WMPCWEEK LY Volume LI

June 21, 2017

No. 25

This week at White Memorial is a very exciting week. Vacation Church School is underway with over 200 children, 120 adult leaders and 45 youth helpers combining faith and fun. The theme for this year’s Vacation Church School is Hero Central. We are sharing stories of biblical Super Heroes as we study their stories from the Bible. We are grateful to Ashley Silverman and Alex Flynn who are this year’s coordinators. We are also so thankful to all of those who are serving as teachers, music leaders, recreation leaders, snack volunteers and others doing whatever it takes to make this a wonderfully inspiring and spiritually enriching experience for the children who come each morning. On Wednesday of this week members of White Memorial return from a medical, dental and construction mission trip to Haiti. They are sharing ministry with folks from First Presbyterian of Raleigh serving with our Haitian mission partners at Haiti Outreach Ministry. In his newsletter last Sunday Christopher told of his experience on the Appalachian Service Project in Avery County. Christopher and 37 other adults and youth worked last week rehabilitating houses and building relationships with folks in an economically depressed area of Avery County.

Worship on June 25, third Sunday after Pentecost 8:15 & 11:00 a.m.: Sanctuary 11:00 a.m.: OnPoint@1704 - Pickard Summer Forum: Pillars of the Church 9:30 a.m., Sanctuary Sermon: Love Stories Scripture: Matthew 10:24-39; Genesis 21:8-21 Hymns: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Be Thou My Vision The God of Abraham Praise

Volunteering for Vacation Church School or being in mission in Haiti or in Avery County are all ways to respond to God’s goodness with thanksgiving by giving of oneself. To pick up on this year’s Vacation Church School theme, everyone involved in these ministries is in some way a super hero.

Baptisms: 11:00 a.m. Anne Fielding Benton, child of Taylor and James Benton Eva Collins Salvatore, child of Heather and Nick Salvatore

Service in these capacities and in so many other ways of giving of oneself is done out of gratitude and is an expression of love. This Sunday our scripture lessons call us to love as a way of living as the people of God in response to God’s great love.

Bulletins are available online.

The anthem the choirs will sing this Sunday, You Will I Love, by Kevin Hildebrand, speaks to the depth and goodness of the love of God in Jesus Christ and the way we faithfully respond in loving adoration and service. The anthem, in part, says: You will I love, my strength, my tower: You will I love, my hope, my joy: You will I love, with all my power, With fervor time cannot destroy. You will I love, O Light divine, so long as life is mine. I thank you, who has richly given all that could make me glad and free. I thank you that my soul is healed with love that you revealed. Oh, keep me watchful, then, and humble, and never suffer me to stray, Uphold me when my feet would stumble, and keep me faithful to your way. Our response to God’s great love is to stay faithful and to love as God loves. It is a wonderful calling. I am glad to be a part of a community of faith in which God’s love is so faithfully shared. Grace and Peace, Gary Fulton

Is a White Memorial Friend or Relative in the Hospital? Please call the church office to let us know of relatives and friends who are in the hospital so that our pastoral staff may visit them. Due to HIPAA regulations, hospitals do not inform us when a member is hospitalized (even though a request for your church affiliation may appear on the admissions form.) We print members’ names in this newsletter and on our hospital board at church so we may pray for them. Please tell us if you or a relative do not want your name included; otherwise, we will follow our usual practice. Contact Sarah Clapp at ext. 210 during business hours.

Your Attention Please National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) BASICS Class

Divorce Support

WMPC is hosting a free six-week NAMI BASICS class at our church beginning June 17 from 10:00 a.m.-noon for parents and family caregivers of children and teens with challenging behavior or emotional issues and/or mental illness (brain disorder). This BASICS course helps parents and caregivers of children and teens to understand illnesses that cause behavioral difficulties and the critical role families play in the treatment of these illnesses. If you have a child or grandchild living with ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder or other mental disorder, this class is for you! For details or to register, contact Sheron Sumner at [email protected] or visit www.nami-wake.org/classes.

This four-week series will begin July 6 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in W400. Divorce Support is a White Memorial Presbyterian Church (WMPC) gathering where participants share with, learn from and care for one another in hope of healing. Lisa Hebacker will facilitate along with others who have experienced divorce. Registration at whitememorial.org/register is required in order to ensure that divorced or divorcing couples are not enrolled together. If you are familiar with Divorce Recovery as WMPC offered it in the past, Divorce Support will be similar yet different.

Join Us for Cover to Cover! It is not too late to join the study of the Bible from cover to cover. The class meets the first Sunday of each month in C302. Please note that, in the month of July, the class will meet on July 9 because of our holiday schedule on July 2.

Get Help with Grief White Memorial offers occasional Grief Support Workshops to help you name and address your grief. These workshops provide an opportunity to learn about grief and to give and receive support in the company of others experiencing grief. The next Grief Support Workshop will meet on four Thursdays—July 6, 13, 20 and 27—from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in W400. Please register online at whitememorial.org/register or contact Sarah Clapp at ext. 210 or [email protected].

Fill the Truck will focus on hunger as we fill the truck parked near Carol Copeland Courtyard on July 16. All food collected will go to Urban Ministries.
