsletter, you probably already know what a great resource your Chamber and its staff provides Chandler and the local business community. Terri Kimble and her group do a great job of advancing issues important to you. Finally, I want to thank all of you who took part in this year’s budget process. This month, we will finalize the 2014-15 fiscal year budget, capital improvement program and tax levy. It was a productive and very transparent process, and we received a lot of thoughtful feedback from people in the community. And to stay in tune with all that is happening in our City, please follow me on Twitter @jaytibshraeny.

The City also works with the Chamber and its Leadership Institute on a number of “issue days“ throughout the year on topics ranging from public safety to media and government.

Price Road Corridor 230kV transmission project Economic development is occurring in areas of Tempe and Chandler as high-tech companies and industrial manufacturers expand operations and build new facilities. As a result, SRP is forecasting increased demand for energy in the area known as the Price Road Corridor (PRC). In order to meet this demand and serve this growing employment center, SRP has initiated a public process to site new 230-kilovolt (kV) power lines and two new 230kV substations. These new facilities will provide additional capacity, greater reliability and enhance the overall electric system for customers in south Tempe and Chandler. For more information, click on the video above or go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOwy9GhcwKI Still have questions? What's Trending in Technology In January of this year Dell’s newest tiny titan, Wyse Cloud Connect, A.K.A. The Dongle, was released. The Wyse Cloud Connect is an IT manager’s best friend. It’s a mini IT-managed enterprise client with palm-of-your-hand portability, excellent security, and rich user experience for accessing broad applications and content in the cloud. The Wyse Cloud Connect is an enterprise and business focused device. Right out of the box it also has Dell’s Wyse PocketCloud software preloaded. PocketCloud allows Wyse Cloud Connect to act as a virtual terminal for remote computers. In addition, it has onboard Bluetooth connectivity, is designed to fit into any HDMI input, and offers 802.11n dual-band Wi-Fi. Wyse Cloud Connect runs on Android. That means all of the features from the Google Play store can be hybridized with your professional android Apps (and Netflix, too). Within the consumer space, The Wyse Cloud Connect acts as a thin client pocket-PC you can carry with you in order to manage and access to all your files, software and communications on your home computer or enabled home-based devices... It’s also an amazing convenience tool empowering entertainment options while on-thego, and a carry-on super hero for frequent travellers. Travel light! Batteries and a power cord? Not a factor. Next time the kids are causing a ruckus in the back seat, use your hotspot to stream Frozen from the Google Play store. Or plug it into a monitor and let the kids play Angry Birds. The Wyse Cloud Connect is a huge symbol of progress within the world of mobile computing. It’s yet another sign of the beginning of the end of the traditional PC. The cherry on top of all The Wyse Cloud Connect’s luster is that it’s only $129.99. You can find the The Wyse Cloud Connect online, and soon in stores near you. Virtual Ribbon Cutting Profile Calisi Financial With financial planner Michael Calisi, individuals and businesses get two for one, a certified public accountant who can do their taxes as well as a certified financial planner-practitioner to handle financial planning. Too often, he explained, CPAs just prepare taxes but stop short of giving needed financial advice. “Yes I prepare taxes. But my real value is that I work during the year to try to reduce taxes ... In reducing taxes, now we have more money to help clients prepare for their financial goals,” he said. “That’s why clients look at me as their personal CFO (chief financial officer) or financial quarterback.” Calisi, a Chandler resident since 2008, graduated from Arizona State University with a major in accounting in 1996 and has worked for American Express and Hilton Hotels Corp. However, he felt something was missing. “What I really wanted was the customer contact ... To me it’s more rewarding to work with people and help them achieve their goals,” he said. Finally, he started his own firm in 2006 where he focuses on retirement planning and helping small business owners with their financial growth. Calisi is affiliated with NEXT Financial Group, Inc., Security transactions operate in a regulated environment, so financial advisors, like Calisi, connect with firms to make sure they are complying with laws and regulations.

Stress: A Workplace Threat

According to MySafetySign’s “2014 Health & Safety Industry Survey,” stress may be a bigger threat in the workplace than employers think. The survey shows 24 percent of professionals believe stress is a significant office hazard that often is overlooked. One-fifth of the respondents reported overworking was the top unnoticed risk. The study found that three of the five most serious work risks are psychosocial. In addition to stress and overworking, the risk of being in the office alone was on the list. Stress can be a factor in a number of industries, including healthcare and manufacturing. In construction and industrial factories, safety risks are typically well covered in training programs. However, some employers rarely focus on hidden hazards, like bullying and stress. The survey revealed that 8 percent of employees think bullying and harassment prevention should get more attention in the workplace. “Stress is an emotional strain which can exist short-term and long-term,” said Nellie J. Brown, director of Cornell University’s Workplace Health and Safety Program. “Demands on specific quality goals, production output and incentive programs can often lead to under-reporting of stress. Workers should address the emotional strain earlier rather than later. Waiting can often be more detrimental and lead to more severe problems for both the employee and the company.” Time magazine cited data from the American Psychological Association that found workplace stress costs U.S. companies $300 billion per year. Employers may want to give their workers some tips on how to reduce stress to lower costs and protect employee health. Simple adjustments such as sitting up straight and maintaining an organized desk can help employees stay calm throughout the day, Time reported, pointing out that posture can have an influence over emotions. Clutter also can cause the body to produce more stress hormones. In addition to causing stress, a full inbox or a desk full of papers can reduce productivity. 3030 N 3rd Street Phoenix, AZ 85012
