Avanti! I’ve always said that the reason I come to Church every day is that I’m always learning something new once I’m here. That was certainly the case on Pentecost, May 15, when we received our Confirmation Class for 2016. I learned a great deal from the newest members of our Fullerton First. And it’s still resonating inside me. So, once I get their permission to do so, I look forward to sharing what I’m learning from each of them in a series of Sunday Witnesses focusing upon the Bible verses they chose. I pray that you’ll be able to join me. This last Sunday I referenced the banner that I saw upon the wall of a local United Church of Christ (U.C.C.) which read, “Don’t put a period where God has put a comma—Gracie Allen”, followed by the notation, “God is still Speaking”. God is speaking to us through all of our Church Family, and I for one am glad that I was in Worship on Pentecost.

Bible Verse for June “Be kind and loving to each other. forgive each other the same as God forgave you in Christ” - Ephesians 4:32

See you in Church!!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH! Open you hearts to the love God instills in them. God loves you tenderly. What he gives you is not to be kept under lock and key, but to be shared. The more you save, the less you will be able to give. The less you have, the more you will know how to share. Let us ask God, when it comes time to ask him for something, to help us to be generous. Did you know that . . . . . ?

Force Base in Lompoc to work on launching navigation satellites for the United States Navy. He was part of the Scout Missile project now on display at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Enter Ann Wells, born in 1940 in Hot Springs, Arkansas where her father was an instructor with the Civil Conservation Corps. When she was in the fourth grade, the family moved to Benton, Texas. Musical talents landed Ann in the high school choir, cheer club and all-state choir. A first-place win in a major musical competition assured the personable coed a scholarship to Texas Women’s University, a sister school to Texas A&M. She started to prepare for a nursing career, but eventually decided music was more important. On Oct. 30, 1960, she met Thad on a blind date “and he just took my breath away.” After their marriage in Benton, Ann and Thad were Air Force “nomads” moving from Alabama, Ohio, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Virginia to California. A job offering at Rockwell led the pair and their children to Fullerton where, for the first time, Ann selected their lovely home. The couple, who early on decided to spend a lifetime together, raised two children. Polly, who currently lives in Virginia with her husband, an FBI employee, and four children, and Ryan, an innovative engineer living in nearby San Dimas. When the Sandfords arrived in Fullerton in 1989, they immediately joined the Fullerton United Methodist Church. All of Thad’s mother’s family were Methodists in eastern Kentucky while Ann’s mother’s family attended Methodist churches. Leaving his Air Force career behind with outstanding credentials, Thad was soon one of the pioneers in the aircraft and satellite development at Rockwell. He ultimately worked on 11 experimental planes. “It was exciting to watch the early space program evolve into modern avionics,” he says. “Experimental planes improved planes. We could launch satellite guidance systems and assemble and launch a space booster system. We could update worldwide military command communications, and bring our software programs into Europe.”

An early childhood in an Alaskan outpost may have set the path for Thad Sandford’s lifetime of adventures and accomplishments. His wife of 47 years, Ann, has been by his side for 60 of Thad’s 76 trips to foreign destinations as the couple continues to explore countries most people dream about. Yet their travels have never pre-empted their love for family, church and community. Together, they have enriched the lives of their two children, four grandchildren and a host of organizations to which they belong. But first things first. During the Depression, Thad’s father and uncle ventured to America’s last frontier after the United States government opened land for settlers north of Anchorage where there’s 22 hours of sunlight in the summer. There, the pair joined workers in the gold fields for three years. “During that time, Dad married his high school sweetheart and brought her to the desolate area,” Thad says. “He told of walking with her 40 miles in snowshoes on their honeymoon to reach the gold fields.” After one year of the primitive lifestyle, the newlywed opened a coal mining camp south of Fairbanks. Thad remembers living on a riverbank when his father put in water and sewer lines for the community. He had to dig a 10-foot-deep trench with a bulldozer so the water wouldn’t freeze. “There were no roads to get to town, so we had to trek to a railroad line and ride a handrail car to reach the main line headed for Fairbanks 75 miles away,” he says. “Dad’s employees were U.S. Army soldiers, who did placer mining by bulldozing and scraping off topsoil.” When World War II was over, the Sandford family moved to central Texas. In time, Thad graduated from Texas A&M, joined the Air Force and, six years later, was sent to Vandenberg Air www.ffumc.net

FULLERTON METHODIST FOUNDATION IS REQUESTING GRANT RECOMMENDATIONS The Fullerton Methodist Foundation is seeking Grant Recommendations from the congregation to support activities beyond the administrative budget. Each request should include the purpose, sponsor, and a short statement on how the grant will promote the mission of the church. A request should be from $500 to no more than $5,000. Grant requests can be submitted at any time to the church office, in care of the Foundation. Grants to be considered this summer should be submitted by 15 June. Since 2004 the Foundation has granted over $100,000 for projects within our church and community. Some of the grants include: Music Interns, Saturday Pancake breakfast for the poor, Nursery equipment, playground equipment, CROP walk, Website, Conference Table for Dennis conference room, and, air conditioning. A complete listing of grants can be found on the church website. The Foundation is a non-profit corporation organized under the laws of the State of California and is governed by members of our church. It manages and invests funds that were gifts or bequests to the foundation, given for lasting benefit in support of church mission. The Gift’s principle is held in trust and only an estimate of the earnings are used to support the grants. Church members may also want to consider the Foundation as a part of their annual gifts to charities or as an element in their wills, for it can provide a lasting legacy of support to our Christian mission. And it would be tax deductible. If you are interested in the idea of gifting to the foundation we invite you to call our Chairman, Richard Mullard or our Treasurer Don Barter. Members of the Foundation are: Richard Mullard, chair; Don Barter, Treasurer; Susan Faber; Linda Knoff; Barbara Winter; Thad Sandford; and Steve Straub.

Thad eventually accepted a position with Boeing from which he retired as vice president. Through her years in Fullerton, Ann has kept busy with local organizations including Mojave Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; Colonial Dames; Music Associates of Cal State Fullerton; and Assistance League of Fullerton. She also tutored homebound students and served as a primary tutor for fourth and fifth graders at Commonwealth School. At FFUMC, the couple’s organizational talents have been shared for years. Thad has been a lay leader for 10 years while Ann has served with the worship choir and on the nominating, finance and pastor-parish committees. In addition, Ann has directed the choir twice between interim choir leaders. Thad remains active in his retirement years. He’s a member of the city’s Infrastructure Commission, Fullerton Main Rotary and the University of Riverside School of Engineering Advisory Board. He’s a past member of the engineering boards at UCLA, USC and Texas A&M. During one of their international travels, Ann and Thad renewed their vows in Morocco, wearing the traditional garb and signing a monetary contract. But, then, that’s another story……. “THE DAY OF MUSIC” Be sure to set side Tuesday, June 21 (the summer solstice) to join in the citywide celebration. “The Day of Music”, in its second year of bringing music to venues throughout the city - all FREE to be enjoyed by all. Fullerton First UMC played a role in the City’s first “Day of Music” last year by hosting two jazz performances. This year, we are pleased to once again open our doors to the joys of music. There are three sets of music scheduled. “Curtain Call”, a big band featuring show tunes, 20’s vaudeville music and other favorites will play at 6:30 pm; “All That Jazz”, a 15 piece jazz band will follow offering jazz standards and Latin jazz; A cellist group is slated to start at about 7:45 pm to close out the evening with a one hour program. The “Day of Music” joins more than 800 cities worldwide that choose the summer solstice to hold this event. There are more than 40 venues citywide that will be offering music in addition to our church, including the Fullerton Museum Plaza, Villa del Sol, Woodcrest and Ford Park, as well as businesses throughout the downtown area. Additionally, a special piano-centric program entitled “Tickle My Keys” will feature artistic inspired pianos placed randomly for public play throughout the City Join in the celebration by joining us in our sanctuary in the evening and visiting the other venues beginning in the afternoon. Program information will be available mid-June at www.thedayofmusic.com.

HELP WANTED! The “Sound Team” need members to join the rotation to operate the sound console on Sunday mornings. This is a fun and challenging way to provide service to our Church. We will train! FULLERTON FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH’S MISSION STATEMENT Fullerton First United Methodist Church is a community of faith that seeks to be a growing and dynamic church in Fullerton with an outreach to this region of Orange County and beyond. We are a part of a world-wide communion who believe in God’s transforming love as demonstrated by the life and teaching and living influence of Jesus. Believing that we are undergirded by God’s presence through God’s Holy Spirit in our daily living, we serve God as we endeavor: to reach out and receive persons into the faith family as they are; to help persons relate to God and grow in their commitment to the values exemplified in Jesus; to provide opportunities for persons to grow and deepen their faith as Christian disciples; to send persons into God’s creation as faithful disciples. As God’s people we seek to bring a fresh vision of hope as we minister to one another and the larger community in which we reside. We seek to faithfully live out these four foundational missional principles. We shall endeavor to be a place of grace in today’s world. www.ffumc.net
