When I first decided to open my VOM FASS business in Claremont, I never questioned whether I should become a chamber member or not. After my first year of being in business and the time came to renew my membership, I took time to evaluate the value of being a member of the Chamber. As I reflected on my time as a Chamber member, I realized that most of the people that are around me (both in and out of my shop) are Chamber members. I have a new plumber, a new car mechanic and many other options if I choose to sell my home or need financial advice. Most importantly the Chamber has given me opportunities to introduce my business to many people that would have never known about us. Village Venture, Beer Walk and Wine Walk have all been a huge success for us. I will sign up again when this year’s renewal comes around and I will continue to support my new community in any way I can. You get what you give, I always say! -- Kim Peeples, Owner

It is hard to believe that another fiscal year is coming to an end, along with my term as the Board of Directors Chair of this wonderful organization. Proudly, I can say that the Claremont Chamber had another very successful year. Your Claremont Chamber of Commerce remains strong. Overall membership held steady and even increased somewhat this year. Many ribbon cuttings were held, special events, and networking opportunities such as the Networking Breakfast and Mixers. Your Chamber is continually trying to enhance the value of your membership – we held our first annual Women’s Leadership Conference and changed the format of the breakfast to include quarterly business educational topics and increased direct networking. By providing these opportunities for its members, the Chamber is remaining true to its “Mission.” Furthermore, the Chamber of Commerce continues to be proactive in being an advocate for the business community. I want to sincerely thank our Chamber of Commerce staff for their dedication, commitment, and work ethic. Thank you to my fellow Board members for all of their hard work, contributing their time and talent to benefit the Chamber membership. As a volunteer driven organization, we rely heavily on the personal commitment and leadership of our Board. As you can see, it takes teamwork and a stable support network for a Chamber to be truly effective. Thank you to our wonderful Ambassadors, Committee Members, Volunteers, and most of all, YOU. The members make this Chamber the great Chamber it is today. Be proud of that, I know I am. Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. In friendship, Linda

Water Conservation Must Be A Team Sport By Benjamin Lewis, General Manager of the Foothill District, Golden State Water Company California is in a drought emergency, and water providers throughout the state are doing everything possible to help business and residential customers conserve to meet the water reduction mandates established by Governor Jerry Brown and the State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board). As the drought continues in its fourth year, water conservation is no longer a “should do” for Californians, it is a “must do” to ensure we have a reliable water supply, and voluntary conservation goals have been replaced with hard mandates from the state. Effective June 1, the Claremont community has been directed to reduce its water use by 32 percent compared to 2013. Achieving that 32 percent reduction will not be easy, and it will only be possible if we all work together. Let’s take a moment to look back and see how California got to this point. In July 2014, the State Water Board adopted regulations targeting outside water usage with a subtle bias against residential customers. For most households, the majority of water usage in the spring and summer months occurs outside of the home. This holds true in Claremont, where it is estimated that more than 50 percent of residential water is used to irrigate landscapes and plants. After another dry winter which produced a dismal snowpack, the State Water Board amended the regulations in March 2015, adding even more restrictions with a continued focus on outside water usage and new restrictions for local businesses. Specifically, hotels and motels must provide their guests the option of having towels and linens laundered daily, and restaurants can only serve water at the request of customers. In addition to these regulations, Governor Brown issued an Executive Order in April 2015 directing the state to reduce water use by 25 percent compared to 2013. Adjusted to reflect Claremont’s 2013 residential usage, the local reduction target was set at 32 percent.

Water providers were tasked with drawing up plans to help the communities they serve achieve the reduction mandates from the state. For the Claremont community, outdoor water usage is currently limited to two days per week. Additional restrictions that assign outdoor water days and times could be implemented, as needed. It is important to note that the metric used by the State Water Board is based upon residential usage, due to the fact that more than half of our local residential water is used outdoors. In Claremont, 2013 water usage ranged from a low of approximately 100 R-GPCD (residential gallons-per-capita-per-day) to a high of roughly 250 R-GPCD. This tells us that there is an opportunity to meet the 32 percent reduction goal by simply changing outside watering habits. So what does this mean for the business community? In most cases, especially in The Village, local businesses use very little water or no water outside of their properties. Aside from the aforementioned restrictions for hotels/motels and restaurants, the regulations are relatively minor for indoor usage. Even so, local businesses can play an important part helping our community reach the 32 percent reduction goal. Businesses are encouraged to consider ways to reduce indoor water usage, like replacing bathroom fixtures and laundry or dishwashing equipment with newer, more-efficient technology that would also save money. Golden State Water is proud to be your water provider and wants to be your partner in conservation. Please visit our website at gswater.com/drought or contact us at 800999-4033 to learn more about the water-use efficiency resources available for the Claremont community or to request a water audit for your business.

Foothill Gold Line: June/July 2015 Update During the months of April and May, the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority (Construction Authority) hosted six community open houses to update the community about the Foothill Gold Line light rail project from Azusa to Montclair. The open houses were held in each of the future corridor cities - Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont and Montclair. Close to 400 community members attended these events to learn the latest on the status of the light rail project, station design and art, project funding and more. Over the next two years, engineers are reviewing all elements of the project to refine the information needed to finalize design and ready the project to break ground in 2017. During this period, the city-selected station artists will be developing the public art concepts for the stations, as well as deciding on station colors and materials. The Azusa to Montclair segment is receiving some residual Measure R funding left over from the Pasadena to Azusa project. This money is being used to complete the advanced engineering and to ready the project for a design-build procurement. Funding has not yet been secured for construction of this segment of the line and the Construction Authority is seeking approximately $1 billion to complete construction of the six-station segment (a portion of the construction will be funded by San Bernardino County). The Construction Authority anticipates that funding will be made available through a proposed sales tax measure that will go to Los Angeles County voters for approval in November 2016. If the sales tax measure is approved, the project would be ready to break ground in 2017 and take approximately five years to complete. www.claremontchamber.org PRESS RELEASE REAL Connections: Supporting Seniors to Age in Place!

REAL Connections believes “it takes a village” to support seniors living at home, and we do just that! Real Connections members are a community of people, living in their own homes, who offer friendship, support, and are committed to helping each other when there is a need. The concept is about sharing time and talent with each other and lending or receiving a helping hand—that might mean getting or giving a ride, finding a trusted handyman, or having someone to call. Whatever it is, members in our village build new friendships and find peace of mind, knowing they have a community to which they can turn. Extensive local resident input helped shape the village, which was inspired by Beacon Hill Village, a grassroots organization started in Boston 14 years ago by a group of like-minded neighbors. Their basic idea was that people want to live and age well in their homes and communities as they grow older by accessing convenient services and resources with one phone call. This highly successful aging-in-place concept has spread rapidly worldwide. REAL Connections was the first of its kind in the Inland and East San Gabriel Valleys. Area residents who are seeking household and home maintenance assistance, local transportation, service discounts, health and wellness programs, errand-running, and trustworthy information and referrals might consider becoming a REAL Connections member. Members are interested in social and cultural activities, opportunities to help others, and believe in the power of neighbors helping neighbors. The village partners with credible organizations and businesses, and actively recruits reliable volunteers to meet the needs of village members. To quote an Upland village member, “the volunteers are prompt, helpful, kind and thoughtful. They are true volunteers of the highest sense. I feel that I have made a new circle of friends and find peace of mind knowing I can give and receive.” REAL Connections serves seniors in the communities of Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Pomona, Alta Loma, San Antonio Heights, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland. Come celebrate our 3rd anniversary on July 10th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Larkin Park as we honor our many volunteers and community members who make our village possible. Please join us and don’t hesitate to bring a friend to this fun filled event! Larkin Park is located at 763 W. Harrison in Claremont (one block east of Mountain Ave. on Harrison Avenue). Light dinner, refreshments, music and prizes provided. MUST RSVP by July 8th to 909-621-6300, or [email protected]
